There is no single best Amex Membership Rewards transfer partner. The right choice is the program that has your specific flight or hotel available, charges the fewest points and reasonable cash fees, accepts your account, and can receive the points before the award disappears. American Express currently lists 20 U.S. partners—16 airline programs and four hotel programs—but its roster and ratios are a current snapshot, not a permanent promise.
Search and price the award in the loyalty program first. Transfer only the exact number of Membership Rewards points you need, because American Express says transfers are final and cannot ordinarily be reversed.

What “best” means for Membership Rewards transfers
A transfer ratio is only a conversion rate. It does not tell you whether a particular redemption is a good deal. For example, receiving 2,000 Hilton Honors points for 1,000 Membership Rewards points is not automatically better than receiving 1,000 airline miles for 1,000 Membership Rewards points. The useful question is how many points and how much cash your chosen program requires for the exact trip or room you can book.
Compare candidates using the same itinerary and dates. A program is a practical winner when it can show the needed award, prices it competitively, has acceptable taxes or fees, and can post the transfer in time. Award inventory, pricing, blackout dates, capacity controls, transfer timing, and program terms can all change.

The comparison checklist
- Availability: Does the program display the flight seat or hotel room you actually want?
- Total cost: What is the complete points price, plus taxes, surcharges, resort fees, or other cash charges?
- Conversion: How many partner points or miles will your Membership Rewards balance produce?
- Transfer timing: What posting estimate does American Express show, and could the award vanish while you wait?
- Eligibility: Can you transfer to the specific loyalty account under American Express’s name rules?
- Irreversibility: Are you willing to leave the points in that partner program if your plans change?
Current U.S. Membership Rewards transfer partners and ratios
American Express’s current U.S. transfer page, accessed in 2026, displays the following 20 programs. Ratios describe points moved between accounts; they do not establish redemption value. Check the transfer screen for your own Membership Rewards product because minimums, maximums, and available partners can vary.

How to choose among airline partners
Airline partners are candidates to price against one another, not a fixed ranking. The same route may be cheapest through different programs depending on airline, date, cabin, connection, and available award inventory.

- Write down the origin, destination, dates, travelers, cabin, and whether your schedule is flexible.
- Search the relevant airline and alliance programs while logged in, and record every acceptable award seat.
- For each result, note the points required, taxes, carrier-imposed charges, change or cancellation rules, and the time limit for holding or booking the seat.
- Convert the required Membership Rewards balance using the ratio shown in your Amex account. A 1:1 ratio means 40,000 MR would produce 40,000 partner miles; a different ratio requires the corresponding calculation.
- Choose the option with the best combination of availability, total cost, schedule, and transfer reliability—not simply the largest number of partner points.
Why Aeroplan, Flying Blue and Avios programs often belong in the comparison
Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, and the Avios programs (Aer Lingus AerClub, Iberia Club, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, and The British Airways Club) are all on the current roster. Their inclusion makes them useful search candidates for many international and connecting itineraries, but the roster alone does not establish a route price or guarantee award space. Search the exact itinerary and use the program that produces the workable booking.
Avios balances can appear in several separate programs, yet each program’s award chart, availability, fees, and transfer rules apply to the account receiving the transfer. Do not assume that an attractive result in one Avios program can be booked at the same price through another.

- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
When a nominally lower ratio can still work
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles and Emirates Skywards both display 1,000 MR for 800 partner miles. That conversion is not automatically disqualifying if the program has the only acceptable award or a materially lower cash charge. Calculate the Membership Rewards points needed after applying the ratio, then compare the complete booking cost with alternatives.
How to choose hotel partners
Hotel transfers require a cash-versus-points calculation for the exact property and night. Record the publicly available cash rate, the award rate, taxes, mandatory fees, cancellation terms, and whether the award room is the same room type you would otherwise buy.

| Hotel program | Displayed conversion | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Choice Privileges | 1,000 MR = 1,000 points | Exact property, dates, award inventory, and the program’s cash rate |
| Hilton Honors | 1,000 MR = 2,000 points | Whether the larger point balance offsets the number of points required for the room |
| Marriott Bonvoy | 1,000 MR = 1,000 points | Room category, award availability, taxes, and any mandatory charges |
| Leaders Club | 1,000 MR = 250 points | The property’s award price and whether a room is actually available |
The Hilton 1:2 and Leaders Club 1:4 conversions only describe how many loyalty points arrive. They do not prove better or worse value than the 1:1 Choice or Marriott conversions. A hotel program with a favorable-looking ratio can still require more points for your dates.
Step-by-step: transfer Membership Rewards points safely
1. Find and price the award first
Sign in to the airline or hotel program and confirm that the desired award can be booked now. Capture the exact points requirement and cash charges. If the partner offers a temporary hold, use it according to that program’s rules, but do not assume a hold protects you indefinitely.
2. Link the eligible loyalty account
In your American Express Membership Rewards account, open the transfer-partner area, select the participating program, and enter the loyalty account details. The partner account must be in the card member’s name or in the name of an eligible Additional Card Member. American Express says an Additional Card must have been issued for at least 90 days before that member’s partner account can be linked.

3. Enter only the required amount
Select the transfer amount shown by the Amex interface and review the displayed ratio, estimated posting time, and any fee before confirming. Each partner sets its own minimum and maximum transfer amounts. If a transfer bonus is visible in your account, verify its terms and expiration before relying on it.

American Express states: “If you’re transferring points to book a flight or hotel room, check availability and how many points are needed before completing the transfer, as all transfers are final.” Treat that warning literally. A transfer cannot ordinarily be converted back into Membership Rewards points.
5. Wait for posting and book with the partner
Allow the estimated transfer time shown by American Express, then confirm that the points arrived in the loyalty account. Complete the reservation directly through the airline or hotel program and retain the confirmation, fare or room rules, and cancellation deadline.
Fees, taxes and transfer timing
For transfers to U.S. airline frequent-flyer programs, the April 2026 U.S. Membership Rewards terms specify an excise-tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point, capped at $99. The fee applies to the transferred amount under those terms; review the confirmation screen because the applicable charge can depend on the transfer you submit.
Hotel transfers do not use that stated U.S.-airline fee rule, but the partner may impose its own booking charges, taxes, surcharges, or restrictions. The award price and cash component shown by the partner are the figures that matter for your reservation.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRank #4
Transfer timing is an operational risk. An award seat or room can disappear before points post, and partner programs can change prices or capacity controls. Do not transfer speculatively to build a balance unless you are comfortable holding points under the partner’s rules.

The loyalty account name does not match
Amex requires the linked partner account to belong to the card member or an eligible Additional Card Member. A mismatch can prevent linking or delay verification. Correct the account information before initiating a transfer rather than attempting to route points through someone else’s account.
The Additional Card is too new
An Additional Card Member’s partner account is eligible only after that card has been issued for at least 90 days, according to American Express. If the 90-day condition is not met, wait until the account qualifies or use an eligible account in the primary card member’s name.
The transfer amount is rejected
Partners impose minimum and maximum amounts, and the limits can differ by program or Membership Rewards product. Use the amount controls in the transfer screen; do not assume that a round number accepted by one partner will be accepted by another.
The points have posted but the award is gone
Partner inventory is not reserved merely because you searched for it. If availability disappears during posting, the points remain subject to the partner’s rules and cannot ordinarily return to Amex. Search alternative dates, routes, or properties before transferring when the itinerary is time-sensitive.

Recent roster changes to know
Etihad Guest is no longer a current option
American Express says Etihad Guest transfers ended June 30, 2026. Do not treat Etihad as a current U.S. Membership Rewards transfer partner; verify the live Amex page for any future change.
Cathay Pacific conversion changed
Effective March 1, 2026, Cathay Pacific changed to 5 Membership Rewards points for 4 Asia Miles. The current transfer page displays that as 1,000 MR for 800 Asia Miles. Recalculate any Cathay redemption using the current ratio rather than an older chart.
American Express’s updates page cautions that its summary may not reflect every current program detail. Review the live transfer page, the account confirmation screen, and the partner’s terms immediately before transferring.
A practical decision framework
For a flight
- Search at least two relevant airline programs for the same dates and cabin.
- Write down each program’s points, taxes, surcharges, change rules, and transfer estimate.
- Apply the displayed Amex ratio to calculate the Membership Rewards balance required.
- Check whether the airline fee offset applies and include it in your cash comparison.
- Transfer only after the award is still available and the final total is acceptable.
For a hotel night
- Compare the refundable cash rate with the exact award-room rate.
- Include mandatory property fees and taxes that are not covered by points.
- Apply the relevant 1:1, 1:2, or 1:4 conversion shown by Amex.
- Confirm cancellation terms and room type before moving points.
- Book through the hotel program after the points post.
When paying cash is better
Pay cash when the award requires an unattractive number of points, the room or seat is not available, transfer timing is unsafe, or the partner’s fees erase the benefit. Keeping Membership Rewards points flexible can be more useful than forcing a transfer to an inconvenient program.
What not to infer from the partner list
- A 1:2 hotel ratio does not mean twice the travel value.
- A 1:1 airline ratio does not guarantee a low award price.
- Being listed by Amex does not guarantee award availability on your dates.
- A displayed transfer bonus may be account-specific or temporary; rely only on the terms shown when you transfer.
- A partner’s award chart and restrictions govern after the points leave Membership Rewards.
Bottom line
Choose the partner that can book your actual itinerary at the best verified combination of points, cash, availability, and timing. American Express’s 20-program U.S. roster is a useful starting menu, not a permanent ranking. Search first, verify the final cost and account eligibility, and transfer only the amount you can use because the move is final.
