AST SpaceMobile is the more ambitious broadband design. Its next-generation BlueBird satellites are intended to connect directly to normal mobile phones for voice calls, video calls, messaging, streaming and downloads. AST reports a May 2026 speed test of 98.9 Mbps and says future BlueBird satellites are designed for peak rates above 150 Mbps per coverage cell. Those are a company-reported test and design targets, not an independent comparison with today’s consumer Starlink phone service. AST’s public materials do not yet establish one universal retail plan or a country-by-country launch schedule.

How the two systems work
AST SpaceMobile: a cellular broadband network in orbit
AST SpaceMobile combines spectrum supplied by mobile-network operators with spectrum it holds itself. The company’s planned BlueBird satellites are designed to act as very large cellular nodes, allowing a compatible phone to connect automatically when it is outside terrestrial tower range. The intended service is ordinary cellular broadband: voice, video calls, messaging, streaming and file downloads without a special satellite handset or dish.
AST describes launches during 2025 and 2026 and a next-generation network with more than 2,000 coverage cells. The Federal Communications Commission has recorded AST’s request for authorization for a planned 248-satellite system, as well as spectrum proceedings involving AST and AT&T. These filings and roadmap statements show the architecture and regulatory work, but they do not constitute a single, globally available consumer service.
Starlink Direct to Cell: an eNodeB on a Starlink satellite
Starlink Direct to Cell places an eNodeB modem on Starlink satellites. An eNodeB is the radio equipment used by a conventional 4G LTE cellular base station, so the satellite can integrate with a partner mobile network rather than requiring a separate satellite-phone network. Starlink says compatible off-the-shelf cellular modems need no specialized user hardware.

A supported phone can switch to the satellite connection automatically when no terrestrial or roaming network is available, provided satellite coverage and sky visibility are sufficient. Starlink Mobile materials describe an expanding capability aimed eventually at full cellular coverage and 5G-like smartphone use, but the features available to a customer depend on the carrier implementation, country, device and date.

Coverage: current maps versus planned reach
Where T-Satellite works today
T-Mobile’s support documentation lists the Continental U.S., Puerto Rico, Hawaii and parts of southern Alaska for T-Satellite. It also identifies international partner coverage in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Coverage is not a guarantee of a connection at every outdoor location: terrain, trees, buildings, aircraft, cruise ships, network traffic and local regulation can block or reduce service.

The phone normally attempts the terrestrial or roaming network first. When those options are unavailable, it can select the satellite service automatically if the account, handset and location are eligible. A status indicator or on-screen message may take time to appear while the phone searches, especially under heavy obstruction or at low satellite elevation.
AST’s coverage is tied to constellation deployment
AST’s stated objective is a broad cellular footprint, but its practical coverage grows as satellites launch, activate and receive permission to use the necessary spectrum. The company’s 2025–2026 launch material and BlueBird design target describe future capacity rather than a single current map that applies to every phone user.
The FCC record of a proposed 248-satellite system and the AST/AT&T spectrum proceedings are important because satellite count, orbital authorization and spectrum rights affect where service can operate. Until a mobile-network partner announces a commercial launch in a particular country, treat AST coverage there as planned rather than available.
Why a coverage map can overstate real-world access
- Sky view: A phone needs enough unobstructed sky to acquire and maintain a satellite. Dense forest, canyon walls, urban buildings and indoor locations can prevent a session.
- Satellite elevation: A low-angle satellite may be technically within a footprint but difficult to reach from a particular valley, street or shoreline.
- Capacity: Many users sharing one satellite or cell can experience slower data or delayed message delivery.
- Regulation: A satellite may pass overhead while a service remains unavailable because local authorities have not authorized the relevant spectrum or carrier arrangement.
- Moving platforms: Aircraft and cruise ships have additional antenna, safety and regulatory constraints; a land coverage map does not promise service onboard.
Speed and what you can actually do
AST’s published broadband figures
AST’s official FAQ records a “May 2026: speed test (98.9 Mbps).” That is a company-reported result, not an independent laboratory benchmark and not a guaranteed rate for every user. AST also says next-generation BlueBird satellites are designed for peak speeds above 150 Mbps per coverage cell. A peak per cell is a capacity target shared by users in that cell, not a promise that one phone will download at that rate.
If deployed as described, that level of capacity could support ordinary voice and video calls, social-media uploads, larger downloads and some streaming. Actual performance would still vary with handset radio support, partner spectrum, satellite elevation, cell loading and regulatory limits.

T-Satellite’s current low-bandwidth profile
T-Mobile characterizes T-Satellite as limited-speed satellite data optimized for selected apps. Its support documentation states: “This isn’t high speed data, but it’s built for what matters most off grid.” The service supports text, location sharing, picture and audio messaging, emergency text and a selected set of low-bandwidth applications. App behavior may differ from the same app on a terrestrial connection, and a message can take longer when the phone is searching for a satellite or the network is busy.
T-Mobile does not publish a throughput figure in the cited service material that can be compared directly with AST’s 98.9 Mbps report. It would therefore be misleading to declare a universal speed winner. AST has a reported test and future design peaks; T-Satellite has a currently documented feature set without an equivalent public benchmark.
Streaming, calls and downloads
- Normal voice calls: AST lists voice as an intended capability, but a reader needs a live carrier launch and compatible device before assuming it is available. T-Satellite’s currently documented emphasis is messaging and selected data functions rather than general high-speed calling.
- Video calls: AST includes video calls in its stated target use cases. T-Satellite’s limited-speed profile should not be treated as a reliable video-call connection.
- Streaming video: AST’s broadband design may support streaming where capacity and regulation permit. T-Satellite is not presented as high-speed data, so streaming is not a sensible assumption.
- Photos and audio: T-Satellite supports picture and audio messaging, but transfers can be slower or fail when the sky view is poor.
- Emergency communication: T-Satellite supports emergency text. Satellite availability, battery level, sky visibility and network conditions still matter, so a satellite indicator is not a promise that every emergency message will be delivered immediately.
Phone compatibility and setup
Do you need a satellite phone, dish or special modem?
No dedicated satellite phone or dish is required for either model as described. AST is designed around existing mobile devices using partner spectrum. Starlink’s Direct to Cell business material says compatible off-the-shelf cellular modems need no specialized hardware, and T-Satellite is accessed through an eligible smartphone and carrier account.
That does not mean every phone works. The radio bands, modem firmware, operating-system support, carrier provisioning and account plan determine which satellite features appear.
Checking a phone for T-Satellite
- Open T-Mobile’s T-Satellite support page and use its IMEI or device checker.
- Confirm that the exact model and storage or regional variant shown by the checker match the phone you own; a similar model name is not enough.
- Check the account plan and add-on status. Some plans include T-Satellite, while other eligible customers can add it for $10 per month.
- Install required operating-system and carrier updates before testing. T-Mobile notes that some phones support messaging but not all satellite-data features.
- Test outdoors with a broad view of the sky. A building, heavy canopy or canyon can make a compatible phone appear not to work.
What the Pixel 10 announcement means
In an August 20, 2025 newsroom announcement, T-Mobile identified Pixel 10 as satellite-data-ready at launch. Other devices could initially support messaging and location sharing depending on the phone’s operating-system readiness. The announcement is a device example, not a blanket statement that every Android or iPhone model has the same capabilities.

For AST, there is no single public compatibility list that applies across all markets because the commercial service depends on the mobile-network partner, spectrum and launch date. A phone that is technically capable of cellular satellite reception may still need carrier software or account authorization.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pricing, enrollment and availability decisions
T-Satellite pricing
T-Mobile says T-Satellite is included with certain plans. Other customers can add it for $10 per month, subject to the plan’s terms and device eligibility. The price is for the carrier service; it is not a separate Starlink dish or satellite-phone purchase. Check the current plan description before enrolling because included features, taxes, eligibility and international use can change.
AST’s purchase path
AST’s public materials cited for this comparison do not provide one universal consumer subscription, a standard monthly price or a country-by-country retail list. The practical purchase path is therefore through a mobile-network partner when that partner announces service in the reader’s market. Until then, statements about planned satellites or coverage should not be read as an invitation to sign up directly with AST.
What to compare before paying
- Country and region: Verify that the service is authorized where you will use it, including international partner arrangements.
- Exact phone: Use an IMEI checker or the carrier’s model list rather than relying on a brand or operating-system label.
- Included features: Distinguish emergency text and messaging from general data, voice, video or streaming.
- Billing: Confirm whether satellite access is included, an add-on, promotional, or subject to a separate roaming rule.
- Automatic selection: Understand when the phone leaves terrestrial service and how it signals satellite mode.
- Outdoor use: Decide whether your locations normally provide an unobstructed sky view; a plan cannot overcome a physical obstruction.
Common failure modes and fixes
The phone never shows a satellite connection
Move outside, away from buildings and dense tree cover, and hold the phone with the broadest possible sky view. Give the device time to search. Verify the account, IMEI eligibility, software updates and local coverage before assuming the hardware is defective.

Messaging support can exist without full satellite-data support. Check the model-specific feature list, reduce the attachment size and wait for a clearer sky view. T-Satellite’s limited-speed design means a photo or audio clip may take substantially longer than on a terrestrial network.

Service works in one place but not another
Compare obstructions, terrain, satellite elevation and local regulation. A service area on a map does not guarantee access inside a building, beneath a canopy, in a canyon or on a moving vessel.
A speed test is far below the advertised figure
AST’s 98.9 Mbps result was a company-reported test, while the “above 150 Mbps per coverage cell” figure is a design peak. Neither is a guaranteed per-phone rate. Cell loading, spectrum, handset configuration and satellite geometry can produce lower results. T-Satellite does not publish a matching high-speed benchmark and should be evaluated by its supported tasks rather than by AST’s targets.
Which service fits which need?
Choose current Starlink Direct to Cell service when
- You need a product you can enroll in through a carrier now.
- Your priority is texting, location sharing, emergency messages and occasional low-bandwidth app use outside tower coverage.
- You use a recent phone that passes the carrier’s IMEI checker and live in a listed coverage area.
- You can work within limited speed and understand that trees, buildings and terrain may interrupt service.
Watch AST SpaceMobile when
- You need the possibility of ordinary cellular broadband, including voice, video, streaming and larger downloads.
- You are willing to wait for a launch and mobile-network partner in your country.
- You want to follow announcements about BlueBird deployment, spectrum authorization and device provisioning rather than buy a generic satellite accessory.
AST’s design is potentially more capable, but its consumer availability is less certain. T-Satellite is less ambitious in its currently documented data profile, but it is the option with a defined carrier enrollment path today.
What to monitor as the market changes
Satellite-to-phone services can change quickly as launches, spectrum decisions and carrier agreements progress. For AST, the meaningful milestones are operational BlueBird satellites, authorization to use spectrum in a target country, a named mobile-network partner and a published customer plan with a supported-device list. For Starlink Direct to Cell, watch carrier announcements that add countries, phones, applications or higher-bandwidth features.
When comparing a new claim, identify whether it is a coverage map, a design target, a company test or a live retail feature. Keep the date and geography attached to the number: a 2026 speed test, a planned per-cell peak and a current U.S. carrier feature are different kinds of evidence.
