Best Alternatives to Tokenized Stocks for Buying Fractional U.S. Shares

For most investors, the practical alternative to a tokenized stock is a fractional-share account at a regulated brokerage. Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Interactive Brokers and Robinhood all document ways to buy less than one whole share of eligible U.S. stocks or exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The important differences are what securities qualify, minimum order sizes, fees, execution rules, voting and corporate-action treatment, and whether a fractional position can be moved to another broker.

Tokenized stocks and ordinary fractional shares are different structures

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defined a tokenized security in a January 28, 2026 statement as a security represented by a crypto asset, with ownership records maintained in whole or in part on crypto networks. The structure can vary: the issuer may tokenize its own security, or a third party that holds securities in custody may issue a token linked to those holdings.

A brokerage fractional share is simpler in form. The SEC Investor Bulletin dated November 9, 2020 defines a fractional share as less than one full share. A broker can accept an order in dollars or in a fraction of a share and record the resulting interest in its custody and bookkeeping system. That arrangement does not put a stock representation on a public crypto network.

The distinction matters because a token’s rights depend on its legal structure, issuer and custody arrangement. A token may provide an economic claim, a claim on a custodian’s holdings, or another contractual interest rather than the same rights as a share registered through a brokerage account. SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce summarized the point on July 9, 2025: “As powerful as blockchain technology is, it does not have magical abilities to transform the nature of the underlying asset.”

Brokerage fractional ownership is not risk-free. The SEC warns that voting rights can depend on the broker, fees may apply, liquidity is not guaranteed, and fractional shares generally cannot be transferred to another brokerage in kind. Those limitations should be checked before placing an order, not after an account is funded.

Quick comparison of the four documented alternatives

Brokerage Eligible investments Minimum documented Commission and fee information Ownership and custody Fractional transfer Key qualification
Fidelity Eligible National Market System (NMS) exchange-listed stocks and ETFs Dollar-based orders are supported; a minimum dollar amount is not stated in the cited material $0 commissions for online U.S. stock and most ETF trades; regulatory assessment fees can reduce sale proceeds Fractional interests are recorded through the brokerage custody system; exact custody language should be confirmed in current account terms Generally not transferable in kind under the SEC’s general warning; confirm Fidelity’s current exit process Broad mainstream U.S. stock and ETF selection with dollar-based orders
Charles Schwab Most U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs As little as $1 No commissions on Schwab Stock Slices trades; other account or regulatory charges should be checked in current terms Schwab’s Stock Slices terms say the investor directly owns the slices after purchase Fractional positions may not be transferable in kind; confirm current Schwab procedures Low entry amount and broad U.S.-listed coverage
Interactive Brokers Eligible U.S., Canadian and European stocks and ETFs $0.01 minimum for assessed non-recurring fractional-share trades, according to the 2026 fact sheet Pricing differs between IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro; the cited material does not establish every commission, spread or account charge Positions are held through the broker’s custody arrangement; exact legal and voting treatment depends on the security and account terms Confirm current transfer rules before buying 24,047 eligible U.S., Canadian or European stocks or ETFs reported as of July 23, 2026
Robinhood Eligible NMS securities listed on national exchanges, including stocks and ETFs; OTC stocks are excluded Not stated in the cited material Current commission, spread and regulatory-fee treatment should be checked before trading Fractional interests are maintained in the brokerage account; review current customer agreement for detailed custody language Confirm whether a position can be transferred or must be liquidated App-first access within the eligible NMS universe

“Eligible” is a live rule, not a permanent promise. A ticker can be excluded because of its listing venue, security type, corporate action or broker policy. Search the broker’s fractional-trading list immediately before submitting an order.

Fidelity: a mainstream choice for dollar-based U.S. orders

Fidelity says fractional or dollar-based orders can trade eligible NMS exchange-listed stocks and ETFs. That is useful when an investor wants to invest a fixed amount rather than calculate a share fraction manually. For example, a $50 order can be entered as a dollar amount, subject to the security’s eligibility and the broker’s execution rules.

Fidelity advertises $0 commissions for online U.S. stock and most ETF trades. “$0 commission” does not mean every transaction is costless: Fidelity notes that regulatory assessment fees can still reduce sale proceeds. The amount and applicability of those fees should be read in the current fee schedule.

What to verify at Fidelity

  • Whether the exact ticker is eligible for fractional trading.
  • Which order types are available for fractional quantities.
  • How dividends, reinvestment elections, splits and other corporate actions are handled.
  • Whether the account receives voting instructions or another form of beneficial-owner treatment.
  • How an unsold fractional remainder is handled if the account is closed or transferred.
  • Eligibility for the investor’s country, account registration and tax status.

Charles Schwab: $1 entry point and direct ownership of Stock Slices

Charles Schwab says fractional shares are available for most U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs, with purchases starting at as little as $1. Its Stock Slices terms state that the investor directly owns the slices after purchase and pays no commissions on those trades.

Direct ownership of the slice does not make every right identical to ownership of a whole share. Schwab’s terms say fractional orders may have different rights from whole shares and may not qualify for price improvement. Price improvement is the situation in which an execution occurs at a better price than the displayed quote; a fractional order that is not eligible for that treatment can have a different execution outcome from a whole-share order.

When Schwab fits

  • You need a very low documented starting amount.
  • You want exposure to most U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs rather than a crypto-network representation.
  • You are comfortable checking the terms for voting, execution and transfer treatment on fractional orders.

Interactive Brokers: the broadest documented international universe

Interactive Brokers supports fractional trading in eligible U.S., Canadian and European stocks and ETFs. Its 2026 fact sheet reported 24,047 eligible U.S., Canadian or European stocks or ETFs as of July 23, 2026. That number is a dated count, not a guarantee that every security remains eligible or that every account can trade it.

The same fact sheet reports a $0.01 minimum for assessed non-recurring fractional-share trades. “Assessed” is important: the minimum applies to the trades covered by that schedule, while recurring-investment arrangements or other transaction types may follow different rules.

Interactive Brokers offers IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro pricing models. The choice can affect commissions and execution arrangements, so compare the model shown in your account before submitting an order. The existence of a one-cent minimum does not by itself describe spreads, exchange costs, regulatory fees, market-data charges or other account expenses.

Who benefits most from Interactive Brokers

  • Investors who need access beyond U.S.-listed securities.
  • Investors who value a large documented list of eligible stocks and ETFs.
  • Investors willing to compare Lite and Pro pricing and read the security-specific fractional terms.

Robinhood: app-first access to eligible NMS securities

Robinhood supports fractional shares for eligible NMS securities listed on national exchanges, including stocks and ETFs. OTC stocks are excluded. That exclusion is material: a company’s familiar ticker does not guarantee eligibility if the security trades over the counter rather than on a national exchange.

The app-based workflow can be convenient for small dollar orders, but convenience should not replace an eligibility and cost check. Review the current order screen and customer agreement for the minimum order, execution method, spread disclosure, regulatory fees, dividend treatment, voting process and transfer rules that apply to your account.

How to choose without treating all fractional shares as equivalent

Choose by the securities you need

Start with the ticker list, not the app design. Fidelity and Robinhood focus the documented offering on eligible NMS exchange-listed securities. Schwab covers most U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs. Interactive Brokers documents U.S., Canadian and European coverage. If an ETF, foreign listing or exchange venue is essential, confirm that exact instrument first.

Choose by minimum order

Schwab documents purchases from $1. Interactive Brokers documents a $0.01 minimum for assessed non-recurring fractional-share trades. Fidelity supports dollar-based orders but the cited material does not state a universal minimum. Robinhood’s minimum is not stated in the cited material. Do not infer a minimum from another broker’s policy.

Choose by total cost, not the headline commission

Separate at least four cost categories:

  1. Explicit commission, if any, under the account’s pricing model.
  2. Regulatory or transaction-based fees that can be deducted from sale proceeds.
  3. The bid-ask spread and any execution difference between your order and the displayed quote.
  4. Account, data, currency-conversion or other charges that may apply to your account type.

Fidelity’s $0 online commission still comes with a warning that regulatory assessment fees can reduce sale proceeds. Schwab says Stock Slices have no commissions, while its terms warn that fractional orders may not receive price improvement. Interactive Brokers’ Lite and Pro models have different pricing. Robinhood’s current costs must be checked in its account disclosures.

Choose by control over execution

Fractional orders can have different order types, timing and execution treatment from whole-share orders. The supplied broker descriptions do not establish a common set of market, limit or extended-hours rules. Before trading, open the broker’s order ticket and terms and identify which order types are available for the specific fractional security. If a particular execution control is essential, do not assume that whole-share functionality carries over.

Choose by recurring investing and dividends

Recurring-investment availability and dividend-reinvestment behavior are not established uniformly in the cited material. Check whether the broker allows recurring dollar purchases, whether dividends are paid as cash or reinvested into a fraction, and whether a cash dividend can be created by a residual amount that is too small to reinvest.

Rights, corporate actions and liquidity you must understand

Voting rights

The SEC Investor Bulletin says voting rights depend on the broker. Some brokers may aggregate fractional interests and vote according to a stated policy; others may limit or omit voting instructions for a fractional remainder. Read the broker’s current agreement for the exact process rather than assuming that one-quarter of a share produces one-quarter of a vote.

Dividends and distributions

A fractional holder generally expects an economic share of a cash distribution, but the timing, rounding and reinvestment method are account-specific. A broker may credit cash, reinvest it, or apply a documented rounding rule. Confirm the policy for the security before relying on dividend income.

Stock splits and reverse splits

Splits can create additional fractional digits, cash in lieu of a remainder, or another adjustment under the broker’s corporate-action process. Reverse splits can reduce a small position to a cash payment. The treatment is not stated identically for all four services, so consult the corporate-action notice attached to your account.

Liquidity and sale execution

The SEC warns that liquidity for fractional shares is not guaranteed. In practice, the broker may execute an aggregated order or apply a specific dealing window. A position that looks easy to sell in an app can still have different timing or price treatment from a whole-share order. Read the order confirmation and the fractional-trading disclosure after execution.

Transfer and account portability

Fractional shares generally cannot be transferred to another brokerage in kind, according to the SEC Investor Bulletin. A transfer may therefore leave the fractional remainder behind, require the broker to sell it and send cash, or involve another process described in the account agreement. Whole shares in the same account may be portable while the fractional portion is not.

Before opening an account, ask the receiving broker three questions:

  • Will it accept fractional positions from an automated transfer?
  • If not, will the delivering broker liquidate only the fraction or the entire position?
  • How will the cash remainder, cost basis and tax reporting be delivered?

Do not treat a fractional balance as permanently locked, but do treat portability as an unresolved operational issue until both brokers confirm the procedure.

A practical purchase process

  1. Confirm the account. Check that your country, account registration and identity-verification status permit the intended security and fractional feature.
  2. Check the ticker. Search the broker’s eligibility tool or order ticket. Confirm the listing venue, share class and ETF status; do not rely only on the company name.
  3. Read the fractional disclosure. Look for minimums, order types, execution windows, spread or price-improvement treatment, liquidity language and regulatory fees.
  4. Decide on dollars or shares. Use a dollar order when you want a fixed contribution; use a share quantity when you need a defined fraction and the broker permits it.
  5. Review the preview. Check estimated quantity, estimated price, commission, regulatory charges and any warning that the order will be aggregated or handled differently from a whole-share order.
  6. Submit and save the confirmation. Keep the executed quantity, price, fees and timestamp for your records.
  7. Set post-trade elections. Review dividend reinvestment, recurring purchases and corporate-action preferences separately; they may not be enabled by the purchase itself.
  8. Recheck before a transfer. Ask how the fractional remainder will be handled before moving the account or closing it.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Confusing a token with a share. A crypto token linked to securities can have different legal rights and custody arrangements. Identify the issuer, custodian and contractual claim.
  • Assuming every ticker qualifies. OTC securities are specifically excluded from Robinhood’s documented fractional program, and each broker maintains its own eligibility list.
  • Reading “zero commission” as “zero cost.” Regulatory fees, spreads and other charges can still affect the result.
  • Assuming fractional and whole-share orders behave identically. Schwab notes different rights and possible loss of price improvement; other brokers may impose their own execution rules.
  • Ignoring the exit route. A fractional position may not transfer in kind. Plan for a cash remainder or liquidation if you later move brokers.
  • Using an outdated minimum. Minimums and eligible-security lists can change. Verify the order ticket and current terms on the day of purchase.

Bottom-line decision framework

Your priority Most relevant documented option Why Check before committing
Broad mainstream U.S. stock and ETF selection with dollar orders Fidelity Supports dollar-based orders for eligible NMS stocks and ETFs Ticker eligibility, order types, regulatory assessment fees and corporate-action handling
Lowest stated entry amount Charles Schwab Stock Slices can start at $1 Rights differences, price-improvement treatment and transfer process
International breadth Interactive Brokers Supports eligible U.S., Canadian and European stocks and ETFs; 24,047 were reported eligible as of July 23, 2026 Lite versus Pro pricing, exact security eligibility and account-country rules
App-first access to exchange-listed securities Robinhood Supports eligible NMS stocks and ETFs listed on national exchanges OTC exclusion, current minimum, execution costs and portability

The safest general principle is to use the broker whose eligibility list, custody terms, execution rules and transfer process you can understand before buying. Fractional brokerage shares can provide convenient access to expensive stocks and ETFs without creating a crypto-network representation, but the fraction is still a specialized position with its own rights, costs and exit constraints.
