Usually, yes. A certificate of deposit does not lose FDIC protection merely because it is old, has been held for many years, or belonged to a deceased relative. Coverage continues while the account remains a deposit at an FDIC-insured bank. The result can change after maturity, a rollover, a transfer to another product, a change in legal ownership, or when total deposits in the same ownership category exceed the insurance limit.
What determines whether an old CD is insured
FDIC insurance follows the account’s legal status, not the age printed on the certificate. The FDIC identifies time deposits, including CDs, as insured deposit products. Insurance is automatic when the account is opened at an FDIC-insured bank; customers do not buy a separate policy. See the FDIC deposit-insurance FAQ for the agency’s current guidance.

For an old CD, check these six facts:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the institution an FDIC-insured bank? | Coverage applies to deposits at an insured bank, not automatically to every company that markets a CD-like product. |
| What legal entity holds the money? | Deposits at separately chartered insured banks are analyzed separately. Branches and trade names of the same bank are combined. |
| Who owns the account? | Single, joint, retirement, trust, employee-benefit, business and government accounts can fall into different ownership categories. |
| How much is held in that category? | All same-category deposits at the same bank are added together, including principal and accrued interest. |
| What happened at maturity? | A matured CD may have renewed, moved to another deposit account, been paid out, or been transferred into a nondeposit investment. |
| Is it direct, brokered or fiduciary-held? | Brokered and fiduciary arrangements may receive pass-through coverage only when required ownership records are complete. |
The $250,000 limit and how aggregation works
The standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. The limit is applied to the balance owed on the bank’s failure date, including accrued interest through that date, not just the original amount deposited.

At one bank, the agency combines a depositor’s CD, checking account, savings account and money-market deposit account when they are held in the same ownership category. Opening those accounts at different branches does not create separate coverage because branches are not separate banks.

Example: one owner with several accounts
Suppose one person has a $210,000 single-owner CD, $35,000 in a single-owner savings account and $20,000 in a single-owner checking account at the same insured bank. The category total is $265,000. Up to $250,000 is insured; $15,000, plus any applicable interest that pushes the total higher, is an uninsured claim if the bank fails.
Different banks are treated separately
A depositor with $200,000 in a single-owner CD at one insured bank and $200,000 in a single-owner CD at a different, separately chartered insured bank is not combining those balances for the same-bank limit. Confirm the exact legal entity rather than relying on a branch sign, online brand or trade name.
Ownership categories can provide separate coverage
Accounts in different recognized ownership categories are not automatically lumped together. The FDIC rules address categories including:

- Single accounts owned by one person.
- Joint accounts.
- Certain individual retirement and other retirement accounts.
- Revocable and irrevocable trust accounts, subject to their documentation and beneficiary rules.
- Employee-benefit plan accounts.
- Corporation, partnership and unincorporated-association accounts.
- Government accounts.
The title on the certificate, the account agreement, beneficiary designations, trust documents and the bank’s records determine how an account is classified. A different name on a statement does not, by itself, guarantee a separate insurance category.
What “old” changes at maturity or rollover
An old certificate that is still a CD
If the CD remains a time deposit at an FDIC-insured bank, its age alone does not end coverage. Keep the latest renewal notice or account agreement, because the current term, owner and institution may differ from those shown on the original paper certificate.
When the CD matured and renewed
Many banks automatically renew a CD. After renewal, the relevant account is the renewed deposit under the bank’s current records. Recheck the term, interest rate, owner, beneficiaries and balance, and include the renewed balance in the same-category total at that bank.

When proceeds moved to another deposit account
A bank may move maturity proceeds into a savings account, checking account or another deposit product. That new account is evaluated under its own ownership category and combined with other deposits in that category. The original certificate’s date no longer answers the coverage question; the current account record does.
When proceeds moved to a nondeposit investment
FDIC insurance does not cover stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, life insurance, municipal securities, Treasury securities or crypto assets. If maturity proceeds were invested in one of those products, the fact that the money originated in an insured CD does not carry insurance into the investment. Confirm whether the new instrument is a deposit account or a security, contract or other nondeposit product.
Brokered and fiduciary CDs
A brokered CD can be FDIC-insured when the underlying deposit is placed at an FDIC-insured bank, but the ownership and recordkeeping analysis is more demanding than for a CD opened directly with the bank. Insurance may pass through an intermediary to the beneficial owner only when the records satisfy FDIC requirements.

For pass-through treatment, records must disclose the fiduciary relationship and identify each beneficial owner’s interest. The beneficial owner’s share is then aggregated with that person’s other deposits in the same ownership category at the same bank. A statement showing only an intermediary’s name, without the underlying owners and amounts, can delay or complicate an insurance determination.
What to obtain for an old brokered CD
- The bank name and exact legal entity where the deposit was placed.
- The broker or fiduciary account statement identifying the beneficial owner.
- The amount attributed to that owner and the ownership category used.
- Any renewal, maturity, transfer or replacement records.
- Contact information for the intermediary’s operations or fiduciary-records department.
Do not assume that the word “CD” on a brokerage statement proves coverage. Verify the issuing bank and the deposit records supporting pass-through ownership.

What happens if the issuing bank failed
The FDIC acts as both insurer and receiver when an insured bank fails. It generally makes insured funds available by transferring deposits to an acquiring insured bank or by issuing a payment. The FDIC determines the insured amount using the bank’s records, the applicable ownership category and the balance, including accrued interest, as of the failure date.

Amounts above the applicable insurance limit are not simply erased, but they are not insured deposits. They become claims handled through the receivership and may be paid only to the extent that the failed bank’s assets permit. A fiduciary or brokered CD may require additional owner and balance information before the FDIC can release funds.
If the certificate belonged to a parent or other relative
Start with the successor bank or the FDIC, not the certificate’s appearance. Gather the certificate, death certificate if applicable, probate or trust documents, recent statements, beneficiary information and tax records. The institution will need to establish who owned the deposit on the failure date and which ownership category applied. A very old paper certificate can be evidence, but it may not reflect later renewals, assignments or transfers.
How to verify coverage step by step
- Confirm the institution. Use the FDIC’s BankFind service to check whether the named institution is an FDIC-insured bank. Record the exact chartered legal entity, including any successor name.
- Establish the current status. Read the latest account agreement, renewal notice and statements. Determine whether the CD is active, matured, automatically renewed, paid out, transferred or closed.
- Identify ownership. Check the account title, co-owners, beneficiaries, trust terms, retirement designation and any fiduciary or broker records.
- List every same-category deposit. Include CDs, checking, savings and money-market deposit accounts held by the same owner at that bank. Do not separate accounts merely because they are at different branches.
- Include accrued interest. Use the balance through the bank’s failure date when analyzing a failure, or the current balance for an ongoing account review.
- Apply the $250,000 category limit. Compare the aggregated total with the standard limit and identify any excess as potentially uninsured.
- Run the account details through EDIE. The FDIC Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator can provide an account-specific estimate when you enter the ownership and balance information accurately.
- Resolve missing records directly. Contact the successor bank or FDIC if the institution failed, especially for a brokered CD, trust account, inherited account or certificate with inconsistent names.
Common mistakes that produce the wrong answer
- Counting the certificate’s age as an expiration date. FDIC deposit-insurance rules do not set an age-based expiration for a CD.
- Treating every financial product labeled “CD” as a bank deposit. Read the disclosures to identify the issuing insured bank and whether the product is actually a deposit.
- Using branches as separate coverage buckets. Branches of one bank are combined.
- Ignoring interest. Accrued interest counts toward the limit through the failure date.
- Assuming a spouse, beneficiary or child automatically creates a new category. The legal ownership and account records control.
- Relying on an old paper certificate after a rollover. Renewal and transfer records may supersede the original document.
- Assuming a brokered CD is covered without checking pass-through records. The intermediary must identify beneficial owners and their interests for pass-through treatment.
- Confusing an uninsured excess with a total loss. Excess funds are receivership claims, while the insured portion is handled through the FDIC resolution process.
Quick case comparisons
| Situation | Likely treatment | Critical fact to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Twenty-year-old CD still held at an insured bank | Age alone does not end insurance. | Current owner, balance and bank charter. |
| CD plus savings at the same bank, same owner | Balances are aggregated in the same ownership category. | Total including accrued interest. |
| CDs at two separately chartered insured banks | Each bank’s deposits are analyzed separately. | Exact legal entities, not branch names. |
| CD renewed into another bank deposit | The renewed account is assessed under its current records. | New title, category and balance. |
| CD proceeds invested in a mutual fund or annuity | That nondeposit investment is not FDIC-insured. | Product classification after maturity. |
| Brokered CD with complete beneficial-owner records | Pass-through coverage may apply, subject to category limits. | Fiduciary relationship and owner’s interest in the records. |
| Old CD from a failed bank with funds above the limit | Insured amount is paid or transferred; excess is a receivership claim. | Failure-date balance and ownership documentation. |
When to seek a specific determination
General rules cannot resolve every inherited, trust, business or fiduciary account. Ask the successor bank or FDIC for a written explanation when the certificate has conflicting owner names, the bank changed through a merger, a trust or estate is involved, records are missing, or the intermediary cannot identify the underlying bank. Keep copies of every statement and legal document you submit. The decisive evidence is the failed or current bank’s deposit records together with valid ownership and fiduciary documentation, not the certificate’s age or format.

Bottom line
An old CD generally remains FDIC-insured if it is still a deposit at an FDIC-insured bank. To know how much is protected, identify the current bank and legal owner, determine the ownership category, aggregate all same-category deposits at that bank, and apply the $250,000 limit including accrued interest. Recheck the account after every maturity, rollover or transfer, and treat brokered or fiduciary CDs as a documentation question rather than assuming the label alone proves coverage.
