What Splitwise does
Splitwise keeps shared bills and IOUs in groups or one-to-one friendships. It shows who owes whom, totals balances and can simplify debts among group members.
Users can allocate a bill equally or unevenly with percentages, shares, exact amounts or adjustments. Recurring bills can be scheduled, and users can log cash or online payments. Splitwise Pay, its wallet for sending money to friends, is available in the United States.
Fees and plans
The free tier has no charge and covers core splitting for up to four expenses each day, with ads and feature limits.
Monthly Pro billing is $4.99, while annual billing is $39.99. Both provide unlimited expenses, transaction import, currency conversion, receipt scanning and itemization, charts, search and an ad-free experience. The annual plan is billed yearly; the monthly plan is billed monthly.
Other listings show Individual + Trip Pass and Duo + Trip Pass plans, but no prices. The first includes all Pro features and one annual Trip Pass; the second covers two people. A Monthly subscription listing has no price. A separate Splitwise Pro listing says price on request and includes default split settings; its transaction import is US only.
Where it runs
Splitwise offers Android, iPhone, web access and an API. Its mobile apps can add expenses without an internet connection, then sync the data online for access across devices.
Splitwise advertises coverage for over 100 currencies and at least seven languages. The API lets authorized third-party applications access account data. Published materials describe hosted web and mobile services, not a self-hosted package.
Protection, as Splitwise publishes it
Splitwise says it uses technical and administrative security measures, including encryption techniques and authentication procedures, to protect online sessions. It says Plaid handles linked-account data and that third-party API access requires consent.
Expenses are private rather than public; people see details only when they belong to the friends or groups sharing them. Google Play's developer declaration says Android data is encrypted in transit, no data is shared with third parties, and users can request deletion.
The company says data may be processed for fraud, security and regulatory purposes. It offers email support and aims to answer most requests within one business day. Splitwise describes expense, IOU, debt and payment entries as informal records without legal force.
Strengths
The service handles many group situations, including trips, households and families, with flexible split methods and recurring schedules. Balances and repayment obligations are kept together, and debt simplification can reduce the number of settlements.
For Pro users, record-keeping includes US card-import capability, photographed-receipt line detection, conversion at current foreign-exchange rates, spending charts, historical lookup and reusable allocation rules.
Catches and limits
The free tier is capped at four expenses per day and comes with ads or other feature limits. Several plan names have no published price, and Splitwise does not state a cash-out fee amount; its cash-out model is variable.
Only US Pro users can import card transactions. Splitwise Pay is US-only, while listed payment integrations include Venmo and PayPal in the United States and Paytm in India. Splitwise does not support international transfers.
The self-serve API targets hobbyist or internal projects, bars fee-based commercial services, uses conservative limits that can change and may require Pro. Its licence is revocable, non-transferable and non-sublicensable, with restrictions on competing apps and reverse engineering. Splitwise says its service is not for children under 13.
Who should skip Splitwise
It may not fit people who need legally binding payment records, international transfers or a self-hosted deployment. Users outside the United States who need card imports or Splitwise Pay also face stated limits.
Verdict
Splitwise is suited to groups maintaining a shared ledger for bills, IOUs and repayments, particularly when participants use different cost proportions or multiple currencies. The free plan covers basic tracking but imposes a daily entry limit and ads. Pro is the paid route for unlimited entries and added records such as receipt itemization, card imports and charts, although card imports and Splitwise Pay are restricted to the United States. People needing formal legal records, international transfers or commercial API use should look elsewhere.
