Yes, neoclouds can run production AI workloads, but a provider’s uptime target is not a complete availability guarantee. Publicly described operational controls and contractual service levels are meaningful evidence; facility incidents reported by CoreWeave and Crusoe in October 2026 show that power, cooling, and capacity problems can still interrupt compute, inference, and storage. Production readiness depends on whether your application can withstand those interruptions—not just on a provider’s stated uptime.

What is a neocloud, and what does “reliable enough” mean?

A neocloud is a public-cloud company focused on on-demand AI compute. The OECD uses the term for smaller providers in that market and names CoreWeave, Crusoe, Nebius, and Lambda Labs as examples.

For a production buyer, reliability is not one number. It includes whether GPUs and networks remain available, whether a job can recover after a node or facility fails, whether the data needed to resume is accessible, and whether the provider communicates and restores service effectively. A platform can have competent engineering and still experience a disruptive incident; the important question is whether the provider’s failure modes and your own recovery design fit the workload.

That distinction matters especially for AI: a long training run may lose work or need to restart when compute disappears, while an inference service may become unavailable or degraded at the moment users need it. The impact depends on the system you build around the compute.

What reliability controls do providers describe?

Provider descriptions show that operational controls are part of the offer, but claims about controls should be assessed alongside contractual terms and actual incidents.

CoreWeave

CoreWeave describes its platform as using fault-tolerant infrastructure, automated fleet, rack, and node lifecycle management, and continuous health monitoring. It says these capabilities are unified through Mission Control for proactive detection and remediation. Those are relevant controls for identifying and addressing problems within a fleet; they do not establish that every facility or region is independent of every other failure.

Crusoe

Crusoe advertises automatic node swapping, proactive fault detection, real-time performance monitoring, 24/7 enterprise support, managed Kubernetes, and managed inference. These offerings may reduce the operational work a customer must do, but a buyer still needs to determine what happens to their particular workload when an entire facility or available capacity is affected.

When evaluating operational claims, ask what the control does in a real failure: does it replace a single failed node, move a workload to another facility, preserve job state, or simply alert an operator? Those outcomes are not interchangeable. A control that repairs a component may not restore a job that depends on lost or inaccessible data.

What does Crusoe’s GPU VM uptime SLA actually guarantee?

Crusoe’s GPU-enabled VM SLA, effective in 2026, sets a monthly uptime service-level objective (SLO) of at least 99.5%. The credit schedule below applies to the monthly uptime ranges stated in that SLA.

Monthly uptime Service credit stated in the SLA
95.00%–99.49% 10%
90.00%–94.99% 25%
Below 90% 100%

A 99.5% monthly target is not five-nines availability. In a 30-day month, 0.5% of the month is about 3 hours and 36 minutes; the exact result changes with month length. Treat that as an illustration of the target’s tolerance, not a prediction of how much downtime a customer will experience. The contract’s exclusions and measurement rules affect whether a particular interruption counts.

The SLA also says financial credit is the sole and exclusive remedy. That makes the credit schedule important, but it does not mean a credit restores a missed training deadline, compensates for downstream business impact, or guarantees that an application will remain available. Buyers should read the complete agreement for the covered service, measurement window, exclusions, claim process, and remedies rather than treating the headline percentage as a complete risk transfer.

What do the October 2026 incidents tell production buyers?

Two reported facility incidents illustrate why local redundancy and capacity recovery matter. They are evidence of real failure modes, not proof that all neocloud deployments or all facilities have the same reliability.

CoreWeave: US-EAST-15A

CoreWeave’s status page reported a facility power event beginning October 22, 2026. Customers could experience compute unavailability, job interruptions, inference disruption, and degraded or unavailable object storage. After partial recovery, a renewed cooling disruption was under investigation on October 25. This sequence shows that recovery can be partial and that a further facility problem can emerge while service is being restored.

Crusoe: us-east2

Crusoe’s status page reported a facility issue in us-east2 beginning October 15, 2026. Affected hardware was powered down as a safety precaution. Recovery included repairs and safety checks, with customers moved to other available capacity where possible. “Where possible” is a key qualification: relocation depends on suitable capacity being available, not merely on a provider having another location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These events also make status-page quality relevant to procurement. A useful update helps a customer understand what is affected, what recovery action is underway, and whether service is restored or still degraded. Communication is not a substitute for resilience, but it is part of the information a production team needs to make safe decisions during an incident.

Are neoclouds less reliable than AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud?

The available evidence does not establish that neoclouds as a class are less reliable—or more reliable—than those hyperscalers. A sponsored workload study offers a narrow comparison, but it is not a broad, neutral measurement of provider uptime.

A September 2026 Surf Report study sponsored by Crusoe described a 48-hour, 24-GPU Llama 3.1 70B training run with failures injected. It reported the following goodput, meaning the share of the run’s time that contributed to useful training progress as measured by that study:

Provider in the study Reported goodput under injected failures
Crusoe Cloud 99.1%
Tested competing neocloud 94.2%
Tested hyperscaler 95.9%

The study says production results will vary. It was sponsored by Crusoe and tested one competing neocloud, so its figures are directional evidence about that tested setup, not an industry ranking or a guarantee for a buyer’s workload. Goodput under injected failures also is not the same measure as a contractual monthly uptime SLO: it reflects useful progress in a specific training experiment, not necessarily service availability across a month.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fair decision, compare providers using the same workload, recovery requirements, region assumptions, and measurement method. Do not infer a general reliability hierarchy from one sponsored run, and do not assume a hyperscaler is automatically a suitable fallback unless you have verified that your software, data, and capacity can move there.

How should you evaluate a neocloud before production?

Ask for evidence tied to the failure modes your application cannot tolerate. A procurement review should cover the contract, infrastructure boundaries, recovery, data, operations, and commercial arrangements.

Contract and measurement

  • Identify the exact service covered by the SLO, including whether it applies to GPU-enabled VMs, managed inference, storage, or another component.
  • Read the measurement window, exclusions, uptime calculation, and process for requesting credits. Confirm whether credits are the only contractual remedy.
  • Ask how an incident affecting a facility or storage service is reflected in the applicable measurement. Do not assume that every customer-visible impact qualifies as covered downtime.

Failure domains and capacity

  • Ask which regions and facilities are available to your account, and what independence exists between their power and cooling systems.
  • Determine whether your service can actually be moved across those boundaries, who initiates the move, and what suitable capacity is reserved or otherwise available.
  • Clarify whether the provider’s recovery option is automatic replacement of a node or relocation of a workload after a broader facility event.

Recovery behavior

  • For training, establish what happens when a GPU or node disappears: whether the job stops, restarts, or can continue, and what state must be restored.
  • For inference, test how the serving system responds when capacity becomes unavailable. Define the acceptable degraded mode, not only the desired steady state.
  • Ask how the control plane behaves during a compute incident, what monitoring is available to your team, and how status updates and escalation work.

Data and network path

  • Map where checkpoints, model artifacts, inputs, and outputs reside. Verify that the copy needed for recovery is not dependent on the same affected facility as the compute.
  • Ask about storage durability and replication boundaries, including whether object storage can be affected by the same event as compute.
  • Measure the network behavior your distributed job needs, including GPU-to-GPU communication. A compute allocation alone does not establish that a distributed training run will make useful progress.
  • Check how long exporting required data would take in practice and whether the destination is usable by your recovery environment.

Operations and commercial resilience

  • Review escalation coverage, maintenance notices, observability, security controls, and the compliance evidence required by your organization.
  • Confirm reserved capacity, quota commitments, and price-change terms for the capacity your recovery plan relies on. Availability in a catalog does not by itself establish that enough capacity will be available during an incident.
  • Plan a fallback provider or a reduced-service mode, and validate its feasibility before relying on it for critical traffic.

What safeguards should be in place before launch?

Design around the possibility that a facility, capacity pool, or job can become unavailable. The minimum safeguards below address the kinds of interruptions described in the October incidents.

  1. Separate critical dependencies. Use more than one failure domain, and check that the compute and the recovery data do not all rely on the same facility or region.
  2. Checkpoint and preserve artifacts. Set a checkpoint policy for training that matches the amount of lost work your team can accept. Persist checkpoints and artifacts outside the primary region so a local disruption does not remove both compute and the means to resume.
  3. Automate restart and requeue. Make job recovery an explicit, tested behavior. Define what the scheduler or operator should do when a node disappears, and verify that a restart can find the right data and configuration.
  4. Keep independent backups. Maintain copies that are not dependent on the primary compute environment. A backup that cannot be reached during a provider incident is not a useful recovery path for that incident.
  5. Monitor the service from the user’s perspective. Use synthetic inference checks alongside provider and control-plane monitoring, so the team can distinguish a functioning dashboard from a working application.
  6. Define failover or degraded mode. Decide what the application should do if capacity cannot be restored quickly: shift traffic, limit service, queue requests, or communicate an outage. The appropriate behavior depends on the product.
  7. Run a failure-injection exercise. Before committing critical traffic, test the recovery path by simulating loss of a node or capacity. Confirm that checkpoints, requeue, monitoring, and escalation work together rather than existing only as separate plans.

How should you account for reliability in the business case?

Compare the cost of a deployment with the cost of its failure modes, rather than treating the provider’s compute price as the whole production cost. The relevant exposure includes interrupted work, recovery time, unavailable inference, engineering effort, and any customer or business commitments affected by the interruption. The available data provides no general price comparison or basis for quantifying those losses, so estimate them using your own workload and service requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision is to identify the maximum tolerable interruption and the maximum acceptable amount of lost work, then test whether the design can meet both. For a training team, that means measuring how much work is lost between checkpoints and how long a restart takes. For an inference team, it means deciding what customers experience when capacity is unavailable and whether a fallback can serve the necessary traffic.

Then compare that exposure with the added operational and infrastructure cost of redundancy, backups, reserved capacity, or a fallback environment. SLA credits can be included as one contractual factor, but because Crusoe’s SLA states they are the sole and exclusive remedy, they should not be treated as a substitute for a recovery plan. A deployment that depends on one provider, one region, and uninterrupted capacity is taking a different business risk from a deployment designed to recover.

So, are neoclouds production-ready?

They can be, when the customer’s architecture supplies workload-level resilience: redundancy across failure domains, recoverable training state, portable data, a tested restart or failover path, and operational monitoring. The evidence does not justify a blanket verdict about every provider, workload, or comparison with a hyperscaler. A single-region, single-provider design that treats a published SLO as a complete availability guarantee is not a robust production design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a monthly uptime SLO guarantee low inference latency?

No. Uptime and latency describe different aspects of service: a system may be reachable while responding more slowly than your application can tolerate. Set and measure a latency objective for your inference path separately from the provider’s availability terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I start with a neocloud for development or experiments?

A noncritical development or experimental workload can be a sensible place to learn how the provider’s tooling, monitoring, and recovery behavior fit your team. Keep production data and critical service commitments out of that trial unless you have already validated the necessary controls.

What should I include in an outage-cost estimate for AI?

Separate direct compute disruption from business impact: estimate wasted or repeated work, staff time spent restoring service, and the consequences of unavailable or degraded inference. Use your own service commitments and observed recovery tests; the October 2026 incidents do not establish a universal outage-cost figure.
