There is no single best CityFibre broadband provider for every household. CityFibre builds the wholesale full-fibre network, while an internet service provider (ISP) sells the package, supplies the router and handles your contract and support. The right choice is the provider available at your exact address, with the speed, upload performance, equipment and contract terms that fit your use. TalkTalk is a broad mainstream option advertising 65–900 Mbps, while Zen advertises up to 2.5 Gbps download and upload. Your first step should always be an address-level CityFibre availability check.
What CityFibre is—and why the provider still matters
CityFibre is a wholesale fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network operator, not a retail broadband company. Its fibre is built to the property, but CityFibre does not take your monthly payment or provide your day-to-day support. Instead, an ISP uses the network to sell a package with its own price, contract, router, installation process, technical support and optional extras.

CityFibre says it works with more than 30 broadband providers and is rolling out a purpose-built full-fibre network to 8 million UK homes and businesses. The providers named on its home page include Sky, Vodafone, TalkTalk and Zen. That wholesale model explains why two neighbours may see different offers, speeds or prices even when both are connected to the same physical network.
CityFibre’s provider directory was updated on 15 June 2026. It is a useful indication of which companies operate on the network, but it is not a guarantee that every listed ISP can serve every property. CityFibre says the available provider set is known only after the network has been built at an individual address. The postcode or address checker is therefore the final authority.

This list is dynamic. Some names may appear in the directory but not return an orderable package at your address, while a local provider may offer service in only a small part of a town. Treat the checker results and the provider’s live offer as more authoritative than a general list.
Shortlist: the strongest options described here
| Provider | What its CityFibre offer advertises | Best fit | What remains address-specific |
|---|---|---|---|
| TalkTalk | CityFibre service in more than 100 towns and cities; packages advertised from 65 Mbps to 900 Mbps; support for up to 128 connected devices; TV bundling is advertised on its page. | Households wanting a mainstream range of tiers and a familiar bundled-service option. | Whether your property is live, the exact tier, price, contract, installation date, annual increases and router supplied. |
| Zen | Download and upload speeds advertised up to 2.5 Gbps on CityFibre. Zen lists locations including Aberdeen, Bolton, Bradford, Cambridge, Coventry, Leeds, Leicester, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and York, plus many more. It positions the service around UK support and says it has been a Which? Recommended Provider for Broadband for six consecutive years; that is Zen’s own claim. | Users who value very high advertised symmetrical speeds and Zen’s support proposition. | Whether 2.5 Gbps is sold at your address, the equipment needed, price, contract and installation arrangements. |
| Vodafone and Sky | Both are named by CityFibre as partner providers. | People who already want to consider these established brands or their available bundles. | CityFibre’s published information does not establish a nationwide ranking, universal speed range or uniform pricing for either provider on CityFibre. |
| YouFibre and regional ISPs | YouFibre and dozens of regional companies appear in the current CityFibre directory. | Addresses where a local ISP has a better price, support model or package than the national choices. | Coverage, uploads, router policy, support hours, contract terms and prices vary by postcode and provider. |
The published offers support a shortlist, not a national league table. A provider that looks attractive in one town may not be available in the next street, and the cheapest headline price may come with a different contract length, price-rise policy or equipment package.
How to find the providers you can actually order
- Open CityFibre’s availability checker. Enter the full postcode and, when prompted, select the exact house or flat number. Do not rely on the postcode alone: a single postcode can contain properties connected at different times.
- Record every returned provider and speed tier. Save the advertised download and upload rates, monthly price, contract length, setup charge, installation date and any introductory period. Offers can differ between providers using the same network.
- Check whether the result says “available”, “coming soon” or requires a survey. A planned build or pending survey is not the same as an orderable service. Ask the ISP what event must occur before installation can be booked.
- Repeat the check on each ISP’s own site. CityFibre identifies network partners, but the ISP’s checker determines its current commercial offer, equipment and appointment availability.
- Keep the result dated. The directory and retail offers change. A screenshot or note showing the date, package name and key terms helps if an offer changes before you place the order.
Choose speed by workload, not by the biggest number
Full fibre can deliver much more capacity than a basic broadband line, but a higher headline download speed is not automatically better value. Compare upload as well as download, because video calls, cloud backups, live streaming and sending large work files depend heavily on the upstream connection.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Light use and small households
Email, browsing, music and one or two simultaneous HD streams normally do not require the fastest tier shown by a checker. A lower-priced package may be sufficient if the router covers the home and the service has acceptable upload performance. The exact minimum tier available on your address is not stated by the CityFibre directory; select from the ISP’s live options.
Streaming, gaming and home working
Several people watching video, joining meetings, downloading games and using cloud applications at the same time create a stronger case for a mid- or high-tier package. For gaming, low and consistent latency, reliable routing and a wired connection to the console or computer often matter more than moving from one very high download tier to another. Ask the ISP about traffic management, latency support and whether its router allows the settings you need; those details are not uniform across CityFibre providers.
Large households and heavy uploads
Many connected devices, frequent 4K streaming, large uploads, video production or a home server can justify a faster tier. TalkTalk advertises packages from 65 Mbps to 900 Mbps. Zen advertises up to 2.5 Gbps in both directions, which is the highest advertised speed among the providers described here. Those are advertised ceilings, not a promise that every address can order them, and the devices, cabling and Wi-Fi equipment in your home must also support the rate.

TalkTalk on CityFibre: broad range and mainstream availability
TalkTalk says its CityFibre Full Fibre service is live in more than 100 towns and cities. Its current page advertises average speeds up to 900 Mbps and a package range from 65 Mbps to 900 Mbps. It also says the connection can support up to 128 devices, useful context for a busy household, and advertises TV bundling.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Those statements describe TalkTalk’s marketed range, not a guaranteed offer at every property. Run the address checker before treating a 900 Mbps tier, a particular TV bundle or any stated installation date as available. At checkout, compare the upload rate alongside the download rate, the router model, contract duration, annual price-rise wording, activation charges and cancellation terms.
Zen on CityFibre: symmetrical-speed ambition and support positioning
Zen advertises CityFibre broadband with download and upload speeds up to 2.5 Gbps. Its explanation of FTTP describes fibre running all the way to the home, and it makes clear that availability varies by address. Zen highlights UK-based support and states that it has been a Which? Recommended Provider for Broadband for six years running; this is a claim made by Zen, not an independent ranking established here.
Zen names Aberdeen, Bolton, Bradford, Cambridge, Coventry, Leeds, Leicester, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and York, followed by “and many more locations.” The list should be treated as an illustration of coverage rather than proof that a particular street can order the service. If the checker offers 2.5 Gbps, confirm that the supplied router, Ethernet ports and your own network equipment can handle multi-gigabit speeds.

Vodafone and Sky are CityFibre partner names, while YouFibre and many smaller ISPs appear in the directory. Published provider information does not establish a single winner among them for price, upload speed, customer service or coverage. Compare the live quote at your address instead of assuming that a national brand or a local provider is automatically better.

- Support: check opening hours, contact channels, fault compensation policy and whether support is handled directly by the ISP.
- Installation: verify the appointment window, internal access requirements, drilling or cable-entry arrangements and what happens if the installation is delayed.
- Bundles: record the total cost of broadband plus television or other extras, and the price if you remove those extras later.
Router and Wi-Fi decisions can outweigh a speed upgrade
The fibre line may be capable of a high rate while a distant bedroom receives a much slower Wi-Fi connection. Before paying for a faster tier, identify where coverage is weak. A wired Ethernet connection is usually the clearest way to use a high-speed plan for a stationary gaming PC, work computer or streaming device.
A Wi-Fi 6 mesh system can help larger homes or properties with thick walls, multiple floors and many simultaneous devices, but check compatibility with the ISP’s supplied router. Some providers allow bridge or modem mode; others expect their router to remain the primary gateway. Ask about this before buying additional hardware. Mesh nodes should be placed where they still receive a strong signal, not in the dead zone they are meant to fix.
For a multi-gigabit plan, check every link in the chain: the optical network terminal, router WAN and LAN ports, Ethernet cabling, Wi-Fi standard and client devices. A phone or laptop with a slower wireless radio will not show the full line rate, even when the service is working normally.
Questions to ask before you place an order
- Is the service live at my exact address, and can installation be booked now?
- What are the advertised and guaranteed download and upload speeds for this specific package?
- What is the total monthly cost after the introductory period?
- When and how can the price rise during the contract?
- What is the minimum term, and what would cancellation cost?
- Is installation free, and are there charges for a missed appointment, extra internal work or a non-standard connection?
- Which router is supplied, how many Ethernet ports does it have, and is mesh equipment included or optional?
- Can I use my own router, and does the ISP provide the credentials or settings required?
- What support hours and contact methods are included?
- Are television or other bundles optional, and what happens to the price if I cancel an add-on?
Common CityFibre ordering problems and practical fixes
The checker shows no provider
Confirm the address selection, including the flat number or new-build designation. If the network is still being built, ask CityFibre or the ISP whether a planned date is available. Do not cancel an existing service until a firm installation appointment and a workable backup plan are in place.

A provider appears in the directory but not in the quote
The directory is network-wide and the retail checker is property-specific. Try the exact address again and contact the ISP if you believe the result is wrong. A directory listing alone does not prove that the provider has capacity, a live connection or an orderable package at your property.
The promised speed is not reached over Wi-Fi
Test with a modern device close to the router and, where possible, with a wired Ethernet connection. Separate a line-speed problem from a Wi-Fi coverage problem by testing at different distances and with other devices paused. If wired results remain materially below the ISP’s stated minimum or estimate, report the fault with the test times and connection method.
Installation is delayed
Ask the ISP which party controls the outstanding work, whether a new appointment is required and whether you can cancel without charge if the agreed activation window is missed. Keep written confirmation of dates and any promised remedy.

| Your priority | How to decide |
|---|---|
| Lowest total cost | Compare the regular price, price-rise mechanism, setup fees and contract exit cost at the same address. Do not compare introductory prices alone. |
| Fastest advertised service | Check whether Zen’s advertised up-to-2.5-Gbps symmetrical tier is available and whether your router and devices support it. TalkTalk’s described range reaches up to 900 Mbps. |
| Family with many devices | Look at both the package rate and Wi-Fi coverage. TalkTalk says its service can connect up to 128 devices, but practical coverage still depends on router placement and the building. |
| Gaming | Prioritise stable latency, wired connectivity, upload capacity for live broadcasts and a router with suitable controls; the largest download number alone is not a gaming guarantee. |
| Home working | Compare upload speed, reliability, support arrangements and router coverage for the room where you work. Ask how faults are reported and escalated. |
| Preference for a local ISP | Check the regional names returned for your address, then compare support hours, equipment, contract and price directly with the national offers. |
Bottom line: how to choose your CityFibre ISP
Start with the exact address, because CityFibre availability and provider choice are property-specific. Use the returned list to create a like-for-like comparison of download and upload speeds, total contract cost, price-rise terms, installation, router and support. TalkTalk is the clearest mainstream shortlist where its 65–900 Mbps range is available; Zen is the standout option to investigate when its advertised up-to-2.5-Gbps download and upload tiers are offered. Vodafone, Sky, YouFibre and the many regional ISPs may be better for a particular postcode, but the available evidence cannot prove a nationwide best provider. The live quote and contract for your home should decide.
