Short answer: For most U.S. travelers, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is the best overall travel card because its $95 annual fee, transferable points, travel protections, broad bonus categories and current welcome offer create a well-balanced package. Choose Capital One Venture X Rewards if you will use its $300 Capital One Travel credit and airport lounges, The Platinum Card from American Express if you will genuinely use premium lounges and several credits, Citi Strata Premier for strong travel, grocery, dining and fuel rewards, Capital One Venture Rewards for simple flat-rate earning, and Bank of America Travel Rewards if you want no annual fee.

The right card depends on how often you travel, whether you are willing to book through an issuer’s travel portal, which benefits you can actually use, and whether you pay your balance in full. A large annual credit or welcome bonus is not valuable if it pushes you into unnecessary spending or a booking option you would not otherwise choose.

Offer, fee and benefit information was researched August 11, 2026 UTC. Credit-card terms can change without notice, so confirm the live issuer application page and pricing disclosures before applying.

  • Want transferable points and a moderate fee? Start with Chase Sapphire Preferred.
  • Want lounge access without an $895 annual fee? Compare Venture X with your airport and travel habits in mind.
  • Want luxury airport and hotel benefits? The Platinum Card may fit, but only if you can use several of its conditional credits.
  • Spend heavily on groceries, restaurants, gas or EV charging? Citi Strata Premier may outperform a general-purpose card for that spending pattern.
  • Do not want to track bonus categories? Capital One Venture Rewards offers a simpler 2x approach.
  • Want to avoid an annual fee? Bank of America Travel Rewards is the cleanest fit in this comparison.
  • Have Bank of America or Merrill assets? Check your current Preferred Rewards tier before deciding whether Premium Rewards’ relationship bonus changes the math.

1. Best overall: Chase Sapphire Preferred

Chase Sapphire Preferred is the strongest all-around choice for a typical traveler who wants more than a basic cash-back card but does not want to pay a premium-card annual fee. Its $95 annual fee is relatively easy to understand, while its transferable points and travel protections give it more upside than a simple fixed-rate card.

Key terms

  • Annual fee: $95.
  • Welcome offer: The issuer advertised a limited-time 100,000-point offer after $5,000 in purchases during the first three months, as researched August 11, 2026. Eligibility restrictions and offer availability apply.
  • Earning: 5x points on Chase Travel purchases; 3x on worldwide dining, gas and EV charging, vacation homes, online groceries and select streaming categories; 2x on other travel; and 1x elsewhere.
  • Credits: Up to $100 annually for a hotel booked through Chase Travel, plus up to $120 every four years for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS.
  • Points: Points can be transferred to participating frequent-travel programs, subject to the applicable program and transfer terms.

Chase refreshed the card’s earning structure effective June 15, 2026. That matters because older comparisons may show a different list of 3x categories. Use the current issuer terms rather than relying on a pre-refresh review.

The hotel credit can make the card’s effective cost lower for someone who would independently book an eligible hotel through Chase Travel. It should not be treated as an automatic $100 rebate: the booking must use the required portal and remain subject to the portal’s price, availability, cancellation and eligibility rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: A traveler who wants flexible points, occasional or frequent travel benefits, and a fee substantially below premium cards.

Watch-outs: The welcome bonus is not guaranteed, and you should not spend $5,000 merely to earn points. Portal pricing and transfer-partner restrictions also matter. If you usually prefer booking directly with hotels or airlines, compare the value and convenience of the portal rewards before applying.

2. Best premium value: Capital One Venture X Rewards

Capital One Venture X Rewards is the best premium-value pick when you will reliably use the card’s Capital One Travel credit and value airport-lounge access. Its $395 annual fee is far below The Platinum Card’s fee, but the headline fee is not automatically offset for every cardholder.

Key terms

  • Annual fee: $395.
  • Annual travel credit: $300 toward bookings through Capital One Travel.
  • Anniversary benefit: 10,000 miles beginning on the first anniversary.
  • Earning: 2x miles on general purchases, with higher rewards available through Capital One Travel.
  • Lounge access: Access to Capital One Lounge and Landing locations, along with participating Priority Pass lounges, subject to the current access rules.
  • Security-program credit: Up to $120 for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

The basic fee calculation is straightforward but conditional: $395 minus a usable $300 Capital One Travel credit leaves $95 before assigning any value to the anniversary miles. That calculation only works if you would make eligible Capital One Travel purchases anyway and consider the portal’s prices, availability and cancellation terms acceptable. The 10,000 anniversary miles do not arrive immediately; they begin on the first anniversary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Venture X is especially compelling for travelers who pass through airports with a Capital One Lounge, Landing location or participating Priority Pass lounge. Lounge access has little practical value if your usual airports do not offer convenient locations or if you rarely travel.

Best fit: A frequent traveler who can use the full portal credit, wants lounge access and is comfortable managing a premium card.

Watch-outs: The $300 credit is restricted to Capital One Travel, and the anniversary benefit is delayed. Do not value either benefit as unrestricted cash. Check current guest, authorized-user and lounge-access rules before applying.

Rank #2

3. Best luxury travel benefits: The Platinum Card from American Express

The Platinum Card from American Express is the luxury-benefits choice, not the default recommendation for everyone. Its $895 annual fee can make sense for a frequent flyer who will use airport lounges, premium hotel benefits and multiple credits. It is difficult to justify if you will use only one or two of the advertised benefits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Key terms

  • Annual fee: $895.
  • Earning: 5x Membership Rewards points on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, and 5x on prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel.
  • Lounge access: American Express lists access to a Global Lounge Collection of more than 1,550 lounges as of January 2026. Actual access depends on the lounge, itinerary, location and current program rules.
  • Hotel credits: Up to $600 for eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings.
  • Airline incidental credit: Up to $200.
  • Uber benefits: Up to $200 in Uber Cash and up to $120 in Uber One credits.
  • CLEAR+: Up to $209.
  • Other benefits: Additional lifestyle credits may be available under the current terms.

These are issuer-stated maximum credits, not guaranteed annual savings. Many require enrollment, a selected airline, eligible merchants, a particular booking method or an account in good standing. A credit also has less value if you would not have purchased the underlying service.

The card’s strongest argument is the combination of premium lounge access and travel-related benefits. The 5x flight earning is useful for people who regularly buy qualifying flights, but it should not by itself justify an $895 fee. Calculate the value of benefits you will actually use, not the total of every maximum advertised credit.

Best fit: Frequent flyers who value a broad lounge network, premium hotel booking benefits and several lifestyle credits.

Watch-outs: The annual fee is high, benefits can be difficult to use fully, and enrollment or eligibility restrictions apply. A traveler who rarely flies or prefers simple rewards may receive better value from a lower-fee card.

4. Best for travel plus grocery, dining and fuel spending: Citi Strata Premier

Citi Strata Premier is a strong choice when travel is only part of your spending. Its 3x categories include several expenses that many households pay every month, so it can be more useful than a travel-only card for someone who spends heavily on supermarkets, restaurants, gas or EV charging.

Key terms

  • Annual fee: $95.
  • Travel earning: 10x ThankYou points on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through Citi Travel.
  • Everyday earning: 3x on air travel and other hotel purchases, restaurants, supermarkets, gas and EV charging; 1x on other purchases.
  • Hotel benefit: $100 annually for one hotel stay of at least $500 booked through Citi Travel.
  • Other features: No foreign-transaction fees are advertised, along with travel protections, subject to current terms.

The $100 hotel benefit is valuable only when you have a qualifying $500-or-more stay through Citi Travel. It is not a universal $100 statement credit. Booking through the portal may also affect cancellation terms, inventory and price, so compare the complete booking conditions with a direct reservation.

Citi’s ThankYou points offer travel-oriented redemption and transfer paths, but points from different issuers are not interchangeable. Compare the participating programs, transfer ratios, minimums and availability before assuming that a particular redemption will work.

Best fit: Travelers who also spend substantially on groceries, dining, gas or EV charging and can use the qualifying hotel benefit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: The highest travel rates are portal-dependent, and the hotel benefit requires a large qualifying booking. If your spending is mostly outside the bonus categories, a 2x general-purpose card may be simpler.

Rank #3
FurArt Zipper Wallet Women RFID Credit Card Holder keychain Wallet
  • Special Design: Multi-color optional and wear-proof classic business card holder looking.
  • Plenty of Space: 16 card slots only measuring 4.1" x 3.0" x 1.1", including 13 credit card slots, 2 cash slots
  • Protect Information Leakage: Prevents your vital information/cards from unnoticed scan with 2 outer layers RFID blocking materials.
  • Extra Key Chain & Portable: Extra corns with key chain for your keys or lanyard. Portable use for shopping, traveling, etc.
  • Great Gift: Practical compact wallet is the perfect gift. Give a thoughtful surprise to Men/Women on birthdays, holidays, celebrations, or any special occasion (e.g. Valentine's Day, Christmas, etc.).

5. Best simple flat-rate travel card: Capital One Venture Rewards

Capital One Venture Rewards is for travelers who do not want to manage a long list of bonus categories. It earns unlimited 2x miles on general purchases, making it easier to use consistently than a category-heavy card.

Key terms

  • Annual fee: $95.
  • General earning: Unlimited 2x miles on general purchases.
  • Travel-portal earning: 5x miles on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.
  • Welcome offer: Capital One listed a 75,000-mile offer after $4,000 in purchases during the first three months, subject to eligibility and offer availability.
  • Travel features: No blackout dates, no foreign-transaction fees advertised, and transfers to more than 15 travel-loyalty programs, subject to current participating-program terms.

Venture is easier to operate than a card that requires tracking several rotating or narrowly defined categories. Its miles can support travel redemptions or transfers, but the redemption method affects their practical value. Do not assume that every mile has the same value in every use.

This card is less compelling than Venture X for someone who wants lounges and can use the $300 portal credit. It is also less compelling than Citi Strata Premier for a household that spends heavily in Citi’s 3x categories. Its advantage is simplicity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: A traveler who wants one uncomplicated 2x earning rate and does not need premium-card benefits.

Watch-outs: The $95 annual fee remains even if you do little travel, and the elevated 5x rate requires Capital One Travel. Compare direct and portal booking prices before choosing the portal solely for miles.

6. Best no-annual-fee option: Bank of America Travel Rewards

Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card is the cleanest pick for someone who wants to avoid an annual fee while keeping a straightforward travel-rewards structure. Bank of America lists no annual fee and no foreign-transaction fees for the card.

Key terms

  • Annual fee: $0.
  • General earning: Unlimited 1.5 points per dollar on purchases.
  • Travel-center earning: 3 points per dollar on travel booked through the Bank of America Travel Center.
  • Redemption: Points can be redeemed as statement credits toward eligible travel and dining purchases.
  • Welcome offer: A 25,000-point online bonus offer was advertised, subject to availability and eligibility.

The card’s simplicity is its main strength. You do not need to estimate the value of airline transfers or track a premium-credit calendar. In exchange, it generally lacks the transferable-points ecosystem, lounge access and richer travel protections found on the higher-fee cards in this comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the elevated 3-point rate depends on the Bank of America Travel Center, compare its prices, cancellation policies and available inventory with direct booking. A no-fee card can still be a poor fit if portal restrictions make your preferred travel purchases inconvenient.

Best fit: An occasional traveler who wants no annual fee, no advertised foreign-transaction fee and fixed-rate travel statement credits.

Watch-outs: The rewards structure is less flexible than a transferable-points card, and the welcome bonus can change. Verify the exact pricing disclosure for the version available to you.

7. Best for Bank of America or Merrill relationship customers: Bank of America Premium Rewards

Bank of America Premium Rewards deserves a closer look from people who already qualify for Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards program. Without that relationship bonus, it is a $95 card earning 2 points per dollar on travel and dining and 1.5 points per dollar elsewhere. With an eligible relationship tier, the rewards calculation can become substantially more competitive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Key terms

  • Annual fee: $95.
  • Earning: 2 points per dollar on travel and dining, and 1.5 points per dollar on other purchases.
  • Credits: Up to $100 annually in airline incidental credits and up to $100 every four years for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.
  • Welcome offer: 60,000 points after $4,000 in purchases during the first 90 days, according to the researched offer.
  • Relationship benefits: Eligible Preferred Rewards customers may receive higher rewards earnings. The applicable tier and terms must be verified before assigning a precise value.

The card’s biggest variable is not the headline earning rate; it is your current Bank of America or Merrill relationship status. Check your actual Preferred Rewards tier, qualifying balances, enrollment requirements and current bonus calculation. Do not assume that a future balance or relationship will automatically qualify.

Best fit: Existing Bank of America or Merrill customers who can use the airline and security-program credits and qualify for meaningful Preferred Rewards boosts.

Watch-outs: Without relationship benefits, the card may be less distinctive than other $95 options. Airline incidental credits commonly have specific eligible-charge rules, so read the current benefit terms before counting on the full $100.

What to know before applying

1. Portal credits are not the same as cash

Venture X, Sapphire Preferred, Citi Strata Premier and Bank of America cards attach some elevated rewards or credits to their own travel portals. If you book travel through the issuer portal, compare the total price, room or flight conditions, cancellation policy, support experience and available inventory with a direct booking. Earning extra points does not automatically compensate for a higher price or less flexible reservation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Transferable points require more work

Chase Sapphire Preferred, Capital One Venture and Venture X, Citi Strata Premier and Wells Fargo Autograph support travel-oriented redemption or transfer paths, but the programs and terms differ. Transfers may have specific ratios, minimums, timing, blackout or award-availability constraints. A point or mile is not a universal currency, and a balance in one issuer’s program cannot automatically be combined with another issuer’s points.

Transfer points only after confirming award availability and the applicable program’s rules. Otherwise, a direct travel redemption or statement credit may be more practical, even if it produces a different value.

3. Welcome bonuses should not drive unnecessary spending

Bonus offers are among the most volatile card terms. They may be limited-time, targeted, subject to eligibility rules or unavailable to applicants who have previously held a related product. Issuers can also change the required spending amount, deadline or bonus amount.

Apply only when the required spending fits expenses you already expect to make. Do not manufacture spending, carry a balance or pay interest to pursue points. No approval, credit limit, bonus or fixed points value can be guaranteed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Annual credits have conditions

Every credit in this comparison should be treated as conditional until you read its current benefit terms. Requirements may include enrollment, a selected airline, eligible merchants, a minimum booking, a particular travel portal, prepaid reservations or an account in good standing. A $200 credit is worth less than $200 to someone who would not otherwise buy the qualifying service.

  • This is an ideal gift that can express your thoughtfulness and kindness. Suitable for any day you want to express love on, such as Valentine's Day, birthdays, Mother's Day, etc.

5. Check foreign-transaction fees carefully

Several cards in this comparison advertise no foreign-transaction fees, including Capital One Venture, Citi Strata Premier and Bank of America Travel Rewards. The reviewed cards generally position themselves for international travel, but you should still examine the exact pricing disclosure for the card and version you apply for. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends comparing foreign-transaction fees along with annual fees and APRs.

6. Interest can erase rewards

Travel rewards are usually outweighed by interest if you carry a balance. Compare the purchase APR, balance-transfer APR, cash-advance APR, late fees and any promotional-period conditions. Promotional APRs can expire, and different transaction types may have different rates and fees. Whenever possible, pay the statement balance in full by the due date.

A practical decision process

  1. Set your fee ceiling. If $0 is the limit, begin with Bank of America Travel Rewards and compare other no-fee options such as Wells Fargo Autograph using their current terms. If you can pay $95, compare Sapphire Preferred, Citi Strata Premier, Capital One Venture and Bank of America Premium Rewards.
  2. Estimate natural annual travel spending. Include only purchases you would make without the card. Separate direct airline or hotel purchases from portal bookings because the earning rates and credits may differ.
  3. Check your airports and preferred programs. Lounge access is useful only where you travel. Transferable points are useful only if the participating airline or hotel programs serve your routes and dates.
  4. Calculate usable—not advertised—benefits. For each credit, ask whether you will meet the booking, enrollment, merchant, airline or minimum-spend requirement.
  5. Compare booking flexibility. A slightly lower reward rate may be worthwhile if direct booking gives you better cancellation terms, loyalty credit or customer support.
  6. Confirm your bonus eligibility and spending deadline. Read the live offer before submitting an application.
  7. Review the pricing disclosure. Confirm annual fee, APR, foreign-transaction fee, late fees and benefit terms for the exact product and offer presented to you.

Which card should you get?

Choose Chase Sapphire Preferred if you want the best balance of annual-fee control, transferable points and travel benefits. Choose Venture X when its $300 portal credit and lounges fit your real travel pattern. Choose The Platinum Card only when its lounge network and multiple credits justify an $895 fee in your own budget. Choose Citi Strata Premier when groceries, restaurants, gas and EV charging are large parts of your spending. Choose Capital One Venture when simplicity matters more than optimizing every category. Choose Bank of America Travel Rewards for a no-annual-fee approach, or Bank of America Premium Rewards if your Preferred Rewards relationship materially improves the return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finally, treat every offer and benefit as temporary until confirmed on the issuer’s live page. The most volatile terms are welcome bonuses, annual fees, reward multipliers, annual credits, lounge rules and transfer partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 100,000-point Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus guaranteed?

No. The issuer advertised that limited-time offer as researched August 11, 2026, but eligibility, availability and the required spending deadline apply. Confirm the live offer before applying, and do not spend more than you otherwise would just to earn the bonus.

Are travel-portal credits worth their full face value?

Not automatically. A portal credit is most valuable when you would make the qualifying purchase anyway and the portal offers acceptable price, availability, cancellation terms and support. Credits may also require enrollment, a minimum booking or other conditions.

Which travel card is best if I do not want an annual fee?

Bank of America Travel Rewards is the clearest no-annual-fee choice in this comparison. It offers 1.5 points per dollar on purchases, 3 points per dollar through the Bank of America Travel Center and statement-credit redemptions for eligible travel and dining. Verify the current offer and pricing disclosure before applying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I carry a balance on a travel rewards card?

You can, but interest usually costs more than the rewards earned. Review the purchase APR and other fees, and pay the statement balance in full whenever possible.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with Chase Sapphire Preferred for a balanced $95 travel card, Venture X for premium value when you will use its portal credit and lounges, and Bank of America Travel Rewards if avoiding an annual fee is the priority. The Platinum Card is a luxury-benefits product rather than a universal winner, while Citi Strata Premier, Capital One Venture and Bank of America Premium Rewards are strongest for specific spending or relationship profiles. Confirm all live terms before applying.
