That makes the maximum category bonus $75 for the quarter. It is a seasonal opportunity, not proof that one card is permanently best for every household.
Your actual result depends on three checks: whether your merchant is coded in an eligible category, whether the utility provider adds a card-payment fee, and whether the card’s ongoing terms still fit after December 31. Use the process below to test those points before directing recurring bills or discretionary spending to any card.

What the strongest current match offers
Discover’s published 2026 calendar lists a combined 5% Cashback Bonus category for Restaurants, Entertainment and Utilities during the fourth quarter. The earning window runs from October 1 through December 31, 2026, or from the date you activate if you activate later. The offer is limited to eligible Discover it and Discover More cardmembers and applies to the first $1,500 in combined purchases in those categories.

#1 Best Overall
Discover’s standard rotating structure advertises 1% on other purchases. New cardmembers may also have a separate first-year Cashback Match feature, described on the issuer’s Cash Back Rewards Summary and the Discover it product page. Cashback Match is separate from the quarterly activation and cap, so read the offer disclosure attached to your application or account.
Why this is a seasonal fit, not a permanent ranking
The evidence available for this guide confirms the Q4 overlap for Discover; it does not establish a complete, current ranking of every issuer’s cards. A card that rewards one or more of these categories year-round could be more useful for spending outside the quarter, while a card with a different cap or annual fee could produce a higher net return for a particular budget. Treat the Discover offer as a dated opportunity and compare the rest of the card’s economics before applying.
Which purchases count in each category
Category names describe the issuer’s merchant-classification rules, not simply what a purchase feels like. Discover says merchant category codes are assigned from a merchant’s typical products and services; Discover does not assign those codes itself. The same apparent purchase can therefore earn differently at two merchants or through two payment channels.

Restaurants
The terms identify full-service restaurants, cafés, cafeterias, fast-food locations and caterers as examples of qualifying restaurant merchants. A restaurant located inside, or affiliated with, another business may be classified under the parent business instead. Bakery-classified establishments may also fall outside the restaurant definition. Check the transaction’s posted merchant name and category rather than assuming every food purchase will receive 5%.
Entertainment
The entertainment definition includes ticket purchases from movie theaters; promoters of professional and semi-professional live sporting events; theatrical and concert promoters; amusement parks; tourist attractions; aquariums; zoos; dance halls; record stores; video-rental locations; pool halls; and bowling alleys.

- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
Several common purchases are excluded or may not qualify. The terms call out golf-course and country-club fees, some collegiate sporting events and charitable events, cable and digital streaming subscriptions, amusement-park tickets purchased through third-party sites, and entertainment or resort packages coded as travel or hotel. A ticket sold by a reseller can therefore post under a different category from a ticket bought directly from the venue.
Utilities
Qualifying utility examples include residential electricity, natural gas and water. The definition also includes online or phone payments for internet, cable, satellite television, and mobile or landline telephone service. A purchase made at a physical retail store for one of those services does not qualify under the utility definition.

The terms also flag home-fuel delivery, standalone streaming, some satellite services, vehicle connectivity, accessories and equipment as items that may be excluded. A monthly bill’s subject matter is not enough; the payment must arrive with a qualifying merchant code and channel.
Activation, eligibility and the cap
- Confirm the card and eligibility. The published quarter applies to eligible Discover it and Discover More cardmembers. Sign in to your account or read the current disclosure before relying on the offer; not every cardmember necessarily receives identical terms.
- Activate before spending. The 5% rate begins on October 1 or on the later date you activate. Purchases posted before activation do not become eligible retroactively.
- Track the combined limit. Restaurants, entertainment and utilities share one $1,500 quarterly purchase limit. A $900 utility bill total leaves $600 of category capacity for dining and entertainment, not a separate $1,500 allowance for each category.
- Watch posting dates. A purchase made near September 30 or December 31 can post on a different date. Keep receipts and review the account activity and rewards ledger, especially for large bills or event tickets.
At the stated rate, the simple calculation is eligible purchases × 0.05, limited to $1,500 of combined purchases. The theoretical maximum is therefore $1,500 × 0.05 = $75. This is a reward calculation, not a guaranteed savings amount: payment fees, lost discounts and interest can reduce or eliminate the net benefit.
Merchant coding can decide the result
Discover’s terms warn that third-party payment services and some digital-wallet transactions may not provide enough detail or a qualifying code. CNBC Select’s explanation of issuer classification likewise notes that the merchant category code and the way a transaction is processed control bonus eligibility; its discussion is available at How Credit Card Issuers Classify Bonus Rewards.
Rank #3
Before moving a recurring payment, look at how the provider accepts it:
- Direct biller payment: Paying the electric, phone or internet company through its own website or automated phone system is generally easier to identify than paying an intermediary, but the posted code still controls.
- Landlord or association portal: A portal that bundles utilities with rent, dues or management services may not code as a utility purchase.
- Digital wallet: Wallet tokenization can obscure the underlying merchant details in some cases. A wallet transaction is not automatically ineligible, but the issuer terms warn that some may lack a qualifying code.
- Ticket reseller: A reseller may code as a marketplace, travel agency or entertainment package rather than the theater, promoter or attraction named on the ticket.
- In-person retail payment: Buying a service, device or gift card at a store can code as general retail, even when the item relates to a phone, cable or utility account.
For a new merchant, make a small test purchase if practical, then wait until it posts and inspect the category before routing a large bill or annual subscription through the card. A test cannot guarantee future coding, but it can reveal an obvious mismatch early.
Utility fees can erase a 5% reward
Many providers add a convenience fee for credit-card payments. CNBC Select’s utility-card comparison cautions that the fee can exceed the value of rewards; see 5 Best Credit Cards for Bills and Utility Payments in 2026. Calculate the net result for each bill instead of assuming a bonus is automatically profitable.
Use this formula for a payment within the quarterly cap:
net benefit = (bill × reward rate) − card-payment fee − value of any lost alternative-payment discount

For example, a $200 bill at 5% produces $10 in rewards. A 3% card-payment fee costs $6, leaving $4 before considering any discount available for bank-account or autopay payments. A 5% fee costs $10 and consumes the entire reward. If the provider charges a flat fee, divide that fee by the bill amount to find its effective percentage; a $3 fee on a $50 bill equals 6%.
Also check whether enrolling in credit-card autopay removes a paperless-billing or bank-draft discount. The relevant comparison is not the reward rate alone but the difference between paying by card and the cheapest fee-free method.
How to use the Q4 offer without wasting the cap
- List expected spending from October through December. Include electricity, gas, water, phone, internet and cable bills, planned restaurant meals, movie or concert tickets, sporting events and attraction admissions.
- Separate likely qualifying amounts from uncertain ones. Mark bills paid through a landlord or association, tickets bought through resellers, streaming services and packages that could code as travel or lodging as uncertain. Do not count them toward a guaranteed return.
- Check fees before scheduling payments. Record each provider’s percentage or flat card fee and any discount for a bank-account payment.
- Activate the offer. Complete activation in the account interface before the first intended purchase and save the confirmation or screenshot for your records.
- Prioritize clean, high-value transactions. If your projected qualifying spend exceeds $1,500, use the cap first for purchases with no card fee and the highest-confidence merchant coding.
- Monitor the running total. The categories share the cap. Stop treating additional purchases as 5% once your account shows that the combined limit has been reached.
- Review the statement and rewards. Check that eligible transactions received the expected rate. If one did not, contact the issuer promptly with the transaction date, merchant and receipt; classification decisions remain subject to the account terms.
Comparing this offer with other card options
A useful comparison does not start with a headline reward percentage. Score each candidate on the dimensions below, using the current issuer disclosure for every card you are considering.
| Comparison point | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Category breadth | Are dining, entertainment and utilities covered together, separately or not at all? Is the rate year-round or rotating? | A rotating quarter can be excellent for three months but weak for the other nine. |
| Reward rate and cap | What rate applies, what purchases share the limit, and when does the limit reset? | A high rate has little value after a low cap is exhausted. |
| Activation | Must you enroll each quarter, and what happens if you activate late? | Missing activation can reduce the earning rate on otherwise eligible purchases. |
| Merchant rules | Which merchant codes, payment channels and exclusions are listed? | Classification, not the product description, determines whether a transaction earns the bonus. |
| Fees | What annual fee applies, and do utility providers charge for card payments? | Fees are part of the return and can overwhelm rewards on small bills. |
| Redemption value | Can rewards be taken as statement credit, bank deposit or another option, and are values equivalent? | A nominal percentage is less useful if redemption is restricted or discounted. |
| Introductory terms | Is there a first-year match or welcome offer, and what spending deadline and eligibility rules apply? | A temporary bonus should not be mistaken for the card’s long-term earning rate. |
| APR and balance policy | What is the current variable APR, and can you pay the statement balance in full? | Interest can cost more than any reward earned. |
The available evidence does not verify current annual fees, introductory offers, redemption rules or category structures across competing issuers, so obtain those figures directly from each issuer before naming a winner or submitting an application. Terms can change, and approval, credit limits and pricing depend on the applicant.

Choosing by household pattern
You have large fall utility bills and little dining spend
Estimate the utility total that will post directly from the service providers, subtract any card-payment fees, and apply the shared cap to those clean transactions first. If the bills alone approach $1,500, there may be little room for restaurant or entertainment purchases at the bonus rate. A year-round bill-rewards card could be more practical for the rest of the year, but compare its fee and net rate rather than assuming it is better.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
You spend heavily on restaurants and events
Reserve the cap for transactions that the terms clearly describe: restaurants, direct venue or promoter tickets, theaters and listed attractions. Avoid counting streaming subscriptions, travel-coded packages or third-party amusement-park tickets until you know how they post. If your spending exceeds the cap, use the card for the highest-confidence purchases and direct the remainder to the card with the strongest ongoing return for that category.
Your utility provider charges a convenience fee
Run the net-benefit formula for each bill. If the fee equals or exceeds the reward, pay through the fee-free method unless you need the transaction for a separate, clearly disclosed reason. Keep a record of autopay discounts because losing a discount is economically the same as paying an additional fee.
You want one card beyond December
Evaluate the card’s ordinary earning rate, annual fee, redemption process and non-bonus categories after the quarter. Discover’s standard structure advertises 1% on other purchases, so a cardholder who chooses Discover for the Q4 categories should still decide what will be used for groceries, transportation, bills and other spending once the calendar changes.
Debt and credit-management cautions
Cash-back rewards do not offset interest on a revolving balance. If a $1,500 eligible balance remains unpaid and incurs interest, the finance charge can exceed the $75 maximum category reward quickly, depending on the APR and repayment period. Use a rewards card only for spending already in your budget, and pay the statement balance in full by the due date whenever possible.
Do not increase restaurant, entertainment or utility spending to chase the cap. A reward is a rebate on a purchase you needed or deliberately planned; it is not a reason to borrow. Check the current APR, annual fee, late-payment terms and credit-line implications in the issuer’s disclosure before applying.
Checklist before applying or switching payments
- Confirm that your card is an eligible Discover it or Discover More account for the stated quarter.
- Activate the Q4 category offer before relying on the 5% rate.
- Write down the October 1–December 31, 2026 window and the shared $1,500 category limit.
- Read the category definitions for your exact restaurant, venue, attraction and utility provider.
- Ask each utility provider whether it charges a percentage or flat credit-card fee.
- Check whether a landlord, property manager, homeowners association, wallet or reseller will process the payment.
- Compare the card fee and any lost autopay discount with the expected reward.
- Review the card’s ongoing annual fee, ordinary reward rate, redemption terms, APR and introductory offer.
- Plan to pay the statement balance in full; do not carry debt for rewards.
- Inspect posted transactions and rewards after the first payments, then adjust before the shared cap is consumed.
Bottom line
For eligible U.S. Discover it and Discover More cardmembers, the Q4 2026 5% offer is an unusually direct match for entertainment, dining and several household utilities: activate it, use it from October 1 through December 31, and the first $1,500 of qualifying combined purchases can generate up to $75. The result is worthwhile only when the merchant codes correctly, the provider’s card fee is lower than the reward, and you pay in full. Because the bonus rotates and the evidence does not establish a universal market winner, choose a long-term card only after comparing its post-quarter rate, fees, eligibility and terms with your own spending pattern.
