ASML reported record third-quarter 2026 net sales of €11.662 billion—roughly the $13 billion figure used in dollar-based headlines—and €4.960 billion in net income. The Dutch lithography supplier said semiconductor customers are increasing equipment forecasts because they expect AI investment to remain large and long-lived, leaving ASML’s currently planned 2027 and 2028 output short of expected demand.

| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Total net sales | €11.662 billion | €9.326 billion |
| Gross profit | €6.700 billion | Not stated in the release |
| Gross margin | 57.5% | 54.0% |
| Net income | €4.960 billion | €2.918 billion |
| New lithography systems sold | 113 | 86 |
| Used lithography systems sold | 8 | 5 |
| Installed Base Management sales | €3.289 billion | Not stated in the release |
The €11.7 billion figure is a rounded presentation of the company’s €11.662 billion result. Calling it $13 billion is a rounded-dollar framing, not a separate U.S.-dollar reporting figure; ASML reports its accounts in euros.

Why the quarter was a record
AI investment is lifting customers’ forecasts
ASML President and Chief Executive Officer Christophe Fouquet said customers are increasing their short- and medium-term equipment forecasts primarily because of their assessment of the “size and duration” of AI-related investment. Some customers are already discussing orders for 2029 and 2030. That matters because it points to a multiyear build-out of semiconductor manufacturing capacity rather than a one-quarter inventory adjustment.
#1 Best Overall
More systems shipped, with strong execution
ASML sold 113 new lithography systems in Q3, up from 86 in Q2, and eight used systems, up from five. Fouquet attributed the record sales to strong execution during the company’s ramp-up. Lithography systems use hardware, software and services to mass-produce the integrated-circuit patterns that become chips, so each shipment represents a major piece of factory capacity rather than a consumer product sale.
Service and upgrade demand added to equipment revenue
Installed Base Management sales reached €3.289 billion, above the company’s guidance. This business includes productivity upgrades for machines already operating in chip factories. ASML says those upgrades can increase wafer capacity without requiring every additional wafer to come from a newly delivered system.

Is AI causing a shortage of lithography machines?
ASML’s statement describes a projected supply-demand gap, not an empty-market shortage that can be solved immediately by buying a machine. The company says supply currently planned for both 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet customers’ demand. Rising forecasts, increasing order-book momentum and interest extending into 2029 and 2030 are driving that assessment.

For chipmakers, the constraint is access to specialized industrial equipment and the time required to manufacture, install and qualify it. For investors, the important distinction is that demand visibility is improving while physical capacity remains the limiting factor. ASML did not publish a complete industry-wide shortage estimate or a competitor comparison in this release.

Why ASML is investigating more capacity for 2028
ASML had previously communicated a 30% increase in 2027 capacity for low-NA extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and deep ultraviolet (DUV) immersion systems, while investigating a further 30% increase for 2028. Because customer forecasts have strengthened, the company is now examining ways to expand 2028 capacity beyond that previously communicated plan.
What “capacity expansion” can mean
- More new-system output: additional manufacturing and supplier capacity could allow more lithography tools to be delivered.
- Productivity upgrades: improving the output of machines already installed can add wafer capacity without a one-for-one increase in new tools.
- Longer planning horizons: customer interest in 2029 and 2030 gives ASML a basis for evaluating investments that would be difficult to justify on one quarter’s orders alone.
The announcement is an investigation, not a promise that a specific expansion has been approved or that all demand will be fulfilled. Capacity decisions also require coordination across ASML’s own operations and its specialized supplier network.

What ASML’s 2026 outlook means
| Period | Sales guidance | Gross-margin guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Q4 2026 | €14.2–15.2 billion | Approximately 57% |
| Full year 2026 | €44–45 billion | Approximately 56% |
The Q4 range is above the Q3 result on a quarterly basis and reflects the company’s expectation that strong demand and ramp-up execution will continue. The full-year range is guidance, not reported revenue, and the margin figure is an approximate year-level target rather than a guarantee for each quarter.

AI accelerators, high-performance processors and the memory used alongside them are manufactured through repeated patterning steps. ASML supplies the lithography equipment, software and services that chipmakers use in those manufacturing lines. Its position therefore links the company to customers’ plans for logic and memory capacity, even though ASML does not sell AI chips itself.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
ASML is headquartered in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, employs more than 45,500 people and trades on Euronext Amsterdam and Nasdaq under the symbol ASML. Its revenue is generated from industrial capital equipment, systems already in the installed base and related services—not from consumer electronics sales.
What investors should watch next
- Conversion of forecasts into orders: customer interest for 2029 and 2030 is an encouraging signal, but forecasts must become firm orders and deliveries.
- Execution of the ramp-up: the latest quarter benefited from strong execution; delays in production, installation or customer qualification could change the timing of revenue.
- 2028 investment decisions: the company is investigating capacity beyond its earlier plan, but the size, cost and timing of any additional expansion have not been specified.
- Installed-base productivity: upgrades provide another route to wafer capacity and can affect the mix between new-system sales and service revenue.
- Industry and policy conditions: semiconductor cycles, customer capital budgets and geographic or export restrictions can affect when equipment may be shipped, none of which is quantified in this release.
The central message is a demand-and-capacity mismatch: AI-related investment is extending customers’ planning horizons, while ASML says its already planned output for 2027 and 2028 is not enough. The record Q3 figures show that demand is translating into current revenue, and the 2026 outlook indicates management expects momentum to continue.
