Sometimes—but only when the route actually provides the protection it claims and the swap is large or price-sensitive enough to justify extra fees and execution trade-offs. A private Solana route can reduce a sandwich attacker’s opportunity to see and reorder your swap. It cannot eliminate MEV, guarantee a better fill, or protect transactions that bypass the relevant block engine.
For most users, the practical order is: set a sensible slippage limit, confirm what your wallet or app’s “private” or “MEV protection” setting actually does, and then decide whether the added tip, priority fee, latency, and failure risk are worthwhile.

What MEV means for a Solana swap
Maximal extractable value (MEV) is the value a block producer or searcher can obtain by choosing, inserting, or reordering transactions. Not every form of MEV harms the trader. Solana’s documentation distinguishes atomic arbitrage, which can correct price differences between decentralized exchanges, from harmful extraction such as sandwiching that worsens a user’s execution. The relevant question is therefore not “Can private routing stop all MEV?” but “How much harmful ordering risk does this route reduce, and what does it cost?”

How a sandwich attack works
In a sandwich, a searcher detects a pending swap, buys the asset before the user’s transaction, allows the user’s trade to move the price at a worse rate, and sells after the trade. The searcher captures part of the price impact that the user would otherwise have avoided. A tight slippage limit can cause the victim transaction to fail rather than accept a very bad price, but it does not prevent every ordering strategy.

Why Solana’s flow is different from a shared public mempool
Solana does not use a shared public mempool in the ordinary sense described in the Solana Foundation’s guide. Transactions are forwarded toward the upcoming block leader, and unprocessed transactions expire after roughly 150 blocks (about one minute). That shorter observation window can reduce the time available to searchers, but it is not a privacy guarantee. Searchers with fast infrastructure or direct connections to validators can still observe transaction flow.
The implementation description and the security outcome are different things: “not sitting in one universal public queue” does not mean “invisible.” You should treat ordinary Solana submission as lower-exposure than a long-lived public mempool, not as protection from MEV.
What a private transaction service actually changes
A private service generally changes where a signed transaction is sent and which intermediary first handles it. The meaningful question is whether it submits through a block engine with a defined ordering rule, rather than merely forwarding to another RPC endpoint that uses the word “private.”
Jito’s DontFront rule
Jito’s block engine supports a specific mechanism called DontFront. A transaction carries a valid public key beginning with jitodontfront as a read-only, non-signer account in one of its instructions. The address does not need to exist on chain. When the Jito block engine sees that marker, it requires the transaction to be first in the bundle. The Solana Foundation documents the mechanism at MEV Protection with Jito DontFront.

For bundles containing more than one DontFront transaction, those transactions must be contiguous and share a signer with the first DontFront transaction. These are ordering constraints enforced by the Jito block engine—not by Solana consensus and not by every validator or relay.
The boundary of that protection
DontFront applies when the transaction reaches the Jito block engine. If someone submits directly to a validator or uses a different path, the Jito rule is outside that path’s protection. Jito’s own documentation warns: “This feature may help reduce sandwich attacks but is not guaranteed to do so and is not a solution for all variations in transaction ordering, including any ordering conducted by third parties.” Read the full implementation and sending details in Jito’s Low Latency Transaction Send documentation.
Consequently, “Jito-protected” should mean that the transaction was sent through the relevant Jito path with the required marker or service behavior. It should not be interpreted as “the transaction cannot be seen,” “the swap cannot be sandwiched,” or “all MEV disappears.”

| Route | Does it use the relevant block engine? | Risk it may address | Guarantee limits | Added fees | Landing and failure behavior | User slippage control |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary RPC submission | No Jito submission is established by the route itself. | It may benefit from Solana’s short forwarding window, but it does not add a defined anti-sandwich ordering rule. | No special MEV guarantee. | Normal network fees; no private tip is established. | Depends on the RPC and current leader; unprocessed transactions expire after roughly 150 blocks (about one minute). | Set by the wallet or application and the swap instruction. |
| Wallet or app “private” route | Depends on the provider. Verify whether the transaction is sent through Jito or another named engine. | Potentially reduced exposure to the provider’s stated threat model, if the path is real and available for that transaction. | The provider’s wording controls; do not infer a universal guarantee from “private” or “MEV protection.” | May add a tip, priority fee, or service charge; a universal amount is not established. | Could land faster, slower, or fail more often than a public route depending on leader coverage and congestion. Ask how retries work. | Usually remains under the wallet or app’s slippage setting; check whether the service changes it. |
| Direct Jito integration | Yes, when sent through Jito’s documented block-engine path. | DontFront can constrain ordering for marked transactions in Jito bundles and may reduce sandwich opportunities on that path. | Block-engine-specific; it does not cover direct-validator or third-party ordering. | Bundle tips and normal priority fees may apply. Jito documents a 1,000-lamport minimum bundle tip, which may be insufficient during high demand. | Jito’s sendTransaction forwards directly to a validator and provides MEV protection by default, but sets skip_preflight=true. Bundles require careful simulation and verification. |
The application still chooses the swap’s slippage tolerance; routing does not replace that control. |
Official documentation explains the mechanisms and limitations, but it does not provide an independent, universal cost-benefit benchmark for retail swaps. A route can therefore be technically valid yet uneconomic for a small trade.
Fees and execution trade-offs
Tips are bids, not insurance
Jito documents a 1,000-lamport minimum tip for bundles. That is a minimum accepted value in the documented system, not a promise that a bundle will land and not a universal “best” tip. Jito warns that the minimum may be insufficient during periods of high demand. Tips also do not prioritize transactions for leaders that are not running the Jito-Solana path. The actual opportunity cost depends on congestion, the leader schedule, bundle competition, and the value at risk in your swap.
Do not describe a tip as a fee that buys guaranteed protection. It is an additional payment associated with attempting to get a bundle accepted on a particular path. You may also pay a Solana priority fee, which is a separate mechanism for influencing processing priority. A private route can therefore cost more without improving execution if the transaction is sent to a leader or relay that does not honor the relevant mechanism.
Speed and failed transactions
Low-latency delivery can help a transaction reach the intended leader quickly, but speed is not the same as a better fill. A route may fail to land when its supported leaders are unavailable, when a bundle loses an auction, or when the swap’s slippage condition is no longer satisfied. Confirm whether the service retries through another path, because a fallback can change the very protection you selected.

Jito’s documented sendTransaction method skips preflight simulation by setting skip_preflight=true. That can reduce delay, but it also means the RPC does not simulate the transaction before forwarding it. Developers should simulate and verify transactions themselves, particularly when constructing bundles; users should understand that a fast submission can still fail because of a stale blockhash, insufficient funds, an invalid account state, or a slippage limit.
Slippage remains your first line of defense
Slippage tolerance specifies how much worse an execution price you will accept before the swap fails. A private route does not make a loose slippage setting safe. Excessively tight slippage can cause legitimate trades to fail during normal price movement; excessively loose slippage gives an attacker more room to worsen execution. Set it according to the token’s liquidity, volatility, trade size, and the application’s actual quote—not according to a marketing promise about privacy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When private routing is likely to be worthwhile
A large or price-sensitive swap
For a trade whose expected sandwich loss could exceed the extra tip, priority fee, or service charge, a confirmed protected path can be rational. This is especially true when the pool is shallow, the trade is large relative to available liquidity, or the quote shows substantial price impact. Compare the amount at risk with the complete incremental cost, not just the advertised minimum tip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA routine, small swap
For a small, liquid swap, the additional cost and a failed or delayed transaction may outweigh the likely benefit. A well-chosen slippage limit and a reputable ordinary route may be sufficient. That is a conditional judgment, not a claim that small trades cannot be attacked.

A transaction that must not leak before execution
Some users care about reducing information leakage even when they cannot estimate a sandwich loss precisely. In that case, use a route only after confirming where it sends the transaction, which leaders it covers, what happens on fallback, and whether the service changes the transaction or slippage settings. If those answers are unavailable, the word “private” does not provide a reliable basis for paying more.
Developer implementation: using DontFront correctly
The Solana Foundation’s cookbook describes DontFront as a Jito block-engine feature for mainnet and testnet, not a standard RPC feature. A developer integrating it should treat the submission path and transaction construction as one design, rather than adding a marker and continuing to use an unrelated endpoint.
- Add the marker account. Include a valid public key beginning with
jitodontfrontas a read-only, non-signer account in an instruction. The documented address need not exist on chain. - Construct and sign the transaction. Preserve the marker account when compiling the message and ensure the resulting transaction is the one you intend to send; changing the message after signing invalidates the signature.
- Submit through Jito’s block engine. Use the documented JSON-RPC or gRPC low-latency submission path rather than a normal RPC endpoint. The cookbook’s instructions are at How to Protect Transactions from MEV with Jito.
- Handle bundles deliberately. In a bundle, DontFront transactions must be at the front. If there are multiple DontFront transactions, keep them contiguous and make them share a signer with the first DontFront transaction.
- Simulate and verify. Because the low-latency
sendTransactionmethod setsskip_preflight=true, perform your own simulation and validation. For bundles, verify account state, blockhash freshness, compute requirements, tip instructions, and the expected post-trade balances before sending. - Monitor the result and fallback. Record whether the transaction was accepted, landed, expired, or failed. A fallback to a direct validator submission may improve inclusion odds but is no longer covered by Jito’s DontFront rule.
What users should check before enabling a “private” toggle
- Destination: Does the app name the block engine or endpoint receiving the signed transaction?
- Scope: Does protection apply to this chain, network, swap type, and current leader, or only to selected transactions?
- Ordering rule: Is there a concrete mechanism such as DontFront, or only a general statement that the route is private?
- Fallback: If the protected path is unavailable, does the app send publicly, retry later, or fail?
- Costs: Which amount is a normal network fee, which is a priority fee, and which is a bundle or service tip? Are the values variable?
- Slippage: Can you set the tolerance yourself, and does the service ever widen it?
- Results: Can you see the final route, execution price, priority settings, and whether the transaction landed through the protected path?
Common misconceptions and failure cases
“Private” means invisible
It does not. The transaction can still be observed by infrastructure operators, the block engine, validators, or third parties with access to the flow. Privacy here means reducing exposure to a particular public or searcher path, not hiding transaction details from everyone.
DontFront is a network-wide Solana rule
It is not. DontFront is enforced by the Jito block engine. A direct-validator submission or another relay is outside that feature’s scope.
The minimum tip guarantees inclusion
It does not. The documented 1,000-lamport minimum may be inadequate when demand is high, and tips do not prioritize transactions for non-Jito-Solana leaders.
A protected transaction cannot lose money to MEV
It can still suffer from ordinary price movement, liquidity changes, failed execution, stale quotes, other ordering conducted by third parties, or an application that falls back to an unprotected path. Protection should be evaluated as risk reduction, not as an insurance policy.
Bottom line
A private Solana transaction service is worth considering when you can verify the protected submission path and the potential cost of sandwiching is greater than the added fees and execution trade-offs. Jito’s DontFront gives developers a concrete ordering constraint for marked transactions sent through the Jito block engine, but it does not cover every validator or third-party path and does not guarantee a better swap. For ordinary users, sensible slippage, transparent routing, and understanding the app’s fallback behavior matter at least as much as the word “private.”
