Axis Bank vs HDFC Bank Business Loans (2026): Eligibility, Rates and Documents

Which is better depends on your business profile and the written sanction, not the lowest advertised rate. Axis Bank’s 24×7 business-loan screening page lists at least three years of operation and ₹30 lakh annual turnover. HDFC Bank’s current product page lists three years in the current business and five years’ business experience; its published eligibility brochure states a ₹40 lakh minimum turnover, although that brochure dates from 2013 and must be reconfirmed. Axis publishes separate fixed effective-rate bands for self-employed professionals (SEP) and self-employed non-professionals (SENP). HDFC publishes a broad rack range. Compare the sanctioned APR or IRR, every fee, tenure, repayment amount and any security requirement before choosing.

Axis Bank and HDFC Bank business loans at a glance

The two products can suit established proprietors, professionals, partnerships and companies seeking working capital or business expansion without pledging a property. Public criteria are screening thresholds rather than approval promises. Each bank can apply its own credit policy, price the loan differently after reviewing your file and request additional documents.

Interest rates: what the published numbers really mean

Axis Bank’s SEP and SENP bands

Axis’s 2026 rate grid separates applicants into two categories. Business Loan–SEP carries a fixed effective rate of 10.99% to 16.25%. Business Loan–SENP carries a fixed effective rate of 15% to 25%. The category matters: a professional practice may be assessed under SEP, while a trading, manufacturing or other non-professional enterprise may fall under SENP. Do not apply the SEP minimum to a SENP proposal.

Axis says pricing is based on the business profile, financial assessment, past track record, requested amount and tenure. The grid is therefore a range, not a promise that every eligible applicant receives 10.99% or 15%. Ask for the annualized rate, whether it is described as effective interest, and the repayment schedule attached to your sanction.

HDFC Bank’s wider rack range

HDFC’s 2026 public rack range is 10.75%–22.50% per annum. The bank states that rates vary by profile and can change. A rack rate is a published reference; the rate in your sanction can differ after assessment of bureau history, banking conduct, profitability, leverage, business vintage, requested amount and tenure.

Compare the sanction, not the headline

Two loans with the same nominal rate can have different costs if one has a higher processing charge, stamp duty, insurance, taxes, mandatory add-ons or prepayment restrictions. Request a written key-facts or sanction document from each lender and compare:

  • Annual percentage rate (APR) or internal rate of return (IRR), with the calculation basis.
  • Net amount credited after processing charges, taxes and other deductions.
  • EMI, number of instalments, total repayment and the exact due dates.
  • Processing fee, documentation fee, stamp duty, GST and any insurance charge.
  • Foreclosure and part-prepayment rules, including lock-in periods and percentage charges.
  • Whether the rate is fixed for the full term or can change under the offer’s benchmark terms.
  • Any personal guarantee, collateral, lien or other security condition.

For example, an offer with a slightly higher rate but no large upfront fee may produce a lower APR than a nominally cheaper offer with substantial deductions. Use the net disbursal and total repayment in your calculation rather than comparing only the advertised minimum.

Eligibility: turnover, vintage and profitability

Axis Bank’s published screen

Axis’s 24×7 business-loan page says the business must have operated for at least three years and have turnover of at least ₹30 lakh. The bank’s FAQ states: “No, Axis Bank financing requires that your business be under current ownership for at least 3 years.” That wording is important for a recently purchased business: the age of the industry or company alone may not satisfy the current-ownership test.

Axis’s application captures KYC and officially valid documents, residence and entity information, income-tax returns, financial performance, projections, existing facilities and details of associate concerns. Meeting the turnover and vintage screen does not guarantee approval; the financial and credit assessment still determines the amount, rate and conditions.

HDFC Bank’s current page and older brochure

HDFC’s current product page lists three years in the current business and five years of business experience. Its published eligibility brochure adds a ₹40 lakh minimum turnover, profitability during the previous two years and minimum ITR income of ₹1.5 lakh in Tier 1 and Tier 2 locations or ₹1 lakh in Tier 3 and Tier 4 locations.

Those turnover, profitability and ITR figures come from a 2013 brochure, not the current product page. Treat them as historical published criteria and confirm the current thresholds with HDFC before relying on them, particularly if your business is near a limit or has changed constitution. The current page’s vintage wording and the older brochure’s financial tests may be applied together or differently under current credit policy.

What “eligible” does not establish

  • It does not establish the approved amount. Lenders can limit borrowing based on cash flow, existing obligations and banking conduct.
  • It does not establish the final rate. Rates are profile-based within the published ranges.
  • It does not establish an unsecured approval. A lender may ask for a personal guarantee or other security for a particular proposal.
  • It does not establish processing time. Missing or inconsistent records can cause additional queries.

Documents to prepare for an unsecured business-loan application

Prepare one consistent file before submitting applications. Names, addresses, constitution, turnover and tax figures should match across returns, bank statements, registrations and financial statements.

Identity, address and signature proof

  • Identity proof for the proprietor, partners, directors and authorised signatories.
  • Current address proof for the applicant and the business, as requested by the lender.
  • Signature proof or officially valid documentation required for verification.

Income and banking records

  • Last six months’ business bank statements; HDFC specifically lists six months.
  • Two years of income-tax returns, profit-and-loss statements and balance sheets for HDFC’s published document list.
  • For Axis, ITR/income and financial-performance information, projections and existing-loan details are captured in the application; provide the supporting statements requested during assessment.
  • Details of current loans, credit limits, repayment history and other banking facilities.

Continuity, ownership and constitution

  • Proof showing when the business began and who currently owns it.
  • Registration or licence records that establish business continuity.
  • Partnership deed for a partnership.
  • Memorandum and articles of association and a board resolution for a company, where applicable.
  • Information on associate concerns or related entities if requested in the application.

Udyam Registration for a possible HDFC fee waiver

HDFC states a conditional nil-processing-fee benefit for qualifying micro and small enterprises borrowing up to ₹5 lakh when a Udyam Registration Certificate is submitted before disbursal. Keep the certificate available if you intend to seek that benefit; eligibility and documentation conditions still apply, and the benefit is not a general waiver for every business loan.

Fees, prepayment and tenure differences

HDFC’s published charges and concessions

HDFC lists a processing charge of up to 2%. The exact rupee amount, taxes and any other deductions should appear in the sanction or fee schedule. HDFC also publishes prepayment rules and a conditional nil premature-closure charge for fixed-rate MSE loans up to ₹50 lakh. Confirm that your business, loan amount, rate type and closure method meet every condition before assuming the charge is zero.

The current HDFC unsecured product page states a 12–48 month tenure. A shorter term raises the EMI but reduces the period over which interest accrues; a longer term lowers the EMI but can increase total repayment. Match the term to the cash-flow life of the asset or working-capital cycle rather than selecting solely on the smallest EMI.

Axis’s offer-specific economics

The supplied Axis rate material does not establish one universal processing fee, tenure or prepayment schedule. Ask Axis for a written statement of processing, stamp-duty, documentation, insurance, foreclosure and part-prepayment charges, along with the exact tenure and EMI. The bank’s individualized pricing means these details can materially change the cost of an offer that appears attractive from the rate grid alone.

How to compare the two offers step by step

  1. Check the vintage and turnover gate. For Axis, test three years under current ownership and ₹30 lakh turnover. For HDFC, test the current page’s three-year current-business and five-year-experience criteria, then verify whether the older brochure’s ₹40 lakh, profitability and ITR thresholds are still in force.
  2. Classify the application correctly. Determine whether Axis will assess you as SEP or SENP. Misclassifying the category can make a published rate comparison meaningless.
  3. Assemble a matched document pack. Submit the same recent statements, returns and entity records to both lenders so that differences reflect underwriting rather than missing information.
  4. Request written quotations. Obtain sanctioned amount, net disbursal, rate type, APR/IRR, tenure, EMI, fees, taxes, security and prepayment terms in writing.
  5. Calculate total cost. Add all upfront deductions to scheduled repayments and subtract no value for a waiver unless its conditions are documented.
  6. Stress-test the EMI. Model a weak-sales month, delayed receivables and existing-loan EMIs. A lower rate is not useful if the repayment schedule strains operating cash.
  7. Verify security and guarantees. Confirm whether “unsecured” means no asset collateral while still requiring a personal guarantee or other undertaking.
  8. Reconfirm volatile terms immediately before signing. Rates, fees, waivers and benchmark-linked terms can change. The sanction letter, not an older webpage, controls your transaction.

Which lender may fit which applicant?

Axis may fit when the Axis screen matches your profile

An established business with at least ₹30 lakh turnover and three years under current ownership may clear Axis’s stated 24×7 screen. Professionals should pay attention to the SEP band, while non-professionals should evaluate the separate SENP band. The decision still depends on the individualized offer and complete cost schedule.

HDFC may fit when its current and confirmed criteria are met

A borrower with three years in the current business, five years’ overall experience and the documentation HDFC requests may fit its current product. A qualifying micro or small enterprise borrowing up to ₹5 lakh could also investigate the conditional nil-processing-fee provision by submitting Udyam registration before disbursal. Confirm the older brochure’s thresholds and all waiver conditions first.

When neither published page is enough

If turnover is below a stated screen, current ownership is under three years, profitability is weak or records are incomplete, do not infer a likely approval from a headline rate. Ask the lender whether another product or a different structure is available, and obtain the applicable criteria in writing. The supplied public information contains no comparative approval-rate statistic, so no lender can be declared more likely to approve on that basis.

Common application problems and how to prevent them

Business age is counted differently

A registration date, first invoice date and current-owner acquisition date may differ. Keep documents that establish each date and ask which one the lender will use. Axis expressly refers to current ownership, so a takeover can reset the relevant clock for that product.

Turnover does not reconcile

Declared turnover, GST or sales records and bank credits may not match because of timing, cash sales, refunds or transfers between related accounts. Reconcile the figures before applying and explain legitimate differences with supporting records.

Statements show irregular banking

Frequent cheque returns, unexplained transfers or heavy use of overdraft limits can trigger questions even when revenue is high. Submit all requested accounts and a clear explanation rather than omitting a facility.

Old eligibility information is treated as current

HDFC’s ₹40 lakh turnover, two-year profitability and location-based ITR figures are from a 2013 brochure. They may have changed. Confirm them directly before making a borrowing decision, and record the date and channel of confirmation.

“Unsecured” is misunderstood

Unsecured generally refers to no specified asset pledged, but the lender can still require a personal guarantee, undertakings or other conditions. Read the sanction and loan agreement for every obligation.

Questions to ask before accepting a sanction

  • What is the exact annual rate and APR or IRR on the amount I will actually receive?
  • Is the rate fixed for the full tenure, and can any benchmark or policy change affect it?
  • What is deducted before disbursal, including processing fee, GST, stamp duty, insurance and documentation charges?
  • What is the total repayment and EMI schedule?
  • Can I part-prepay, and what are the lock-in and percentage charges?
  • Does the offer require a personal guarantee, collateral, lien or insurance?
  • Which eligibility criteria and waiver conditions are being applied, and are they confirmed as current?
  • What documents remain outstanding, and when will disbursal occur after they are supplied?

Bottom-line decision rule

Choose the offer that your business can comfortably service after comparing net disbursal, APR/IRR, total repayment, all fees, tenure and exit charges. Axis has the lower published maximum for SEP than for SENP and a ₹30 lakh turnover screen, while HDFC shows a broad 10.75%–22.50% rack range, a current 12–48 month unsecured tenure and processing charges up to 2%. Those figures do not identify a universal winner. Your current-ownership history, business experience, profitability, banking records, documentation and the final written sanction determine which loan is genuinely better.

Confirm rates, fees, eligibility thresholds, waivers and prepayment terms with the bank at the time of application; the published figures cited here are dated 2026 unless specifically identified as the older 2013 HDFC brochure.
