Are Credit Card Perks Worth It If You Carry a Balance?

Usually, no. If you revolve a credit-card balance, interest and fees will generally cost more than your rewards are worth. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says this is the usual market pattern, although it is not a guarantee for every account. Your result depends on the APR for each balance type, how quickly you repay, annual and transaction fees, the rewards you actually redeem, and whether new purchases are accruing interest.

Why carrying a balance usually defeats the perks

Rewards are valuable only after you account for the financing cost that produced them. The CFPB’s 2023 Consumer Credit Card Market Report, published in 2023 using primarily 2022 market data, states: “When a consumer revolves a balance on their credit card, the cost of interest and fees almost always exceeds the value of rewards the consumer may have earned.” That is a market-level conclusion, not a promise about your particular card.

Credit-card interest is normally quoted as an annual percentage rate (APR), but it is commonly accrued each day. A balance that remains outstanding for months can therefore consume the value of cash back, points, miles, or statement credits. An annual fee, balance-transfer fee, cash-advance fee, or other transaction charge increases the hurdle rewards must clear.

Perks can still have value when you use them—such as a benefit you would otherwise pay for—but count only the realistic value you receive. Do not increase spending merely to earn rewards; interest on the extra spending can overwhelm the reward.

What the CFPB’s market evidence shows

The figures below describe the U.S. credit-card market and are historical context from the 2023 report, not current quotes or forecasts for an individual account.

Measure Reported figure and scope
Interest and fees More than $130 billion paid in 2022 across credit cards.
Total cost of credit Almost 18% annualized for general-purpose cards and more than 21% for private-label accounts by the end of 2022.
Rewards earned More than $40 billion by mass-market general-purpose cardholders in 2022; the report’s detailed estimate is $41.1 billion.
Issuer-valued rewards rate 1.6 cents per dollar spent on rewards cards in 2021 and 2022, versus 1.4 cents in 2019 and 2020. Issuer valuations exclude some non-pecuniary benefits and may differ from your redemption value.
Estimated cost reduction Rewards could reduce revolving cardholders’ cost of credit by about two percentage points in the market analysis. The effect varied by credit-score group and is not a likely personal offset.
Full-pay example A cardholder who charged $10,000 to a major issuer’s general-purpose card in 2022 and paid the bill in full received $135 more in rewards than interest and fees. This example does not describe someone carrying a balance.

The same report estimated that consumers with subprime and deep-subprime scores received annual rewards-to-balances value below one percentage point. Superprime consumers with higher purchase volumes saw almost a five-percentage-point reduction in cost when earned rewards were included. These are account-level market estimates, not an offer or prediction for your account.

How interest turns a reward into a loss

Daily accrual and average daily balances

Many issuers calculate interest daily using an average daily account balance. The statement and card agreement should identify the method and the APR for purchases, cash advances, balance transfers, and other categories. Because interest accrues over time, reducing the balance earlier generally reduces the number of days on which interest is charged. The CFPB explains that, when there is no grace period, “the sooner you pay off all or some of your balance, the less interest you will pay.” See its guidance on how credit-card interest is calculated.

Purchase grace periods

A grace period runs from the end of a billing cycle to the payment due date. Issuers are not required to provide one, although most cards offer a purchase grace period. Paying the full statement balance by the due date can avoid purchase interest when the agreement provides that protection.

If you do not pay the full balance, you may lose the purchase grace period. New purchases can then accrue interest from their transaction dates, and the loss can sometimes continue into the following month. Cash advances generally begin accruing interest on the transaction date. The exact rules are in your account agreement; the CFPB’s grace-period guidance explains the common structure.

How payments are applied

When a payment exceeds the minimum, the amount above the minimum generally goes first to the balance with the highest APR, then to balances in descending APR order. The issuer generally decides how the minimum-payment portion is allocated. This matters when purchase, cash-advance, and transfer balances carry different rates: paying more than the minimum can direct extra money toward the costliest debt, but you should confirm the allocation terms in your agreement.

Calculate your own net value before chasing perks

The CFPB does not prescribe a personal rewards formula or assign a fixed value to non-cash benefits. A practical comparison method is to calculate the value you actually receive and subtract every cost attributable to carrying the account:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Net value = redeemed cash or realistic redeemed value of points and miles + benefits you actually use − annual fees − transaction fees − interest attributable to the balance − other account costs.

Use redeemed value rather than an issuer’s advertised maximum. A point is worth what you can reasonably obtain for the redemption you would make, not a theoretical travel value you will not use. Include only benefits you would otherwise purchase or genuinely use; a rarely used insurance feature has little or no personal value.

Gather the numbers

  1. Read the latest statement and agreement for the purchase, transfer, cash-advance, and penalty APRs; current balance; minimum payment; annual fee; and other charges.
  2. Check whether you currently have a purchase grace period and whether new charges accrue interest from the transaction date.
  3. List rewards actually redeemed during the period and assign a conservative dollar value to points or miles you redeemed.
  4. Estimate interest using the issuer’s stated method and your planned payoff timing. If you cannot determine it, ask the issuer for the payoff amount and interest explanation rather than assuming a headline APR tells the whole story.
  5. Subtract fees and interest from rewards and usable benefits. Compare that result with a lower-rate or no-rewards option using the same spending and repayment plan.

This calculation is an editorial decision aid, not a CFPB formula. It cannot produce a reliable answer without your balance, APRs, fees, repayment plan, and actual redemption values.

An illustrative calculation

Suppose—purely as an example—you redeem $180 in cash back and use $40 of benefits during a year. If the account charges a $95 annual fee, $30 in transfer or other transaction fees, and $260 in interest, the net value is $180 + $40 − $95 − $30 − $260 = −$165. The numbers are hypothetical; replace them with your statements. A negative result means the perks did not cover the account’s costs.

When a balance transfer may reduce the damage

A balance transfer moves an outstanding balance to another card. It can reduce interest temporarily, but it is a debt-management tool—not a rewards strategy—and approval or savings is never guaranteed.

Check Why it matters
Transfer fee A percentage or fixed fee is added to the amount you must repay, reducing the savings from a low promotional rate.
Promotion length Zero- or low-rate offers last for a limited period. Calculate the payment needed to clear the transferred balance before it ends.
Post-promotion APR Any remaining balance can become expensive once the promotional term expires.
Eligibility and limit The issuer may approve a smaller limit than requested or decline the transfer, so do not build a plan around unconfirmed approval.
Late-payment risk The CFPB says that if you are more than 60 days late, the issuer can increase the rate on all balances, including a transferred balance.
New purchases Purchases on the transfer card may have a different APR or grace-period treatment. Avoid adding spending until the repayment plan is secure.

Compare the transfer fee plus all expected interest with the cost of leaving the balance where it is. Divide the amount to be repaid—including the fee—by the number of promotional months to set a realistic monthly target. If that payment is not affordable, the promotion may postpone rather than solve the debt.

A payoff-first decision process

  1. Stop using rewards as a reason to spend. Keep necessary purchases within a budget and avoid cash advances.
  2. Protect your payment history. Pay at least the minimum by the due date while directing every affordable extra dollar to the highest-APR balance.
  3. Pay earlier when possible. Because interest may accrue daily, an extra payment before the due date can reduce the balance used in the issuer’s calculation.
  4. Review the agreement and statements monthly. Look for changed APRs, fees, grace-period status, and separate balance categories. The CFPB explains that issuers can change account terms in some circumstances; see its account-terms guidance.
  5. Shop for a lower APR if repayment is slow. Compare rates, fees, and eligibility rather than focusing on rewards. The CFPB recommends avoiding high-APR transactions and paying more than the minimum when possible.
  6. Reassess perks only after the balance is paid in full. A rewards card is most valuable when you can pay the statement balance on time and preserve the purchase grace period.

Compare two cards using the same facts

If you are deciding whether to keep a rewards card or move to a lower-cost account, compare these items side by side:

Comparison axis What to record
APR by balance type Purchase, cash-advance, transfer, and penalty rates shown in the agreement.
Payoff horizon Current balance and the date you realistically expect to reach zero.
Grace-period status Whether full payment restores or preserves the purchase grace period and how new charges are treated.
Fees Annual, transfer, cash-advance, late, foreign-transaction, and other applicable charges.
Reward value Rewards earned and actually redeemed, not an advertised maximum.
Usable benefits The conservative value of protections or credits you genuinely use.
Transfer terms Fee, promotional duration, post-promotional APR, approved amount, and repayment schedule.

If the lower-rate account saves more interest than the rewards and benefits you would forgo, it is the stronger financial choice even if its rewards rate is zero. Keep enough available credit and cash flow to avoid replacing one balance with another.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Counting earned points as cash. Unredeemed points can lose value, expire, or be subject to program changes. Use the value you actually receive.
  • Ignoring the grace-period reset. Carrying a balance can make new purchases interest-bearing from the transaction date; verify the agreement before using the card for routine spending.
  • Comparing only advertised APRs. Separate rates and fees apply to transfers and cash advances, and the daily-balance method affects the dollars charged.
  • Paying only the minimum while pursuing a bonus. A sign-up reward does not compensate for months of high interest if the spending creates a larger balance.
  • Assuming a transfer is free. Include the transfer fee, the post-promotion rate, and the payment required to finish on time.
  • Missing a due date. Late payments can add fees and, after more than 60 days in the transfer situation described by the CFPB, trigger a higher rate on all balances.
  • Treating market averages as a personal quote. The CFPB figures are U.S. market evidence through 2022, not a current APR survey or an individual forecast.

When to seek repayment help

If payments barely cover interest or the balance continues to grow, prioritize a sustainable debt plan over card perks. A nonprofit credit-counseling or debt-management-plan service may be worth investigating, but verify its accreditation, services, fees, and current terms before enrolling. Do not pay an upfront fee or surrender control of accounts without understanding exactly what the service does.

Contact the issuer early if you expect to miss a payment. Ask about hardship options, reduced rates, or a structured repayment arrangement, and get any agreement in writing. These options can affect account status and credit access, so weigh the terms against your ability to repay.

Bottom line for a cardholder carrying a balance

For most people who revolve a balance, credit-card perks are not worth the interest and fees they generate. The CFPB’s U.S. market evidence supports that conclusion, while your own statement determines the exact result. Calculate redeemed rewards and usable benefits, subtract daily-accruing interest and every applicable fee, and compare that net figure with a lower-APR payoff strategy. Until the balance is paid in full—or a demonstrably cheaper repayment plan is in place—treat rewards as secondary to reducing the debt.
