The best crypto app depends on what you are actually trying to do. Coinbase is the easiest starting point for many U.S. beginners, Kraken Pro is better suited to active order-book traders, Cash App is convenient for recurring Bitcoin purchases, and Robinhood makes sense if you already keep stocks there. None of those is the same as a self-custody wallet such as Robinhood Wallet.
Fees, custody, available coins, withdrawal options and tax-reporting tools matter more than an app’s download count. The comparison below focuses on U.S. users and distinguishes advertised commissions from the total cost shown in the quote.
Best crypto apps at a glance
| App | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | Most beginners and broad U.S. access | The basic buy screen can cost more than order-book trading through Coinbase Advanced. |
| Kraken Pro | Active traders who want transparent maker/taker pricing | Kraken’s ordinary app and Buy Crypto widget use different pricing. |
| Robinhood | Existing Robinhood stock investors | Routing, settlement and crypto-transfer limitations can matter. |
| Crypto.com App | Rewards, many assets and a broader app ecosystem | App, Exchange and other products have separate fees and terms. |
| Gemini | Users who prefer a regulated U.S. exchange interface | Gemini Mode and ActiveTrader have different fee schedules. |
| Cash App | Simple Bitcoin purchases and recurring buys | It is Bitcoin-focused rather than a full multi-asset exchange. |
| Robinhood Wallet | Beginners who specifically need self-custody | Losing the recovery phrase can permanently mean losing access. |
Rates and features change frequently. Before placing an order, check the app’s final preview, including the amount of crypto you will receive, the spread, payment fee and any withdrawal or network charge.
1. Coinbase: best overall for beginners
Coinbase is the strongest general-purpose choice for a new U.S. crypto buyer who wants a familiar interface, a sizable asset selection and a clear path to more advanced trading later. Its simple retail interface is designed for buying and selling without an order book. More experienced users can switch to Coinbase Advanced, which provides order books and market- and limit-style trading tools.

That distinction is important when comparing prices. A basic Coinbase purchase quote can include a transaction fee and spread. Coinbase Advanced instead displays maker/taker pricing based partly on trailing 30-day trading volume. The applicable fee appears on the order-preview screen.
Use Coinbase if:
- You are making your first crypto purchase.
- You want a mainstream custodial exchange rather than managing private keys.
- You may eventually use order-book trading through Coinbase Advanced.
Do not compare a simple Coinbase quote directly with a Kraken Pro or Coinbase Advanced maker/taker rate. They are different products with different pricing mechanics. Also, “Coinbase Pro” is outdated terminology; the current consumer advanced-trading product is Coinbase Advanced.
2. Kraken Pro: best for active traders
Kraken Pro is the better fit for someone who understands order types and wants exchange-style pricing on web or mobile. It separates the trading interface from Kraken’s ordinary app and Buy Crypto widget, making it easier to see the order book, execution type and applicable trading fee.
As of July 9, 2026, Kraken determines a user’s spot fee tier using whichever produces the better rate: trailing 30-day spot volume or assets held on the platform. The base spot rate is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, with lower tiers available.

A maker/taker detail that catches people out
A market order is taker because it immediately matches an existing order. A limit order is not automatically maker: if it executes immediately against an order already on the book, it is also taker. Kraken’s Post limit order option is designed to ensure maker treatment or cancel the order instead.

A partially filled order can receive both treatments. The portion matched immediately is charged at the taker rate; any portion that rests on the order book is charged at the maker rate when it later fills.
3. Robinhood: best for existing stock investors
Robinhood is convenient if your stocks, options and cash already live in the app. Crypto sales become available immediately for buying stocks, options or more crypto inside Robinhood, while withdrawing the money to a bank remains subject to ACH settlement and may take up to five business days.
Standard bank transfers have no deposit or withdrawal fee. But standard crypto trades use market-maker routing by default. Robinhood is gradually rolling out exchange routing and fee tiers; eligible fees range from 0.00% to 0.95%, and availability may differ between customers. To inspect the setting, open Account → Settings → Crypto → Fee tiers.
Robinhood is best for convenience, not for users who need every exchange feature. Check whether the asset can be transferred, how long settlement will take and the exact quote before trading.
4. Crypto.com App: best for a broad ecosystem
Crypto.com’s U.S. app advertises trading in more than 400 cryptocurrencies, USD deposits, rewards products and a Visa Card. It may appeal to users who want crypto trading combined with spending and rewards features rather than a narrowly focused exchange.
The company lists crypto deposits and crypto-to-crypto exchange in the app at 0.00%, although banking providers may charge fees. That label does not prove that the total trade is free. The quoted spread and the particular product still matter. Crypto.com App, Crypto.com Exchange and derivatives products have separate terms and fee schedules.

Use the app’s preview to compare the dollar amount paid with the crypto amount received. A “zero-fee” label can coexist with a spread, and an inexpensive deposit does not necessarily make the trade inexpensive.
5. Gemini: best for a regulated exchange interface
Gemini may suit users who prefer a U.S.-focused exchange interface and want a published, scheduled fee table. Its ActiveTrader platform uses maker/taker pricing. The current base-tier schedule, updated July 9, 2026, lists 0.600% maker and 1.200% taker fees, with lower rates at higher volume or asset-balance tiers.
There is a major comparison trap: Gemini Mode and ActiveTrader do not have the same fee schedule. An ActiveTrader rate can understate the cost of an ordinary app purchase. Identify the interface you will actually use before comparing Gemini with Coinbase Advanced or Kraken Pro.
6. Cash App: best for simple Bitcoin purchases
Cash App is a reasonable choice for someone who wants Bitcoin rather than a multi-asset trading platform. Its straightforward interface supports recurring purchases, Auto Invest and Round Ups.
Cash App’s published Bitcoin schedule lists the following market buy and sell fees:
| Transaction amount | Published fee |
|---|---|
| $1–$499 | 2.0% |
| $500–$999 | 1.5% |
| $1,000–$1,999 | 0.9% |
| $2,000 or more | 0% |
Cash App says market transactions may also include a spread of up to 0.75%. It advertises Auto Invest, Round Ups and qualifying direct-deposit Bitcoin purchases with a 0% fee and 0% spread. Confirm that your particular transaction qualifies; the ordinary market-buy schedule is not the same thing.

7. Robinhood Wallet: best for beginner self-custody
Robinhood Wallet is a separate application from Robinhood Crypto. It is a self-custody wallet: you control the private keys rather than leaving the crypto under a trading platform’s custody. Supported networks include Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, Dogecoin, Arbitrum, Polygon, Optimism, Base and Robinhood Chain.
That control comes with responsibility. The secret recovery phrase is the backup that determines whether you can recover the wallet. Robinhood says its support team cannot recover a lost phrase. Store it offline, never photograph or email it, and never type it into a website that someone sends you.
Recommended Free Tools
Robinhood Wallet says it does not collect blockchain network fees, but network fees still apply. A transfer can also require a memo or tag. Sending to the wrong address, network or missing a required memo can prevent crediting, and crypto transfers generally cannot be reversed.
How to choose a crypto app
- Decide whether you need custody or self-custody. With a custodial exchange, the company controls the wallet and account recovery process. With self-custody, you control the keys but bear the recovery and security risk.
- List the assets you actually intend to buy. Do not choose an app based only on its total coin count. Confirm that the exact asset, network and withdrawal method are supported in the U.S.
- Compare the final quote. Look at the dollars paid, crypto received, spread, trading fee, payment fee and withdrawal charge—not just a “commission-free” headline.
- Choose the correct trading interface. Coinbase Advanced, Kraken Pro, Gemini ActiveTrader and the ordinary consumer screens have different pricing.
- Check transfer and settlement rules. A sale may be usable inside an app immediately but unavailable for bank withdrawal until settlement. A wallet transfer may require a network fee, memo or tag.
- Secure the account before funding it. Use a unique password, an authenticator-based two-factor method where available, and withdrawal protections. Never share a password, one-time code or recovery phrase with support.
Custody, insurance and security
Crypto balances are not FDIC-insured merely because the same app offers banking services or an insured cash account. The CFPB says no government agency or financial regulator insures crypto-assets. Treat an exchange balance as an investment and counterparty exposure, not as an insured bank deposit.
| Custodial exchange or brokerage | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|
| Platform controls the private keys. | User controls the private keys. |
| Account recovery may be possible through the company. | Recovery depends on the secret phrase and backup. |
| Exposure includes platform outages, freezes and counterparty risk. | Exposure includes phishing, lost phrases and mistaken transfers. |
For either type, start with a small test transaction before moving a significant amount. Verify the destination address and network character by character, and ignore anyone claiming to be support who asks you to import a recovery phrase.
How fees really work
“Commission-free” is not the same as cost-free. A platform may earn through spread, routing economics, payment-method fees, withdrawal charges or a subscription. The practical test is simple: compare the value of the crypto you receive with the amount leaving your bank account.

Withdrawal fees and blockchain network fees are also different. An app may charge no separate transfer fee while the underlying network still requires a fee. The app should show the network charge before confirmation. This is especially relevant when moving assets to a self-custody wallet.
FAQ
What is the best crypto app for beginners?
Coinbase is the strongest general-purpose starting point for many U.S. beginners because it offers a simple interface and a path to Coinbase Advanced. Beginners should still review the final quote and understand that the basic buy screen and Advanced trading have different pricing.
Which crypto app has the lowest fees?
There is no single lowest-cost app for every transaction. Kraken Pro, Coinbase Advanced and Gemini ActiveTrader use order-book maker/taker schedules, while ordinary purchase screens may include spreads or separate fees. Compare the final amount of crypto received, not just the advertised commission.
Is Robinhood Crypto the same as Robinhood Wallet?
No. Robinhood Crypto is a custodial trading account inside the brokerage app. Robinhood Wallet is a separate self-custody app in which the user controls the keys and is responsible for protecting the recovery phrase.
Are crypto balances in these apps FDIC-insured?
No. Crypto-assets are not FDIC-insured merely because an app also provides banking or brokerage services. Cash held in a separately identified insured account may have different protections, but those protections do not automatically cover crypto.
The Bottom Line
For most U.S. beginners, Coinbase is the best overall starting point. Choose Kraken Pro if transparent order-book trading and fee tiers matter more than simplicity; Robinhood if you already use it for stocks; Crypto.com if its rewards ecosystem and broad asset list fit your needs; Cash App for uncomplicated Bitcoin recurring purchases; Gemini for its exchange interface and published ActiveTrader schedule; and Robinhood Wallet only when you deliberately want self-custody and can protect a recovery phrase.
Whichever app you use, judge the actual quote, verify transfer details and keep crypto custody separate in your mind from insured bank deposits.
