For most café purchases, USDC or another stablecoin paid through a merchant-supported network such as Solana Pay is the most practical alternative to paying directly with Bitcoin. Stablecoins target a reference value such as the U.S. dollar, so the price on your order is less likely to change between checkout and settlement. If the café already advertises Lightning, however, a Lightning payment can be faster and cheaper for a small Bitcoin transaction.
The deciding factor is not the token’s popularity. It is whether that café supports the exact asset, blockchain, wallet format and refund process. “We accept crypto” is not enough: USDC on one network may be unusable at a terminal configured for another.

What counts as a Bitcoin alternative at a café?
There are two different things people mean by an alternative to Bitcoin:
- An alternative asset: a token such as USDC, USDT, PYUSD or USDG instead of BTC.
- An alternative payment rail: a system such as Solana Pay or Lightning that moves a payment quickly through a wallet and merchant checkout.
Solana Pay normally uses stablecoins for a dollar-denominated purchase. Lightning still moves Bitcoin, but it is an alternative to sending BTC on the Bitcoin base layer. A managed point-of-sale service may also accept Bitcoin while converting it to ordinary currency for the café; that changes the checkout and settlement process rather than the asset you hold.

For a coffee order, evaluate the entire checkout:
- Does the café accept your exact token and network?
- What confirmation time does the merchant require?
- Who pays blockchain fees, and are there separate processor fees?
- Does your wallet support the QR code, payment URL or NFC method?
- What currency does the café receive?
- Can the merchant verify, refund and reconcile the payment?
Quick comparison of the main options
| Option | Price behavior | Typical café flow | Fees and speed | Main requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USDC or another stablecoin | Designed to track a reference asset such as the U.S. dollar; it is generally less volatile than ordinary cryptocurrencies. | Wallet sends the supported token on the merchant’s specified chain. | Depends on the chain and any processor; confirmation can range from seconds to longer. | The token and network must exactly match the café’s checkout. |
| USDC through Solana Pay | Dollar-oriented pricing through a stablecoin. | Scan a Solana Pay QR code or open a payment URL, then approve the transfer. | Solana documentation estimates a 5,000-lamport base fee at about $0.0007 and says a typical transfer settles in under one second. Priority fees and account-creation costs can vary. | A Solana-compatible wallet with the required token and any needed fee balance. |
| Lightning | Bitcoin’s market price still applies; the rail does not remove volatility. | Scan a Lightning invoice QR code or use NFC from a compatible wallet or terminal. | Designed for near-instant, very small payments with minimal fees; the merchant’s POS or processor may add its own terms. | The café must operate Lightning, and your wallet must pay Lightning invoices. |
| Managed point-of-sale crypto checkout | Depends on the asset selected and whether the provider converts it for the seller. | The seller’s terminal creates a QR code or accepts NFC and handles payment status. | Provider pricing applies. One published schedule lists 0% Bitcoin processing through December 31, 2026 and 1% afterward. | The merchant must use the provider and support the offered asset and region. |
USDC and other stablecoins
Why stablecoins fit a menu priced in dollars
Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies intended to maintain a stable value relative to another asset, such as the U.S. dollar or Treasury assets. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City wrote in a 2025 briefing that this design may make stablecoins more suitable for payments than cryptocurrencies whose values fluctuate significantly.
That does not make every stablecoin payment risk-free or universally accepted. The café may support only one chain, and the token balance in your wallet may be on a different chain. A merchant that accepts USDC on Solana may not be able to see or credit USDC sent on another network. Sending to the wrong network can leave a payment uncredited and may require specialized recovery by the merchant or wallet provider.
How a café can receive stablecoins
A café can use a wallet, a payment processor or a point-of-sale integration to receive stablecoins. Ethereum.org’s small-business guidance identifies cafés as a possible use case and describes two broad settlement choices: keep the stablecoin or automatically convert proceeds into traditional currency. Automatic conversion can reduce the seller’s exposure to crypto operations, but it makes the processor’s rules, settlement timing and fees part of the purchase.

For you as the customer, ask which token and chain are supported before opening your wallet. Confirm whether the displayed price is fixed in dollars until the invoice expires, whether the merchant requires one confirmation, and whether refunds return to the same wallet or use another method.
When a stablecoin is the right choice
- The menu is priced in dollars and you want to avoid the immediate price swings associated with BTC or other volatile coins.
- The café displays a payment request for the same token and network you hold.
- Your wallet can show the merchant, amount, network and expiry before signing.
- You are willing to keep the transaction record for a possible refund or accounting question.
Solana Pay with USDC
What the checkout looks like
Solana Pay is a concrete café-oriented implementation rather than merely a token name. Solana’s acceptance documentation describes QR codes and payment URLs, while its verification tools let a merchant check the incoming token, network, amount and confirmation. The payment-flow examples include USDC, USDT, PYUSD and USDG.

- The wallet and merchant system verify the transaction before treating the order as paid.
Fees and settlement time
Solana’s documentation estimates a 5,000-lamport base fee at approximately $0.0007 and says a typical transfer settles in under one second. That is a documented network estimate, not a promise that every checkout will cost exactly that amount. Priority fees can change with network conditions. Creating a new token account can add a one-time rent cost, and an integration may choose to abstract the network fee from the customer.
Separate the blockchain fee from any fee charged by the café’s processor. A low network fee does not guarantee a fee-free purchase if the merchant’s provider adds a percentage, a fixed charge or a conversion spread.

- The exact stablecoin requested by the café.
- The token on Solana, not the same-named token on another chain.
- Enough balance for the drink or meal and any fee your wallet requires you to pay.
- A wallet that understands Solana Pay requests and can display transaction details before approval.
Some integrations use fee abstraction, meaning the merchant or service can cover the network fee instead of requiring you to hold the chain’s native fee token. Do not assume that behavior: check the wallet’s confirmation screen and keep a small fee balance when the instructions require one.
Lightning payments
Why Lightning can be excellent for coffee
Bitcoin.org describes the Lightning Network as a way to send and receive Bitcoin near-instantly, including very small amounts, with minimal fees. That matches the economics of a coffee better than waiting for a base-layer Bitcoin confirmation. A café can present a Lightning invoice as a QR code, and compatible point-of-sale hardware may accept NFC.
Lightning is therefore a strong choice when the café already has a working Lightning workflow and your wallet can pay the invoice immediately. You do not need to move to a different asset, and the payment can complete while you are at the counter.

What Lightning does not solve
Lightning changes how BTC moves; it does not turn BTC into a dollar. If Bitcoin’s market price changes, the value of the amount you spend can change for you and the merchant. A café or processor can convert the receipt to traditional currency, but that conversion introduces its own provider terms and timing.
Lightning invoices also expire. Your wallet should show the destination, amount and expiry before you approve. If an invoice has expired, request a new one rather than trying to reuse the old request.
When to choose Lightning
- The café specifically displays a Lightning logo, invoice QR code or compatible NFC terminal.
- You already have a wallet that pays Lightning invoices rather than only on-chain Bitcoin addresses.
- You value a Bitcoin-native, near-instant checkout and accept BTC price exposure.
- The merchant can explain how refunds are handled if the invoice has already settled.
Managed point-of-sale checkout
Some cafés use a managed payment provider instead of handing customers a raw blockchain address. In one published support flow, the seller selects Bitcoin, displays a QR code or accepts NFC from a Lightning-enabled wallet, while the provider records the payment. The provider’s schedule states a 0% Bitcoin processing fee through December 31, 2026 and 1% afterward.
That schedule is a useful benchmark, not a universal café price. Eligibility, supported regions, settlement currency, conversion rates and refund rules depend on the merchant’s account and the provider’s current terms. The customer experience can be simpler because the terminal controls the invoice and status, but the merchant is dependent on the provider’s supported assets and availability.
Ask whether the café is accepting BTC directly, receiving a converted currency, or using a processor that merely displays a Bitcoin or Lightning option. Those choices affect who bears price movement and how a refund is issued.

How to pay at the counter without losing funds
- Confirm the exact acceptance. Ask, “Do you take USDC on Solana?” or “Is this a Lightning invoice?” Do not rely on a sign that only says “crypto.”
- Prepare the wallet. Open a compatible wallet, check the token balance and confirm that you have any network-fee token the instructions require.
- Inspect the request. Scan the QR code or open the payment URL. Verify the merchant name, token, network, amount, invoice expiry and destination shown by the wallet.
- Approve once. Sign the transaction only after the details match the order. Avoid sending a second payment while the first is still pending.
- Wait for confirmation. Leave only after the wallet and the café’s terminal show that the payment was received. A wallet showing “submitted” is not always the same as a merchant-confirmed payment.
- Keep the record. Save the receipt, transaction identifier and any invoice details. You may need them for a refund, a disputed order or tax records.
Fees, refunds and records
Separate the costs
A café crypto purchase can involve three different costs:
- Blockchain fee: paid to process the transaction on the selected network. Solana’s documented 5,000-lamport estimate is an example, not a universal rate.
- Processor fee: charged by a managed checkout provider, if one is involved. The published Bitcoin schedule described above changes from 0% to 1% after December 31, 2026.
- Conversion spread: the difference between the market rate and the rate used when a processor converts a token into traditional currency.
Compare the total amount shown before approval, not just the network fee advertised on a sign.
Refunds are not automatic reversals
Blockchain transfers generally cannot be canceled by tapping a button after confirmation. A refund normally requires the café to initiate a new payment or use the processor’s refund function. Ask whether the café refunds to the original wallet, refunds in the same token, or uses ordinary currency. Keep the receipt and transaction identifier until the order is fully resolved.
Keep usable records
Save the date, café receipt, token, network, amount, transaction identifier and any conversion information shown by the wallet or processor. Tax and accounting treatment for digital-asset spending varies by jurisdiction, and a merchant’s receipt may not contain all the information your local rules require. For a significant or frequent spending pattern, obtain advice applicable to your country rather than assuming that a stablecoin payment is treated exactly like a card purchase.
Common failures and how to recover
The café says it accepts crypto, but your token is rejected
Stop before sending. Ask for the supported token and network in writing or on the terminal. A café may accept USDC on Solana while rejecting USDC on another chain. If the merchant cannot verify the exact asset, use another payment method.

The wallet says you lack the network fee
Do not substitute a different token or network. Add the required fee balance through a trusted route, or ask whether the merchant’s integration supports fee abstraction. Reopen the payment request after the balance is available and check that the invoice has not expired.
The QR code opens, but the amount or merchant name is wrong
Decline the request and ask the café to generate a new one. Do not edit a destination address manually to make it “look right.” The merchant should be able to produce a fresh QR code or payment URL that matches the order.
The invoice expired or remains pending
Request a new invoice if it expired. If the wallet shows that funds were submitted, show the café the transaction identifier and wait for its verification process. Do not pay a second time until the merchant confirms whether the first transfer arrived.

You need a refund
Contact the café with the receipt and transaction identifier. Explain whether you want the same token returned or are willing to accept the merchant’s stated alternative. A refund may take a separate transaction and may not reproduce the original exchange rate.
Acceptance is still the biggest limitation
Crypto payment availability varies by country, café, processor, chain and wallet. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City reported in 2025 that U.S. consumer cryptocurrency payment use remained very small and had recently declined slightly. That is why a token that works at one café may be unusable at the next one.
Check acceptance before ordering, especially when traveling. A merchant may advertise a specific processor but disable it temporarily, support only one chain, or accept crypto only for selected products. The café’s current instructions at the counter take precedence over an old social-media post or a generic payment logo.
Which option should you choose?
Choose USDC on Solana Pay when
- The café advertises Solana Pay and specifies USDC on Solana.
- You want a dollar-oriented amount rather than direct BTC price exposure.
- Your wallet supports the QR or payment URL and shows a verified merchant request.
- You are comfortable checking network fees, token-account requirements and refund instructions.
Choose Lightning when
- The café already accepts Lightning invoices or NFC payments.
- You have a Lightning-capable wallet funded with BTC.
- Near-instant settlement matters more than avoiding Bitcoin price movement.
Use a managed checkout when
- The café’s terminal generates the invoice and confirms payment for you.
- You prefer a guided QR or NFC experience over copying wallet addresses.
- You have checked the provider’s current processing, conversion, settlement and refund rules.
For a café that offers several choices, compare the complete checkout: exact asset and network, displayed total, confirmation requirement, network and processor fees, wallet compatibility, settlement currency and refund path. The cheapest-looking token is not the best option if the merchant cannot verify it or you cannot recover a mistake.
