Short answer: CRISPR Therapeutics (NASDAQ: CRSP) is the most de-risked choice because its partner Vertex has an approved gene-editing product, CASGEVY, that generated reported revenue in 2025 and 2026. Beam Therapeutics (NASDAQ: BEAM) is the better fit for investors prioritizing a differentiated base-editing platform, several clinical shots on goal and cash visibility into mid-2029. Intellia Therapeutics (NASDAQ: NTLA) offers the most direct in-vivo CRISPR upside, but its investment case carries the greatest near-term clinical and regulatory execution risk after clinical holds on nex-z trials.
Those are portfolio-fit conclusions, not return forecasts. The companies differ more in commercialization, funding, partner economics and regulatory execution than in the appeal of gene editing as a scientific field.

What matters when choosing among BEAM, CRSP and NTLA
A gene-editing stock can look attractive because of a compelling modality, yet still be a difficult portfolio holding if it lacks a funded path through pivotal trials and regulatory review. For these three companies, evaluate six questions in order.

1. Is there evidence of a commercial product?
CRISPR Therapeutics is the only one of the three with a product generating reported revenue in the supplied company updates. CASGEVY revenue was $116 million for full-year 2025, with 64 infusions that year. In the second quarter of 2026, the company reported $76 million of revenue and 78% quarter-over-quarter growth. CASGEVY had approval in 39 countries and U.S. approval for children as young as 2, according to the Q2 2026 update.
Revenue is not the same as profit, and early launches can be uneven. However, an approved therapy gives investors observable evidence about regulatory acceptance, treatment-center execution, manufacturing and payer adoption. Beam and Intellia remain primarily milestone-driven stories in the disclosures available for this comparison.
2. How far are the lead programs from a regulatory decision?
Beam’s February 24, 2026 year-end release said a U.S. biologics license application for risto-cel could be submitted as early as year-end 2026. It also anticipated a U.S. investigational new drug application for BEAM-304 in phenylketonuria during 2026. These are planned filings, not approvals; timing can change and a filing still requires a successful review.
Intellia’s 2025 update described three Phase 3 trials but also disclosed clinical holds on nex-z Phase 3 trials late in 2025. Its Q1 2026 update said patient screening had resumed in MAGNITUDE and MAGNITUDE-2 for nex-z in ATTR-CM and ATTRv-PN. Resumed screening is a constructive operational step, but it is not equivalent to an unrestricted regulatory path or completed enrollment.
CRSP has already crossed the approval threshold with CASGEVY, while its newer programs remain clinical-stage. This creates a barbell: current commercial validation on one side and pipeline uncertainty on the other.
3. What does the modality require the company to prove?
Beam describes its approach as proprietary base editing. In practical portfolio terms, that means investors are underwriting both the therapeutic programs and the claim that the platform can produce precise, clinically useful genetic changes across diseases. Beam’s 2025 results release characterized base editing as a best-in-class technology, but that statement is management’s assessment, not an independent performance ranking.
CRISPR Therapeutics has demonstrated that a CRISPR medicine can reach patients commercially through CASGEVY. The relevant question now is whether the company can reproduce that progress in areas such as cardiovascular, autoimmune, oncology, regenerative medicine and rare diseases. Its Q2 2026 update said Phase 1 trials began for CTX340 in refractory hypertension and CTX460 in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.

Intellia is focused on in-vivo CRISPR medicines, meaning the therapeutic editing is intended to occur inside the patient’s body. That approach could expand the diseases and patient populations reachable by gene editing, but it also concentrates delivery, dose, safety and regulatory execution risk in the clinical program. The holds and subsequent site reactivation work for nex-z are therefore central to the stock thesis, not side issues.
CRISPR Therapeutics: the commercial-validation choice
What investors can measure today
CASGEVY gives CRSP the clearest operating evidence in this group. The company reported $116 million in 2025 revenue and 64 infusions, then $76 million of revenue in Q2 2026, a 78% increase from the prior quarter. Approval in 39 countries and U.S. eligibility down to age 2 broaden the potential treatment population, although the disclosures do not establish how quickly every market will reimburse or how many eligible patients will be treated.
Infusion count is a useful activity indicator, but it should not be read as a forecast. Revenue per infusion can vary with geography, contracting, treatment timing and accounting. The comparison’s value is that CRSP has a real commercial feedback loop while BEAM and NTLA are still seeking comparable evidence.
Vertex partnership economics
Vertex leads global development, manufacturing and commercialization of CASGEVY. Worldwide costs and profits are shared 60/40 with CRISPR Therapeutics under the amended collaboration. This arrangement gives CRSP access to a partner with responsibility for major commercial functions, potentially reducing the burden of building every capability alone.
The trade-off is economic dependence. CRSP does not keep all product economics, and its current revenue visibility is closely linked to one partnered therapy. Investors should track the reported split, launch spending and the pace at which newer wholly owned or partnered programs add to the mix rather than assuming CASGEVY alone defines long-term earnings.
Cash and pipeline breadth
CRSP reported $1,975.8 million in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities at December 31, 2025. That balance is the largest explicitly disclosed liquidity figure among the three companies in the supplied updates. It can help fund trials and operations, but a cash balance is not a promise of profitability; research spending, manufacturing commitments and commercialization costs can materially change the trajectory.
The Q2 2026 update identified Phase 1 starts for CTX340 and CTX460 and described programs across cardiovascular, autoimmune, oncology, regenerative medicine and rare diseases. Breadth creates optionality, yet it also means investors must evaluate many individual readouts instead of treating the platform as a single binary event.

Who may prefer CRSP
- Investors who want existing commercial revenue rather than a purely pre-commercial thesis.
- Portfolios that value a large disclosed cash position and a partner handling global development, manufacturing and commercialization for the lead product.
- Investors comfortable with shared economics and dependence on CASGEVY while the rest of the pipeline matures.
Beam Therapeutics: the platform-and-runway choice
Base editing plus multiple catalysts
Beam’s investment case centers on precision genetic medicines built with proprietary base editing. The company said its 2025 results established positive proof-of-concept data and regulatory and clinical development paths across multiple programs. That language signals progress, but it does not remove the need for successful pivotal data, manufacturing scale-up and regulatory review.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The February 24, 2026 year-end release identified several dated catalysts. Beam anticipated a U.S. IND for BEAM-304 in phenylketonuria during 2026 and said a U.S. BLA submission for risto-cel was expected as early as year-end 2026. An IND allows a clinical program to proceed; a BLA submission begins a review process. Neither event guarantees efficacy, approval or commercial sales.
Pipeline evidence scheduled for 2026
Beam’s investor pipeline page listed initial BEAM-301 Phase 1/2 proof-of-concept data in glycogen storage disease type Ia in October 2026 and updated BEAM-302 Phase 1/2 data in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency in September 2026. Those data points are important because they can show whether the platform is producing clinically meaningful signals in more than one disease. Investors should examine the actual endpoints, follow-up duration, number of participants and adverse events when each update is released rather than relying on the existence of a headline data date.
Funding visibility
Beam announced a strategic financing agreement providing up to $500 million in long-term non-dilutive capital and said expected cash runway extended into mid-2029. “Up to” means the full amount may depend on conditions, milestones or drawdown mechanics; it should not be treated as $500 million of unrestricted cash on hand. Non-dilutive financing can reduce immediate equity dilution, although it may carry obligations, economics or program-specific restrictions that investors need to read in the underlying agreement.
A runway into mid-2029 gives Beam time to generate clinical and regulatory evidence without an immediately stated financing deadline. It does not guarantee that the company reaches approval before needing more capital, especially if trials expand, manufacturing investment rises or milestones slip.

Who may prefer BEAM
- Investors seeking exposure to a differentiated editing modality rather than an already commercial product.
- Portfolios able to tolerate clinical-stage volatility in exchange for several program catalysts.
- Investors who value stated liquidity visibility into mid-2029 and potential non-dilutive funding, while recognizing that future milestones remain decisive.
Intellia Therapeutics: the higher-risk in-vivo upside
Why in-vivo delivery changes the risk profile
Intellia’s focus is in-vivo CRISPR medicines. Its 2025 full-year update described longer-term Phase 1/2 data for lonvo-z and nex-z, three Phase 3 trials and clinical holds on nex-z Phase 3 trials late in 2025. In-vivo programs must establish that the editing system reaches the intended tissue at an effective dose while maintaining an acceptable safety profile. The disclosed holds make regulatory execution a current investment variable, not a distant possibility.
MAGNITUDE and MAGNITUDE-2 status
Intellia said work was underway to reactivate global sites for MAGNITUDE-2 in ATTRv-PN, with enrollment completion expected in the second half of 2026. Its Q1 2026 update then reported resumed patient screening in MAGNITUDE and MAGNITUDE-2 for nex-z in ATTR-CM and ATTRv-PN. Screening resumption demonstrates that operations restarted, but the investment case still depends on enrollment, data quality, regulatory clearance and eventual trial outcomes.

The pipeline page, updated April 27, 2026, lists ongoing clinical trials and additional research programs. The cited disclosures do not provide a current cash balance or runway figure, so a direct liquidity comparison with CRSP and BEAM would be inappropriate without newer financial statements.
Who may prefer NTLA
- Investors specifically seeking in-vivo CRISPR exposure and willing to accept a higher probability of milestone delays.
- Portfolios where a speculative biotechnology position is sized small enough that a clinical setback does not threaten the overall plan.
- Investors prepared to monitor trial reactivation, enrollment completion and regulatory updates closely.

Regulatory and clinical milestones to monitor
- CRSP commercial execution: Track additional CASGEVY infusions, quarterly revenue, country launches and the age range actually treated in each market. The reported 39-country approval footprint is not the same as equivalent access in every country.
- CRSP pipeline: Follow CTX340 in refractory hypertension and CTX460 in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency from their Phase 1 starts, then assess safety, dose selection and evidence of biological activity.
- BEAM filings: Watch whether the anticipated 2026 BEAM-304 IND and the possible risto-cel BLA filing occur, and distinguish a submission from an acceptance, approval or launch.
- BEAM data: Review the October 2026 BEAM-301 and September 2026 BEAM-302 updates for participant numbers, endpoints, durability and adverse events.
- NTLA trial operations: Confirm the status of clinical holds, global-site reactivation and enrollment in MAGNITUDE and MAGNITUDE-2. The expected second-half-2026 enrollment completion is a target, not a guarantee.
- Cash burn: Compare each company’s quarterly operating cash use with its stated balance or runway. A pipeline expansion can shorten runway even when headline financing is substantial.
Risk framework for a personal portfolio
Commercial risk
CRSP has the lowest commercial-stage uncertainty because CASGEVY sales are reported. Beam and Intellia must still demonstrate that clinical success can become reimbursed, repeatable treatment. Even for CRSP, market access, treatment-center capacity and patient identification can limit revenue growth.
Clinical and safety risk
All three companies face clinical risk. CRSP’s approved product reduces, but does not eliminate, uncertainty for its pipeline. Beam’s proof-of-concept results and planned filings are promising milestones rather than guarantees. Intellia’s disclosed nex-z holds elevate the importance of safety and regulator interactions.
Financing and dilution risk
CRSP’s reported $1,975.8 million liquidity provides a substantial disclosed cushion, though spending can be high. Beam’s mid-2029 runway expectation and up-to-$500-million non-dilutive agreement improve visibility, subject to the agreement’s conditions. No comparable NTLA runway figure is established in the cited material, so investors should consult its latest balance sheet before assigning a position size.
Concentration and partner risk
CRSP benefits from Vertex’s infrastructure but shares CASGEVY economics and relies on the partner for global execution. Beam and Intellia may retain more direct control over their programs, yet that can require more internal capital and operational capability. Neither structure is automatically superior; the question is which risk your portfolio can absorb.

| Current revenue and the clearest de-risking | CRSP | CASGEVY is approved broadly and has reported 2025 and 2026 revenue. | Shared economics with Vertex and dependence on a partnered lead product. |
| Platform optionality with several 2026 catalysts | BEAM | Base editing, BEAM-301/302 data and planned BEAM-304 and risto-cel regulatory steps. | Most value remains contingent on future clinical and regulatory success. |
| Maximum in-vivo CRISPR exposure | NTLA | Focused in-vivo programs could offer substantial upside if trials succeed. | Clinical holds, site reactivation and enrollment execution create elevated risk. |
| Lower tolerance for binary biotechnology outcomes | CRSP, if biotechnology exposure is appropriate at all | Commercial evidence and disclosed liquidity provide more observable reference points. | It remains a volatile biotechnology company, not a low-risk holding. |
How to decide without relying on a technology winner
- Set the portfolio role first. Decide whether the position is intended as a speculative satellite, a long-term healthcare allocation or a source of current earnings. A stock cannot be judged apart from that role.
- Choose a maximum loss you can tolerate. Clinical setbacks can cause abrupt repricing. Size BEAM or NTLA so an unfavorable readout does not force you to sell other assets or miss essential financial goals.
- Read the next primary disclosure. For CRSP, that means revenue, infusions and pipeline progress. For BEAM, it means data quality, filings and financing conditions. For NTLA, it means hold status, enrollment and safety information.
- Separate a milestone from an outcome. An IND, BLA submission, trial restart or proof-of-concept update is an event on the path to approval, not approval itself.
- Review liquidity every quarter. Compare cash, marketable securities, operating burn and upcoming trial obligations. Do not use Beam’s “up to” financing amount as if it were unrestricted cash, and do not infer NTLA’s runway from another company’s balance sheet.
- Reassess when the thesis changes. A commercial launch, a new hold, a failed endpoint or a partner renegotiation can alter the correct portfolio fit even if the underlying gene-editing field remains attractive.
Valuation: what this comparison does not establish
No current share prices, market capitalizations or valuation multiples were collected for this comparison. Those figures change daily and should not be inserted from memory. A proper valuation section would need a dated price, share count, cash and debt figures, plus a consistent treatment of partnered-product economics. Without that information, the responsible conclusion is qualitative: CRSP offers the strongest current commercial proof, BEAM offers platform and runway optionality, and NTLA offers higher-risk in-vivo exposure.

Bottom line for portfolio construction
For an investor who puts the greatest weight on evidence that a gene-editing therapy can generate sales, CRSP is the logical starting point. CASGEVY’s $116 million 2025 revenue, $76 million Q2 2026 revenue, 64 reported 2025 infusions and approval in 39 countries create a commercial reference point the other two do not yet have. Vertex’s 60/40 cost-and-profit arrangement reduces some execution burden while limiting CRSP’s share of economics.
BEAM is the more natural choice for an investor willing to wait for clinical and regulatory milestones in exchange for base-editing optionality. The mid-2029 runway expectation and up-to-$500 million non-dilutive financing improve time to execute, but they do not replace positive data or approval.
NTLA belongs in the highest-risk bucket of this comparison. Its in-vivo focus may be attractive to investors who deliberately seek that exposure, yet the nex-z holds and subsequent trial-site reactivation mean regulatory execution must be monitored continuously. A portfolio decision should therefore match risk capacity and evidence preference, not declare one editing technology the universal winner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which of the three gene-editing stocks has commercial revenue?
CRISPR Therapeutics has the clearest reported commercial revenue through CASGEVY, developed with Vertex: $116 million for full-year 2025 and $76 million in Q2 2026. The cited Beam and Intellia updates do not report approved-product revenue.
Is Beam’s $500 million financing already cash on its balance sheet?
No. Beam described a strategic financing agreement providing up to $500 million in long-term non-dilutive capital. “Up to” indicates potential availability under the agreement, not unrestricted cash already received.
What is the main regulatory concern at Intellia?
Intellia disclosed clinical holds on nex-z Phase 3 trials late in 2025. Patient screening resumed in MAGNITUDE and MAGNITUDE-2 in Q1 2026, but hold resolution, enrollment and later trial outcomes remain important uncertainties.
Should current valuation determine the choice?
Yes, but this comparison does not provide valuation figures. Current prices, market capitalization and multiples require a separately dated market-data source; they should not be inferred from the clinical summaries.
