The best credit union for a car loan depends on more than the lowest advertised APR. Membership eligibility, credit history, vehicle age and mileage, loan term, loan-to-value limits, autopay requirements and refinance rules can change the offer you actually receive.
For a national comparison, Navy Federal Credit Union is especially compelling for military-affiliated borrowers, DCU stands out for its same advertised rate on new and used vehicles, PenFed is useful for online prequalification and car-buying-service discounts, and Alliant is a strong digital-first option. Compare each quote using the same vehicle, amount financed and repayment term.

Advertised rates are starting points, not promises. A lender may quote you a different APR after reviewing your credit, vehicle details, loan amount and repayment term.
1. Navy Federal Credit Union: best for military-affiliated borrowers
Navy Federal’s auto-loan rate table dated July 20, 2026 lists new-vehicle APRs as low as:
#1 Best Overall
- 3.89% for 12–36 months
- 4.29% for 37–60 months
- 4.59% for 61–72 months
- 5.99% for 73–84 months
- 7.39% for 85–96 months
Used-vehicle rates are listed as 4.79% for 12–36 months, 5.29% for 37–60 months, 5.39% for 61–72 months and 6.98% for 73–84 months. No used-car rate is listed for 85–96 months.
Navy Federal says it offers 100% financing, returns most decisions in seconds and has no set minimum credit score. The quoted rate can still depend on credit history, amount financed, term, model year and exact mileage. Preapprovals remain valid for 90 calendar days. Applications are available through online banking, the mobile app, by phone or at a branch.
Who can join Navy Federal?
Eligible members include active-duty personnel, veterans, retirees, reservists and annuitants from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and Space Force. Certain Department of Defense employees, contractors and ROTC or Officer Candidate participants may also qualify. Eligible parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, children, grandchildren and household members can qualify through a relationship with an eligible person.
You must open and maintain a Membership Savings Account with at least a $5 balance. After funding, Navy Federal requires the vehicle title to reach it within 90 days of purchase.

2. DCU: best for the same advertised rate on new and used vehicles
DCU currently lists the same advertised auto-loan rates for new and used cars, trucks and vans:
Rank #2
- Loan Amortization and Remaining Balances
- Instant Principal, Interest, Interest Only and Total Payments
- Future Values
- Date math function
| Maximum term | Advertised APR |
|---|---|
| Up to 36, 48 or 65 months | 4.99% |
| Up to 72 months | 5.49% |
| Up to 84 months | 6.99% |
DCU says up to 130% loan-to-value may be available. That could allow financing certain taxes, fees or other costs, but borrowing more than the vehicle’s value also increases the risk of owing more than the car is worth.
Qualifying Plus and Relationship Members using electronic payments may receive a 0.50-percentage-point membership discount. Fully electric vehicles may qualify for an additional 0.25-percentage-point discount. DCU also advertises purchase and refinance loans and no payments for 60 days.

Membership may be available through a family relationship, participating employer, participating organization or certain communities. The displayed 4.99% APR is an “as low as” figure. It is not automatically available to every member: the final offer remains subject to underwriting, and the discounts require specific membership and payment conditions.

3. PenFed Credit Union: best for online prequalification and buying-service discounts
PenFed lets applicants view prequalified offers without affecting their credit score. Accepting an offer requires authorization for a full credit report, which creates a hard inquiry. That distinction matters if you are comparing several lenders.
PenFed’s TrueCar-powered Car Buying Service currently lists these rates:

| Vehicle | 36-month APR | 60-month APR |
|---|---|---|
| New | 3.39% | 3.84% |
| Used | 4.34% | 4.99% |
These rates apply to qualifying purchases made through the PenFed Car Buying Service, which is available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. They are not necessarily available for a vehicle purchased outside the service or for an applicant with less-than-excellent credit.
PenFed generally requires a purchase vehicle to have fewer than 125,000 miles. Its definition of a new vehicle is an untitled vehicle that is the original owner’s vehicle, is the current model year or newer and has fewer than 7,501 miles. Up to 125% financing may be available subject to restrictions. PenFed does not charge an application fee or early-payoff fee, but it does not permit an internal refinance of an existing PenFed auto loan.
PenFed says the final APR is determined at disbursement. A prequalified offer therefore is not a guarantee of the final approval or rate.

4. Alliant Credit Union: best for digital lending and fast approval
Alliant operates without branches and handles auto lending online. It says most applications receive a same-day approval and that borrowers can obtain preapproval for terms up to 84 months. It finances vehicles in all 50 states and offers refinancing for loans held by other lenders.

Alliant advertises no prepayment penalties and a 0.50% APR discount when you buy through its TrueCar-powered Car Buying Service. Its disclosures also state that rates are 0.40 percentage points higher without automatic payments and 1 percentage point higher when refinancing an existing Alliant loan.
The car-buying-service discount applies to new, untitled vehicles with terms up to 60 months, and the purchase must go through a listed TrueCar-certified dealer. A longer term may still be available outside that discounted arrangement.
How to become an Alliant member
Eligibility may come through a participating employer, retirement from a participating employer, an immediate family member or domestic partner who is an Alliant member, or residence or work in an eligible community near Alliant’s Chicago headquarters. Applicants without another route can join through the Alliant Credit Union Foundation; Alliant says it pays the one-time $5 membership fee in that situation.

How to choose the best credit union car loan
Compare offers with identical assumptions. A 60-month quote for $25,000 cannot be fairly compared with a 72-month quote for $27,000.
- Compare APR. APR is more useful than the nominal interest rate because it reflects applicable borrowing costs and fees.
- Price new and used vehicles separately. Navy Federal lists different new- and used-car tables, while DCU currently advertises the same table for both.
- Check the term. Longer terms reduce the required monthly payment but generally increase total interest.
- Confirm age and mileage rules. An advertised rate may not apply to an older or high-mileage vehicle.
- Check the loan-to-value limit. Financing above the purchase price can cover some costs, but it can also create negative equity.
- Identify discount conditions. Autopay, electronic payments, electric-vehicle status and use of an affiliated buying service may all affect the APR.
- Read refinance restrictions. PenFed, for example, does not refinance its own existing auto loans internally.
- Check preapproval expiration. Navy Federal’s preapproval lasts 90 days; other lenders may use different periods.
- Ask how funding works. The lender may send funds to you, the dealer or the seller.
- Confirm title and insurance requirements. The credit union generally records a lien and may require proof of insurance.
The NCUA recommends comparing APR and loan length, contacting lenders directly and not assuming dealer-arranged financing is the cheapest option.
A practical application strategy
- Check membership eligibility before submitting an application.
- Request prequalification or preapproval from two to four lenders.
- Use the same requested amount and term with each lender.
- Ask whether the initial credit check is soft or hard.
- Complete rate shopping within 14 to 45 days. The CFPB says multiple auto-loan inquiries made during that window generally count as one inquiry for credit-scoring purposes.
- Take the strongest written offer to the dealer.
- Compare the dealer’s offer by APR, term, amount financed, finance charge and total of payments—not merely the monthly payment.
- Make sure financing is final before taking the vehicle home.
Be cautious about “spot delivery” or “yo-yo financing.” A dealer may let you take the car and later say financing was not finalized, then demand a higher rate, larger down payment or longer term. Ask for written confirmation that the financing is final.

“Credit unions always have lower rates than banks.”
Not always. Credit unions can be competitive, but your actual offer depends on credit, term, vehicle age, mileage, loan-to-value, discounts and underwriting. Compare credit unions with banks and dealer financing rather than assuming one category will always win.
“Preapproval guarantees the final rate.”
It does not necessarily. Lenders use “prequalification” and “preapproval” differently, and final terms may depend on documentation, vehicle information and a final credit review. PenFed explicitly says its final APR is determined at disbursement.

“The lowest advertised rate applies to every car.”
Advertised rates can be limited by model year, mileage, vehicle condition, term, amount financed, credit history, loan-to-value, autopay and car-buying-service requirements.
“Longer terms save money.”
A longer term may lower the monthly payment, but it generally increases total interest and can leave you owing more than the car is worth for longer.
Check insurance before opening an account
Before opening a share account solely to qualify for membership, verify the credit union’s insurance status. The NCUA’s National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund generally protects eligible share accounts at federally insured credit unions up to $250,000 per member-owner, per insured credit union, per ownership category. Some state-chartered credit unions use private insurance instead, so check the institution’s disclosures directly.
FAQ
Which credit union has the lowest car-loan rate?
There is no universal lowest-rate lender. In the current comparison, PenFed lists rates as low as 3.39% for a 36-month new-car loan through its Car Buying Service, while Navy Federal lists new-car rates as low as 3.89% for 12–36 months for eligible members. Your final APR depends on credit, vehicle, term, loan amount and discount conditions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can anyone join a credit union to get a car loan?
No. Each credit union has membership rules. Navy Federal primarily serves military, Department of Defense and eligible family or household members. DCU uses specified family, employer, organization and community routes, while Alliant offers employer, family, geographic and foundation-based eligibility.
Does auto-loan prequalification hurt your credit score?
A soft-pull prequalification generally does not affect your score, but accepting an offer may trigger a hard inquiry. PenFed explicitly states that its initial rate check is soft and that accepting a loan offer requires a full credit inquiry.
Should you get a credit union preapproval before visiting a dealer?
Usually, yes. A written preapproval gives you a benchmark for comparing dealer financing and helps you focus on the vehicle price rather than only the monthly payment. Confirm the preapproval period, eligible vehicles, funding process and whether the approval is final.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Navy Federal if you qualify through military or DoD affiliation, DCU if its membership and payment discounts fit your situation, PenFed if you want online prequalification or its TrueCar buying service, and Alliant if you prefer fully digital lending and fast approval. The best offer is the one with the lowest total borrowing cost for your specific vehicle—not necessarily the lender with the lowest headline APR.
