Berkshire Hathaway vs. an S&P 500 Index Fund: Which Is Right for You?

Neither choice is universally better. Berkshire Hathaway gives you ownership in one conglomerate whose subsidiaries and investment portfolio span several industries. An S&P 500 index fund gives you a fund interest designed to track hundreds of large U.S. companies. The fund is usually the broader, simpler exposure; Berkshire is a concentrated bet on one company’s businesses, capital allocation, management and valuation.

Your decision should reflect your time horizon, ability to tolerate losses, existing holdings, tax and liquidity needs, and whether you want a Berkshire-specific thesis or passive large-cap U.S. exposure. The comparison below explains what each investment owns, how returns and risks differ, and how to make the choice without treating historical results as a promise.

What you are actually buying

Berkshire Hathaway stock is one-company ownership

Buying Berkshire Hathaway shares makes you a part-owner of a single public company. Berkshire owns operating subsidiaries and marketable securities, but your stock still rises or falls with Berkshire itself. Its results depend on the performance of its businesses, the investment portfolio, capital-allocation decisions, management and succession, and the price investors are willing to pay for the shares.

Warren E. Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Owner’s Manual describes the company’s philosophy this way: “Our preference would be to reach our goal by directly owning a diversified group of businesses that generate cash and consistently earn above-average returns on capital. Our second choice is to own parts of similar businesses, attained primarily through purchases of marketable common stocks by our insurance subsidiaries.” That is a description of Berkshire’s approach, not a guarantee that the stock will outperform.

The same manual defines intrinsic value as “the discounted value of the cash that can be taken out of a business during its remaining life.” Investors therefore have to assess both the underlying businesses and whether the market price of Berkshire shares is reasonable. Even a strong company can produce a poor investment return when bought at an unfavorable valuation.

An S&P 500 fund is a vehicle for index exposure

The S&P 500 is a benchmark, not a security you can purchase directly. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov explains, “You cannot invest directly in a market index.” Investors instead buy a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the index. The SEC’s overview of index funds also emphasizes that index investing still involves risk.

S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the S&P 500 as a float-adjusted, market-capitalization-weighted index of 500 leading U.S. companies. Its displayed characteristics, dated August 31, 2026, say the index covers about 80% of available U.S. market capitalization. It is not an equal-weighted portfolio and it is not a global-market index. Companies with larger float-adjusted market values have greater influence on the index’s result. A tracking fund owns securities intended to reproduce that exposure, subject to expenses, trading, sampling and other implementation differences.

Side-by-side comparison

Question Berkshire Hathaway stock S&P 500 index fund
What you own Shares of one conglomerate with operating subsidiaries and investments Shares of a mutual fund or ETF that seeks to track an index
Portfolio breadth One issuer, although its businesses and investment holdings span industries Hundreds of large U.S. companies, weighted by float-adjusted market value
Main uncertainty Business execution, capital allocation, management and succession, business mix and share valuation Broad equity-market declines, U.S. large-cap concentration, changing index weights and tracking or fee drag
Cost structure Trading costs and any applicable brokerage charges; no universal cost was established here Fund expense ratio plus trading costs; fees vary by fund
Performance evidence Berkshire’s reported per-share market-value series Benchmark comparison using S&P 500 returns with dividends included
Typical fit An investor who deliberately wants Berkshire-specific exposure and accepts single-company risk An investor seeking passive, broad large-cap U.S. exposure through a fund and accepting stock-market risk

Diversification: broad fund versus diversified company

Why Berkshire is not the same as an index

Berkshire’s operating businesses and stock portfolio can spread economic exposure across multiple industries, but all of those assets sit inside one corporate structure. A problem involving Berkshire’s capital allocation, governance, insurance operations, major subsidiaries or succession can affect the entire share price. You do not own the other companies directly; you own Berkshire’s claim on them.

This distinction matters when Berkshire is your only equity holding. A diversified collection of businesses does not remove issuer risk. The outcome depends on how Berkshire’s leaders allocate cash, whether subsidiaries maintain their economics and whether the market values Berkshire’s assets favorably.

What the S&P 500 diversifies—and what it does not

An index fund spreads ownership across hundreds of large U.S. companies, so one company’s failure generally has a smaller effect than it would in a single-stock portfolio. The market-capitalization weighting also means the largest companies dominate more than smaller constituents.

Diversification has limits. The index is concentrated in U.S. large-cap equities, not bonds, cash, emerging markets or smaller companies. A recession, interest-rate shock, geopolitical event or broad valuation decline can lower many constituents at once. A fund can therefore lose substantial value even though it owns hundreds of stocks.

How index weighting affects your exposure

Because the S&P 500 is float-adjusted and market-cap weighted, your fund does not give every company an equal vote. A company with a larger publicly tradable market value receives a larger index weight, while a smaller constituent has less influence. This design is intended to represent the investable large-cap U.S. market rather than to make a prediction about which company will perform best.

Weights change as share prices, shares outstanding and index membership change. A company that grows in market value can become a bigger part of the fund without you placing a new order; one that shrinks becomes a smaller part. The index’s approximately 80% coverage of available U.S. market capitalization, reported on the S&P page as of August 31, 2026, still leaves out smaller U.S. companies and non-U.S. markets.

When comparing a particular ETF or mutual fund, check how closely it follows the stated benchmark, how it handles rebalancing, its published expense ratio, bid-ask spread or purchase rules, and its current holdings. Two funds that use the same index label can have different trading characteristics and realized tracking differences.

How returns are generated

Berkshire’s return path

Berkshire shareholders participate in changes in the value of the conglomerate and its investments. Return depends on operating earnings, realized and unrealized investment results, retained cash, acquisitions or dispositions, and the market’s changing assessment of intrinsic value. The stock’s price can differ from an investor’s estimate of the value of Berkshire’s businesses for long periods.

Because this is a single-company holding, an investor must follow company-specific information and accept that management decisions can create or destroy value. The company’s philosophy favors retaining capital when management believes it can invest it productively; that makes the quality of reinvestment and allocation important to long-term results.

An index fund’s return path

An S&P 500 fund’s result is driven by the combined price changes and dividends of its constituents, minus the fund’s expense ratio and other implementation frictions. Constituents that grow to a larger market value automatically receive a larger index weight; companies that shrink receive a smaller weight, and index membership can change.

Your realized return will not exactly equal the index’s published return. Differences can arise from the fund’s expenses, cash holdings, trading costs, rebalancing, taxes within the fund structure and the price at which you buy or sell. The correct comparison is therefore between your chosen fund and its stated benchmark, not between a fund’s result and a headline index number without adjustment.

What the long historical record does—and does not—show

Berkshire’s 2025 shareholder letter, published in 2026, reports the following figures for 1965 through 2025:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Measure in the letter Berkshire Hathaway S&P 500 with dividends
Compounded annual gain, 1965–2025 19.7% 10.5%
Overall gain, 1964–2025 6,099,294% 46,061%

These figures are published in Berkshire Hathaway’s 2025 shareholder letter. They are historical results, not forecasts. The table also compares differently labeled measures: Berkshire’s column refers to per-share market value, while the index column includes dividends. They should not be presented as identical accounting methods.

The period includes unusually successful decades for Berkshire and different market regimes. It does not tell you what either investment will earn over your holding period. An S&P 500 fund will also fall short of the benchmark by its expenses and tracking difference, while Berkshire’s future result depends on conditions that may not resemble its past.

Costs, fees and how you buy each investment

Berkshire share costs

Buying Berkshire involves the share price plus any brokerage commission, bid-ask spread or other trading charge your account applies. The available evidence does not establish one universal brokerage cost, so check your own account’s current schedule. Berkshire is a security purchased through an eligible brokerage account, not a physical product.

Index-fund costs

Every fund has an expense ratio that is deducted from fund assets. Trading costs and the spread on an ETF can also affect your result. Fees vary among funds that track the same benchmark. As a current example, Vanguard’s ETF listing displayed a 0.03% expense ratio for the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) when accessed on October 13, 2026. Confirm the current listing and prospectus before investing; the figure can change, and VOO is only one possible tracker.

Do not assume that a low expense ratio makes a fund risk-free or automatically superior. The fund still owns stocks, and a low fee does not eliminate market declines, tracking differences or the need to match the investment to your circumstances.

Basic purchase process

  1. Open or use an eligible brokerage account that allows trading in U.S. stocks and ETFs or mutual funds.
  2. Decide whether you want an ETF or mutual fund, then read the current prospectus, expense ratio, benchmark description and trading terms.
  3. Choose the amount and order type that fit your plan. Check the ticker, price and estimated transaction costs before submitting.
  4. After purchase, monitor the account, fund documents and your overall asset allocation rather than reacting to a single day’s move.

The same account mechanics apply when buying Berkshire shares, except you are selecting one company rather than a fund designed to track an index.

Which choice fits which investor?

Choose the index-fund approach when breadth is the priority

  • You want one holding to represent a wide basket of large U.S. companies.
  • You prefer a rules-based approach over evaluating one management team and one corporate balance sheet.
  • You accept that the portfolio can decline with the U.S. stock market and that the index is not globally diversified.
  • You want to compare funds primarily on benchmark fit, expenses, trading characteristics and account availability.

Consider Berkshire when the single-company thesis is intentional

  • You specifically want exposure to Berkshire’s operating businesses, investments and capital-allocation philosophy.
  • You understand that a diversified conglomerate is still one issuer and are prepared for company-specific setbacks.
  • You are willing to follow management, succession, business mix and valuation rather than treating the shares as a complete market portfolio.
  • You can hold through periods when Berkshire lags the index or the market questions its valuation.

When neither is sufficient by itself

An investor may need assets outside both choices. Neither option supplies a complete household portfolio: both are primarily U.S. equity exposure, and the S&P 500 specifically targets large companies. Your existing retirement accounts, international holdings, bonds, cash reserves and near-term spending needs can materially change the role either security should play.

Holding both does not automatically solve the concentration issue. Berkshire itself owns public-company investments, and an S&P 500 fund may also own companies that overlap with Berkshire’s portfolio. Review your total exposure across every account instead of judging diversification from the number of tickers alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision framework

  1. Set the time horizon. Money needed soon has less capacity to absorb an equity-market decline than money earmarked for a distant goal.
  2. Define the loss you can tolerate. Ask how you would respond if the holding dropped sharply. A plan that forces a sale during a decline is not a workable long-term plan.
  3. Map current exposure. Employer stock, retirement funds and other accounts may already leave you heavily concentrated in U.S. large-cap companies or in a single issuer.
  4. Separate conviction from familiarity. Berkshire’s recognizable name does not remove single-company risk, and an index fund’s simplicity does not remove market risk.
  5. Check taxes and liquidity. Account type, taxable gains, dividend treatment and the need to access cash can affect implementation. These details are personal and are not resolved by choosing one ticker.
  6. Verify current documents. Read the fund prospectus or Berkshire’s current filings and confirm fees, holdings, trading terms and risk disclosures before placing an order.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling Berkshire a diversified index substitute

Berkshire may own many businesses, but its shareholders still own one company. Treating it as interchangeable with a fund can leave an investor unaware of issuer-specific risk.

Assuming 500 stocks means global diversification

The S&P 500 represents large-cap U.S. equities. It does not automatically provide international, small-company, bond or cash exposure.

Using Berkshire’s historical edge as a forecast

The 1965–2025 figures describe what happened during that period. They do not establish a forward-looking advantage, and they do not account for the exact fund expenses and tracking results an investor will experience.

Ignoring valuation

A company’s quality and an investment’s expected return are different questions. Berkshire’s intrinsic-value concept is relevant because the price paid matters; an index fund also reflects the prices of all its constituents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing on fee alone

A lower expense ratio can help, but benchmark tracking, spread, liquidity, account rules and tax consequences also matter. Compare the complete cost and structure rather than one percentage.

Bottom-line choice

For someone seeking a straightforward core holding for large-cap U.S. stocks, an S&P 500 index fund is generally the more diversified and rules-based option, while still carrying full equity-market risk and U.S. concentration. Berkshire Hathaway is more appropriate only when you deliberately want one-company exposure and accept the additional risks of business execution, capital allocation, succession and valuation. Historical outperformance does not settle the decision; your horizon, risk capacity, existing portfolio and investment purpose do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Berkshire Hathaway an index fund?

No. Berkshire Hathaway stock is ownership in one public company with operating subsidiaries and investments. An S&P 500 fund is a mutual fund or ETF designed to track a benchmark holding hundreds of large U.S. companies.

Can I buy the S&P 500 directly?

No. Investor.gov states that you cannot invest directly in a market index. You buy an ETF or mutual fund that seeks to track it, then accept the fund’s expenses and tracking differences.

Which had the better historical return?

Berkshire’s 2025 shareholder letter reports a 19.7% compounded annual gain in per-share market value from 1965 through 2025, versus 10.5% for the S&P 500 with dividends included. Those are historical, differently labeled measures and are not a forecast.

Is an S&P 500 fund safer than Berkshire?

It is more diversified by issuer, so one company’s failure generally has less impact. It is not safe from broad market losses, and it remains concentrated in U.S. large-cap stocks.

What does the 0.03% VOO fee mean?

Vanguard’s listing displayed a 0.03% expense ratio for VOO on October 13, 2026. The fee is deducted from fund assets. Verify the current listing and prospectus because fees and fund terms can change.

Can I own Berkshire and an S&P 500 fund together?

You can, but owning both does not eliminate concentration. Review overlap, your total U.S. large-cap exposure, time horizon, liquidity needs and tolerance for losses across all accounts.

The Bottom Line

An S&P 500 index fund is the broader, rules-based choice for large-cap U.S. exposure; Berkshire Hathaway is a deliberate single-company investment. Choose based on diversification, risk capacity, valuation, costs, taxes and your ability to stay invested—not on past performance alone.
