Apple Laid Off 614 California Employees After Ending Its Car and Display Projects

Apple’s California WARN filings covered 614 permanent layoffs at eight locations in Santa Clara, California. Employees were notified on March 28, 2024, and the layoffs were scheduled to take effect on May 27, 2024.

The cuts followed Apple’s reported cancellation of Project Titan, its long-running electric-car initiative, and an in-house next-generation display project. However, the filings did not establish that every affected employee worked on the car program.

The short answer

Yes—Apple laid off more than 600 employees, but the precise figure covered by the California notices was 614. The notices concerned permanent job losses at eight Santa Clara locations; they were not a worldwide count of everyone affected by Apple’s project cancellations.

The layoffs were widely linked to the end of two initiatives: Project Titan and Apple’s internal next-generation display effort. Reporting indicated that most affected workers were associated with facilities connected to the car project, while at least some were tied to the display program. The California WARN filings reported by TechCrunch did not identify the project assignment of each employee.

What the California WARN filings establish

California WARN notices are advance notices of qualifying permanent layoffs or other employment actions. In this case, they establish the following:

  • Employer: Apple Inc.
  • Number of affected employees: 614.
  • Location: Eight Apple facilities in Santa Clara, California.
  • Notification date: March 28, 2024.
  • Scheduled effective date: May 27, 2024.
  • Nature of the action: Permanent layoffs.

The March 28 notification date did not necessarily mean that all 614 employees stopped working that day. The notices announced layoffs scheduled for May 27, giving employees advance notice under the applicable process.

Timeline of Apple’s cuts

Date What happened
February 27, 2024 Apple reportedly told employees it was ending its car project and redirecting some staff toward artificial-intelligence work.
March 28, 2024 Apple notified 614 affected California employees, according to the WARN filings.
April 4–5, 2024 The filings became public and were reported by major outlets.
May 27, 2024 The layoffs were scheduled to take effect.

Why the layoffs were connected to Project Titan

Project Titan was Apple’s internal electric-vehicle effort, reportedly launched around 2014. Over roughly a decade, its plans reportedly shifted from ambitions involving a fully autonomous vehicle to a more limited driver-assistance system.

Apple’s car effort faced reported leadership changes, changing product goals, delays, technical challenges, manufacturing complexity and uncertainty about whether the vehicle could become a commercially viable product. Reporting from The Guardian and other outlets described those difficulties as part of the background to the cancellation.

The timing explains why the layoffs were associated with Project Titan: the California notices came shortly after Apple reportedly ended the initiative. But the notices themselves did not say that Project Titan caused every individual job loss. The careful description is that the layoffs followed and were widely linked to the cancellation.

The display project is an important part of the story

The car project was not the only initiative reportedly being shut down. Apple also stopped work on an internal next-generation display effort, associated with microLED technology and initially intended for products such as the Apple Watch.

Apple’s display work was connected to its 2014 acquisition of LuxVue Technology. Reports cited engineering difficulty, supplier problems and high costs as obstacles. According to Bloomberg Law’s account of the filings, at least 87 affected employees worked at an address associated with the display-development operation. The other listed locations were associated with the car effort.

That means “Apple laid off 614 car employees” is too broad. The available evidence supports a connection to both canceled projects, not a definitive project-by-project classification for all 614 employees.

What happened to the broader car team?

Apple reportedly had approximately 2,000 people working on Project Titan when it was canceled. That figure describes the approximate size of the car team—not the number of people laid off.

Reporting indicated several possible outcomes for members of that broader group:

  • Some employees were reassigned to Apple’s generative-artificial-intelligence initiatives.
  • Some moved into other engineering, robotics or related roles.
  • Some were given about 90 days to seek internal openings.
  • At least 614 California employees were covered by the permanent layoff notices.

Therefore, the evidence does not support the claim that Apple dismissed the entire roughly 2,000-person car team. Some workers were reportedly retained or offered opportunities elsewhere in the company.

Why did Apple abandon the car project?

Apple did not publish a detailed public postmortem explaining the project’s cancellation in the sources available for this account. Explanations came primarily from reporting based on people familiar with the company’s internal decision-making.

  • APPS FLY WITH APPLE SILICON — All your favorites, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud, run lightning fast in macOS.*

Those reports cited several factors:

  • Disagreements among executives about the product’s direction.
  • Repeated changes in the vehicle’s scope and capabilities.
  • The technical difficulty of developing a commercially viable autonomous vehicle.
  • Missed targets, delays and staff turnover.
  • High expected costs and manufacturing complexity.
  • Pressure to direct more resources toward artificial intelligence.

It is more accurate to say Apple abandoned the project after years of changing plans and reported technical, financial and organizational challenges than to present the cancellation as the result of one publicly confirmed cause.

How large were the layoffs relative to Apple?

Apple reported approximately 161,000 full-time-equivalent employees as of September 30, 2023, in its annual filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Compared with that workforce, 614 employees represented roughly 0.38% of Apple’s reported global full-time-equivalent total. The cuts were significant for the affected teams and notable because they represented Apple’s first major publicly reported round of layoffs since the pandemic, but they did not amount to a company-wide workforce reduction.

The comparison has limits. The 614 figure is a California WARN count, while Apple’s workforce figure is global. The notices also do not necessarily capture transfers, voluntary departures, international effects, contractor reductions or other employment arrangements.

What the filings do not tell us

The public notices and reporting do not establish:

  • The exact project assignment of every laid-off employee.
  • The total worldwide number of employees affected by the cancellations.
  • How many contractors or vendor workers were affected.
  • The severance or compensation terms for the employees.
  • Whether any car-related technology or patents were retained for future Apple products.

Contractors should not be added to the 614 figure without separate evidence. Likewise, the California notices should not be treated as a complete global accounting of the project wind-down.

Bottom line: 614 layoffs, not 2,000

Apple’s documented California WARN notices covered 614 permanent layoffs, with notification on March 28, 2024, and an effective date of May 27, 2024. The cuts followed the cancellation of Project Titan and an internal display initiative, but the filings did not prove that all 614 employees worked on the car project.

The clearest interpretation is that Apple’s decision to abandon two costly, long-running projects produced a measurable workforce reduction in California while other members of the broader car team were reassigned, given time to seek internal roles or otherwise handled outside the 614 notices.
