The biggest reported holiday sign-up bonus is 200,000 points from the Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business after $30,000 in purchases within six months. For personal applicants, the advertised American Express Platinum offer reaches 175,000 points after $12,000 in six months, while Chase Sapphire Reserve offers 100,000 points after $6,000 in three months. Those headline totals require substantial spending. Shoppers with smaller budgets may get better first-year value from no-annual-fee offers such as $250 after $500 in spending on Chase Freedom Flex or $200 after $500 plus a first-year match on Discover it Cash Back.
The assignment date is Oct. 17, 2026, but these offers were checked against reporting dated Oct. 26, 2026. Welcome bonuses, fees and end dates can change without notice, so verify the live issuer terms on the day you apply.

The best offer depends on whether your planned holiday purchases can meet the spending requirement without carrying a balance. The largest totals are attached to business or premium cards with high thresholds; lower-fee cards offer smaller bonuses that may be easier to earn and keep profitable after fees.
CreditCards.com industry analyst Ted Rossman describes the market this way: “A trend I’ve observed is that issuers are competing for consumers’ business based mostly on sign-up bonuses and rewards for ongoing spending.” Treat every bonus as a potential discount on purchases you would make anyway, not as a reason to spend extra.

Which card should I open for holiday spending?
Choose by matching the requirement to expenses already in your budget, then subtract the annual fee from a conservative estimate of the rewards and benefits you will actually use.

Choose a premium travel card only for a realistic high spend
The business Sapphire Reserve has the largest reported headline bonus, but $30,000 in six months is a business-scale requirement. The Platinum offer and Citi/AAdvantage Executive offer also require five-figure spending. They make sense only when that spend is ordinary, reimbursable or already planned and the travel benefits justify the fee.
Use a moderate-fee travel card for a smaller threshold
Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture each charge $95 annually, with three-month requirements of $5,000 and $4,000 respectively. Venture’s reported $300 first-year travel credit can materially change its first-year calculation, but confirm the credit’s current redemption rules before applying.

Prefer no-fee cards when your budget is limited
Freedom Flex and Discover it Cash Back both pair a $500, three-month requirement with no annual fee. Discover’s first-year Cashback Match is a separate feature whose eventual value depends on the cash back you earn. Citi Double Cash gives six months to reach $1,500, which can suit a slower spending pattern.
How should I compare a bonus’s real value?
Use five checks rather than ranking cards by points alone:

- Planned spending: Add only purchases you can pay in full. Do not buy unnecessary items or manufacture transactions to reach a threshold.
- First-year net value: Estimate the reward and benefits you can redeem, then subtract the annual fee and any cost of using a travel portal or changing your normal purchasing routine.
- Redemption flexibility: Points, airline miles and hotel points do not have one guaranteed cash value. Base your estimate on a redemption you would genuinely use.
- Included benefits: Consider travel credits, insurance, lounge access or hotel features only when they replace expenses you would otherwise pay.
- Eligibility: Check whether you currently hold the product, previously received its bonus, or are targeted for a different offer.
How do I earn the bonus without creating debt?
- List the holiday, household and reimbursable expenses you expect during the bonus period.
- Divide that total by the number of months in the offer window and compare the result with your normal budget.
- Apply only after confirming the live terms, annual fee and exact deadline.
- Set automatic payments for the full statement balance and track posted transactions, not just purchases that are still pending.
- Stop counting a transaction toward the bonus if the issuer’s terms exclude it; fees, returns or other excluded categories may not qualify.
What eligibility and timing traps should I watch for?
Chase states that its offers can vary by application channel and that a card may be unavailable to current cardmembers. Its Sapphire terms also say a new-cardmember bonus may be unavailable to someone who previously held the card or already received that bonus. Other issuers can impose their own restrictions.
Offers can end or change without notice, and some October promotions have stated end dates. A displayed offer is not a guarantee of approval or of receiving the bonus. Read the issuer’s pricing, rewards and eligibility disclosures immediately before submitting an application.

What are the most common mistakes?
- Comparing a 200,000-point business offer with a no-fee $200 offer without accounting for the different spending requirements.
- Valuing points at an assumed rate instead of checking how you will redeem them.
- Forgetting that the annual fee may post even if the bonus is not earned.
- Applying through an outdated page or assuming an online advertisement is still available.
- Carrying interest-bearing debt while chasing rewards; interest can exceed any welcome bonus.
Some card placements may involve compensation from issuers or networks. Compensation does not change the spending thresholds, fees or eligibility rules above; the issuer’s current agreement controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the same card show different bonuses to different applicants?
Yes. Chase says offers may vary by application channel, and issuers can target different customers. Save a screenshot or copy of the terms you see before applying so you can compare the delivered offer with the advertisement.

What if a purchase is still pending when my bonus deadline arrives?
The relevant date is usually the transaction date or posting treatment defined in the card agreement, not simply when you clicked “buy.” Leave time before the deadline and consult the issuer if a large purchase has not posted.
How can I estimate the value of points or miles before applying?
Price the specific flight, hotel stay or statement-credit redemption you would use and compare it with the cash price, including taxes and fees. Avoid assigning a universal value to a program because redemption rates and availability vary.
Should I keep a card after earning its welcome bonus?
Review the renewal fee, benefits you actually used and the issuer’s account terms before the next annual-fee date. Closing or downgrading can affect access to benefits and future eligibility, so make that decision separately from the initial bonus calculation.
