What FOSSBilling does
FOSSBilling provides billing and client administration for hosting providers and digital-service businesses. It generates invoices, sends payment reminders, and supports recurring or one-time charges, multiple currencies, exchange-rate synchronization and promo codes.
Through supported control panels, hosting products can automatically create and manage accounts. Registrar integrations let domain products process registrations, renewals, transfers and WHOIS availability checks.
Fees and plans
FOSSBilling and its core software are free, open source and self-hosted. Usage-based billing is marked as planned rather than available.
There is no free trial because the published model is a free plan rather than a trial. Domain prices are entered manually for each top-level domain; live registrar pricing is not retrieved.
Where it runs
FOSSBilling operates as self-hosted Linux software through a browser and REST API. The documented setup calls for PHP 8.3, 8.4 or 8.5, a MySQL-compatible database, and Apache, LiteSpeed/OpenLiteSpeed or NGINX.
The published platforms do not list an iPhone, Android or desktop app. Its JSON API groups endpoints for administrators, clients and guests. API authentication uses HTTP Basic Authentication with a username and API key.
Protection, as published
Published controls include HTTPS enforcement, secure cookies, session controls, session fingerprinting, CSRF protection, rate limiting, IP restrictions, role-based permissions, CAPTCHA and activity logs. The antispam module offers reCAPTCHA, Cloudflare Turnstile, hCaptcha, disposable-email blocking and IP blocking.
Multi-factor authentication is listed for before version 1.0, but it is not currently available. The homepage states that the code is licensed under AGPL 3.0; the published facts note a discrepancy with the repository license file.
With self-hosting, the operator controls data, infrastructure, backups and security policies. FOSSBilling is described as beta and under active development, and its FAQ recommends backups and staging tests.
Strengths
Invoices, reminders, recurring and one-time billing, currency handling, promotions, hosting provisioning and domain workflows are brought together in one open-source system.
An extension architecture allows installation of themes, modules, payment gateways, server managers and domain registrars. Listed payment adapters include PayPal, Stripe, Mollie and Razorpay, with documentation advising tests before production use.
The REST API exposes administrator, authenticated-client and public guest endpoints, and its documentation demonstrates calls in cURL, Python and Node.js.
Catches to check
This self-hosted software requires the operator to supply the supported PHP version, database, web server, backups and security controls. It remains beta, with rough edges and limited support while progressing toward version 1.0.
Existing control-panel accounts cannot be imported, and clients do not receive single sign-on to control panels. The hosting documentation notes a minor package-sync bug with Plesk.
Domain prices are manual rather than live. DNS management is still under consideration. Multi-factor authentication is not available yet, and usage-based billing is planned rather than published as a current feature.
Who should skip FOSSBilling
FOSSBilling may not fit a business seeking a hosted service, a phone app, automatic registrar pricing, account imports, control-panel single sign-on or current multi-factor authentication.
Verdict
FOSSBilling suits hosting and digital-service operators who can run Linux-based self-hosted software and manage its infrastructure. Its free AGPL-licensed core covers invoices, reminders, recurring and one-time charges, currencies, promotions, hosting control panels, domains and APIs.
Teams wanting a managed platform, mobile apps, imported control-panel accounts, single sign-on, live registrar prices or multi-factor authentication today may find it less suitable. The beta status, manual domain pricing and need to test payment adapters matter when judging operational fit.
Who it suits
Pick it if
- Hosting providers running their own Linux infrastructure
- Digital-service businesses needing open-source billing
- Teams able to test beta software and payment adapters
Skip it if
- You need a managed service or iPhone/Android app
- You require account imports, single sign-on or current MFA
- You need live registrar pricing or usage billing now
