Are Contra Funds Suitable for SIP Investing? A Practical Suitability Guide

Yes, a SIP can be used to invest in a contra fund, but the SIP does not make the fund safe, predictable or automatically suitable. A contra fund is an equity mutual fund that deliberately invests against prevailing market sentiment, usually buying stocks or sectors it believes are undervalued or temporarily out of favour. The strategy may take years to work, may lag the broader market, and can be wrong.

A contra-fund SIP is most defensible for a long-term goal, an investor who can tolerate substantial equity losses and uneven performance, and money that will not be needed soon. It is a poor match for a near-term goal, low volatility tolerance or anyone who treats a SIP as a return guarantee.

What is a contra fund?

AMFI describes contra funds as “equity mutual funds that take a contrarian view on the market.” Instead of simply following the most popular sectors or stocks, the fund manager looks for areas that the market currently dislikes, has overlooked or has priced pessimistically.

The manager’s thesis might be that a temporarily weak business can recover, an unpopular sector can return to favour, or a company trading below an estimate of its long-term value can eventually be re-rated. The portfolio therefore may look very different from the broad market while the investment case develops.

That difference is central to suitability. A contra fund is not merely a diversified equity fund with a different label. Its returns depend on the manager correctly judging both the underlying investment and the timing of a change in market perception.

Why the strategy can lag

Unpopular investments can remain unpopular for a long time. A company may have deeper operational problems than expected, a sector may face a structural decline, or investors may continue to prefer other parts of the market. During a strong, momentum-led bull market, a contra portfolio can trail funds holding the market’s current leaders.

AMFI warns that these funds carry the risk of getting their calls wrong because it is not possible to catch a trend before the herd in every market cycle. It also notes that contra funds typically underperform in a bull market. That is a normal strategy risk, not evidence that a SIP has failed.

What does a SIP change—and what does it not change?

A systematic investment plan is a payment and purchase method. You instruct the mutual-fund platform or asset-management company to invest a chosen amount at a chosen frequency. Each instalment buys units at the applicable net asset value, so the number of units purchased changes as the unit price moves.

The SIP schedule does not alter the fund’s investment objective, holdings, benchmark, riskometer or management approach. A monthly payment into a contra fund is still an investment in a contrarian equity portfolio.

Feature What the SIP can do What it cannot do
Timing Spread purchases over multiple dates rather than committing all money at once Ensure that every purchase is made at a low price
Behaviour Create a repeatable contribution habit Remove equity-market losses or guarantee a profit
Strategy Build exposure gradually to the selected scheme Change the fund’s contrarian stock and sector selection
Risk Reduce dependence on one entry date Eliminate the risk of wrong calls, concentration or prolonged underperformance

Regular investing can make it easier to continue through market declines, but continuing contributions while a strategy is out of favour requires conviction and financial capacity. If you may need to stop or withdraw during a drawdown, the payment schedule has not solved the underlying suitability problem.

When can a contra-fund SIP be suitable?

You have a genuinely long investment horizon

Contrarian ideas need time to play out. The market may take several years to recognise improving earnings, a repaired balance sheet or a change in industry conditions. A goal that is close enough to require selling on a particular date leaves little room for that thesis to recover.

Define the goal date before starting. If the money is earmarked for an expense in the near term, an equity strategy whose returns can diverge sharply from the broad market is usually a weak fit. A longer horizon does not guarantee a positive outcome, but it gives the investment thesis more opportunity to develop and gives you more time to withstand interim losses.

You can tolerate losses and periods of disappointment

Ask how you would respond if the fund fell substantially, missed its benchmark for several review periods or remained out of favour while other equity funds performed better. A suitable investor can continue a carefully chosen plan without abandoning it solely because the latest return is disappointing.

Risk tolerance is practical, not theoretical. It includes your emergency reserve, income stability, debt obligations and ability to keep investing after a market decline. If a loss would force you to sell, the fund is probably too aggressive for that money.

You understand what you own

You should be able to explain the fund’s stated objective, the kinds of contrarian opportunities it seeks and the risks disclosed for the specific scheme. Read the Scheme Information Document and Key Information Memorandum rather than relying only on the category name.

The fund has a clear role in your portfolio

Consider whether the contra allocation adds a distinct source of exposure or simply duplicates stocks and sectors already held through other funds. A second fund is not automatically diversification if both portfolios own many of the same companies. Use the scheme’s current portfolio disclosure to check overlap, concentration and the size of the allocation you are considering.

When is a contra-fund SIP a poor fit?

  • A near-term or date-sensitive goal: You may not have time to wait for a contrarian thesis to recover.
  • Low tolerance for equity volatility: The fund can fall with the market and also lag it while its positions remain unpopular.
  • A need for predictable cash flow: Equity mutual funds do not provide a guaranteed return or a guaranteed value at a future date.
  • Dependence on a single fund: Concentrating your entire long-term equity allocation in one manager or one style increases strategy risk.
  • Inability to review the scheme: If you cannot check objective, portfolio, costs and disclosures, you may not know whether it still fits.
  • A belief that SIP means safety: Instalments manage the contribution pattern, not the risk of the underlying securities.

How to evaluate a contra fund before starting a SIP

Use the actual scheme documents and current disclosures. Category-level descriptions are not enough because two funds labelled contra can differ in portfolio construction, concentration, turnover, costs and benchmark.

  1. Read the objective and investment policy. Confirm that the scheme actually follows a contrarian approach and understand any flexibility over sectors, market capitalisation or cash.
  2. Check the riskometer and scheme-specific risks. SEBI’s offer-document framework requires the objective, investment policy and scheme risks to be disclosed. Treat those disclosures as decision information, not boilerplate.
  3. Inspect the current portfolio. Note the largest holdings, sector weights, exposure to smaller companies and concentration in the top positions. Identify whether the portfolio is genuinely different from funds you already own.
  4. Review the benchmark and performance history across varied conditions. Look at periods that include rising markets, falling markets and extended sideways or style-unfriendly phases. Historical performance describes what happened; it is not a forecast.
  5. Compare costs for the plan you will use. Check the current expense ratio and any other applicable scheme charges in the official disclosure. A cost difference compounds over time, especially when expected returns are uncertain.
  6. Assess portfolio overlap. Compare the fund’s current holdings with your other equity schemes. A fund that appears different by name may still hold many of the same companies.
  7. Set a review rule before investing. Decide which changes would justify reassessment, such as a change in objective, a persistent and unexplained shift in portfolio construction or a goal timeline that has moved closer. Do not replace a written rule with reactions to a single month or quarter.

Do not select a scheme solely because it recently topped a return table. A period in which contrarian holdings rebound can make the strategy look unusually attractive; that result may not repeat when market leadership changes.

Direct plan or regular plan?

Direct and regular plans of the same mutual-fund scheme share the portfolio and fund manager, but they have different expense ratios. AMFI describes the direct plan as intended for investors who can research and transact independently. A regular plan includes distributor involvement and may be useful when you want help with selection, paperwork or ongoing service.

Decision factor Direct plan Regular plan
Underlying portfolio Same scheme portfolio as the corresponding regular plan Same scheme portfolio as the corresponding direct plan
Expense ratio Different from the regular plan; check the current figure Different from the direct plan; check the current figure
Support You research and transact independently Distributor support may be available
How to choose Consider if you can manage selection, monitoring and transactions yourself Consider whether the service justifies the additional cost for you

Do not choose solely on the word “direct.” The relevant comparison is the current cost difference weighed against the value of assistance you will actually use. Confirm plan details on the fund house’s official documents before setting up the SIP.

How to set up and manage the investment responsibly

Before the first instalment

  • Separate emergency money and near-term goal money from long-term equity capital.
  • Choose an instalment amount that remains affordable if income falls or markets decline.
  • Record the goal, target date, expected use of the money and the fund’s intended portfolio role.
  • Read the latest Scheme Information Document, Key Information Memorandum, riskometer and portfolio disclosure.
  • Confirm the bank mandate, instalment date, plan type and the scheme selected before authorising recurring debits.

While the SIP is running

  • Keep contributions aligned with the goal rather than increasing them because of a recent return.
  • Review official portfolio and performance information at a planned interval, not after every market headline.
  • Check whether the fund’s holdings still match its stated objective and your intended role.
  • Reassess if your goal date, income security or ability to tolerate losses changes.

As the goal approaches

Time risk becomes more important as the withdrawal date nears. A fall shortly before the money is needed can be more damaging than the same fall many years earlier. Plan how and when you will reduce exposure or move money for the goal, using the applicable scheme and tax rules rather than waiting for a crisis.

Can you lose money in a contra-fund SIP?

Yes. The value of the units can fall, and you can receive less than you invested if you sell after a decline. A SIP does not protect principal. It buys units at multiple prices, but every purchase remains exposed to the securities and risks held by the fund.

Loss can arise from a wrong company-level call, a sector remaining weak, a broad equity-market decline, concentration in a few holdings or a long period in which the fund’s style is out of favour. A diversified portfolio can spread some company-specific risk, but it cannot remove equity risk or guarantee recovery.

How should you compare a contra fund with another equity option?

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Investment approach Is the scheme explicitly contrarian, or does the alternative follow a different stated strategy?
Risk and patience Can you accept wrong calls, uneven results and possible lag in a rising market?
Portfolio role Does it diversify your existing holdings or repeat them?
Costs and service What are the current direct and regular expense ratios, and do you need distributor support?
Evidence How has each option behaved across different market conditions relative to its official benchmark?

Make the comparison against the alternative scheme’s own objective, risk disclosures and portfolio—not against a generic expectation that one category should always win. There is no source-backed performance figure that can predict which approach will deliver better future returns.

A decision checklist

  • My goal is long term and the date is flexible enough to withstand equity volatility.
  • I have emergency savings and will not need this money to meet near-term expenses.
  • I understand that contrarian calls can be wrong and that the fund may lag in a bull market.
  • I have checked the current objective, riskometer, benchmark, holdings and concentration.
  • I have compared the fund with my existing investments for overlap.
  • I know whether I am selecting a direct or regular plan and why.
  • I have a review and de-risking plan that is not based on short-term headlines.

If several answers are “no,” the problem is not the SIP frequency. Reconsider the amount, the fund’s role or whether an equity contra strategy belongs in this goal at all.
