Yes—but the headline needs qualification. Apple’s California Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings covered 735 workers across separate notices: 614 in Santa Clara County and 121 in San Diego. Most of the Santa Clara locations had been associated with Apple’s canceled electric-car effort, Project Titan, while another was linked through reporting to Apple’s discontinued in-house microLED work. The filings do not show that all 735 workers belonged to the car team, or that Apple announced one single 700-person layoff.
What Apple’s filings confirm
The clearest official evidence came through California WARN filings rather than a conventional public announcement explaining a companywide restructuring. The Santa Clara notices were filed on March 28, 2024, and listed planned layoffs affecting 614 workers, with an effective date of May 27, 2024.

A separate notice covered 121 workers in San Diego, with an effective date of April 26, 2024. Contemporary reporting associated that office with Siri data operations, including work evaluating Siri responses and improving accuracy.

California’s WARN process generally requires covered employers to provide advance notice of mass layoffs, plant closures, or relocations. A filing is an official notice of planned job loss, but it is not necessarily proof that every person listed ultimately left the company. Transfers, redeployment, and other internal arrangements can change the final outcome.
How many were connected to Apple Car?
The WARN forms identified workplaces and headcounts—not each employee’s product assignment. The strongest available reporting linked the locations to Apple’s canceled car program and other discontinued hardware work.

The largest reported group was 371 workers at 3689 Kifer Road, a facility widely associated with Project Titan. Another 58 workers at 1705 Wyatt Drive were listed at a location associated with LuxVue, the microLED company Apple acquired in 2014. The remaining Santa Clara layoffs were distributed across other Apple-occupied sites that had previously been connected in reporting to car development or related hardware work.

What happened to Project Titan?
Apple had reportedly worked for roughly a decade on an electric and autonomous vehicle effort commonly known as Project Titan. In late February 2024, the company told employees that it was winding down the project.
Reporting at the time estimated that the car team had approximately 2,000 employees, although that was not an official Apple headcount. Some employees were reportedly offered opportunities to move into artificial-intelligence work or apply for other internal positions. Those options did not necessarily fit every role: specialized automotive hardware, design, and engineering skills may not have transferred directly to Apple’s remaining product groups.

The subsequent WARN filings therefore reflect the employment impact of ending a major experimental program, not necessarily the immediate dismissal of everyone who had worked on it.

MicroLED work
Apple also reportedly discontinued its in-house microLED initiative amid production difficulty and cost concerns. The 58-worker notice tied to the Wyatt Drive facility is consistent with that account, but the WARN document itself should not be described as explicitly labeling those employees the microLED team.

Siri data operations
The separate San Diego notice involving 121 workers was reported as affecting a Siri data-operations office rather than the car program. Apple reportedly offered affected employees the possibility of relocating to Austin, Texas. As a result, the 121 figure should be described as workers notified or affected—not as proof that every person ultimately lost Apple employment.
Why reports cite 614, 735, or 792 workers
The different totals refer to different scopes:
- 614: The number listed in the March Santa Clara filings.
- 700-plus: A rounded media description of the contemporaneous Apple reductions.
- 735: The 614 Santa Clara workers plus the separate 121-person San Diego notice.
- 792: A broader total cited by a WARN-record tracker for Apple filings during 2024, including 57 workers in Hawaii and other notices. It should not be treated as the Apple Car layoff total.
This distinction matters because a calendar-year WARN total is not the same thing as the number of workers affected by one project cancellation.
What remains uncertain
- The filings do not itemize each worker’s project or team.
- The Apple Car, microLED, and Siri connections come from facility histories and contemporaneous reporting, not project labels beside every WARN entry.
- A WARN notice records planned job loss; it does not guarantee that every notified worker ultimately became unemployed.
- The available reporting does not provide a detailed public Apple breakdown of which positions were reassigned, relocated, or terminated.
- These filings do not establish the total cost of Project Titan or the company’s microLED effort.
Why the layoffs mattered
The cuts showed Apple ending or reorganizing expensive experimental programs while redirecting some talent toward artificial intelligence. They also illustrated why Apple’s layoffs can be difficult to interpret from headlines alone: a single company may file separate notices for different offices, projects, and employment situations.

At the time, Apple’s workforce was reported at roughly 161,000 full-time-equivalent employees, so the 735 combined notices represented a small share of the company’s overall workforce. That comparison is only approximate, because the WARN filings cover specific sites and employment categories rather than providing a complete companywide headcount analysis. The available evidence points primarily to discontinued or reorganized projects—not a uniform percentage cut across Apple’s core businesses.
