There is no single best car insurance company for every driver in 2026. For many shoppers, Travelers is the strongest national starting point because it leads several major rankings and has competitive sample rates. Amica is a better service-oriented choice for some clean-record drivers, Erie has the strongest latest claims-satisfaction result where available, USAA is the leading starting point for eligible military households, GEICO stands out for discounts and digital self-service, and Progressive deserves a quote from high-risk drivers and people who need specialized add-ons.
Your best choice still depends on your state, ZIP code, driving record, credit where permitted, vehicle, annual mileage, coverage limits, deductibles and eligibility. The practical answer is to build a short list of national and regional insurers, then compare matched quotes rather than rely on one universal ranking.
Data note: This guide reflects information available as of August 9, 2026. The latest publicly available J.D. Power auto claims study is the 2025 study; the next study is scheduled for October 8, 2026.
Best car insurance companies of 2026 at a glance
| What you need | Best starting point | Why it stands out | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best national starting point for many shoppers | Travelers | Ranks No. 1 at Insurance.com, Insure.com and CarInsurance.com; NerdWallet identifies it as a budget pick. | A published average or ranking cannot predict your state-specific quote. |
| Best service and value balance for many clean drivers | Amica | NerdWallet’s July 2026 overall pick, with low complaint levels, coverage perks and dividend-policy options. | Its sample premium is materially higher than NerdWallet’s national average. |
| Best claims reputation | Erie | Highest score in the latest available J.D. Power Auto Claims Satisfaction Study and a 2026 leader in three regions. | Available in only 12 states plus Washington, D.C., and generally sold through agents. |
| Best for military households | USAA | Military-specific features and competitive rates for eligible members and families. | Not available to the general public. |
| Best for discounts and online self-service | GEICO | Many discounts, nationwide reach and strong online and app-based policy management. | Discounts do not guarantee the lowest final premium or the most personalized agent support. |
| Best for high-risk drivers and add-ons | Progressive | Strong availability, accident-forgiveness programs, rideshare coverage and a broad add-on menu. | NerdWallet reports below-average claims satisfaction. |
| Best regional independent-agent alternative | Auto-Owners | Ties Travelers for the top score in CarInsurance.com’s expanded 2026 ranking. | Available in 26 states and sold through independent agents. |
| Best for coverage choices and usage-based insurance | Nationwide | Forbes names it best for coverage options; J.D. Power names it the 2026 usage-based-insurance leader. | Optional features, digital tools and purchase processes vary by state and policy. |
| Best low-complaint regional option | Acuity | NerdWallet reports fewer complaints than expected relative to premiums among insurers it evaluated. | It is available in 26 states and its sample rate is not especially cheap. |
| Strong regional claims alternative | NJM | Second-highest score in the latest available J.D. Power claims study. | Regional availability means it must be evaluated in the context of your state. |
This is an editorial shortlist, not an industry-wide award. The results change depending on whether a ranking emphasizes price, surveys, claims, complaints, financial strength, coverage or digital service.

What changed in car insurance in 2026
Price remains important, but shoppers increasingly need to evaluate how well an insurer explains a policy and handles a claim across phone, web and app channels.
- Overall customer satisfaction in J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study was 644 out of 1,000.
- Thirty percent of customers reported an insurer-initiated premium increase.
- Only 58% said they completely understood their auto policy and what it covers.
- About 32% of auto insurance shoppers used AI tools during their search.
- Nearly half of new auto policies, 48%, were purchased digitally.
- Shoppers received an average of 3.5 quotes, the highest level in the study’s history.
J.D. Power also found that nearly half of customers used multiple interaction channels. Satisfaction can suffer when a customer has to switch channels and repeat information to resolve one problem. That makes claim tracking, clear policy documents and consistent phone, web and app support meaningful parts of value—not just convenience.

Why the major 2026 rankings disagree
A ranking is only as useful as the question it answers. The leading publishers use different data, assumptions and weights:
| Publisher | 2026 result | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance.com | Travelers first, GEICO second and Nationwide third | Customer survey 40%, AM Best financial strength 25%, annual premium 20% and NAIC complaints 15%. |
| Insure.com | Travelers first, GEICO second, Nationwide third, Progressive fourth and Amica fifth | Nearly 2,000 customer surveys combined with rate, complaint and financial-strength data. |
| CarInsurance.com | Travelers first nationally; Auto-Owners ties Travelers when regional carriers are included | More than 2,000 customer surveys plus pricing, complaint and financial-strength data. |
| NerdWallet | Amica overall; GEICO for ways to save; Travelers for budget; Acuity for satisfaction; Progressive for add-ons | More than 130 insurers and more than 120 million rates, with financial strength, complaints, J.D. Power data, digital experience and discounts considered. |
| Forbes Advisor | Travelers for price, Progressive for accident forgiveness, USAA for military members, Erie for claims and Nationwide for coverage options | Editorial scoring and category-specific analysis. |
These lists are not necessarily contradictory. Travelers can win a price-and-survey model while Erie wins a claims study and Amica wins a service-oriented editorial category. A smart comparison keeps those dimensions separate.
Our framework for evaluating an insurer
For a practical shortlist, evaluate each carrier across six separate questions rather than creating an opaque single score:
- Price and value, 25% to 30%: Compare identical limits, deductibles, vehicles, drivers, mileage and add-ons.
- Claims performance, 20% to 25%: Use the latest available claims-satisfaction research, but label the study year and remember that it represents customers who settled claims.
- Consumer complaints, 10% to 15%: Check NAIC private-passenger auto complaint information, not a company’s combined score for every insurance product.
- Financial strength, 10% to 15%: Review the current AM Best rating. Financial strength reflects an insurer’s ability to meet obligations; it does not prove that claims service will be courteous or fast.
- Coverage and eligibility, 10% to 15%: Check state availability, rideshare coverage, gap insurance, replacement coverage, accident forgiveness, telematics and agent access.
- Digital and human service, 5% to 10%: Test quoting, online purchase, ID cards, claim filing, claim tracking, phone support and cross-channel continuity.
The NAIC Consumer Insurance Search can help consumers research complaints, licensing and financial information. The NAIC cautions that a complaint index should not be the only factor in choosing a carrier.
Detailed company reviews
Travelers: best national starting point for price and broad choice
Travelers is the most defensible first quote for a broad group of shoppers in 2026. It ranks first in the national lists from Insurance.com, Insure.com and CarInsurance.com, while NerdWallet names it its budget pick.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →In NerdWallet’s sample, a clean driver paid an estimated $1,653 per year for full coverage with Travelers, versus NerdWallet’s reported national average of $2,300. Travelers also offers options such as accident forgiveness in qualifying states, decreasing deductibles, new-car replacement, gap coverage, rental coverage and roadside assistance.
Best for: Clean-record drivers, price-conscious shoppers and people who want a large carrier with a broad optional-coverage menu.
Watch out for: A national sample is not a quote. Travelers’ IntelliDrive 365 telematics program can lower or increase premiums depending on driving behavior and state rules. Travelers says riskier driving may increase premiums in most states, so do not enroll without reading the program terms.

Amica: best service-oriented choice for many clean drivers
NerdWallet gives Amica its July 2026 overall designation and reports fewer-than-expected complaints, numerous discounts and useful policy perks. Amica also led J.D. Power’s 2026 New England regional satisfaction ranking with a score of 702.
Amica offers accident forgiveness through eligible Signature policies, subject to state and policy rules. It also offers traditional and dividend policies. A dividend policy may return part of the premium when applicable conditions are met, but a dividend should not be treated as guaranteed savings.
Best for: Drivers who value service, policy support, complaint history and coverage perks more than the lowest initial premium.
Watch out for: Amica is not a universal budget winner. NerdWallet’s sample annual rate for a clean driver was $3,167, substantially above its $2,300 national average. Your state, credit profile where permitted, bundling and policy choices can produce a different result.
Review Amica’s accident-forgiveness eligibility and auto and dividend-policy information.
Erie: best claims-focused pick where available
Erie achieved the highest score in the latest available J.D. Power U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, with a score of 743. It also led the 2026 J.D. Power Mid-Atlantic, North Central and Southeast auto-insurance regions.
Erie’s Rate Lock can prevent rate changes unless the policyholder makes specified changes, such as adding or removing a vehicle or driver, changing the garaging address or changing the policy. Its coverage menu can include pet coverage, personal-item coverage, glass repair, locksmith services and new-vehicle replacement options, subject to state terms.
Best for: Drivers in Erie’s footprint who want an agent relationship and place a high value on claims reputation.

Watch out for: Erie operates in only 12 states plus Washington, D.C., and generally uses independent agents. Rate Lock is not a promise that the premium can never change; read the exceptions carefully.

USAA: best for eligible military households
USAA is a leading starting point for eligible active-duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members, honorably discharged veterans, eligible spouses and children, service-academy appointees and certain other military-affiliated groups. Forbes identifies USAA as its best car insurer for military members.
USAA offers military-oriented features that can include flexible payment dates, deployment-related options and overseas coverage. It is not included in some general rankings because it is not open to the general public.

GEICO: best for discounts and online self-service
GEICO is NerdWallet’s 2026 pick for ways to save and ranks second in the Insurance.com, Insure.com and CarInsurance.com national lists. NerdWallet reports a sample full-coverage rate of $2,058 per year for a clean driver.

GEICO’s strengths include nationwide reach, many discount categories, online policy management and app-based tools. It is a logical quote for drivers who are comfortable handling documents, payments and routine policy tasks digitally.
Best for: Drivers who qualify for several discounts and prefer online self-service.
Watch out for: A long discount list does not guarantee a low final premium. Compare the actual after-discount price and the coverage included. Drivers who need highly personalized local-agent support may prefer an independent-agent carrier.
Progressive: best for high-risk drivers and specialized add-ons
Progressive deserves a quote from drivers with tickets, accidents or unusual coverage needs. NerdWallet names it best for coverage add-ons and reports a sample clean-driver full-coverage rate of $1,948 per year.
Depending on the state and policy, Progressive may offer accident-forgiveness programs, rideshare coverage, gap coverage, custom-parts coverage, minor-dent repair and pet-injury reimbursement. Its availability and endorsement terms vary by state.
Best for: Higher-risk drivers, rideshare drivers and shoppers who need specialized endorsements.
Watch out for: NerdWallet reports fewer-than-expected complaints but below-average J.D. Power claims satisfaction. A broad coverage menu should not be confused with the best claims experience.
Review Progressive’s auto coverage options and discount terms.
Auto-Owners: best regional independent-agent alternative
When regional carriers are included, Auto-Owners ties Travelers for the highest overall score in CarInsurance.com’s expanded 2026 ranking. Insurance.com also identifies it as a leading regional carrier.
Auto-Owners operates in 26 states and sells through independent agents. That model can help a consumer work with one local adviser who represents more than one insurance company, although the agent’s available carrier panel varies.
Best for: Drivers who value local-agent assistance and have access to an Auto-Owners agent.
Watch out for: It is not a direct-to-consumer national carrier, and the quote and purchase process depends on local availability.

Nationwide: best for coverage choices and usage-based insurance
Forbes names Nationwide best for coverage options, highlighting features such as accident and minor-violation forgiveness, new-car replacement and a vanishing deductible. J.D. Power names Nationwide the 2026 usage-based-insurance leader with a score of 711.

Nationwide’s SmartRide program can provide a renewal discount for qualifying drivers, but the rules and availability vary. Telematics can be useful for a safe or low-mileage driver who is comfortable sharing driving data.
Best for: Drivers comparing several optional features or considering usage-based insurance.
Watch out for: A feature-rich policy may cost more than a simpler policy. Confirm what SmartRide measures, whether the price can increase and how the data is used before enrolling.
Acuity: best low-complaint regional option
NerdWallet names Acuity its customer-satisfaction pick and reports fewer complaints than expected relative to the amount of premium it writes among the insurers it evaluated. Acuity is available in 26 states.
Best for: Eligible drivers who prioritize complaint history and regional service.
Watch out for: The satisfaction designation does not mean Acuity is the cheapest. NerdWallet’s sample clean-driver rate was $3,351 annually, considerably above its reported national average.

What the latest claims and satisfaction data says
J.D. Power’s latest claims study is from 2025
As of August 9, 2026, the latest publicly available J.D. Power U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study is the study released October 28, 2025. The 2026 calendar schedules the next Auto Claims Satisfaction Study for October 8, 2026, so a 2026 article published before that date should call Erie the leader of the latest available claims study—not the 2026 claims study.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The 2025 study surveyed 9,455 customers who had settled an auto claim within the previous nine months. It measures trust, settlement fairness, people, time to settle, communication, ease of resolution, ease of starting a claim and digital channels.
| Rank | Insurer | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Erie | 743 |
| 2 | NJM | 731 |
| 3 | Liberty Mutual | 730 |
The study also found that 26% of customers had deductibles of $1,000 or more, while 7% avoided filing a claim because they feared a rate increase. Total losses represented 27% of claims, and only 58% of total-loss customers said the valuation fully met expectations. Repairable vehicles took an average of 19.3 days to complete repairs. Vehicles with three or more advanced driver-assistance features averaged 21.5 days, compared with 17.9 days for older vehicles without those features.
These findings matter when comparing premiums. A low deductible may make a policy more useful after a loss, while rental reimbursement and a clear total-loss valuation process can matter more than a small difference in the annual premium.

J.D. Power’s 2026 satisfaction leaders are regional
J.D. Power did not name one national overall winner in its 2026 Auto Insurance Study. It reported leaders by region and for usage-based insurance:
| Region or category | Leader | Score |
|---|---|---|
| California | Wawanesa | 678 |
| Central | Shelter | 674 |
| Florida | Florida Farm Bureau | 693 |
| Mid-Atlantic | Erie | 704 |
| New England | Amica | 702 |
| New York | Travelers | 657 |
| North Central | Erie | 688 |
| Northwest | State Farm | 667 |
| Southeast | Erie | 691 |
| Southwest | CSAA Insurance Group/AAA | 653 |
| Texas | Automobile Club of Southern California/AAA | 673 |
| Usage-based insurance | Nationwide | 711 |
The study was based on 52,216 customer responses collected from April 2025 through April 2026. Its dimensions include trust, price for coverage, people, ease of doing business, coverage offerings, problem resolution and digital channels. A regional leader is not necessarily the cheapest insurer and may not be available to every driver in the region.
How much car insurance costs in 2026
NerdWallet’s July 2026 analysis reported these national sample averages:
| Driver profile | Full coverage | Minimum coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Clean record, good credit | $2,300 per year | $627 per year |
| One speeding ticket, good credit | $2,947 per year | $802 per year |
| One at-fault crash, good credit | $3,435 per year | $917 per year |
| One DUI, good credit | $4,342 per year | $1,209 per year |
| Clean record, poor credit | $3,911 per year | $1,015 per year |
Insure.com reported an average full-coverage premium of approximately $209 per month across 19 companies with usable rate data, with more than $100 per month separating the least and most expensive carriers in its dataset.
Selected NerdWallet clean-driver, full-coverage samples were:
| Company | Sample annual premium |
|---|---|
| Travelers | $1,653 |
| Progressive | $1,948 |
| GEICO | $2,058 |
| Amica | $3,167 |
| Acuity | $3,351 |
These are research samples, not personalized quotes. Publishers use different driver ages, vehicles, ZIP codes, liability limits, deductibles, credit profiles, rate dates and definitions of full coverage. State law and underwriting appetite can reverse the order completely. Use averages to understand the market, not to decide which carrier will be cheapest for you.
Coverage to compare before looking at price
Full coverage is not an official policy type
Full coverage is an informal phrase usually referring to liability, collision and comprehensive insurance. It has no universal legal definition. Two policies both advertised as full coverage can differ substantially in liability limits, uninsured-motorist coverage, deductibles and optional protections.

Do not automatically choose state minimums
State-required limits are legal floors, not necessarily enough to protect your income, savings or property after a serious accident. A useful comparison benchmark is 100/300/100: $100,000 of bodily-injury liability per person, $300,000 per accident and $100,000 of property-damage liability. This is a comparison standard, not a universal legal requirement or a recommendation for every household.
Consider your assets, income, state law, vehicle value and budget. If your car is financed or leased, the lender or lessor may require collision and comprehensive coverage, particular deductibles and a loss-payee designation even when state law does not.
Optional coverage worth asking about
- Rental reimbursement, including the daily and total limits.
- Roadside assistance.
- Gap coverage for a financed or leased vehicle.
- New-car or better-car replacement.
- Accident forgiveness.
- Diminishing or vanishing deductibles.
- Glass coverage and original-equipment-part provisions.
- Custom-parts coverage.
- Rideshare and delivery coverage.
- Pet-injury coverage.
- Uninsured-motorist property damage.
- Medical payments or personal injury protection.
- Non-owner insurance.
- Classic-car or collector-car coverage.
Availability and eligibility for each endorsement vary by state, policy and vehicle. Ask the insurer to identify every included and excluded feature in writing.
Best insurers by driver profile
Clean-record driver
Start with Travelers, Amica and GEICO. Add Erie or Auto-Owners if available, plus Nationwide if you want optional coverage or usage-based insurance. Travelers is more likely to lead on price in national samples; Amica may be worth paying more for if service and policy support are your priority.

Quote Progressive, Travelers and GEICO, then add USAA if eligible and Erie or Auto-Owners if available. Do not assume the company with the lowest clean-driver rate will remain cheapest after an incident. NerdWallet’s samples show substantial increases after a speeding ticket, at-fault crash or DUI.
Teen driver
Compare Erie, Nationwide, Progressive, State Farm, GEICO and Auto-Owners where available. Ask about good-student, driver-training, distant-student, teen-driver and multi-car discounts. Confirm whether the teen must be listed, how the vehicle is rated and whether an away-at-school address changes the policy. Forbes specifically highlights Erie’s teen rates and Nationwide’s pricing for teens and young adults, but the final result remains state-specific.
Military household
Start with USAA if eligible, then compare Travelers, GEICO, Progressive and the strongest regional insurer in your state. Compare deployment, overseas and payment features as well as the premium.
Driver with poor credit
Quote several carriers, including Travelers, GEICO, Progressive, Nationwide, State Farm and regional insurers. Credit-based insurance scoring is permitted, restricted or prohibited differently by state. The NAIC explains how credit-based insurance scores are used and why state treatment differs.
Rideshare or delivery driver
Do not assume a personal auto policy covers every period of rideshare or delivery work. Ask specifically about a rideshare endorsement, delivery use, the period when you are logged in but waiting for a request, collision and comprehensive treatment, deductibles and the platform’s coverage gaps.
Progressive is a useful company to quote because rideshare coverage is among the features identified in its 2026 coverage information, subject to state availability. The NAIC notes that personal auto insurance usually does not cover vehicles used for work and that business auto insurance may require higher limits and additional protections.
Low-mileage or safe driver
Compare telematics programs from Travelers, Nationwide, Progressive, GEICO, State Farm and other available carriers. Potential savings must be weighed against monitoring of speed, braking, acceleration, phone use, time of day and sometimes location or trip data.
Before enrolling, ask whether the program can raise your premium, how passenger trips are corrected, when you can opt out, what data is retained and whether the program is available in your state. Travelers, for example, says IntelliDrive 365 can affect renewal premiums based on driving behavior and that riskier driving may increase premiums in most states.

Older driver
Compare Amica, Travelers, GEICO, Nationwide, State Farm, Erie and local carriers. Ask about mature-driver, defensive-driving and low-mileage discounts, as well as phone support, agent access, roadside assistance, rental coverage and medical-payments or PIP needs. A senior discount may not offset a higher underlying premium, so compare the final price.
New-car owner
Quote Travelers, Erie, Nationwide, Amica and other available carriers with new-car replacement, gap coverage, rental reimbursement and original-equipment-parts provisions. Confirm whether the replacement feature applies to the vehicle’s age, mileage and ownership status.
Driver who wants a local agent
Quote Erie, Auto-Owners, Acuity, NJM where available and independent-agent carriers in your state. An independent agent may represent multiple insurers, while an exclusive agent generally represents one insurer. Ask which companies the agent actually represents and compare the underlying policy documents.

1. Choose the coverage first
Set the same limits and deductibles before requesting quotes. A reasonable comparison template might include:
- Liability: 100/300/100, if appropriate for your assets and budget.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist: match liability where permitted and affordable.
- Collision: $500 or $1,000 deductible.
- Comprehensive: $500 or $1,000 deductible.
- Rental reimbursement: record both the daily and maximum limits.
- Roadside assistance: include or exclude consistently.
- Gap, new-car replacement and accident forgiveness: quote separately and record eligibility requirements.
The NAIC comparison worksheet is designed to record matching limits, deductibles, optional coverage and total premiums.
2. Quote a mix of insurers
Obtain at least one direct national quote, one large carrier with local agents, one regional carrier, one independent-agent quote and one membership-based quote if eligible. A practical 2026 shortlist might include Travelers, GEICO, Progressive or Nationwide, Amica, Erie or Auto-Owners where available, and USAA for eligible military households.

4. Verify the rating details
Before binding coverage, confirm the drivers, vehicle identification number, garaging address, annual mileage, loan or lease status, vehicle use, safety equipment, household members and permissive-driver rules. An incorrect mileage or business-use classification can make a quote look artificially cheap and create problems later.
5. Compare final premiums, not discount percentages
Ask whether a discount is permanent or introductory, whether it begins immediately or at renewal, whether discounts can be combined and whether telematics can increase the premium. For a bundle, compare the total cost and coverage of the home-and-auto package against separate policies; a bundle percentage does not automatically mean the combined package is cheapest.
6. Activate the new policy before canceling the old one
Obtain the effective date and policy number in writing. Do not cancel the existing policy until the new policy is active. A coverage lapse can create legal, financial and future pricing problems.
Important traps and edge cases
A lower quote may provide weaker protection
Price differences often come from state-minimum liability limits, higher deductibles, omitted rental reimbursement, missing uninsured-motorist coverage, excluded household drivers, incorrect mileage or a different vehicle-use classification. Always compare the declarations pages, not just the monthly payment.

Rate Lock does not mean the premium can never change
Erie’s Rate Lock has exceptions for changes such as adding or removing a vehicle or driver, changing the garaging address or changing the policy. Read the contractual terms before treating a locked rate as a guarantee.
Accident forgiveness is conditional
Eligibility may require a clean prior record, a particular policy tier, minimum tenure, an extra premium, state approval or a qualifying accident. Amica and Travelers both state that accident-forgiveness availability and eligibility vary by state and policy.
Complaint indexes have limits
NAIC complaint data concerns closed, confirmed complaints reported by state insurance departments. It is measured relative to company size and can change with market conditions. Use private-passenger auto data when comparing car insurers, and do not treat a complaint index as a complete measure of settlement fairness, communication or payment speed.
Claims studies do not include every type of claim
The latest J.D. Power claims study excludes claims involving only glass or windshield damage, theft and roadside assistance. It reflects customers who settled a claim, not every policyholder and not every possible claim experience.
Telematics has both savings and privacy trade-offs
Usage-based insurance may monitor speed, hard braking, acceleration, phone use, time of day, location or trip information. Potential savings are not guaranteed, and some programs can increase premiums. Read the privacy notice, scoring rules, retention policy and opt-out provisions.
Regional availability can matter more than brand size
Erie operates in 12 states plus Washington, D.C.; Auto-Owners operates in 26 states; and Acuity is available in 26 states. NJM, Farm Bureau, Shelter, Wawanesa and AAA affiliates can also be important state-specific candidates. A national list that excludes regional insurers may miss the strongest option in a shopper’s market.
A brand may also use different affiliated underwriting companies in different states. Check the actual company named on the declarations page when researching financial strength, licensing and complaints.
Bottom line for choosing in 2026
Start with Travelers if you want a broad national benchmark, then compare Amica for service, GEICO for discounts and self-service, Progressive for higher-risk or specialized needs and Nationwide for coverage options or usage-based insurance. Add Erie, Auto-Owners, Acuity or NJM whenever they operate in your state, and quote USAA if you are eligible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which car insurance company is best overall in 2026?
There is no universal winner. Travelers is the strongest national starting point in 2026 because it leads several price-and-survey rankings. Amica is NerdWallet’s overall pick for a service-oriented profile, while Erie leads the latest available J.D. Power claims study where it operates. Your state and driver profile should determine the final choice.
Is Travelers the cheapest car insurance company?
Travelers has competitive published sample rates and is NerdWallet’s budget pick, but a national sample is not a quote. ZIP code, state, vehicle, driving record, credit where permitted, limits, deductibles and mileage can make another carrier cheaper for you.
Is Erie available in every state?
No. Erie operates in 12 states plus Washington, D.C. It is worth quoting where available because it led the latest available J.D. Power claims-satisfaction study and several 2026 regional satisfaction markets.

Is USAA available to everyone?
No. USAA generally serves eligible military members, veterans, spouses, children and certain other military-affiliated groups. Eligible shoppers should compare USAA with other available carriers rather than assume it will always be cheapest.
What does full coverage mean?
Full coverage is an informal description, not a standardized policy. It usually means liability, collision and comprehensive coverage, but policies can still differ significantly in liability limits, uninsured-motorist protection, deductibles and optional coverage.
How many car insurance quotes should I get?
Get at least three to five matched quotes, including national, regional, agent-based and membership-based options where available. J.D. Power reported that shoppers received an average of 3.5 quotes in its 2026 research.
Should I use a telematics insurance program?
It may help a safe or low-mileage driver save, but it involves driving-data monitoring and savings are not guaranteed. Ask whether poor driving can increase the premium, what data is collected, how trips are corrected and how to opt out.

No. Compare the total combined premium and coverage with separate policies. A bundle discount can reduce the auto premium while the overall package still costs more than separate coverage.
The Bottom Line
Best starting shortlist: quote Travelers, Amica, GEICO and Progressive; add Erie, Auto-Owners, Acuity or NJM if available in your state, and USAA if you qualify. Compare identical liability limits, deductibles and optional coverage. Choose the lowest quote that also provides acceptable financial strength, complaint history, claims support and protection for the risks you actually face.
