Apple Q4 2025 results: What the iPhone 17 launch, tariffs and China revealed

Apple’s Q4 2025 report is now historical: the company released results on October 30, 2025, for the quarter ended September 27. Apple reported $102.5 billion in revenue and adjusted diluted earnings per share of $1.85, slightly above the pre-release LSEG consensus of about $102.17 billion and $1.77, respectively. The bigger investor story was its outlook for the December quarter: revenue growth of approximately 10% to 12% and double-digit iPhone growth.

The report showed a strong global September quarter, but it did not remove Apple’s main risks. Greater China declined, tariffs remained costly, and Apple’s AI strategy still lacked a clearly quantified near-term financial contribution.

What Apple reported

Metric Pre-release expectation Actual result
Revenue Approximately $102.17 billion, according to LSEG estimates cited by Reuters $102.5 billion
Adjusted diluted EPS Approximately $1.77 $1.85
Fiscal-year revenue — $416 billion
iPhone Investors expected the iPhone 17 launch to improve momentum September-quarter revenue record
Services Expected to remain a major growth and margin contributor All-time revenue record

Apple also declared a $0.26-per-share dividend, payable November 13, 2025, to shareholders of record on November 10. The company said its installed base had reached record levels across product categories and geographic segments.

Q4 does not mean Apple’s holiday quarter

Apple’s fiscal calendar differs from the calendar year. Q4 FY2025 was the September quarter and ended September 27, 2025. The December quarter is Apple’s fiscal Q1 2026 and is generally the company’s holiday quarter.

That distinction mattered because the iPhone 17 family launched close to the end of the reported quarter. Q4 captured only the opening portion of the product cycle. The December-quarter outlook therefore offered a more complete test of demand than the September-quarter revenue alone.

The iPhone 17 cycle was the central product question

Before the report, investors wanted to know whether the iPhone 17 lineup—including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air—would produce a stronger upgrade cycle.

The key questions were whether Apple could:

  • Increase upgrades after the prior iPhone cycle;
  • Improve average selling prices through premium models and product mix;
  • Convert strong interest into shipments despite supply constraints; and
  • Build momentum that would continue beyond the launch window.

Apple said iPhone revenue reached a September-quarter record. That is a positive result, but it should not be treated as a full-quarter measurement of iPhone 17 demand. A supply-constrained launch can also blur the difference between weak demand and sales deferred because Apple could not immediately fulfill orders.

Management’s subsequent forecast for double-digit year-over-year iPhone growth in the December quarter was more important than the small September-quarter revenue beat. It suggested that Apple expected the launch cycle to remain strong through the holiday period, although the forecast was management’s expectation rather than a guaranteed outcome.

Services remained an important earnings-quality signal

Services is closely watched because it provides recurring revenue from areas such as the App Store, advertising, subscriptions, cloud services and licensing. It also benefits from Apple’s large installed base.

Apple reported an all-time Services revenue record in Q4 FY2025. Secondary reporting placed quarterly Services revenue at approximately $28.8 billion, up about 15% year over year, and reported that Services exceeded $100 billion for the fiscal year.

Strong Services growth can make Apple’s overall results less dependent on a single hardware launch. It does not eliminate risk, however. App Store regulation and litigation could affect the economics of payments, commissions and distribution. Investors therefore need to track both Services growth and the regulatory pressure surrounding the business.

Greater China was the clearest regional weakness

Greater China was the only geographic segment reported as declining year over year. Reuters reporting placed revenue in the region at approximately $14.49 billion, below a cited analyst estimate of approximately $16.24 billion.

Apple faces several challenges in China, including competition from Huawei and other domestic brands, pricing pressure, local subsidy policies and the timing of product availability. Reports also linked some weakness to delayed availability of the iPhone Air in China.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company believed it would return to growth in China in the December quarter. That should be read as management guidance, not as evidence that the regional problem had already been solved. A global revenue record can coexist with a strategically important regional decline.

Tariffs affected both reported earnings and future margins

Apple said tariffs cost approximately $1.1 billion in the September quarter and expected the cost to rise to about $1.4 billion in the December quarter.

Those figures were estimates tied to the policy environment, sourcing mix, inventory timing and product geography. They should not automatically be treated as permanent quarterly expenses. Apple could respond through manufacturing changes, supplier negotiations, pricing, product mix, currency movements or a combination of those measures.

The more important question was how much of the tariff burden Apple would absorb. Absorbing the cost would pressure gross profit and potentially earnings; passing it to customers could protect margins but risk demand, particularly in price-sensitive markets.

Margins and EPS require careful interpretation

Apple guided to approximately 47% to 48% gross margin for the December quarter while discussing the expected tariff burden. Investors also had to separate several factors affecting profitability:

  • Product mix: Premium iPhones and Services can support the company-wide margin profile.
  • Launch costs: New-product introductions can affect costs and supply-chain efficiency.
  • Tariffs: Added import costs can reduce gross profit unless offset elsewhere.
  • Foreign exchange: Currency movements can affect reported growth and margins.
  • Tax effects: Comparisons can be distorted by one-time items.

Apple described the $1.85 figure as adjusted diluted EPS. Its comparison included an adjustment for a one-time tax charge related to the European General Court’s State Aid decision in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted EPS should not be compared directly with GAAP diluted EPS without accounting for that difference.

What AI meant for the earnings report

Apple’s AI strategy was a major investor concern, but it was not a separately reported Q4 revenue line. Investors were looking for evidence that Apple Intelligence could support device upgrades, strengthen Services and keep Apple competitive with larger AI-focused technology companies.

The most useful questions were strategic and operational:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which Apple Intelligence features were available on the newest devices and in which markets?
  • Had Apple provided a concrete timetable for delayed or expanded capabilities?
  • Could AI encourage users to upgrade hardware?
  • How much additional research, development and infrastructure spending would be required?
  • Did management see a path to AI-related Services monetization?

Unless Apple quantifies that contribution, it is not possible to attribute a specific amount of Q4 revenue or profit to AI. AI may be important to Apple’s long-term product strategy while remaining difficult to measure in near-term financial statements.

How the other categories fit together

Category What investors were watching Reported context
iPhone Strength of the iPhone 17 cycle, premium mix and supply constraints September-quarter revenue record; approximately $49.03 billion cited in post-release reporting
Services Subscription, advertising, App Store and installed-base monetization All-time revenue record; approximately $28.8 billion cited in post-release reporting
Mac Effect of product refreshes and replacement demand Approximately $8.7 billion cited in post-release reporting
iPad Refresh-driven growth and demand normalization Included in Apple’s product-category reporting
Wearables, Home and Accessories Product-cycle timing and consumer discretionary demand More exposed to launch timing than Services
Greater China Competition, availability and return to growth Only geographic segment reported as declining year over year

The category figures above should be read alongside Apple’s official financial tables; rounded figures reported by secondary sources can differ slightly from the company’s filing presentation.

Why the December-quarter outlook mattered most

A modest beat against consensus can matter less than the next quarter’s outlook. Apple’s December-quarter guidance called for:

  • Revenue growth of approximately 10% to 12% year over year;
  • Double-digit year-over-year iPhone growth;
  • Gross margin of approximately 47% to 48%; and
  • Approximately $1.4 billion in tariff-related costs.

This guidance was stronger than many investors feared and became a central reason the report was viewed positively. It also raised the execution standard for the holiday quarter. Strong guidance may already be reflected in the share price, and any shortfall in iPhone shipments, margins or China could matter more than the September-quarter beat.

How to evaluate the report beyond “beat” or “miss”

  1. Compare revenue and EPS with a named consensus. The cited LSEG figures were approximately $102.17 billion of revenue and $1.77 of EPS. Estimates from Yahoo Finance, FactSet, Visible Alpha and other providers may differ because of methodology and cutoff time.
  2. Separate demand from shipments. Supply constraints may indicate unmet demand rather than weak interest, but investors need evidence about orders, backlog and fulfillment.
  3. Check the iPhone mix. Growth driven by premium models and pricing has different implications from growth driven mainly by unit volume.
  4. Track Services quality. Growth should be assessed alongside regulatory risk and the durability of subscriptions, advertising and other recurring revenue.
  5. Measure China independently. Global strength does not make a regional decline immaterial.
  6. Model tariffs through margins. Compare the expected $1.4 billion December-quarter burden with pricing, sourcing and mix offsets.
  7. Treat AI as an execution question. Do not convert general AI commentary into quantified revenue without explicit company disclosure.
  8. Focus on fiscal periods. Fiscal 2025 revenue of $416 billion is not calendar-year 2025 revenue.

Investor takeaway

Apple’s Q4 FY2025 results were stronger than the pre-release consensus and showed record September-quarter iPhone revenue, record Services revenue and $416 billion of fiscal-year sales. Operationally, the report was better than feared.

But the small headline beat was not the whole story. The investment case remained dependent on whether iPhone 17 momentum continued into the holiday quarter, whether Apple could offset rising tariff costs, whether Greater China returned to growth as management expected, and whether its AI strategy translated into future product demand. For investors assessing the report, December-quarter execution mattered more than the size of the September-quarter beat.
