Short answer: A mutual-fund SIP on Groww is not made risk-free by the app. Groww’s disclosures state that it charges no platform fee for mutual-fund investing and no fee for redemption. You still bear the selected scheme’s market risk and scheme-level costs, including the expense ratio, any applicable exit load, stamp duty, taxes and, for sales of equity-oriented funds, securities transaction tax (STT).
“Free on Groww” therefore means no Groww service charge. It does not mean guaranteed returns, guaranteed capital, or an absence of charges inside the fund. Your practical safety check is to verify the exact fund and plan, read its scheme documents, inspect the current expense-ratio and exit-load rules, and understand what assets the fund owns before starting or stopping a SIP.

What “safe” means for a Groww SIP
There are two separate questions: whether the platform’s fee process is transparent, and whether the investment can lose value. Groww states that mutual-fund investing on its platform is free of charge and that it charges no fee for withdrawals or redemptions. Those statements address Groww’s service charges, not the performance of the mutual-fund scheme.

A SIP is simply a method of investing a chosen amount at intervals. Each instalment buys units at the applicable net asset value (NAV). The NAV can rise or fall with the securities held by the scheme, so a SIP does not guarantee either a profit or a return of principal. Regular instalments can spread the timing of purchases, but they do not remove market exposure.

Platform safety versus investment safety
- Platform-cost question: Groww says its platform fee for mutual-fund investing is zero, and its redemption fee is zero.
- Scheme-cost question: The fund’s expense ratio, exit-load schedule, stamp duty and taxes can still reduce what you receive.
- Market-risk question: The value of the units depends on the fund’s portfolio. Equity, debt and other categories have different risks, and no SIP label changes that exposure.
Do not treat “direct” or “free” as a promise that a fund is suitable for you. A low-cost fund can still be volatile, lose money over a period, or be inappropriate for your time horizon.
Charges that can apply
The following costs come from different sources. Groww’s zero platform fee does not replace them.
| Cost | What it is | Who sets or collects it | When it affects you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Groww platform fee | Service charge for investing in mutual funds | Groww | Groww states this is zero |
| Redemption fee | Platform charge for withdrawing or redeeming | Groww | Groww states this is zero |
| Expense ratio | Ongoing operating cost reflected inside the fund’s NAV | The asset-management company and scheme | Accrues while you hold units; the percentage varies by scheme |
| Exit load | Charge for redeeming within a scheme’s specified period | The fund house under the scheme’s rules | When units are sold before the applicable holding period |
| Stamp duty | Government levy associated with mutual-fund transactions | Government rules | When applicable to the transaction |
| Taxes | Tax liabilities connected with the investment or transaction | Tax law | When the relevant tax rule applies |
| STT | Securities transaction tax on sales of equity-oriented mutual funds | Government rules | On sale of equity-oriented funds; Groww says it is not charged when redeeming debt-oriented funds |
| Entry load for SIP registration | Up-front charge for registering the SIP | Scheme terms and applicable regulations | SEBI scheme documentation states that no entry load is charged for SIP registrations |
Because only some costs are platform charges, the amount you receive on redemption can be lower than the displayed value of your units after applicable loads, taxes or levies.

How the expense ratio affects a SIP
The expense ratio is an ongoing percentage charged within the scheme. It is not normally presented as a separate Groww invoice. Instead, fund expenses are reflected in the NAV used to value your units. A higher expense ratio creates a larger drag on returns than a lower one, all else equal.

There is no single “Groww expense ratio.” The percentage belongs to the selected mutual-fund scheme and can differ between schemes and plans. Before confirming a SIP, check the current expense-ratio figure shown for that exact fund and plan, then read the scheme information document for the governing terms.
Exit loads and why SIP instalments can have different dates
An exit load is a scheme-level charge for redeeming units within a specified period. Groww says the approximate exit load is shown when a redemption request is placed, but you should also check the fund’s own documents before investing.
Each SIP instalment creates a separate allotment of units. Consequently, the holding period is measured separately for each instalment. If you redeem a portion of your investment, the units from different instalments can be subject to different exit-load windows. A single SIP does not create one universal exit-load date for the entire balance.

Suppose a scheme applies a load to units redeemed within its specified period. Units purchased in January may have completed that period while units purchased in a later month may still be inside it. Redeeming the same rupee amount can therefore produce a different load depending on which instalments are treated as sold. The applicable schedule is the one published for that scheme, not a universal Groww rule.

What you pay when you redeem
Groww states that it does not charge a redemption or withdrawal fee. That does not make every redemption cost-free. The fund may deduct an exit load, and government charges can apply.
- Equity-oriented fund: Groww lists STT on sale, in addition to any scheme exit load and applicable taxes or stamp duty.
- Debt-oriented fund: Groww says STT is not charged when redeeming debt-oriented funds, although other applicable costs and taxes still need to be considered.
- Any scheme: Check the current exit-load schedule and the transaction disclosure before submitting the request.
Look at the redemption estimate shown during the request process, but treat it as an estimate tied to the scheme’s rules and the transaction details. The final amount can depend on the applicable NAV, units selected, load and statutory deductions.
Direct and regular plans: the important distinction
AMFI explains that a “Direct Plan” and a “Regular Plan” are part of the same mutual-fund scheme, hold the same or common portfolio and are managed by the same fund manager. Their cost structures differ.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Feature | Direct plan | Regular plan |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying portfolio | Same scheme portfolio | Same scheme portfolio |
| Fund manager | Same fund manager as the corresponding regular plan | Same fund manager as the corresponding direct plan |
| Expense ratio | Lower because no distributor or agent commission is included | Higher when distributor or agent commission is included |
| Investor support model | You research and select the scheme yourself, or obtain advice separately | Distribution channel can provide guidance as part of its service |
A Groww SIP can be cheaper when it is in the direct plan because the expense ratio is generally lower. Lower cost does not make the fund safer or guarantee better returns. It only removes the distributor-commission component described by AMFI.

AMFI also notes that direct-plan investors need to research schemes, choose appropriately and understand the risks. New or inexperienced investors may benefit from guidance and may find a regular plan more suitable. The right choice depends on whether you can make and maintain your own fund selection, not simply on the word “direct.”
How to check a SIP before you start
- Confirm the complete identity: Record the fund name, option, plan type and investment category. Make sure you are selecting the direct or regular plan you actually intend to hold.
- Read the scheme information document: Use the fund house’s scheme documentation to review the investment objective, portfolio exposure, risk information, expense ratio and transaction rules.
- Check the current expense ratio: Compare the percentage for the exact plan. Do not assume every fund available through Groww has the same rate.
- Check the exit-load schedule: Note the holding period, the charge and any exceptions. Remember that each SIP instalment has its own allotment date.
- Identify market exposure: Determine whether the scheme is equity-oriented, debt-oriented or another category, and decide whether its volatility and time horizon fit your purpose.
- Review statutory costs: Allow for stamp duty, taxes and, for equity-oriented fund sales, STT.
- Decide whether you need advice: If you cannot assess the scheme or its risk, consider using a SEBI-registered adviser rather than treating the platform interface as personal advice.
- Keep the documents: Save the scheme details and the transaction records so you can check the rules later when an instalment becomes eligible for redemption.
Questions to ask before stopping or redeeming a SIP
Stopping future instalments and redeeming existing units are different actions. A change to future contributions does not by itself remove loads or taxes from units you already own. Before selling, work through these checks:
- Which instalments are included in the redemption?
- Has each included instalment passed the scheme’s exit-load period?
- What expense ratio has applied while the units were held?
- Is the fund equity-oriented, making STT relevant on sale?
- What taxes and stamp duty apply to the transaction?
- Does the estimated redemption amount show a scheme-level deduction?
These checks matter even when Groww’s own redemption fee is zero, because the fund-house and government deductions are separate.
Comparing Groww with another way to buy mutual funds
If you are deciding between Groww, an asset-management company’s website, MFU or another platform, compare the interface and service rather than assuming the scheme itself changes. The same fund’s portfolio risk and scheme-level expenses remain tied to the selected plan.

| Comparison point | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Direct versus regular availability | Determines whether distributor commission is included and affects the expense ratio. |
| Platform and transaction fees | Separates the provider’s service charge from fund and government costs. |
| Account and redemption workflow | Shows how easily you can review holdings, submit a redemption and see deductions. |
| Expense-ratio and exit-load visibility | Helps you verify scheme costs before investing or selling. |
| Investor support and advice | Matters if you need help selecting a scheme or understanding risk. |
| Holding format | Check whether holdings are recorded in demat or statement-of-account form and whether that suits your record-keeping needs. |
Changing platforms does not convert a regular plan into a direct plan, remove an existing exit load or eliminate market risk. Verify the plan and scheme terms whenever you make a new purchase.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating zero fees as zero risk
A zero Groww platform charge says nothing about whether the underlying securities will gain or lose value. Read the fund’s risk information and match it to your time horizon.
Mistake: assuming every SIP has the same exit-load date
Because instalments are separate allotments, different portions of your balance can be inside or outside the load period. Check the schedule for the units you plan to redeem.
Mistake: comparing only the app’s displayed fee
The relevant cost comparison includes the plan’s expense ratio, not just the platform fee. A direct and regular plan of the same scheme can have different expense ratios.
Mistake: overlooking STT and taxes
For equity-oriented fund sales, include STT in your estimate. Also account for applicable taxes and stamp duty rather than assuming the displayed fund value is your final proceeds.
Mistake: selecting a direct plan without understanding the fund
Direct plans remove distributor commission but leave you responsible for scheme selection and risk assessment. If you need personalized guidance, seek it from a SEBI-registered adviser.
Bottom line
Groww’s published disclosures support a narrow conclusion: its platform fee for mutual-fund investing is zero, and it does not charge a redemption fee. Your SIP is still a market-linked mutual-fund investment. The expense ratio, any exit load, stamp duty, taxes and—in equity-oriented sales—STT can apply. Check the exact plan and scheme documents, track each instalment’s holding period, and choose direct investing only if you can evaluate the fund and its risks yourself.
