SCHB and ITOT are the closest alternatives to VTI for investors who want one fund covering essentially the entire investable U.S. stock market. VOO is not a like-for-like replacement: it tracks the S&P 500 and focuses on large U.S. companies, leaving out much of the mid-, small-, and micro-cap market that a total-market fund is designed to include.
All three named issuers publish a 0.03% expense ratio for VTI, SCHB, or VOO on the cited 2026 product or comparison pages; the published ITOT description identifies the fund but does not state an expense ratio in the available material. Your final choice should therefore rest on market coverage, index methodology, trading conditions, taxes, and whether the fund is available in your account—not on a fee difference that may be zero or too small to matter after spreads and account costs.

What VTI is designed to do
VTI is Vanguard’s total-U.S.-market ETF. The 2026 Vanguard product page says it tracks the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index and represents approximately 100% of investable U.S. stocks. That objective spans four broad capitalization groups:

Its listed expense ratio is 0.03%, or three basis points, according to that product page. The important feature is not merely the low fee; it is the breadth of the index. A single holding is intended to provide a market-cap-weighted slice of the investable U.S. equity market rather than a portfolio limited to the largest corporations.

Quick comparison of the main candidates
| ETF | Market coverage | Objective or benchmark information | Published expense ratio in the cited 2026 material | Best understood as |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VTI | Approximately 100% of investable U.S. stocks, including large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap companies | Tracks the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index | 0.03% (Vanguard 2026 product page) | Baseline total-U.S.-market portfolio |
| SCHB | Broad U.S. market exposure | Schwab identifies it as the Broad Market ETF; the benchmark name is not stated on the cited 2026 comparison page | 0.03% (Charles Schwab 2026 comparison page) | Closest broad-market substitute |
| ITOT | Total U.S. stock-market exposure | iShares identifies it as the Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF | not stated on the cited 2026 product description | Closest total-market substitute |
| VOO | Large U.S. companies represented by the S&P 500 | Tracks the S&P 500 | 0.03% (Vanguard 2026 product page) | Large-cap alternative, not a full total-market replacement |
The table shows why SCHB and ITOT are the first funds to investigate when your objective is the same broad exposure as VTI. VOO can be an excellent tool for an intentional large-cap allocation, but its index objective is narrower.
SCHB: the broad-market substitute
What it covers
Charles Schwab’s 2026 comparison page calls SCHB its Broad Market ETF and lists a 0.03% expense ratio. “Broad market” signals an objective closer to VTI’s than a large-cap-only fund: the purpose is to hold a wide cross-section of U.S. equities rather than only the biggest companies.

Where it resembles VTI
- Both are intended as one-fund U.S. equity building blocks.
- Both seek exposure beyond the largest corporations, which can include mid- and small-cap stocks.
- Both publish a 0.03% expense ratio in the cited 2026 issuer material.
What to verify before switching
The available Schwab comparison material does not state the benchmark name, the exact number of holdings, or the precise capitalization cutoffs. Those details matter because two “broad-market” indexes can include slightly different companies and weights. Open the current SCHB fund page and compare its index description, holdings, portfolio turnover, bid-ask spread, distribution history, and tax documents with VTI before selling one fund to buy the other.
For many investors, the practical difference between SCHB and VTI will be implementation rather than market philosophy. If your brokerage offers one at a lower trading cost, supports automatic purchases for one but not the other, or makes one easier to hold in a workplace or retirement account, that operational advantage can outweigh tiny differences in index construction.
ITOT: another total-market option
What the issuer says
BlackRock iShares identifies ITOT as the iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF. That name explicitly places the fund in the total-U.S.-market category, making it a natural VTI alternative for an investor who wants broad domestic equity exposure in one ETF.

Why investors compare it with VTI
ITOT and VTI are both positioned as core holdings rather than sector funds or large-cap-only products. Their stated objectives imply exposure across the U.S. market’s capitalization range. This makes the comparison fundamentally different from VOO versus VTI: the question is which broad-market implementation fits your account, not whether to abandon total-market coverage.

The cited 2026 product description does not state an ITOT expense ratio, bid-ask spread, holding count, or a complete methodology comparison with VTI. Do not assume those figures match VTI or SCHB. Confirm the current iShares prospectus and fund page immediately before placing an order, because fees, holdings, index rules, and trading conditions can change.
VOO versus VTI: similar core use, different coverage
VOO’s actual mandate
Vanguard’s 2026 VOO page says the ETF tracks the S&P 500, a benchmark dominated by large U.S. companies, and lists a 0.03% expense ratio. The S&P 500 is therefore a large-cap exposure choice. It is not designed to represent the entire investable U.S. market.
What you give up when replacing VTI with VOO
Moving from VTI to VOO changes the market-cap mix. The portfolio becomes concentrated in the largest companies and no longer intentionally includes the full set of mid-, small-, and micro-cap stocks represented by a total-market objective. That can be a rational decision if you specifically want large-cap exposure, but it is a different portfolio design.
When VOO can make sense
- You want a deliberate large-cap allocation rather than total-market exposure.
- Your account menu includes VOO but not a broad-market ETF.
- You are combining VOO with separate mid- or small-cap holdings and understand the resulting weights.
- Your trading costs, tax situation, or automatic-investment features make VOO materially easier to use.
Do not describe VOO as the “same as VTI but cheaper” when both pages show a 0.03% expense ratio. The relevant distinction is benchmark coverage, not the listed annual fee.

How to choose among VTI, SCHB, ITOT, and VOO
Step 1: Decide whether you want total-market or large-cap exposure
Start with the portfolio job, not the ticker. If the job is one-fund exposure to U.S. stocks across capitalization groups, limit the first comparison to VTI, SCHB, and ITOT. If the job is specifically exposure to the largest U.S. companies, VOO belongs in the comparison.

Step 2: Read the current index objective
Confirm the fund’s benchmark or stated objective on the issuer page. VTI names the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index; VOO names the S&P 500; SCHB is identified as a Broad Market ETF; ITOT is identified as the Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF. Similar labels do not prove identical holdings. Look for the index methodology, eligibility rules, weighting approach, and rebalancing schedule.
Step 3: Compare the complete cost of ownership
The expense ratio is only one cost. Check:
- The published annual expense ratio
- The bid-ask spread during the hours you trade
- Any commission or transaction fee charged by your brokerage
- Account-level fees or restrictions
- Tax consequences of selling an existing position
For VTI, SCHB, and VOO, the cited 2026 pages list 0.03%. The available ITOT description does not state a ratio, so verify it directly rather than inferring it from the fund’s “Core” branding. A one-time tax bill or repeated trading spread can be larger than a small annual fee difference.
Step 4: Check liquidity and execution
Liquidity affects how closely your trade price tracks the displayed market price. Review the live bid-ask spread, typical trading volume, and whether your brokerage supports fractional shares or recurring purchases for the specific ETF. These features vary by account and can change. A fund that is easy to buy automatically may be more useful than one with an indistinguishable headline fee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStep 5: Check account availability
Some workplace plans, managed accounts, and retirement platforms offer a limited menu. If only one candidate is available, use its objective and benchmark to understand the exposure you are accepting. Do not add a second ETF solely to recreate a total-market portfolio unless you have calculated the resulting weights and costs.
Step 6: Consider taxes before replacing a holding
In a taxable account, selling can realize gains or losses and may create a tax cost that exceeds any expected benefit from switching funds. In a retirement account, the tax mechanics differ, but trading rules, transaction fees, and investment-menu limitations can still matter. When the existing fund already meets your objective, leaving it in place may be the simplest implementation.
Benchmark methodology and diversification differences
“Total market” is an objective, not a universal index formula. Morningstar, S&P, Dow Jones, and other index providers can use different eligibility screens, float adjustments, capitalization bands, and reconstitution calendars. Two funds may both claim broad U.S. coverage while assigning slightly different weights to newly listed companies, micro-caps, or borderline securities.

Those methodological differences do not automatically make one fund better. They explain why you should compare the index documents rather than rely on a label. Examine whether the index is float-adjusted, how it treats real-estate investment trusts and other security types, how often it rebalances, and what happens when a company becomes ineligible. Use the current prospectus for authoritative details; the short product descriptions available for this comparison do not establish every rule.
Diversification also has two dimensions. The first is the number and range of companies held. The second is the weight assigned to each company. A market-cap-weighted total-market fund can still have substantial exposure to the largest firms because those firms represent a large share of the market’s value. “Total market” does not mean equal weight, nor does it guarantee that every small company has a meaningful portfolio allocation.

You want one U.S. equity ETF and already own VTI
If VTI still matches your desired total-market exposure, there is no automatic reason to exchange it for SCHB or ITOT. Compare the current index documents, trading costs, account features, and tax impact first. A switch is most defensible when the replacement solves a concrete problem, such as account availability or recurring-investment support.
Your platform offers SCHB but not VTI
SCHB is the closest named substitute in this situation because Schwab describes it as a Broad Market ETF and lists a 0.03% expense ratio. Verify its current holdings and benchmark details, then confirm that the account’s purchase and sale costs are acceptable.
Your platform offers ITOT as its core U.S. option
ITOT’s “Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF” designation makes it a logical total-market candidate. Confirm the current expense ratio and index methodology on the iShares page before investing, since those figures are not established in the available product summary.
You are deciding between VOO and a total-market ETF
Choose VOO only if large-cap exposure is the intended result or if you have a separate plan for mid- and small-cap stocks. Choose VTI, SCHB, or ITOT when the objective is a single broad U.S. market holding. The choice is an allocation decision, not a race to find the lowest published fee.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating VOO as a total-market replacement
Fix: Read the benchmark name. VOO tracks the S&P 500; total-market funds pursue broader coverage.
Mistake: choosing from the expense ratio alone
Fix: Add spreads, commissions, account fees, taxes, and recurring-investment convenience to the comparison.
Mistake: assuming “broad market” means identical holdings
Fix: Compare the current index methodology, eligibility rules, and portfolio snapshots for SCHB, ITOT, and VTI.

A concise decision framework
- Need the whole investable U.S. market? Start with VTI, SCHB, or ITOT.
- Want only large U.S. companies? Consider VOO, understanding that it is narrower than a total-market fund.
- Comparing total-market candidates? Verify each current benchmark, holdings methodology, expense ratio, spread, tax documents, and account availability.
- Already hold a suitable fund? Keep it unless a replacement provides a measurable operational or tax advantage.
- Still uncertain? Prefer the fund whose objective you understand and whose implementation costs and account features fit your plan.
Bottom line
SCHB and ITOT are the closest alternatives to VTI for a total U.S. stock-market portfolio because their issuer descriptions identify broad or total-market objectives. VTI’s cited 2026 page specifies the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index, approximately 100% investable-market representation, and a 0.03% expense ratio. SCHB’s cited page lists a 0.03% ratio, while the available ITOT description does not state one. VOO also lists 0.03%, but its S&P 500 mandate makes it a large-cap substitute rather than a complete total-market replacement.
