No, India is not facing a nine-day nationwide bank shutdown. October 17–25, 2026 covers nine calendar dates, but only October 18 (Sunday), October 24 (the fourth Saturday) and October 25 (Sunday) are nationwide branch holidays. Festival closures on the other dates depend on the state or city. SBI’s 2026 calendar marks October 20 as “ALL CIRCLES”, while HDFC’s state-wise notice lists closures in many states. Because the window ended on October 25 and the current date is October 26, 2026, this is an archival fact-check unless the headline is updated.
Are banks closed on every date from October 17 to 25, 2026?
No. The “nine days” figure is simply an inclusive count of the dates between October 17 and October 25. Branch closures vary by location: three dates are common weekend holidays, while the remaining dates are regional festival holidays.

Festival names differ because states use local calendars and spellings. A branch in one city can therefore be open while another branch of the same bank is closed.
Is October 20 a holiday for SBI, HDFC and ICICI?
Official bank calendars indicate that October 20 is broadly observed, but the exact branch list should be checked before you travel. SBI’s 2026 calendar labels the date “ALL CIRCLES”, and HDFC’s notice lists October 20 in numerous states. A Business Standard listing instead identifies Gangtok and Imphal, creating a material discrepancy.

Are banks closed on October 24, 2026?
Yes. October 24 is the fourth Saturday, a nationwide bank holiday under the regular second-and-fourth-Saturday rule. The closure applies to scheduled and non-scheduled banks, including SBI, HDFC and ICICI branches. October 25 is also a nationwide holiday because it is a Sunday.

What services still work when a branch is shut?
Branch closure does not normally stop electronic channels. Mint and Business Standard report that customers can continue using net banking, mobile banking, UPI, NEFT, RTGS and ATMs during bank holidays, subject to maintenance windows, transaction limits and service-specific processing rules.
- UPI and mobile banking: payments, transfers and balance checks generally remain available through your bank or UPI application.
- NEFT and RTGS: electronic transfers can be initiated through digital banking, although a technical outage or bank-specific limit may delay completion.
- ATMs: cash withdrawal and other supported functions continue where the machine has cash and is operational.
- Branch-only work: services requiring staff, physical documents, signatures or verification wait until the branch reopens.
Do not assume a digital transaction is instantaneous during maintenance. Keep the transaction reference number and check the account statement before trying again, to avoid duplicate payments.

How should I check whether my local branch is open?
- Identify the exact branch and city, not just the bank’s national brand.
- Compare the branch’s official 2026 holiday calendar with the date and state or city listed above.
- Check the bank’s branch locator or call the branch for October 17–23 festival dates, particularly October 20.
- Complete cash, documentation or in-person requests before a listed closure, and keep digital alternatives ready.
HDFC’s 2026 notice explains that its list is provided for clients and applies differently across states. Government holiday schedules likewise follow the circular issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, so a central list is not a substitute for the branch-level schedule.
Why does October 17–25 produce a “nine-day” alert?
October 2026 contains four Sundays (October 4, 11, 18 and 25) and the second and fourth Saturdays (October 10 and 24). The October 17–25 alert counts nine consecutive calendar dates, not nine universal closures. Business Standard reported up to 11 bank-closure days across the whole month, combining weekends with regional holidays.
