Best Crypto Payment Processors in 2026: A Merchant’s Selection Guide

There is no single best crypto payment processor in 2026. The right choice depends on where your business is legally established, whether the provider is accepting merchants there now, how you want to settle (fiat, cryptocurrency, or both), your real transaction volume, the coins and networks your customers use, and whether your store platform has a supported integration.

BitPay publishes the clearest fee tiers, settlement timetable, and country information in the material available for this guide. CoinGate documents a broad plugin, network, Lightning, Layer 2, and API offering. Those strengths do not make either service universally superior: eligibility, account-specific pricing, payout access, and technical fit can change the decision for your business.

What a crypto payment processor actually does

A crypto payment processor sits between your checkout and the blockchain. It creates a payment request, watches for the required transaction, records the order status, and then settles the proceeds according to your account settings. Depending on the service and your jurisdiction, settlement may be in local currency, cryptocurrency, stablecoins, or a combination.

This is different from simply publishing a wallet address. A processor can automate exchange-rate calculation, payment-status notifications, order reconciliation, and payouts. You still remain responsible for confirming that the service is permitted for your business, that your accounting and tax treatment are appropriate, and that the supported assets and networks match your checkout.

BitPay describes its service as processing cryptocurrency payments for goods, services, or charitable donations. Its terms say a merchant can select local currency, supported cryptocurrencies, or a mixture, subject to its terms and operating circumstances. CoinGate presents a similar choice between crypto and fiat withdrawals, with plugins, a dashboard, and an API for different implementation styles.

Shortlist: what the published information supports

Processor or model Published strengths Important qualification
BitPay Public volume-based transaction rates; local-currency, cryptocurrency, or mixed settlement; automatic business-day settlement; bank deposits in 37 countries and crypto settlement in more than 200 countries, according to its support information. New onboarding is currently listed as paused for the EEA, UK, and Australia. Country, industry, minimum, timing, and account approval rules apply.
CoinGate Plugins for e-commerce, default Bitcoin Lightning support, multiple networks, Layer 2 options, crypto or fiat withdrawals, and an API. Its pages advertise fees starting at 1% or less. These are CoinGate’s own product statements. Confirm current availability, supported combinations, and your account-specific fee before committing.
Self-hosted approach A self-hosted processor can offer more control over infrastructure and settlement design. CoinGate’s April 16, 2026 comparison names BTCPay Server as an open-source, self-hosted option, but the comparative claims were not independently verified here. Check the project’s current documentation, maintenance status, and operational requirements yourself.

CoinGate’s comparison article also names NOWPayments and Coinbase Commerce. Treat those names as leads for direct due diligence, not as independently established winners: the ranking is vendor-authored, and the alternative providers’ fee and feature claims were not verified against their own documentation for this guide.

Check merchant eligibility before comparing features

The most attractive fee or plugin is irrelevant if the provider will not onboard your business. Verify eligibility using the country where the legal entity is established, not merely the country where customers live.

BitPay’s current onboarding notices

BitPay’s onboarding support article, updated October 3, 2026, lists the United States and Canada as supported locations for new merchant onboarding. It marks new onboarding for the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Australia as paused. The same article lists blocked jurisdictions including Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, and specified regions of Ukraine, and warns that restrictions may change.

A pause is not the same as a permanent prohibition. Recheck the live eligibility page immediately before opening an account, signing a contract, or building a production integration. Ask whether the restriction applies to your legal entity, beneficial owners, industry, or only to new applications.

CoinGate and other providers

CoinGate’s main product page advertises payouts in more than 180 countries. That is a company-published availability statement, not a guarantee that every merchant in every one of those countries can open an account or use every payout method. Request written confirmation of onboarding, supported currencies, compliance checks, and withdrawal access for your exact entity.

  • Confirm the legal-entity country, operating address, and owner-residency requirements.
  • Ask whether your industry is classified as high risk or requires enhanced review.
  • Check sanctions, state-level, territorial, and product restrictions.
  • Find out what happens to pending balances if the account is suspended or closed.
  • Record the date of the eligibility check because provider policies can change.

Compare the effective fee at your own volume

Do not compare a headline percentage with another provider’s starting rate. Model the fee on your expected monthly volume, average order value, transaction count, and industry classification. A fixed per-transaction charge matters much more for small orders than for large ones.

BitPay’s published transaction tiers

Merchant transaction amount Published fee What the figure means
Under $500,000 USD 2% + $0.25 Published BitPay rate; not a merchant-specific quote.
$500,000–$999,999 USD 1.5% + $0.25 Published BitPay rate for that stated volume band.
$1,000,000 USD or more 1% + $0.25 Published BitPay rate for that stated volume band.

BitPay says higher fees apply to high-risk industries. The tiers are presented in US dollars and should be treated as published pricing, not a promise that your approved account will receive the same terms. Ask whether the volume calculation is monthly, rolling, or otherwise defined in your agreement, and ask about any separate conversion, withdrawal, refund, chargeback, or compliance costs.

CoinGate’s advertised rates

CoinGate’s plugin page advertises a transaction fee of 1% or less, while its main page says fees start from 1%. These statements establish a public starting claim, not the final rate for every merchant, order type, currency, or integration. Obtain a current written quote and ask what is included.

Use an order-level example

At the published BitPay rate for transactions under $500,000, a $100 order would have a nominal fee of $2.25 (2% of $100 plus $0.25). A $1,000 order would have a nominal fee of $20.25. These examples exclude any other charges and do not predict your settlement amount; they simply show why the fixed $0.25 component has a larger percentage effect on low-value orders.

Build a worksheet with at least these inputs:

  • Monthly gross crypto sales and the expected number of orders.
  • Average and median order values.
  • Domestic versus cross-border sales.
  • Fiat conversion needs and the currencies you require.
  • Refunds, partial refunds, failed payments, and support transactions.
  • Any high-risk classification or enhanced-review surcharge.

Settlement: currency, minimums, timing, and reach

Settlement determines whether accepting cryptocurrency changes your treasury exposure. Decide whether you want predictable fiat, to retain cryptocurrency, or to split proceeds between the two.

BitPay settlement information

BitPay’s support page, updated October 7, 2026, says merchant settlements are issued automatically every business day. It lists direct bank deposits in 37 countries, cryptocurrency settlement in more than 200 countries, and 15 cryptocurrency settlement assets.

Issuance is not the same as bank availability. The page gives currency-specific minimums and delivery estimates. For example, USD settlement has a $20 minimum and usually arrives two business days after issuance; EUR settlement has a €100 minimum and usually arrives one business day after issuance. Your country, bank, currency, and account status can change the result, so verify the exact schedule before forecasting cash flow.

CoinGate withdrawal choices

CoinGate says merchants can withdraw in crypto or by bank transfer in EUR, USD, or GBP, and its main page also advertises settlement in stablecoins or cryptocurrency. Confirm which withdrawal methods are available to your entity, the minimum balance, conversion rate, bank-routing requirements, and whether a payout is automatic or manually requested.

Questions to put in the contract

  • What is the minimum payout for each currency or asset?
  • On which business day is the settlement created, and when should the bank credit appear?
  • Who bears network fees, bank fees, and foreign-exchange spread?
  • Can you choose a split such as 80% fiat and 20% cryptocurrency?
  • What happens when a payment arrives below the minimum or on an unsupported network?
  • How are weekends, bank holidays, compliance holds, and account reviews handled?

Match supported coins and networks to the checkout

“Accepts cryptocurrency” is too broad to be useful. A customer may hold USDC on Ethereum, Polygon, or another chain; sending to the wrong network can create a failed or unrecoverable payment. Document the exact asset-and-network combinations your customers need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CoinGate’s published network coverage

CoinGate documents default Bitcoin Lightning support, along with networks including Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, and TRON. It also lists Layer 2 options including Polygon and Arbitrum. Its pages say businesses can accept Bitcoin, USDC, and more than ten other cryptocurrencies.

Verify whether each option is available in your account, plugin, API, and chosen settlement currency. A network shown on a product page may not be enabled for every checkout configuration, region, or asset.

BitPay settlement assets

BitPay’s settlement support information lists 15 cryptocurrency settlement assets, but the available material does not establish that every asset can be used as a customer payment method in every country. Ask for the current payment-asset list, settlement-asset list, confirmation requirements, and supported wallet formats separately.

Prevent network mistakes

  1. Write the asset and network beside every checkout option, for example, “USDC — Ethereum” or “USDC — Polygon.”
  2. Show the same network label in the invoice, wallet instructions, and customer-support macros.
  3. Test a small payment on each enabled combination before launch.
  4. Define what support can do with an underpayment, overpayment, late payment, or wrong-network transfer.

Integration and daily operations

Choose the implementation that your team can maintain, not the one with the most features on a product page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plugins

CoinGate documents e-commerce plugins and says Bitcoin Lightning is enabled by default in its plugin offering. Before installation, check the plugin’s supported platform versions, webhook behavior, refund controls, tax settings, order-status mapping, and maintenance history.

API integration

An API is appropriate when you need a custom cart, marketplace split, subscription workflow, or internal order system. Require test credentials, idempotent payment creation, signed webhook verification, retry handling, and a way to reconcile the provider’s transaction ID with your order ID. The provider should document how an invoice moves from created to paid, expired, partially paid, overpaid, refunded, or under review.

Dashboard-based operations

A dashboard is useful for smaller teams, but verify that it exports settlement reports, fee details, wallet or bank references, refunds, and timestamps in a format your accountant can use. A payment processor can confirm that a blockchain transaction was seen; your business still needs an auditable record tying that payment to an order and a customer-support outcome.

Hosted processor or self-hosted system?

A hosted processor generally reduces infrastructure work: the provider handles payment pages, blockchain monitoring, and settlement rails. In exchange, you accept its onboarding rules, account controls, pricing, and operational dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A self-hosted system gives your team more control over infrastructure and keys, but it also makes uptime, backups, security updates, node operation, monitoring, address management, and settlement procedures your responsibility. CoinGate’s April 16, 2026 comparison article presents BTCPay Server as an open-source, self-hosted alternative. Because that comparison is vendor-authored and its claims were not independently checked here, evaluate the project directly rather than treating the mention as an endorsement or a complete technical assessment.

For a small business without an engineer responsible for payment infrastructure, list the people and processes required to operate a self-hosted stack before choosing it. The lower software cost, if any, does not remove the cost of reliability, security, support, and incident response.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the payment brief. Record your legal-entity country, sales countries, average order, monthly volume, required assets, preferred networks, store platform, settlement currencies, and whether you want fiat, crypto, or both.
  2. Pre-screen eligibility. Check each provider’s current onboarding page and obtain confirmation for your industry and entity. For BitPay, pay particular attention to the current EEA, UK, and Australia pause and the listed blocked jurisdictions.
  3. Request account-specific pricing. Give the provider realistic volume, order count, average ticket, and risk classification. Compare the resulting effective fee, not only the advertised percentage.
  4. Map settlement. Select the payout currency or split, then record minimums, issuance cadence, estimated bank arrival, conversion method, and every applicable fee.
  5. Validate asset and network combinations. Test each coin and chain your checkout will display. Confirm that the customer’s wallet, the invoice, and the settlement destination are compatible.
  6. Test the integration in a sandbox or controlled launch. Exercise successful payment, expiration, underpayment, overpayment, refund, duplicate webhook, and delayed-confirmation paths.
  7. Set accounting and support procedures. Decide how invoices, fees, exchange rates, refunds, and settlement reports are recorded. Train support staff on wrong-network and missing-payment escalation.
  8. Review the provider quarterly. Recheck fees, eligible countries, supported networks, payout timing, and terms because all can change.

Which type of merchant may prefer each option?

A smaller merchant with modest volume

Prioritize onboarding certainty, a maintained plugin, simple fiat settlement, transparent minimums, and a fee model that does not punish low-value orders. A low advertised percentage is not automatically cheaper if the fixed fee, conversion spread, or payout charge is significant.

A cross-border merchant

Compare the countries where your legal entity can onboard with the countries where customers can pay and where funds can be withdrawn. BitPay’s published figures distinguish 37 countries for direct bank deposits from more than 200 countries for cryptocurrency settlement; those are different capabilities, not interchangeable coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A merchant retaining crypto

Focus on the exact settlement assets, custody destination, confirmation policy, and reconciliation reports. Confirm who controls the receiving wallet, how keys are secured, and what happens during a compliance review or service interruption.

A high-risk merchant

Ask for written approval before implementation. BitPay explicitly says higher fees apply to high-risk industries, and any provider may impose additional review, reserves, or restrictions. Do not rely on a standard rate card for this category.

Common failure points and fixes

Onboarding is unavailable

If applications are paused in your region, stop before integrating. Ask whether there is an estimated review date, but do not design your business around an unconfirmed reopening. Keep a second eligible provider under evaluation.

A payout is late

Check whether the settlement was issued, whether the currency minimum was met, whether a bank holiday or compliance review applies, and whether the bank details are correct. Compare the provider’s issuance timestamp with the bank’s crediting date; they are separate events.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The customer paid on the wrong network

Preserve the transaction hash, asset, network, amount, invoice ID, and time. Do not promise recovery until the processor confirms that it can identify and return the funds. Update checkout labels so the same error is less likely to recur.

The order status did not update

Inspect webhook delivery, signature validation, retry logs, and idempotency handling. Reconcile the provider dashboard against your own order database before manually marking an order paid.

The fee is higher than expected

Compare the invoice-level fee with the contracted rate, fixed component, conversion spread, network charge, and any risk surcharge. Ask the provider to identify each line item rather than treating the difference as a rounding error.

How to interpret rankings and provider claims

CoinGate’s April 16, 2026 comparison article names five providers and presents a ranking. Because CoinGate authored that comparison, its ranking is promotional content, not an independent industry consensus. Use it to identify questions and candidates, then verify each candidate’s current terms directly.

CoinGate also publishes figures of more than 7 million processed payments and 1.4 million payments in 2025. Those are company-reported operational figures, not an independent market-wide statistic. They may indicate the scale CoinGate claims, but they do not establish conversion rate, uptime, support quality, or suitability for your business.

No available evidence establishes which processor delivers the best conversion uplift, reliability under your expected load, or universal merchant satisfaction. Those are reasons to run a controlled pilot and measure your own payment completion, support tickets, settlement variance, and reconciliation time.

Final decision checklist

  • The provider confirms onboarding for your entity, country, industry, and owners.
  • Your expected volume produces an acceptable all-in fee after fixed charges and any risk adjustment.
  • Settlement currency, minimum, cadence, and bank-arrival expectations fit your cash-flow needs.
  • Every required asset-and-network combination is supported in your actual checkout.
  • Your platform has a maintained plugin or your team can safely operate the API.
  • Refunds, failed payments, wrong-network transfers, webhooks, and account reviews have documented procedures.
  • You have current terms, pricing, and availability records dated close to launch.

For many merchants, BitPay is the more transparent starting point because it publishes detailed tiers, settlement examples, and onboarding restrictions. CoinGate may be a better technical fit when its documented plugins, Lightning support, network choices, Layer 2 options, or API align with the store. Neither conclusion replaces an eligibility check and account-specific quote.
