Usually, yes—but only when the gift is made to an eligible charitable organization for a scholarship program and is not reserved for one particular student. For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, you generally must itemize deductions, satisfy the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) substantiation rules, stay within applicable deduction limits, and reduce the deductible amount for any benefit you receive in return. The university itself or a separately incorporated university foundation may be the legal recipient, so verify the entity before claiming a deduction.
This is general federal guidance. State tax rules and the rules for a contribution made in 2026 may differ from the federal rules described in IRS publications for 2025.

What makes a university scholarship donation deductible?
A scholarship gift can be a charitable contribution when two conditions are met:

- The organization—not the donor—controls awards under a scholarship program rather than holding the money for a named individual.
IRS Publication 526 (2025), Charitable Contributions states that contributions must be made to a qualified organization and must not be “set aside for use by a specific person.” That rule is the dividing line between a charitable program gift and a nondeductible personal transfer.

A gift to a general scholarship fund
If you donate to a university’s general scholarship fund, the institution can usually select recipients under its published eligibility and selection rules. Provided the receiving entity is qualified and the other deduction requirements are met, the gift may be claimed as a charitable contribution when you file your federal return.
A gift reserved for one student
A payment earmarked for a particular student is not deductible as a charitable contribution, even if the university or its foundation processes the payment. Passing the money through a qualified organization does not change the fact that the gift is set aside for a specific individual.

That restriction answers the common question, “Can I deduct a scholarship donation if I choose the student?” If your designation identifies one recipient, treat the payment as a personal gift rather than a deductible charitable contribution.

Donor preferences: what is clear and what requires confirmation
Many institutions let donors express preferences—such as a field of study, campus, geographic origin, academic level, or financial-need criterion. The sources establish the specific-person restriction, but they do not classify every possible scholarship-design variation. A preference that describes a broad, objective group is not automatically the same as naming one student.
Ask the organization to explain, in writing, whether it retains control over recipient selection. A compliant program should apply documented criteria and make awards through the institution’s process rather than treating your contribution as money held for a person you identify. Do not rely solely on a fund’s informal name or a donor’s understanding of its purpose.
Verify who legally receives the contribution
The payee may be the university, an affiliated nonprofit foundation, or another organization supporting the school. Those entities can have different tax statuses and separate legal identities. The name on a campus website or check request is not enough to establish eligibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Read the gift agreement, online donation page, or acknowledgment letter to identify the exact legal recipient and its employer identification information, if provided.
- Check the recipient in the IRS Charitable contribution deductions guidance and use the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search when appropriate.
- Confirm that the organization—not an individual, informal student group, or nonqualified account—is the entity accepting the contribution.
- Keep the organization’s written explanation of the scholarship program with your tax records.
A university-affiliated foundation may be a qualified organization, but affiliation alone does not prove that it is. Verify the actual recipient for every separate fund or campaign.

Federal deduction rules you still have to meet
You generally must itemize
Under the IRS rules cited above, individuals generally claim charitable-contribution deductions only when they itemize deductions on Schedule A. Someone who uses the standard deduction generally does not claim a separate charitable-contribution deduction under those rules. Compare your potential itemized deductions with the standard deduction for the applicable tax year before assuming the gift will reduce taxable income.
Tax law can change by year. The available materials describe 2025 IRS publications and do not establish every mechanic for a contribution made in 2026, so check the current instructions for that return or consult a tax professional.
Limits can restrict the amount
Deduction limits vary with factors such as the type of property contributed and the type of recipient organization. A cash gift and a noncash asset can have different valuation and limitation rules. IRS Publication 526 explains the applicable categories and carryover provisions; do not apply a percentage or dollar limit from a prior year without checking the rules for the year of your contribution.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A benefit received in return reduces the charitable portion
If the university or another party gives you a financial or economic benefit in exchange for the payment—such as goods, services, admission, or another privilege—the benefit portion generally is not deductible. Keep the organization’s disclosure of the value of anything provided and claim only the amount that qualifies under the applicable quid-pro-quo rules. A payment described as a “donation” is not automatically fully deductible if you receive something of value.

Timing and substantiation matter
The IRS requires records showing what you gave, to whom, and when, with additional acknowledgment requirements for larger gifts and certain types of property. Retain the receipt, bank or card record, transfer confirmation, and any written acknowledgment from the recipient. For a noncash contribution, keep the information needed to establish the property description and value under the rules for that type of asset.
Compare common scholarship-giving arrangements
| Arrangement | Who controls the award? | Federal charitable-deduction treatment | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gift to a university’s unrestricted scholarship fund | The university under its program rules | May qualify, subject to qualified-recipient, itemization, limits, benefit, and substantiation rules | Legal recipient and written fund purpose |
| Gift to a university foundation’s scholarship program | The foundation or university selection committee | May qualify if the foundation is a qualified organization and the program is not for a specific person | Foundation’s separate legal and tax status |
| Gift restricted to one named student | The donor effectively directs the benefit to that individual | Not deductible as a charitable contribution | Remove the specific-person designation; ask the organization about an alternative program gift |
| Gift with a donor preference for a broad field or eligibility group | Should remain with the organization if the program is properly administered | Not automatically disqualified, but the sources do not decide every design; obtain written confirmation | Objective criteria and institutional control over selection |
| Payment that provides goods, services, or another economic benefit | Organization and donor exchange value | The benefit portion generally is not deductible; only the allowable charitable portion may qualify | Written disclosure of the benefit’s value |
A practical pre-donation checklist
- Identify the purpose. Decide whether you are supporting a program or trying to pay for a particular student. A personal gift to a named student is not a charitable deduction.
- Identify the legal recipient. Determine whether the payee is the university, a foundation, or another entity.
- Verify qualification. Check the entity through the IRS resources and request confirmation if its status is unclear.
- Read the fund terms. Look for language describing selection authority, eligibility criteria, donor restrictions, and whether awards are made under a nondiscriminatory process.
- Ask about benefits. Determine whether the contribution includes tickets, memberships, merchandise, services, or another economic benefit, and obtain the organization’s value disclosure.
- Plan for itemization. Estimate your itemized deductions for the relevant year; a person using the standard deduction generally cannot claim this separate charitable deduction under the cited federal rules.
- Preserve documentation. Save the acknowledgment and payment records, and keep additional records required for the amount and form of the contribution.
- Check the tax year. For a 2026 gift, use current IRS instructions rather than carrying forward 2025 limits or procedures.
Examples that show the difference
Example: unrestricted need-based fund
You give $2,000 to a university’s need-based scholarship fund. The university chooses recipients from its applicant pool, sends you a written acknowledgment, and provides no goods or services. If the recipient is qualified, you itemize, and no deduction limit or other rule blocks the claim, the payment may qualify as a charitable contribution.
Example: “for Jordan Smith”
You give $2,000 to a university and instruct it to award the money to Jordan Smith. Even if the university’s finance office deposits the check and issues a receipt, the gift is set aside for a specific person and is not deductible as a charitable contribution.

You ask that your contribution support first-generation students studying engineering, while the university retains authority to select recipients. That arrangement is different from naming one student, but the available IRS materials do not approve every possible restriction. Obtain the program’s written rules and confirmation that the institution—not you—makes the award decisions.

Example: fundraising event connected to scholarships
You pay for a scholarship benefit dinner and receive a meal and entertainment. The amount attributable to those benefits generally is not deductible; the organization should tell you the deductible portion, if any, in its disclosure.
Special rules when a private foundation is involved
A private foundation that makes scholarship grants to individuals faces additional requirements. IRS guidance on grants to individuals describes the need for an objective, nondiscriminatory selection procedure approved in advance by the IRS. Those rules govern the foundation’s grant program; they do not turn a donor’s payment to a named student into a deductible contribution.
If a university foundation identifies itself as a private foundation, ask how its scholarship procedure satisfies the applicable rules. Keep its written explanation with your records, especially when your gift carries eligibility preferences.
The student’s tax treatment is a separate question
Your ability to claim a charitable deduction does not determine whether the student owes tax on the scholarship. IRS Publication 970 (2025), Tax Benefits for Education, applies separate rules to the recipient. Scholarship or fellowship amounts are generally tax-free only to the extent the student meets the requirements and uses the funds for qualified education expenses. Room and board generally are not qualified expenses for that exclusion.
Consequently, a deductible program donation for the donor and a taxable scholarship amount for the student can coexist. The donor should evaluate the contribution under charitable-deduction rules, while the student should separately track how the award is used.
State taxes and 2026 contributions
This article addresses U.S. federal income-tax treatment. States may use different itemization rules, deductions, credits, eligibility definitions, or reporting requirements. A state return may not follow the federal result automatically.
The cited IRS material includes Publication 526 and Publication 970 for 2025. Because the applicable law for a 2026 contribution may change, confirm current federal and state instructions before filing. For a large gift, a noncash contribution, a complex donor restriction, or uncertainty about the recipient’s status, obtain advice from a qualified tax professional.
