Apple May Absorb Most Tariff Costs—but That Doesn’t Mean Prices Won’t Rise

The headline came from a real April 9, 2025 analyst forecast—not an Apple pricing announcement. Jeff Pu of GF Securities estimated that Apple might raise prices by roughly 3%–6% globally or 10%–19% in the U.S., while absorbing most of the tariff burden itself. Apple’s later disclosures show a more complicated result involving margins, sourcing changes, tariff refunds, product mix and possible future price pressure.

What the analyst actually predicted

In a report covered by 9to5Mac on April 9, 2025, GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu outlined two possible pricing scenarios:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Global prices: an increase of approximately 3%–6%.
  • U.S. prices: an increase of approximately 10%–19%.

Pu’s central argument was that Apple would absorb most tariff costs because its suppliers had limited room to accept lower margins while also facing higher production expenses. “Absorb most” did not mean absorb all of the cost, however. It could mean accepting lower gross margins, negotiating with suppliers, changing product mix, reducing promotions, shifting sourcing or raising prices selectively.

Those figures were scenarios from an analyst, not prices Apple announced. They should not be presented as a promise that every iPhone, Mac or iPad would become 3%–6% or 10%–19% more expensive.

  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

How Apple can absorb part of the cost

Apple has more flexibility than many companies because of its scale, profitability, services business and large installed base. It can temporarily accept a margin hit, adjust inventory timing, change manufacturing locations and spread a U.S.-specific cost across products or markets.

Apple can also increase its average selling price without applying the same increase to every base model. It might emphasize Pro models, higher-storage configurations, accessories or premium bundles while leaving an entry-level product’s headline price unchanged.

That flexibility does not make tariffs economically irrelevant. A recurring tariff is an ongoing supply-chain cost. If prices stay fixed and suppliers do not concede enough, Apple’s gross margin falls. If Apple protects its margin, customers may eventually see higher prices, fewer promotions or more expensive accessories.

Why price increases could still happen

Suppliers may have little ability to absorb additional costs if their own margins are already thin. Tariffs can also affect components, replacement parts and accessories differently from finished flagship products. In May 2025, Tim Cook said Apple had “nothing to announce at this time” regarding tariff-related price increases, while explaining that exposure varied by product and sourcing location. TechCrunch reported that accessories and AppleCare-related spare parts were among the more affected categories at that point.

Apple may make changes at a product refresh, when customers already expect new features and comparisons with the previous generation are less direct. It could also preserve a starting price while changing storage tiers, reducing discounts or altering trade-in and financing offers.

Tariffs are not the only possible cause of a later price change. Apple separately identifies rising costs for advanced semiconductors, NAND storage and DRAM as business risks in its SEC filing. Currency movements, redesigns, new features, demand management and AI-related hardware costs can also affect pricing. A higher price alone does not prove that tariffs caused it.

What Apple paid and said in 2025

Apple estimated approximately $900 million in tariff-related costs for one quarter in May 2025, based on tariff policies then in effect. In July 2025, it projected approximately $1.1 billion in tariff costs for the following quarter. These were estimates based on the policies and rates known at those dates, not permanent annual costs.

The figures demonstrate why Apple could face pressure even if it did not immediately change retail prices. The company could choose to absorb the expense, seek supplier concessions, alter sourcing or wait for greater clarity before adjusting its product lineup.

Not every Apple product faces the same exposure

iPhone

iPhone exposure depends on assembly country, component origin, destination market and tariff classification. Apple had been increasing the share of U.S.-bound iPhones sourced from India rather than China. A later Morgan Stanley scenario modeled India supplying at least 60% of U.S. iPhone demand in 2026, with China focused primarily on higher-end, higher-storage models. Even that scenario left an estimated $7 billion–$8 billion in tariff costs before possible supplier sharing. That was an analyst model, not an Apple-reported expense.

Moving assembly does not eliminate the issue: an iPhone assembled in India can still contain components made elsewhere, and trade policies can change.

Mac, iPad and Apple Watch

These products use different assembly locations and component mixes. Apple said in 2025 that a larger portion of Macs was coming from Vietnam, while China-made products were largely directed to customers outside the United States. Such changes can reduce exposure in particular markets but cannot guarantee immunity from tariffs affecting Vietnam, China, component exporters or other jurisdictions.

Accessories and repairs

Cases, chargers, replacement parts and service-related hardware can experience different costs from the flagship device. An unchanged iPhone price therefore does not show that the entire Apple ecosystem avoided tariff pressure. Consumers may feel the effect through accessories, repairs, AppleCare-related costs or reduced promotions.

What Apple’s 2026 disclosures changed

Apple’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-Q says new U.S. tariffs affected imports from China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, the European Union and other jurisdictions. It also says Apple was applying for refunds after a February 20, 2026 Supreme Court ruling invalidated certain tariffs imposed under IEEPA.

The ruling did not eliminate all tariff risk. Apple warned that Section 122, Section 232, Section 301, sector-based or retaliatory measures could still apply. The ultimate effect depends on rates, duration, scope, supply-chain changes and possible retaliation. Apple specifically identified potential effects on pricing, gross margin, product availability and consumer sentiment.

Apple’s fiscal third-quarter 2026 results show why the story cannot be reduced to sticker prices. The company reported:

  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Product may come in generic Box.
  • $109.4 billion in revenue, up 16% year over year;
  • 50.1% gross margin;
  • approximately two percentage points of gross-margin benefit from tariff refunds; and
  • a $0.11 diluted-EPS benefit from those refunds.

These results do not prove that tariffs had no consumer effect. They show that refunds materially influenced the quarter and that Apple’s financial outcome depends on more than its official retail prices. The latest cited results were reported in July 2026 and should not be confused with a guarantee about future quarters.

How shoppers should interpret Apple prices

As of the latest cited Apple store information, U.S. prices remain the practical reference point—not an analyst’s tariff model. Apple’s Mac store lists the MacBook Neo from $699, MacBook Air from $1,299, MacBook Pro from $1,999 and Mac mini from $799. Those prices show what Apple was charging, but they do not prove whether tariffs did or did not influence them.

Also watch the effective cost rather than only the advertised starting price:

  • Storage tiers: Apple can change the value or pricing of higher-capacity models.
  • Trade-in values: A strong trade-in can offset a price increase, while a lower valuation can effectively raise the cost.
  • Carrier promotions: Credits may depend on eligibility, activation, plan requirements and lock-in periods.
  • Accessories and repairs: These can change independently of a phone or computer’s list price.
  • Financing and leasing: A higher monthly payment may make a price increase less visible without making the device cheaper.

Buy now, wait or choose another route?

Buy now if you need the device

If you need a phone or computer immediately, use the current confirmed price and compare trade-in, carrier and education offers. A future increase remains uncertain, while the cost of going without the device is immediate.

Wait if you are close to a normal product refresh

Waiting may make sense if a major launch is expected soon and your current device works well. You may gain new hardware, see the current model discounted or decide that the new features justify the price. Do not wait solely because an old analyst scenario guarantees a particular increase; it does not.

Consider refurbished hardware

Apple Certified Refurbished products can reduce the upfront cost and may make tariff uncertainty less important, especially when the previous generation meets your needs. Apple says its Certified Refurbished products include a one-year warranty. The trade-off is potentially shorter remaining support life and missing newer chips, cameras, displays, modems or features.

Compare trade-in and private-sale value

Apple Trade In is convenient, but its estimate may be lower than a private sale and depends on model, condition and verification. Compare the net cost after trade-in rather than assuming the advertised credit is the best available value.

Be cautious with monthly payments

Apple’s U.S. Apple Upgrade program, introduced in July 2026, covers eligible iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac and iPad products through 12-, 24- or 36-month terms depending on the product. Apple describes it as a consumer lease, not a purchase or loan. An example lists an iPhone 17 Pro 256GB at a $1,099 purchase price, or $31.99 per month for 24 months or $45.99 for 12 months, excluding taxes and trade-in credit. Early termination can involve substantial fees, and iPhone leasing requires an eligible carrier.

Leasing can suit someone who values predictable payments and frequent upgrades. It is less attractive for someone who keeps devices for many years and wants to own the hardware immediately. Apple Card Monthly Installments, where available and subject to eligibility, can spread an eligible purchase at 0% APR, but financing changes cash flow—not the underlying price.

Bottom line

Jeff Pu’s April 2025 forecast was that Apple would absorb most tariff costs while still potentially raising prices by 3%–6% globally or 10%–19% in the United States. Those numbers were estimates, not Apple’s announced plans.

By 2026, Apple had shown that it could offset or defer some tariff costs through sourcing changes, margin management and refunds. But its filings also confirm continuing uncertainty and separate cost pressures from components and manufacturing. Apple may protect a product’s sticker price while passing pressure through margins, accessories, repairs, storage tiers, promotions or monthly payments.

For shoppers, the sensible approach is to buy based on the confirmed price, current trade-in or promotional value and product-cycle timing. Treat future tariff-driven increases as possible—not certain—and check Apple’s official store and program terms before committing.
