You earn an American Express referral reward by signing in to your Amex account, opening Refer a Friend, and sending the personalized link shown for that Card Account. Your friend must use that link to apply for and obtain an available American Express Card. If the referral meets the offer terms, Amex posts the account-specific reward—usually after several weeks.

There is no universal Amex referral-points figure. The reward, eligible cards, annual limits, and timing depend on your Card Account and country. Check the live offer in your Amex website or app before sharing, and treat your friend’s welcome offer as a separate promotion with its own eligibility and spending rules.

How does the Amex referral program work?

American Express describes the U.S. program as allowing eligible Card Members to refer friends to available American Express Cards. In practical terms, the process has four links in the chain:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Your account displays an offer. The Refer a Friend page identifies whether your Card Account has an active referral offer and what reward is currently available.
  2. You generate a personalized link. The link is tied to your account. A generic card-application URL does not establish the referral in the same way.
  3. Your friend applies through that link. The applicant must stay within the referral flow, select an available card, and submit an application under the applicable terms.
  4. The card is approved and obtained. The referral reward is normally contingent on the friend obtaining an available American Express Card, not merely clicking the link or submitting an application.

When those conditions are satisfied, Amex credits the reward to the referring Card Account. The account-specific offer controls the number and type of points or other reward; it is not safe to advertise a standard number to every reader.

Check your live offer before you share

Find the referral page

  1. Sign in to the American Express website or open the Amex App.
  2. Open Refer a Friend from the account menu, rewards area, or promotional section shown for your card.
  3. Read the offer displayed for that specific Card Account, including the reward, eligible products, expiry language, and any annual limit.
  4. Save the offer details or take a screenshot for your records before sending the link.

Amex states that referral offers may vary by Card Account and that you may not be eligible for an offer at all. A different cardholder, even one with the same card product, can therefore see a different reward or no referral promotion.

Confirm that the intended card is available

Your friend can generally choose among the cards presented in the referral flow, but availability is controlled by Amex and can change. Do not promise that a particular card will remain listed, that an application will be approved, or that every listed card carries the same welcome offer.

How to send an Amex referral correctly

  1. Open Refer a Friend. Use the logged-in website or app rather than copying a link from an old email, browser history, or another cardholder.
  2. Review the displayed reward. Verify the points or other reward, the Card Account to which it will post, and any stated cap or expiration.
  3. Choose a sharing method. Use the email, text, or other sharing controls Amex provides. You can also copy the personalized link if the interface offers that option.
  4. Ask for consent first. Send the link to a friend or family member who agrees to receive it. U.K. program terms specifically require consent and limit sharing to friends and family.
  5. Tell the applicant to use the same link. The applicant should open the link, remain in that referral flow, select an available American Express Card, and complete the application there.
  6. Keep the referral record. Save the date, recipient, card selected, and a copy of the offer terms. Do not send the link to yourself or attempt to manufacture multiple applications.
  7. Wait for approval and card issuance. The referral is not complete at the click or application stage; the friend must obtain an eligible card under the applicable terms.
  8. Monitor your account. Check Rewards Summary or account activity for the referral credit after the stated posting window begins.

How many points can you earn through an Amex referral?

The only reliable answer is the amount shown in your current Amex offer. American Express says referral offers vary by Card Account, and the reward may be points or another account-specific benefit. The displayed currency could differ by market—for example, Membership Rewards points, airline points, hotel points, Avios, Nectar points, or another reward unit—but the live offer determines what you actually receive.

Because offers are account-specific, avoid articles, social posts, or messages that promise a fixed number such as “10,000 points for every referral.” That figure may belong to another cardholder, a previous promotion, or another country. If your account shows no offer, you should not assume that a referral bonus will be paid.

U.S. and U.K. limits are not interchangeable

Market Reward shown Published annual limit Typical posting window Important conditions
United States Points or another reward specified for the Card Account; the amount varies by account and offer. Up to five referral bonuses per Card Account per calendar year, according to U.S. terms. Typically 8–12 weeks after the qualifying referral, according to U.S. terms. The friend must use the personalized link and obtain an available American Express Card. The referrer may not be eligible for an offer.
United Kingdom Reward units specified by the U.K. offer; the currency and amount depend on the account and promotion. Up to 90,000 reward units per calendar year, according to U.K. terms. Up to 10 weeks, according to U.K. terms. Share only with friends and family, obtain consent, and follow the program’s fair-use rules. Applicant and card eligibility still apply.

The caps are measured differently: the U.S. limit is expressed as a number of referral bonuses, while the U.K. limit is expressed as reward units. Neither figure tells you the value of a particular live offer, and U.K. limits should not be presented as U.S. rules.

Does your friend also earn a bonus?

Your friend may receive a separate welcome offer, but it is not automatically guaranteed by your referral. The applicant’s offer can include its own minimum-spend requirement, deadline, eligible purchases, and eligibility restrictions. Approval for the card also remains subject to Amex’s application decision.

Tell the applicant to read the welcome-offer terms on the application page before submitting. A person who has held or received a particular card before, or who does not meet another condition in the offer, may not qualify for its welcome bonus even though the referral itself is recorded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your referral reward and your friend’s welcome offer are separate events. Your bonus depends on the referral conditions attached to your Card Account; the friend’s bonus depends on the terms attached to the card application.

How long does an Amex referral bonus take?

For U.S. Card Accounts, Amex terms say the reward typically posts within 8–12 weeks. U.K. terms allow up to 10 weeks. These are measured in weeks, not days, and the clock generally depends on the applicant obtaining an eligible card rather than merely opening the link.

The timing can therefore extend beyond the application date if approval, card issuance, or another qualifying event occurs later. A referral made near the end of a calendar year can also interact with the annual cap and the date Amex records the qualifying event; do not assume that sending the link reserves a place under a future year’s limit.

What to check while you wait

  • Confirm that the applicant opened the personalized link and completed the application in that flow.
  • Ask whether the selected card was available through the referral page and whether the application was approved.
  • Review Rewards Summary and recent account activity periodically.
  • Keep the referral date, offer wording, and any confirmation messages until the reward posts.

If the reward is late

  1. Wait until the full market-specific window has elapsed: 8–12 weeks for the U.S. typical window or up to 10 weeks under the U.K. terms.
  2. Check that the applicant obtained the card, not just that an application was submitted.
  3. Verify that the referral was made while your offer was active and that the applicant used your personalized link.
  4. Contact Amex through the support channel displayed in your logged-in account. Provide the referral date, Card Account, applicant details that Amex requests, and your saved offer record.

Support can confirm the status under the applicable terms, but it cannot turn an ineligible application into a qualifying referral. Avoid sending a second application merely to correct a tracking problem; that can create duplicate applications or affect the applicant’s credit profile.

Consent, fair use, and safe sharing

Referral links are promotional links tied to your account, not unrestricted advertising assets. U.K. terms say to share only with friends and family, obtain consent, and comply with the program rules. Even where local wording differs, permission-based sharing is the safest practice.

  • Ask before sending an email or text, and explain that the message contains a card-application link.
  • Do not post the link in public forums, mass-mailing lists, paid advertisements, or automated messages unless the applicable terms expressly allow it.
  • Do not misstate the reward, imply guaranteed approval, or promise that the applicant will receive a welcome bonus.
  • Do not alter the URL, hide the destination, or combine it with claims Amex has not made.
  • Stop sharing if the offer expires, disappears from your account, or reaches its annual limit.

These practices protect the recipient from unwanted marketing and reduce the chance that a referral is rejected under fair-use or tracking rules.

Common mistakes that prevent a referral from counting

Using a generic application page

A friend who starts from a search result, a saved bookmark, or a different person’s link may not be associated with your referral. Start from Refer a Friend and send the personalized link generated there.

Assuming a click is enough

The applicant normally must select an available card, submit the application, and obtain that card. A page view, abandoned application, declined application, or card that is never issued does not satisfy the qualifying event described in the offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quoting an old or another person’s reward

Offers vary by Card Account and can change. The amount shown in a blog post, social message, or prior screenshot does not replace the offer currently displayed after you sign in.

Confusing the two bonuses

Your referral reward is not the same as the applicant’s welcome offer. Each has separate terms, and one can be paid while the other is unavailable.

Ignoring the calendar-year limit

In the U.S., the stated limit is up to five referral bonuses per Card Account per calendar year. In the U.K., the stated limit is up to 90,000 reward units per calendar year. Keep a simple running record and recheck the live terms before sending another referral.

Expecting an immediate credit

Allow the full stated window. Checking after a few days can lead to unnecessary support contacts and does not speed up processing.

A practical tracking checklist

Use this checklist for each referral:

  • Date and time you opened Refer a Friend.
  • Name of the Card Account and exact reward displayed.
  • Expiration date or other offer deadline, if shown.
  • Recipient’s consent and the date the link was sent.
  • Card selected by the applicant and application date, when the applicant volunteers that information.
  • Approval or card-issuance confirmation, if available.
  • Date the applicable 8–12-week U.S. or 10-week U.K. window ends.
  • Date the reward appears in Rewards Summary or account activity.

Keep only information you are comfortable storing and do not request sensitive application data such as a Social Security number, bank credentials, or full card number. Amex support can identify the referral through the account and the details it legitimately needs.

How to decide whether to share an offer

Sharing is most useful when the offer is visible, the recipient genuinely wants an Amex card, and both of you understand the timing. Before sending, ask:

  1. Is there an active offer on my Card Account right now?
  2. Is the displayed reward worth the effort after considering the annual cap and the several-week wait?
  3. Does the recipient want to apply, and have I obtained consent?
  4. Can the recipient meet the card’s fees, spending requirements, and other terms independently of the referral?
  5. Can I preserve the link and offer details in case tracking needs to be checked later?

If any answer is no, wait rather than sending an outdated or unwanted link. A referral should help someone who already wants the card, not pressure a person into a credit application for the sake of points.

What to tell the person you refer

A clear message prevents most misunderstandings. Explain that the link is personalized, that the card must be obtained through the link for your referral to qualify, and that the applicant should read the card’s own terms. State the reward exactly as it appears in your account rather than rounding it up or presenting it as guaranteed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also explain the timing: your U.S. reward typically takes 8–12 weeks, while U.K. terms allow up to 10 weeks. The applicant should evaluate the card on its own merits, including any annual fee, interest rate, spending requirement, and eligibility rules shown in the application. Those card terms are separate from the referral offer.

When to contact American Express

Use the support option shown after signing in when the applicable posting window has passed and the reward is missing, or when the Refer a Friend page disappears despite an apparently active promotion. Have your account details and referral record ready. Ask support to review whether the referral was tracked and whether the applicant’s card met the offer conditions.

Contacting support before the normal window, changing the applicant’s link, or submitting another application usually cannot accelerate the credit and can make the record harder to reconcile. Preserve the original details and follow the channel Amex provides for your market.

The straightforward way to earn the bonus

Open Refer a Friend from your own Amex account, read the live account-specific offer, and send its personalized link only to a consenting friend or family member. The friend must use that link and obtain an available card. Then wait the full market-specific period—typically 8–12 weeks in the U.S. or up to 10 weeks in the U.K.—and check Rewards Summary or account activity. Treat the reward amount, annual cap, and your friend’s welcome offer as variables controlled by the current terms, not as fixed promises.
