For most shoppers, OnePay CashRewards is the strongest card built around Walmart spending: it earns 3% on eligible U.S. Walmart purchases, or 5% for Walmart+ members, and can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted. A Walmart Spend Card is a different possible application outcome: it is limited to Walmart and has no standard rewards program. For Walmart.com purchases, American Express Blue Cash Everyday can earn 3% in its eligible U.S. online-retail category up to the annual cap, but that rate does not generally apply to in-store Walmart transactions.
The right choice depends on where you shop, whether you already pay for Walmart+, how you redeem rewards, and whether you carry a balance. A high rewards rate is not a benefit if interest charges outweigh it.

OnePay CashRewards: the leading Walmart-focused option
How the two application outcomes differ
OnePay describes two possible products after an application. The CashRewards card is the rewards-bearing account. It can be used wherever Mastercard is accepted, so the account remains useful for non-Walmart spending. The Walmart Spend Card is a separate Walmart-only product with no standard rewards program. Approval is subject to credit review, so an applicant cannot assume that a CashRewards approval will result.

This distinction matters when comparing a headline percentage. A Walmart-only account without standard rewards may still provide a way to pay at Walmart, but it is not equivalent to a card earning 3% or 5% back. Read the product name and approval terms shown before accepting the account.
Walmart earn rates
OnePay states that CashRewards earns 3% on eligible U.S. Walmart purchases. The rate rises to 5% for Walmart+ members. The issuer’s definition of an eligible purchase controls, so review the current card agreement for exclusions, returns, gift-card transactions, third-party marketplace orders, or other categories that may be treated differently.
The Walmart+ enhancement is tied to membership status. If the membership ends or the account no longer qualifies, the ordinary 3% rate may apply. The issuer terms supplied for this comparison do not establish a Walmart+ membership price; check Walmart’s current membership page before calculating whether the incremental 2 percentage points justify a membership you would not otherwise buy.

Non-Walmart earning and the introductory period
OnePay’s page describes 3% on non-Walmart purchases during a stated introductory bonus period, followed by 1.5% on other purchases. Because the dates and conditions of that enhanced offer can change, verify the live application page and disclosures before relying on the introductory rate. The ongoing 1.5% rate is the more useful figure for a long-term budget.
Fees, APR, and points
The issuer reports no annual fee. Its official disclosure lists variable purchase APRs of 20.24% or 30.74% for new accounts as of May 1, 2026; the rate offered to an individual applicant depends on credit and account terms. Those APRs are not a reason to carry a balance for rewards. Paying the statement balance by the due date is the only way to avoid ordinary purchase interest when the account’s grace-period requirements are met.

CashRewards issues points rather than labeling the benefit simply as cash back. OnePay’s card-page terms require at least 25 points for a redemption. Available choices include a statement credit and a deposit into a OnePay deposit account, with other options potentially appearing in the account. Confirm the current conversion value, timing, and any restrictions in the app before redeeming.
American Express Blue Cash Everyday: useful mainly for Walmart.com
Why the online category can fit
American Express lists 3% on eligible U.S. online retail purchases, up to $6,000 in purchases per year, then 1%. A qualifying Walmart.com or Walmart app order can fit that category when the transaction is coded as eligible online retail. The $6,000 limit is a combined annual cap for the category, not a Walmart-only allowance. Once the cap is reached, additional eligible online-retail purchases earn 1% under the published terms.
Online classification is the key limitation. Paying at a physical Walmart register generally does not turn the transaction into an online-retail purchase. A pickup or delivery order can also depend on how the merchant processes the charge, so check the posted transaction and the issuer’s category rules rather than assuming every app order receives 3%.
Other categories and fees
Blue Cash Everyday has separate supermarket, gas, and online-retail categories, each with its own eligibility rules and caps. Walmart is generally excluded from supermarket bonus treatment, so a superstore purchase should not be treated like a qualifying grocery-store transaction merely because it includes food.
The current American Express product page lists a 2.7% foreign transaction fee. That fee is relevant when a transaction is processed outside the United States or in a foreign currency; it can exceed the value of a small rewards rate. Review the current pricing disclosure for the purchase APR, late fees, and any introductory offer before applying.

How Reward Dollars are redeemed
American Express describes cash back as Reward Dollars. The product page lists statement-credit redemption and also describes using Reward Dollars at Amazon.com checkout. Statement-credit timing and eligibility rules apply, so confirm that the account has enough available Reward Dollars and that the redemption option is active before submitting a request.

Walmart Cash is a retailer loyalty balance earned through Walmart’s own offers and program rules. It is separate from points or cash back generated by a credit-card account. Walmart says the balance can be applied toward most Walmart purchases by converting it to a Walmart eGift card, subject to listed exclusions and other terms.
You can potentially receive both benefits on one qualifying transaction: a card may award points according to its merchant-category rules, while Walmart separately awards Walmart Cash under its promotion. Neither program guarantees the other. Check the offer’s qualifying products, activation requirements, expiration rules, and excluded purchase types before assigning a value to Walmart Cash.

General-purpose and rotating-category cards can outperform a dedicated card in a particular quarter, but their value changes with issuer calendars and activation rules. Compare the rate that applies after caps and introductory periods, not the largest promotional number.
How to compare the real value
1. Separate the earn rate from the usable value
Multiply expected eligible Walmart spending by the rate that actually applies. For example, $500 of eligible purchases at 3% produces 1,500 points or the issuer’s equivalent value; the exact dollar value depends on OnePay’s current redemption conversion. A 5% headline is meaningful only when Walmart+ status and the transaction’s eligibility are both in place.

2. Account for caps and time limits
Blue Cash Everyday’s 3% online-retail rate stops after $6,000 in annual eligible purchases. OnePay’s enhanced non-Walmart rate is described as introductory, while its ongoing other-purchase rate is 1.5%. Put the post-cap and post-introductory rates into your estimate so the comparison reflects a full year.
3. Subtract fees and avoid interest assumptions
Start with annual fees, foreign-transaction fees when relevant, and any membership cost you would pay only to obtain a higher Walmart rate. Then compare the result with the cost of carrying a balance. A card earning 5% cannot reliably offset a purchase APR in the 20% or 30% range when interest accrues month after month.
4. Value redemption flexibility
A statement credit reduces the card balance but may not arrive instantly. A deposit option can be more useful if you keep funds in a OnePay account. Reward Dollars used at Amazon.com checkout serve a different purpose than a statement credit. Walmart Cash is restricted to the retailer’s ecosystem. Choose the redemption route you will actually use, not merely the rate printed in an advertisement.
5. Check acceptance and account concentration
CashRewards’ Mastercard network provides broader acceptance than a Walmart-only product. American Express acceptance is extensive but not universal. If you use a card as your only payment method, maintain a backup accepted at the merchants and locations you frequent.

Application and setup checklist
- Decide whether you need a Walmart-only account. If you want rewards outside Walmart, look for the CashRewards outcome rather than assuming every OnePay application produces it.
- Review the live issuer disclosure. Confirm the current annual fee, purchase APR range, bonus period, eligible-purchase language, redemption minimum, and any account-specific conditions.
- Identify your shopping channel. Separate register purchases, Walmart.com orders, app orders, pickup, delivery, and marketplace transactions in your spending estimate.
- Check Walmart+ status. If you already have membership, verify that the account information used for the card is linked correctly. If you would join solely for the higher rate, compare the incremental rewards with the membership’s current price.
- For Blue Cash Everyday, estimate the online cap. Include eligible online-retail spending at merchants other than Walmart because the $6,000 limit is category-wide.
- Plan redemption. Decide whether you prefer statement credit, deposit, or another available option, and keep at least 25 OnePay points if redeeming through CashRewards.
- Set autopay for the statement balance. Rewards should supplement a payment plan, not encourage revolving debt.

Assuming every Walmart purchase earns the same rate
Store, website, app, pickup, delivery, and marketplace charges can receive different merchant-category treatment. Save receipts and inspect the posted transaction if a reward does not appear.

Calling Walmart a supermarket
Supermarket bonus categories use the merchant code assigned to the transaction. Walmart is generally excluded from those bonuses, so food purchased there does not automatically qualify.
Confusing a Walmart Spend Card with CashRewards
Read the approval result carefully. The Walmart Spend Card has no standard rewards program and is restricted to Walmart; the CashRewards product is the one described as earning 3% or 5% and working wherever Mastercard is accepted.

Track cumulative U.S. online-retail spending. Once $6,000 is reached for the year, the rate falls to 1% for additional purchases in that category.

Keep separate records for retailer balances and card points. Walmart Cash follows Walmart’s redemption and exclusion rules and should not be included in a credit-card cash-back calculation.
Using a legacy product as if it were open to new applicants
The Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard is no longer a current application recommendation. NerdWallet reports that Capital One stopped accepting applications in 2024 and existing holders were transitioned to Quicksilver; Walmart later introduced its OnePay and Synchrony partnership. What to verify before submitting an application
- Whether the advertised percentage applies to U.S. Walmart purchases, Walmart.com only, or a defined merchant category.
- Whether Walmart+ membership is required for the higher OnePay rate and how the issuer confirms eligibility.
- The current purchase APR, annual fee, foreign-transaction fee, late fee, and any promotional expiration date.
- How returns, refunds, gift cards, marketplace sellers, taxes, shipping, and payment-wallet transactions affect rewards.
- The minimum redemption balance, conversion value, processing time, and available redemption destinations.
- Whether your preferred payment network is accepted at every Walmart location and at other merchants you use.
