Bank Fixed Deposit vs Corporate Fixed Deposit: Risks, Protection, and What to Check

By TheFinanceBase Team 12 min read

Short answer: A fixed deposit at an insured bank has a defined DICGC backstop of up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per insured bank, including principal and accrued interest. A “corporate FD” does not automatically receive that protection. It may be an NBFC public deposit, a company-law deposit, a housing-finance-company product or another instrument using FD-style marketing. The legal issuer and the contract determine the risk.

Choose between them only after checking insurance, authorization, rating, repayment terms, liquidity and the issuer’s finances. A higher corporate-deposit rate is compensation for taking risks that a bank FD may leave partly or wholly insured—not free extra return.

The practical verdict

For money that must remain highly protected, first use eligible deposits at a DICGC-insured bank and keep the combined balance at that bank within the ₹5 lakh insurance ceiling. That ceiling covers principal and interest together and applies across branches and eligible accounts held in the same right and capacity. It is not ₹5 lakh per FD or per branch.

A corporate fixed deposit can offer a higher rate, but repayment depends on the issuing entity’s liquidity and solvency. NBFC deposits are expressly outside DICGC insurance. RBI supervision, permission to accept deposits and a credit rating can improve transparency and eligibility; none is a government guarantee of repayment.

What “bank FD” and “corporate FD” actually mean

Bank fixed deposit

A bank FD is a term deposit accepted by a licensed bank. You place a lump sum for a chosen tenor, receive interest at the stated frequency or at maturity, and normally receive principal according to the contract. The bank’s insured status matters: only deposits with an insured bank and within DICGC rules receive the insurance backstop.

Deposits in savings, current, recurring and fixed-deposit accounts at the same insured bank are generally combined for the insurance calculation when they are held in the same right and capacity. Accounts at separate branches are not separate insurance buckets. A deposit held individually and one held jointly may be treated differently because the capacity is different, but the applicable ownership rules should be confirmed for the account structure.

Corporate fixed deposit

“Corporate FD” is a marketing label, not one legal category. The issuer could be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • an NBFC accepting public deposits under the permissions and directions applicable to NBFCs;
  • a company accepting deposits under company-law provisions;
  • a housing finance company operating under its own regulatory framework; or
  • another business offering a fixed-return instrument that is not a bank deposit at all.

Before comparing rates, identify the exact legal entity receiving your money, the document you will hold, the regulator’s rules for that product and your claim priority if the issuer fails. Do not infer any of this from an app, distributor or advertisement calling the product an FD.

How protection differs

Check Bank fixed deposit Company or NBFC deposit
Legal issuer Confirm the bank’s legal name and DICGC-insured status. Confirm the exact company name and whether the product is an NBFC public deposit, a company-law deposit or another instrument.
Protection DICGC cover up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per insured bank, including principal and interest, aggregated across branches for the same right and capacity. Do not assume DICGC cover. NBFC deposits are excluded, and RBI does not insure or guarantee their repayment.
Oversight Check the bank and deposit status with official information. Check whether the entity has specific authority to accept this type of public deposit. An NBFC Certificate of Registration alone is not enough.
Credit risk Balances above the insured ceiling remain exposed to the bank’s failure risk; access can also be delayed during resolution. Repayment depends on the company’s ability and willingness to pay. Review accounts, liabilities, cash flows and liquidity.
Rating A rating does not replace checking insurance and the bank’s status. Verify the current deposit-specific rating, outlook, date and rationale. A rating is an opinion, not insurance.
Liquidity Read the premature-withdrawal, penalty and payout clauses. Check lock-in, permitted early repayment, interest reduction and delayed-payment provisions; terms may be stricter than a bank’s.
Return comparison Compare the same tenor, payout frequency, tax treatment and maturity value. Compare the same factors, then decide whether the rate premium compensates for additional credit and liquidity risk.

Is a corporate FD safe?

Safety is conditional, not binary. An issuer with strong capital, stable cash flow, diversified assets and a current high-grade deposit rating may have lower expected credit risk than a weaker issuer. But even a well-rated company can suffer a downgrade, cash-flow shock or delayed repayment. The deposit contract may also give you less flexibility than a bank FD.

Ask what “safe” means for your goal:

  • Capital protection for an emergency reserve: prioritize an insured bank and keep the insured calculation within the limit.
  • Income with a long horizon: a corporate deposit may be considered only after reviewing credit quality, concentration and the consequences of delay.
  • Money needed on a fixed date: avoid a product whose maturity, notice period or early-exit terms could miss that date.

Never describe a corporate FD as safe merely because it is regulated. Regulation can impose eligibility, disclosure and prudential requirements while leaving the investor exposed to loss.

Is a company FD covered by the ₹5 lakh DICGC insurance?

Generally, no. The ₹5 lakh DICGC limit applies to eligible deposits at an insured bank. Deposits mobilized by NBFCs are excluded. A company using the words “fixed deposit” does not become a bank, and a deposit accepted under company law does not inherit bank-deposit insurance.

The ceiling is calculated per depositor, per insured bank, including principal and accrued interest. For example, if you hold ₹3,00,000 in one FD and ₹2,20,000 in another branch of the same bank, the combined ₹5,20,000 is considered against the limit; the excess is not separately insured merely because the deposits or branches differ. Separate insured banks can have separate limits, subject to the applicable ownership and aggregation rules.

Insurance is also not instant access. DICGC describes a claim-settlement framework when an insured bank is placed under All-Inclusive Directions, with timing dependent in part on the bank furnishing accurate depositor data. It is a limited backstop after a triggering event, not a promise that every rupee remains immediately withdrawable during resolution.

Are NBFC fixed deposits insured by RBI?

No. The Reserve Bank of India states: ‘The RBI, however, does not guarantee or offer insurance cover to public deposits of NBFCs.’ RBI rules can govern who may accept deposits, how advertisements are worded and what disclosures are required, but they do not transfer the credit risk to the government.

NBFC advertisements for public deposits must state that ‘the public deposits solicited by it are not insured.’ Treat that sentence as a material warning, not routine legal text.

Permission is a separate question from insurance

Not every NBFC may accept public deposits. Specific authorization is required even where an NBFC holds a general Certificate of Registration. Verify the exact legal entity and its current permission for the particular deposit programme. A distributor’s statement that an NBFC is “RBI registered” does not answer that question.

Company-law deposit takers and housing finance companies may follow distinct permissions and rules. If the issuer is not clearly an NBFC public-deposit taker, obtain the applicable offer document and identify the governing framework before paying.

Why does a corporate FD offer a higher interest rate?

The extra rate generally reflects risks and constraints that a bank FD may not carry to the same extent:

  • Credit risk: the company can default, restructure or delay repayment.
  • Liquidity risk: early withdrawal may be restricted, unavailable or subject to a substantial interest reduction.
  • Funding model: a company may need to pay more to attract deposits than a bank with a broader, cheaper funding base.
  • Insurance difference: an uninsured deposit must compensate investors for bearing potential loss that DICGC would cover only for eligible bank balances within its ceiling.

Compare the premium after tax and after accounting for the possibility of delayed or reduced repayment. A one- or two-percentage-point headline difference may be poor compensation if the money is needed quickly or if the issuer’s financial position deteriorates.

How to check a corporate FD before investing

  1. Identify the legal issuer. Match the name on the application, bank account, offer document and repayment instructions. Record the company’s legal form and registered details; do not rely on a brand or platform name.
  2. Classify the instrument. Determine whether it is an NBFC public deposit, a company-law deposit, a housing finance company deposit or another debt product. Ask what claim you hold if the issuer becomes insolvent.
  3. Verify authority. For an NBFC, confirm specific permission to accept public deposits. A Certificate of Registration by itself does not establish that permission. For other issuers, check the authorization required under the relevant law.
  4. Check insurance wording. Confirm whether the receiving institution is an insured bank. If the document says the deposit is not insured, treat that as a direct statement of your exposure.
  5. Read the current offer document. Locate maturity date, interest rate, compounding, payout schedule, renewal instructions, nomination, repayment method, default clauses and the issuer’s contact for complaints.
  6. Check the deposit-specific rating. Record the agency, rating, outlook, issue date and rationale. Make sure it covers the fixed-deposit programme or the relevant issuer obligation, not a different bond or short-term security. Look for downgrade triggers and confirm the rating is current on the date you invest.
  7. Review audited finances. Examine leverage, asset quality, liquidity, cash-flow generation, maturity mismatches, related-party exposure and contingent liabilities. Read management discussion and auditor qualifications rather than relying on a single profit number.
  8. Test the exit route. Ask whether premature withdrawal is allowed, whether a lock-in applies, how interest is recalculated, what notice is required and what happens if the issuer pays late. Obtain the answer in the contract, not only by telephone.
  9. Calculate concentration. Add this deposit to your other unsecured exposure to the same issuer and sector. A high rate does not justify placing emergency money or an excessive share of savings with one company.
  10. Document the transaction. Save the signed application, deposit receipt, offer document, rating report, payment proof, nominee details and maturity instructions. Set a reminder well before maturity.

Liquidity: can you withdraw an NBFC FD early?

Do not assume that an NBFC FD works like a bank FD. The contract may impose a lock-in, permit withdrawal only after a minimum period, require notice or reduce the interest rate to a lower slab. Some products may not permit early repayment except in specified circumstances.

For eligible individual domestic term deposits of ₹1 crore or less, an RBI direction issued in 2023 requires a premature-withdrawal facility. That requirement does not tell you the rate you will receive, the penalty, the notice process or whether a particular product falls within the definition. Read the product’s own terms and confirm the calculation before investing.

Check whether interest is paid monthly, quarterly, annually or only at maturity; whether it compounds; and whether delayed repayment attracts additional interest. A product with a higher nominal rate can produce less usable cash if it locks funds or pays only at the end.

How to compare returns fairly

Use the same tenor, compounding convention, payout frequency and tax treatment for both products. A simple maturity calculation is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maturity amount = principal × (1 + periodic rate) raised to the number of compounding periods.

For a non-compounding payout, calculate each interest payment separately and add it to principal. Then subtract any applicable tax deducted at source according to your circumstances. A calculator can check arithmetic; it cannot evaluate credit quality, insurance or the probability of delay.

Illustrative comparison

Suppose two products each accept ₹2,00,000 for three years. Product A pays 7% annually and Product B pays 8.5% annually. The higher quoted rate is not an automatic winner: compare whether Product B is insured, whether early exit is allowed, whether interest is compounded or paid out, and whether the issuer’s rating and finances justify the additional exposure. The exact maturity amount depends on the contract’s compounding and payout method.

Do not use an unstated current market rate, a promotional quote or an old rating to make the comparison. Rates, ratings and terms can change, so record the date and edition of every document you use.

Tax, nomination and repayment details to check

The headline interest rate is only one line in the contract. Confirm how interest is reported, when tax may be deducted, whether cumulative interest is accrued until maturity, and how the institution handles a change in tax status. Do not infer a tax threshold from an advertisement; check the current tax rules that apply to you.

What happens if repayment is delayed or the issuer fails?

Insured bank deposit

If an insured bank enters a resolution process covered by DICGC procedures, the insurance claim process applies only within the ₹5 lakh principal-plus-interest ceiling and according to the required depositor data and legal conditions. Amounts above the limit remain exposed to the resolution outcome. You may also face a period in which funds are not immediately accessible.

Corporate or NBFC deposit

There is no DICGC payout for an NBFC public deposit. You must rely on the issuer’s repayment, any applicable resolution or insolvency process and the rights stated in the deposit documents. Recovery can be delayed and may be less than the amount invested. Whether the claim is secured, unsecured, subordinated or otherwise prioritized depends on the specific instrument and law; never assume one status for every corporate deposit.

Common mistakes that increase risk

  • Counting each branch of one bank as a separate ₹5 lakh insurance limit.
  • Assuming “RBI regulated” means “RBI insured.”
  • Accepting an NBFC Certificate of Registration as proof of permission to take public deposits.
  • Using an issuer rating without checking its date, outlook, agency rationale or whether it covers the FD programme.
  • Comparing a corporate FD’s headline rate with a bank FD of a different tenor or payout structure.
  • Ignoring lock-in and premature-withdrawal rules because the money is described as a deposit.
  • Putting emergency funds into an uninsured product that may not repay on demand.
  • Assuming every corporate deposit is secured, or that every one is unsecured, without reading the offer document.
  • Relying on an app, broker or sales representative instead of the issuer’s current documents.

A decision framework for different savers

Choose the bank route when

  • the money is an emergency reserve or needed within a known short period;
  • you cannot tolerate principal loss or a repayment delay;
  • your combined eligible balance can be kept within the DICGC ceiling at each insured bank; or
  • you do not have the time or expertise to analyze an issuer’s accounts and deposit documents.

Consider a corporate deposit only when

  • you have verified the legal category and specific authority to accept deposits;
  • you understand that DICGC insurance does not apply to an NBFC public deposit;
  • the current deposit rating, financial statements and liquidity profile are acceptable to you;
  • the maturity and withdrawal rules match your cash-flow needs; and
  • the rate premium is sufficient compensation for the additional credit, liquidity and concentration risk.

Spread risk deliberately

Keep an emergency reserve separate from yield-seeking money. If you use more than one bank, verify each bank’s insured status and apply the ₹5 lakh calculation separately while respecting the same-right-and-capacity rules. If you use a corporate issuer, set a personal exposure limit based on your ability to absorb a long delay or partial loss, not on the advertised rate.

The questions to put to the issuer

  • What is the exact legal entity receiving my money?
  • Under which law and approval is this deposit accepted?
  • Is the product a public deposit, and is it insured by DICGC?
  • What is the current rating for this fixed-deposit programme, when was it issued and what could trigger a downgrade?
  • What are the maturity date, payout dates, compounding method and renewal instructions?
  • Can I withdraw early, after what minimum period, with what notice and at what interest reduction?
  • What happens if repayment is delayed?
  • Is the claim secured or unsecured, and where is that stated in the offer document?
  • Which audited financial statements and current disclosures should I read?
  • How will principal and interest be paid at maturity, and how do I update nomination details?

If the issuer cannot answer these questions clearly in current written documents, the higher rate is not enough reason to proceed.
