Broad European equities can be safer than a concentrated US technology allocation when your main risks are mega-cap concentration, high valuations and sensitivity to interest-rate or growth shocks. The comparison changes if you mean European technology shares, a diversified US index, or an investor whose spending and savings are in a different currency.
Europe is not a “safe” asset class. It still carries equity, currency, political, energy, banking and liquidity risks. The useful question is whether adding broad European exposure reduces the particular risks already dominant in your US technology holdings.

What “safer” should mean in this comparison
Safety for an equity investor is multidimensional. A portfolio can have a lower valuation but larger country risk, or broader sector diversification but higher currency volatility. Before comparing, define the risk you are trying to reduce:
Recommended Free Tools
- Concentration risk: losses caused by a small number of companies or one sector driving the index.
- Valuation risk: the possibility that expensive shares fall when earnings disappoint or interest rates rise.
- Market volatility: the size and frequency of price movements.
- Drawdown risk: the peak-to-trough loss you must tolerate before a recovery.
- Currency risk: changes in the exchange rate between your home currency and the assets you own.
- Structural risk: exposure to regulation, energy costs, political events, banking stress or a particular economic model.
“US technology stocks” can mean a narrow basket of mega-cap software, semiconductor and internet companies, while “European stocks” can mean hundreds of companies across many countries and sectors. Those are not equivalent exposures. A diversified US index and a European technology index may have more in common with each other than either has with its region’s broad market.

Why broad European equities may be safer than concentrated US technology
Lower dependence on a handful of companies
MSCI’s diversification analysis at December 31, 2023 found that the ten largest stocks in the MSCI USA Index represented about 23% of index earnings but contributed roughly 34% of the index’s total risk. A small group of companies therefore had a larger influence on portfolio risk than on aggregate profits.
MSCI also reported that information technology plus communication services reached 40% of the US equity market by the third quarter of 2024. That weight means an investor who believes they own “the US market” may in practice have a substantial exposure to technology-led growth, advertising, cloud spending, semiconductors and the valuation of a few very large firms.
MSCI described concentration in Europe and the United Kingdom as more muted than in the United States. A broad European index spreads exposure across financials, industrials, health care, consumer companies, utilities, energy and technology, as well as across countries. That breadth can reduce the damage from a single product cycle, regulatory action or earnings miss.

The European Central Bank has reported that US equity indices traded at notably higher price-to-earnings ratios than European counterparts. MSCI’s December 31, 2023 comparison likewise placed the MSCI USA, MSCI World and MSCI ACWI among the markets with the highest forward P/E ratios, while MSCI Europe was lower both in absolute terms and relative to its own history.
A lower P/E does not guarantee a higher return or a smaller loss. It does mean that investors are paying less for each unit of forecast earnings, so the portfolio may be less exposed to a sudden reversal in optimism. Expensive US technology shares can fall even when their businesses remain profitable if expected growth, margins or interest rates change. European shares can also be repriced sharply when earnings weaken; “cheaper” is a valuation description, not a safety certificate.

US technology fund flows have reacted more strongly to shocks
An ECB analysis published in 2026 found that flows into US technology funds reacted more strongly to monetary-policy, macroeconomic and broad risk shocks than flows into broad US or euro-area funds. This is consistent with the long-duration nature of many technology valuations: when expected interest rates rise, the present value of profits expected far in the future can fall disproportionately.
The ECB also estimated that around 70% of the increase in euro-area holdings of US equities between 2015 and 2025 was driven by valuation effects. That observation does not predict a crash, but it shows why a rapid repricing of highly valued US shares could affect European investors through wealth effects, financing conditions and portfolio flows. A fall in US technology would not necessarily stay confined to the United States.
What the volatility data actually show
STOXX’s factsheet provides a clean illustration of sector concentration inside Europe. It reports the following annualized volatilities:
| Index | Measurement period | Annualized volatility |
|---|---|---|
| STOXX Europe 600 Technology | One year | 24.7% |
| STOXX Europe 600 | One year | 12.4% |
| STOXX Europe 600 Technology | Three years | 23.4% |
| STOXX Europe 600 | Three years | 12.5% |
These figures are from the current STOXX factsheet and compare European technology with broad European equities. They are not a complete backtest of US technology against Europe: the periods, index compositions, currencies and market conditions may differ. They do establish an important point: choosing a European technology fund does not deliver the same diversification as choosing broad European equities.
The STOXX Europe 600 Technology index itself is concentrated. Its largest holdings include ASML, SAP and Infineon, and the supersector methodology caps the largest company at 30%. A regional label therefore tells you little about risk until you inspect sector weights, company weights and the index rules.

How severe technology-led stress could be
Semiconductor-specific losses
In an MSCI scenario published in 2025, global semiconductors underperformed the broader market by about 45%. The scenario was designed to show how a concentrated technology segment can suffer when its earnings expectations, capital spending cycle or valuation are challenged. It is not a forecast and does not mean every semiconductor downturn will have that result.

Another MSCI scenario, using November 25, 2024 data, modeled a 19% decline in global stocks. In that scenario, the ten largest stocks fell 25%, global information technology underperformed the MSCI ACWI by 7%, and semiconductors underperformed by 15%. MSCI noted that information technology and communication services were already 40% of the US equity market by the third quarter of 2024.
The implication is not that European markets would rise during a US technology sell-off. European companies can be hit by weaker global demand, tighter credit and falling investor wealth. The implication is that a broad portfolio may avoid having its entire result determined by the same narrow set of growth and valuation assumptions.
When European stocks can be less safe
Currency movements can dominate your return
If your spending currency is the US dollar, pound or another currency, an unhedged European investment adds foreign-exchange risk. A European share can rise in euros while producing a lower return in your home currency if the euro or other local currencies weaken. Currency hedging can reduce that variation, but it introduces costs, tracking differences and a separate hedging decision.
Country and political shocks are real
European indexes combine countries with different fiscal positions, election calendars, regulations and industrial policies. A government crisis, trade dispute or change in energy policy can affect one country more than another. Diversifying across Europe reduces single-country exposure but does not remove regional political risk.

Energy, industrial and banking cycles matter
European markets generally have larger weights in banks, industrial companies, energy, materials and mature consumer businesses than a concentrated US technology basket. Those sectors can be sensitive to energy prices, manufacturing demand, credit losses and the economic cycle. Their lower valuations may partly reflect slower structural growth or greater cyclicality.
Lower growth is not automatically lower risk
Some European companies operate in slower-growing markets or face heavier regulatory constraints. A business with a modest valuation can still deliver poor returns if earnings stagnate, dividends are cut or its competitive position deteriorates. Valuation should be assessed alongside profitability, balance-sheet strength and earnings durability.
Liquidity and market structure differ
Large US technology shares often trade with deep liquidity and tight spreads. Smaller European markets and individual country exchanges can be less liquid, especially during stress. Broad funds usually improve diversification, but the underlying shares can still react differently when investors rush to sell.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare a Europe fund with US technology holdings
Use a like-for-like process rather than relying on regional labels. The following sequence keeps the comparison meaningful:
- Define the actual indexes. Write down the fund or benchmark name, country coverage, sector definition, number of holdings and whether it is broad Europe, European technology, a diversified US index or a concentrated US technology basket.
- Match the currency and return basis. Compare total returns, including reinvested dividends, in the same currency and over the same dates. State whether each result is hedged or unhedged.
- Measure realized risk. Examine annualized volatility, maximum drawdown, downside capture and the length of past recovery periods. A single one-year volatility figure cannot describe every market regime.
- Inspect concentration. Record the top-ten weight, each company’s risk contribution where available, and the sector weights. A fund with 100 holdings can still be dominated by a few names if those names are large.
- Check valuation and fundamentals. Compare forward and trailing P/E, price-to-book where relevant, earnings growth assumptions, return on equity, free-cash-flow margins, debt and dividend yield. Note the date because valuation changes daily.
- Test interest-rate sensitivity. Ask how much of the portfolio’s value depends on profits expected many years ahead. High-duration growth shares may react more to bond yields than banks, insurers or established industrial companies.
- Review currency exposure. Identify the currencies of the companies’ revenues and the currency in which the fund is priced. A company listed in Europe may earn much of its revenue elsewhere, so listing country is not the same as economic exposure.
- Run stress cases. Consider a higher-rate shock, a global recession, an energy-price surge, a semiconductor downturn and a 20% broad-market decline. Estimate how each holding and the combined portfolio might respond rather than assuming historical averages will repeat.
What diversification decision makes sense?
If your portfolio is dominated by US mega-cap technology
Adding a broad European allocation can reduce dependence on the same companies, earnings narratives and interest-rate assumptions. The benefit comes from different sectors and countries, not from a guarantee that Europe will outperform or fall less in every month.

If you already own a diversified global index
You may already have European exposure. A separate Europe fund then changes regional weights rather than creating diversification from zero. Check the existing index’s country and sector breakdown before adding another position.
If you are considering European technology instead
European technology can provide company and business-model differences from US technology, but it remains a sector allocation. The STOXX volatility figures show why it should not be treated as equivalent to broad Europe.
If you need the money soon
Neither broad Europe nor US technology is a cash substitute. Equity prices can fall sharply over a short horizon, and currency movements can amplify the result. Match the allocation to the date you need the money and your ability to tolerate a prolonged drawdown.

Broad European equities may be safer than concentrated US technology stocks when the risks you want to reduce are mega-cap concentration, elevated valuation and sensitivity to rate or technology shocks. The conclusion does not extend automatically to European technology, individual European countries or every investor’s home-currency return. Compare the actual indexes on concentration, valuation, volatility, drawdown, sector mix, fundamentals and currency exposure, then use regional diversification as one part of a balanced allocation rather than as a binary safety label.
