For most moderate-risk investors, a conservative hybrid fund is the simplest alternative to Prism Hybrid Long-Short Fund Direct Plan Growth. It keeps debt as the portfolio ballast and uses a smaller equity allocation, without requiring you to accept Prism’s interval liquidity, short-derivative exposure and ₹10 lakh minimum investment. A multi-asset fund is the better fit when diversification beyond stocks and bonds matters more than simplicity. An arbitrage fund can reduce directional equity exposure, but it is not a like-for-like substitute for long-term capital appreciation. Aggressive hybrid funds generally carry too much equity risk for a genuinely moderate-risk brief.
There is no reliable performance ranking against Prism yet: the fund’s official page showed returns as “NA” on 16 October 2026. The choice therefore has to be based on construction, liquidity, risk, access and costs rather than an assumed outperformance claim.

What Prism Hybrid Long-Short Fund is—and why the alternative decision is different
Prism Hybrid Long-Short Fund Direct Plan Growth is an interval investment strategy investing in equity and debt securities, with limited short exposure in equity and debt through derivatives. Its asset-allocation process is described as flexible: the asset manager can respond to market conditions, valuations and risk signals rather than following a permanently fixed equity/debt mix. The stated objective is risk-first and lower volatility, but the outcome depends on the manager’s model, implementation and derivative positions.
The official product page listed a Risk Band Level 2, nil exit load, a minimum investment of ₹10,00,000, a minimum SIP of ₹10,000, ₹240.02 crore AUM and redemption twice weekly, all stated as of 16 October 2026. The same page displayed returns as “NA,” so there is no verified return series to use for a performance comparison.

Prism also carries a liquidity and product-structure risk that a conventional open-ended mutual fund may not. Its statutory disclosure says: “Investments in Specialized Investment Fund involves relatively higher risk including potential loss of capital, liquidity risk and market volatility.” That warning applies even though the product is marketed with a lower-volatility, risk-first approach.
Consequently, an alternative should not be selected merely because it has the word “hybrid” in its name. Check whether it has fixed or flexible allocation, how much equity and credit risk it takes, whether it uses derivatives, how often you can transact, and whether the minimum investment fits your finances.
At-a-glance comparison
| Option | Portfolio idea | Best suited to | Main risk or limitation | Liquidity and access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prism Hybrid Long-Short Fund Direct Plan Growth | Flexible equity and debt allocation with limited long/short derivative exposure | An investor who understands specialized-fund, model and interval-liquidity risk | Potential capital loss, derivative and execution risk; no published return series on the current page | Redemption twice weekly; ₹10,00,000 minimum and ₹10,000 minimum SIP; nil exit load, as stated 16 October 2026 |
| Conservative hybrid fund | Debt-dominated portfolio with a smaller equity allocation | A moderate or conservative investor seeking simpler construction and debt ballast | Interest-rate, credit and equity risk; returns are not guaranteed | Check each scheme’s dealing frequency, exit load, minimum and direct-plan expense ratio |
| Multi-asset fund | At least several asset classes, potentially equity, fixed income, derivatives and commodities such as gold | An investor prioritising diversification across different return drivers | Allocation bands, rebalancing and commodity exposure vary substantially by scheme | Usually assessable through the scheme’s own dealing terms; do not assume identical liquidity across funds |
| Aggressive hybrid fund | Large equity allocation with a debt component for some stability | A long-horizon investor who can tolerate materially larger equity drawdowns | Higher equity-market risk than a moderate-risk substitute | Check the specific scheme’s dealing terms, exit load and minimum |
| Arbitrage fund | Offsetting cash-market and futures positions intended to capture price differences | A cautious investor seeking low directional equity exposure | Spreads, transaction costs, derivative liquidity and tax treatment can reduce outcomes | Verify each fund’s dealing terms; it does not replicate Prism’s flexible capital-appreciation objective |
1. Conservative hybrid funds: the clearest lower-complexity substitute
Conservative hybrid funds are the first place to look when “moderate risk” means protecting a large debt allocation while retaining some equity participation. AMFI describes hybrid funds as combining equities and debt, with the permitted proportion set out in each scheme’s information document. In a conservative hybrid fund, debt is intended to dominate and equity is limited relative to an aggressive hybrid fund.

- The portfolio is easier to understand than a strategy that can take long and short derivative positions.
- Debt exposure can provide a ballast when equity markets fall, although it cannot eliminate losses.
- You can compare familiar measures such as portfolio duration, credit quality, equity percentage, exit load and direct-plan cost.
- The approach does not require you to accept Prism’s interval structure or ₹10 lakh entry threshold.
Risks that remain
“Conservative” does not mean risk-free. A fund can lose value when interest rates rise, when a debt issuer’s credit quality deteriorates or when its equity holdings decline. A scheme with longer duration can be more sensitive to rate moves; a scheme with lower-rated credit can carry greater default and spread risk. Review the latest portfolio, maturity profile, credit ratings and equity allocation rather than relying on the category label alone.

| Holding period | Average rolling return | Standard deviation | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| One year | 10.17% | 4.29% | Shorter rolling periods can show more variation |
| Three years | 11.46% | 0.71% | A historical observation, not an expected annual return |
| Five years | 9.71% | 0.28% | Still backward-looking and not a guarantee |
Those figures describe this fund’s historical rolling experience through the factsheet’s reporting date. They should not be converted into a promised return, and they cannot establish that the fund will outperform Prism, whose official page did not publish a return series.
2. Multi-asset funds: broader diversification, more variation between schemes
AMFI describes multi-asset funds as investing across several asset classes. Depending on the scheme, those assets can include equity, fixed income, derivatives and commodities such as gold. This can reduce dependence on one market, but “multi-asset” is not a single uniform risk profile.

When a multi-asset fund makes sense
- You want the portfolio to draw returns from more than stocks and bonds.
- You prefer a stated rebalancing process to making separate allocation decisions yourself.
- You can accept that gold, commodities or derivative exposure may behave differently from both equity and debt.
What to compare before investing
- Minimum allocation: Read the scheme information document to see the minimum and maximum permitted exposure to each asset class.
- Rebalancing rules: Determine whether the manager rebalances on a schedule, within valuation bands or at discretion.
- Commodity implementation: Identify whether gold or another commodity is held through an approved instrument and how that affects costs and tracking.
- Debt quality and duration: Diversification does not compensate for excessive credit or interest-rate risk.
- Equity concentration: Two multi-asset funds can have very different equity percentages and therefore very different drawdowns.
A multi-asset fund can be a better diversification tool than Prism for an investor who does not want short exposure, but it is not automatically safer. A flexible allocation range may produce a higher or lower equity position than you expect at any given time.
3. Aggressive hybrid funds: usually too equity-heavy for a moderate-risk brief
Aggressive hybrid funds are designed for growth with some stability, but their larger equity allocation makes them a higher-risk substitute. AMFI’s guidance links higher equity allocation with higher risk. During an equity-market correction, the debt sleeve may soften the decline but will not prevent a substantial fall in the fund’s net asset value.
Consider one only if all of these are true
- Your investment horizon is long enough to recover from a major equity drawdown.
- Your emergency reserve and near-term spending needs are funded separately.
- You can continue holding through a large temporary loss without selling under pressure.
- You are deliberately seeking growth rather than a lower-volatility experience.
If your reason for leaving Prism is concern about derivatives, an aggressive hybrid fund solves only the derivatives question; it may increase your ordinary equity risk instead. Compare the equity range and historical drawdowns with your capacity for loss before treating it as an alternative.

4. Arbitrage funds: lower directional exposure, different objective
AMFI explains that arbitrage funds take offsetting cash-market and futures positions to capture price differences. Because the long and short positions are designed to offset market direction, they are considered suitable for cautious investors seeking participation in volatile markets without as much directional equity risk.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why an arbitrage fund can be useful
- It can reduce dependence on whether the broad equity market rises or falls.
- The strategy is more mechanical than a flexible long/short allocation model.
- It may suit money that needs a relatively cautious parking vehicle, subject to the scheme’s own risk and dealing terms.
Why it is not a direct replacement
Arbitrage returns depend on the availability of spreads, transaction costs, derivative liquidity and tax treatment. When spreads are narrow, the opportunity set can be less attractive. The strategy is designed to harvest pricing differences, not to make flexible equity-and-debt capital-allocation decisions. Select it when low directional exposure is the priority, not because you expect it to reproduce Prism’s return objective.
How to choose among the alternatives
Step 1: Define the loss you can actually tolerate
Do not use a risk label as a substitute for a personal loss limit. Ask how much of the investment could fall before you would need the money, and whether a temporary loss would force you to sell. Include existing equity, debt, gold, property and cash holdings: a fund that appears moderate in isolation may make the whole portfolio aggressive.
Step 2: Match the liquidity to the liability
Prism’s twice-weekly redemption schedule is different from an ordinary open-ended dealing arrangement. If the money may be needed for an emergency, tax payment, tuition or a house purchase, keep that amount in an instrument whose access terms match the deadline. Read cut-off times, settlement timing, exit loads and any suspension or gate provisions before investing.
Step 3: Compare construction, not labels
Write down the target or permitted equity percentage, debt duration, credit quality, derivative use and rebalancing method for each candidate. A conservative hybrid with high credit risk and a multi-asset fund with a high equity ceiling may be riskier than their names suggest.

Step 4: Check costs and minimums
Compare the direct-plan expense ratio, transaction costs embedded in derivative strategies, exit load, minimum lump sum and SIP amount. Prism’s stated ₹10,00,000 minimum and ₹10,000 minimum SIP can rule it out before investment risk is considered. A lower expense ratio is helpful, but it does not compensate for a portfolio that is unsuitable for your time horizon.
Step 5: Verify tax treatment for your circumstances
Tax outcomes depend on the fund structure, holding period, transaction type and the investor’s tax position, and rules can change. Obtain the current scheme documents and confirm the applicable treatment with a qualified tax professional before switching. Do not choose an arbitrage, hybrid or multi-asset fund solely on an assumed tax category.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When each option is the most defensible choice
| Your priority | Most defensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Simplicity and a debt-heavy portfolio | Conservative hybrid fund | It generally uses a smaller equity allocation and avoids dependence on a long/short derivative model. |
| Diversification beyond equity and debt | Multi-asset fund | It can combine several asset classes, provided you accept the scheme’s specific allocation and rebalancing rules. |
| Low directional equity exposure | Arbitrage fund | Offsetting cash and futures positions seek spread income rather than a broad market call. |
| Long-term growth and tolerance for larger drawdowns | Aggressive hybrid fund | The larger equity allocation can support growth but raises risk materially. |
| Flexible allocation with specialized-fund features | Prism, only after due diligence | You must understand interval liquidity, derivatives, model risk, the ₹10 lakh minimum and the lack of a published return history. |
Due-diligence checklist before you switch
- Read the latest scheme information document and key information memorandum.
- Confirm the current riskometer and understand that it is scheme-specific, not a personal risk score.
- Review the portfolio’s equity percentage, debt duration, credit ratings and concentration.
- Identify every derivative, commodity or short position and how it affects downside.
- Check dealing frequency, settlement, exit load, minimum investment and SIP rules.
- Compare direct-plan expenses and understand whether transaction costs are material.
- Keep an emergency fund outside a market-linked product.
- Consider how the proposed fund changes your total asset allocation, not just this account.
- Record why you are investing, the planned holding period and the loss that would change your decision.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming Risk Band Level 2 means guaranteed safety
Prism’s stated Risk Band Level 2 does not remove market, credit, liquidity or model risk. The statutory warning specifically includes potential loss of capital and liquidity risk.
Turning historical rolling returns into a forecast
The PPFAS figures are historical rolling observations. They are useful for understanding past volatility and outcomes, not for promising what the next one, three or five years will deliver.
Choosing an aggressive hybrid fund to escape derivatives
Removing short derivatives can still leave you with materially greater equity drawdown risk. Compare the risk you are removing with the risk you are adding.

Ignoring access requirements
A fund that cannot be redeemed when a bill is due is unsuitable regardless of its risk label or past return. Match dealing terms to the date on which the money may be needed.
Comparing funds without their documents
Category names conceal differences in allocation bands, duration, credit quality, rebalancing and costs. Use the scheme information document and current portfolio disclosure for the final comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is a conservative hybrid fund safer than Prism?
It may be simpler and less dependent on short-derivative decisions, but it still carries equity, interest-rate and credit risk. Safety depends on the specific portfolio and your ability to hold through losses.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a multi-asset fund provide the same downside protection?
Not necessarily. Diversification can reduce dependence on one asset class, but allocation ranges and rebalancing differ by scheme. It does not guarantee a smaller drawdown than Prism.
Is an arbitrage fund a good substitute for moderate-risk investing?
It can suit an investor whose priority is low directional equity exposure. Its spread, cost, liquidity and tax dependence mean it should not be treated as a replacement for Prism’s flexible capital-appreciation objective.
Should I invest in Prism if its returns are listed as NA?
Do not use an unavailable return history as evidence of performance. Consider Prism only if you understand its interval liquidity, derivative and model risks, minimum investment and specialized-fund warning, and can accept the absence of a verified track record on the current page.
