Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT occupy different roles
The most useful comparison is about where each service works on an iPhone, not about declaring one universally smarter. Apple Intelligence is a collection of operating-system features. It appears in places such as Siri, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, Photos, Safari and Image Playground. ChatGPT is an external service that Apple Intelligence can consult for selected requests.
That distinction affects what you see. Apple’s own features can be available directly in the iPhone interface, with Apple’s permission prompts and settings. ChatGPT appears when you choose it, when Siri determines it may help with a request, or when a Writing Tools or Visual Intelligence action offers the extension. The documented integration does not mean every request is automatically sent to ChatGPT or that ChatGPT is continuously running.

What Apple Intelligence can do on an iPhone
Writing Tools across supported apps
Writing Tools is Apple’s system-level writing assistance. Depending on the text field and the feature available in your software version, you can ask it to rewrite text, adjust its style or tone, proofread, summarize and work with selected passages without opening a separate chatbot. This is useful when the text is already in an iPhone app and you want an edit in place.
Apple’s next-generation announcement for June 2026 also describes expanded integrated writing tools. The exact options can vary by operating-system release, language and region, so the labels on your iPhone are the authority for your installation.
Visual Intelligence
Visual Intelligence uses the iPhone camera and on-screen context as an entry point. You can point the camera at an object or nearby place, ask a question and continue with typed or dictated follow-ups. Apple positions Visual Intelligence as an Apple Intelligence experience, while the ChatGPT extension can provide additional interpretation when you select it.

Siri and other Apple experiences
Apple Intelligence also changes Siri and adds capabilities across Photos, Safari and Image Playground. Apple’s June 2026 announcement describes a dedicated Siri app, expanded Visual Intelligence and additions to those apps. Siri AI is a separate evolving layer in iOS 27 documentation and is identified as beta, so its behavior and availability should not be treated as final.

Siri can offer ChatGPT for requests where a more in-depth answer may help. Apple’s examples include general questions, asking for a recipe based on a photo and summarizing a document that is open in Files. You can also begin a request with “Ask ChatGPT” to direct it to the extension.

This is conditional routing, not a promise that ChatGPT handles every Siri request. Siri may answer with Apple’s own capabilities, ask you to clarify, or request permission before using ChatGPT.
Compose in Writing Tools
Writing Tools’ Compose action can use a prompt to create text rather than merely revise text you have already written. OpenAI’s description also says Compose can access ChatGPT image tools to generate an image to accompany the writing. The practical difference is that you can start with an instruction such as a subject, audience and tone instead of pasting a draft into a separate app.

Camera questions in Visual Intelligence
When the iPhone camera is pointed at an object or nearby location, you can ask ChatGPT what it sees. Follow-up questions can be typed or dictated. OpenAI describes examples involving nearby places and objects. The service is useful for interpreting what is in view, but the documentation does not promise perfect recognition, current local information or professional advice.
Image and document understanding
ChatGPT can interpret images and documents supplied through Apple’s integrated flows. Siri can ask before a photo or file is sent, and Apple says files still require permission even if you have changed the ordinary request-confirmation setting. This makes the integration suitable for questions about a document open in Files or an image selected during a supported action, provided you approve the transfer.

How to enable ChatGPT on your iPhone
The setup is handled in iOS Settings rather than in a hidden Siri menu.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Tap ChatGPT.
- Choose Set Up.
- Select the option to enable ChatGPT without an account, or connect an existing ChatGPT account.
Apple’s setup flow lets you use the extension without signing in. If you sign in, requests can be saved to your ChatGPT chat history. Apple also says paid ChatGPT accounts can use advanced ChatGPT capabilities more often; payment is not required for the basic integrated extension.
Accounts, history and permission controls
Using ChatGPT without signing in
An account is optional for the Apple Intelligence extension. This is the simplest setup when you want occasional answers or image and document help without maintaining a ChatGPT history. Because no sign-in is connected, you should not expect those requests to appear in a personal ChatGPT history.
What signing in changes
Signing in connects the integration to your ChatGPT account and enables saving requests to ChatGPT chat history. If you use a paid ChatGPT plan, Apple says advanced capabilities may be available more often. The documentation does not specify a universal quota, so treat “more often” as a plan-dependent allowance rather than a fixed number.
Confirmation before a request is sent
By default, Siri asks before using ChatGPT. In Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT, you can turn off Confirm ChatGPT Requests for ordinary requests. Starting a request with “Ask ChatGPT” is another way to signal your intent.

Photos and files are handled more cautiously. Apple and OpenAI state that permission is still required before those items are sent, even when ordinary request confirmation is disabled. Review the item shown in the prompt before approving it, especially when a document contains account numbers, addresses or other private information.
Disabling the extension
You can disable ChatGPT from the ChatGPT settings under Apple Intelligence & Siri. Apple also documents a control for turning off Setup Prompts if you do not want the iPhone to suggest configuring the extension.

Compatibility: hardware, language, region and software matter
Apple says Apple Intelligence is not available on every iPhone model, language or region. In its June 8, 2026 announcement, Apple lists iPhone 16 models or later and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max among the supported device families for iOS 27 Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. That list is a device-family guide, not a guarantee that every feature is available in every market.
The current iOS 27 Siri guide identifies Siri AI as beta, starting in English, and initially unavailable in the European Union on iOS. Apple also notes that some server-side Apple Intelligence features have daily usage limits. Availability can change as Apple expands languages, regions and server capacity.
ChatGPT integration is available only where the ChatGPT app and service are available. Apple’s older iOS 26 feature document contains version-specific feature and language notes; it should not be treated as the definitive current language matrix. Before troubleshooting, check Apple’s latest availability information for your exact iPhone model, iOS version, language and region.

Supported conclusions
- Apple Intelligence is the integrated iPhone feature layer.

- You can use the extension without an account; signing in enables ChatGPT history.

Claims you should not infer
- There is no published controlled benchmark in the cited Apple and OpenAI materials showing that either system is more accurate, faster or more reliable.
- The integration pages do not establish battery consumption, response-time averages or a universal daily request quota.
- ChatGPT’s complete standalone iPhone-app feature set is outside this comparison; the claims here are limited to ChatGPT reached through Apple Intelligence.
- Availability of a feature on one supported model does not guarantee the same feature in every language or country.
Common problems and practical fixes
ChatGPT does not appear in Settings
Confirm that the iPhone supports Apple Intelligence, is running a compatible iOS release and is in a region and language where the feature is offered. Then look specifically under Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. If the ChatGPT service is unavailable in your location, the extension may not be offered even when the hardware is eligible.
Siri keeps asking for confirmation
That is the default privacy behavior. Leave Confirm ChatGPT Requests enabled if you want approval on each ordinary request, or disable it in the ChatGPT settings for routine requests. The setting does not remove the separate permission prompt for photos and files.
A file or photo was not sent
Look for the permission prompt and approve the specific item if you are comfortable sharing it. A disabled confirmation setting does not bypass file and photo permission. If no prompt appears, make sure the file is open in a supported Apple flow and that ChatGPT is enabled.

History saving requires a signed-in ChatGPT account. Using the extension without signing in does not connect requests to a ChatGPT history. Sign in through the ChatGPT setup panel, then check the account shown there before sending new requests.
A capability is unavailable or stops working
Server-side Apple Intelligence features can have daily usage limits. Beta Siri AI behavior can also change between software releases. Check the iPhone’s language and region settings, install the current supported iOS update and consult Apple’s latest availability guidance before assuming the device is defective.
A sensible way to use both
Use Apple Intelligence as the default interface for tasks that begin inside the iPhone: selecting text, asking Siri to help with an open document or pointing the camera at something. Choose ChatGPT when you want a longer-form explanation, a prompt-driven draft, an image to accompany writing or interpretation of an approved image or document.
This combined approach avoids a false either-or decision. Apple’s layer determines where the request starts and what permissions are shown; ChatGPT supplies an optional service for the requests that benefit from its documented capabilities. Review generated content, confirm what leaves the phone and keep the availability limits of your model, language, region and iOS version in mind.
