If the online control is unavailable, call the number on the back of the card. The change applies to future qualifying incidental fees; it does not retroactively make earlier charges eligible.
What changing the selection actually does
The U.S. Platinum Card airline fee credit is an account-level benefit. You designate one qualifying airline, and American Express can reimburse up to $200 per calendar year in statement credits for eligible incidental fees charged by that airline. Purchases made by the Basic Card Member and Additional Card Members on the enrolled account all draw from the same annual maximum; each cardholder does not receive a separate $200 allowance.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Your selection is not a general airline-travel credit. The airline you choose is the merchant whose incidental charges can be recognized for the benefit. A ticket purchased from a different carrier, even if the flight is marketed, operated, or connected through an alliance partner, does not become eligible merely because the selected airline is involved in the itinerary.

When an existing selection can be changed
American Express permits an existing airline choice to be changed once each year in January. If you take no action during that window, the airline already on the account remains selected for the new calendar year. This is different from making an initial choice: a member who has never selected an airline can make that first selection at any time, subject to the choices shown by American Express.
#1 Best Overall
The January window is tied to the calendar year, not to your card-opening anniversary or the date of your last change. A change made in January controls the airline for subsequent eligible charges during that year. Fees charged before the change remain subject to the airline that was selected when those fees were incurred, and a fee from an unselected airline cannot be reassigned later.
Who is allowed to change the airline
- Basic Card Member: The primary cardholder can make the selection through the online account or by phone.
- Authorized Account Manager: An individual with this account-management authority may also make the selection.
- Other Additional Card Members: Merely holding an Additional Card does not by itself confer the authority to change the enrolled airline.
Because the benefit belongs to the enrolled Platinum account, the person changing the choice should confirm that they are working in the correct account if they manage more than one American Express card.
How to switch the selection online
- Sign in to your American Express online account. Use the account that contains the Platinum Card enrolled for the airline fee credit.
- Open the Benefits area. Look for the airline-fee-credit enrollment page or a control that identifies the currently selected airline. Labels can vary by account view, so use the benefit name rather than relying on one exact button title.
- Start the change during January. The option to replace an existing selection is generally presented only in the permitted January window.
- Review the available airline list. Select the carrier you expect to use for qualifying incidental spending. The list displayed for your account is the operative list; American Express states that qualifying airlines may change.
- Submit and verify the new choice. Look for an on-screen confirmation or a refreshed benefit record showing the new airline. Save a screenshot or note the date for your records.
- Use the enrolled Platinum account for future fees. The selected airline must charge the incidental purchase to the account associated with the benefit for American Express to evaluate it.
If no change control appears, first verify that it is January, that you are viewing the correct Platinum account, and that you have Basic Card Member or Authorized Account Manager permissions. Do not assume that a missing control means the benefit has been canceled; the account may simply be outside the change window or may already show the airline you want.

How to change it by phone
Call the customer-service number printed on the back of the Platinum Card when the online enrollment page is unavailable or does not accept the change. Tell the representative that you want to change the airline selected for the Platinum airline fee credit. Be prepared to authenticate the account and identify the new carrier from the choices the representative can offer.
Ask the representative to confirm three details before ending the call:
- the airline now recorded as selected;
- the date the change became effective; and
- that the request was made under the correct Platinum account.
Record the call date and any confirmation reference. A phone request does not make fees charged before the effective change date eligible, so keep receipts for charges that fall near the transition.

Which airlines can be selected
American Express’s current U.S. terms list carriers including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. The terms warn that the list is subject to change, and the options presented in your account or in the current benefit terms take precedence over an older list.

| Selection check | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| How often you fly the carrier | A carrier you rarely use may leave the annual allowance stranded. | Review your planned trips for the calendar year before choosing. |
| Likely incidental-fee spend | The benefit applies to qualifying fees, not the ticket price. | Estimate checked bags, onboard purchases, change fees, lounge day passes, or other eligible charges you realistically expect. |
| Merchant coding reliability | American Express relies on the airline’s submitted merchant or service coding. | Prefer the carrier and purchase types that have a clear history of being billed directly by that airline, while recognizing that coding can still vary. |
| Current eligibility | The qualifying list can change. | Check the January selection screen or current terms immediately before submitting. |
The best choice is therefore personal rather than universal: select the carrier on which your household expects to incur the most eligible incidental fees, not necessarily the airline on which you will spend the most on airfare.
Charges that can trigger the credit
American Express gives examples of incidental charges that may qualify when they are charged by the selected airline and submitted with the appropriate coding:
Rank #4
| Potentially qualifying fee | Important condition |
|---|---|
| Checked-bag fee | Must be charged by the selected airline to the enrolled account. |
| In-flight refreshments | The airline’s merchant submission must identify the purchase in a way American Express recognizes. |
| Flight-change fee | The charge must be an incidental fee rather than a new ticket purchase. |
| Overweight or oversize baggage fee | Eligibility depends on the selected airline and the coding sent with the charge. |
| Airport lounge day pass | The pass must be sold and coded by the selected airline, not an unrelated lounge operator. |
| Pet-kennel fee | The airline must submit the fee under an eligible incidental category. |
| Phone reservation fee | The fee must be separately charged and coded by the selected airline. |
“Potentially qualifying” is deliberate. American Express does not manually reclassify every transaction; the airline’s merchant and service coding is a key part of the automated decision.
Purchases the credit does not cover
| Charge type | Why it is excluded |
|---|---|
| Airline tickets | The benefit is for incidental fees, not base airfare. |
| Upgrade-associated fees | Charges connected with upgrading a seat or cabin are excluded under the terms. |
| Buying mileage points | Point purchases are not incidental airline fees. |
| Fees to transfer mileage points | Transfer charges are excluded even when the points program is connected with the selected airline. |
| Gift cards | Gift-card transactions do not qualify as incidental fees. |
| Duty-free purchases | Duty-free merchandise is outside the benefit’s covered categories. |
| Award tickets | An award booking does not turn related charges into eligible incidental fees. |
| Fees from a non-selected airline | Only the one airline enrolled for the account is covered. |
| Fees from an alliance partner | Partner or alliance relationships do not substitute for selecting that airline. |
| Fees charged before the selection | Eligibility is determined by the airline selected when the fee was charged; changing later is not retroactive. |
How long a statement credit takes to appear
American Express says a qualifying statement credit is typically received within a few days, but it can take six to eight weeks after the fee is charged. The longer window matters when you are checking whether a January selection change worked: a transaction can remain pending or post without an immediate matching credit even when it ultimately qualifies.

What to do when a credit is missing
- Confirm the selected airline at the time of purchase. A fee from the prior airline after you changed the selection, or a fee from another carrier, is not eligible simply because you expected to switch.
- Check the transaction date and posting date. The account must have been enrolled for that airline when the fee was charged, and the purchase must be posted to the enrolled account.
- Classify the fee. Compare it with the eligible and excluded categories. Airfare, upgrades, mileage transactions, gift cards, duty-free purchases, award tickets, and partner-airline fees should not be expected to trigger the credit.
- Allow the full processing period. Wait up to eight weeks from the fee charge unless American Express gives you a different instruction.
- Contact American Express if eight weeks have passed. Call the number on the back of the card and provide the transaction details. Explain that the fee was charged by the selected airline and ask whether the merchant or service coding prevented automatic recognition.
A transaction can look like an eligible bag or onboard fee and still fail to trigger automatically if the airline submits an unexpected merchant category or service code. That coding issue is why a receipt description alone cannot guarantee reimbursement.
Examples of how the January change works
Changing from one carrier to another in January
Suppose the account is enrolled with Airline A on December 31 and is changed to Airline B on January 10. A qualifying Airline A fee charged before January 10 is evaluated under the old selection. A qualifying Airline B fee charged after the change is evaluated under the new selection. Neither airline receives a second annual allowance; the account still has one shared calendar-year maximum.
Several cardholders use the same account
If the Basic Card Member pays a checked-bag fee and an Additional Card Member later pays an onboard purchase with the selected airline, both charges draw from the same account-level balance. Coordinate spending if multiple people use the benefit so one person does not assume that unused capacity belongs exclusively to their card.

A first-time selector can choose an airline outside the January change window. Once a selection exists, later replacements follow the once-per-January rule. Check the account’s enrollment status rather than treating a new Platinum Card as proof that no selection has ever been made; an existing account record may carry the enrollment.
The desired airline is missing from the list
Do not substitute a partner airline or assume that an older list is still valid. The airlines available on the current enrollment screen and in the current terms are the controlling choices. If the list appears incomplete or the page errors, use the phone number on the card for clarification.
A practical checklist before you submit the change
- It is January and you are changing an existing selection, or you are making a first selection at any time.
- You are the Basic Card Member or an Authorized Account Manager.
- You are signed in to the Platinum account that should receive the credits.
- You have reviewed expected incidental-fee spending, not just airfare, for the calendar year.
- The airline appears on the current American Express selection list.
- You understand that all cardholders on the account share one annual maximum.
- You have saved confirmation of the selected airline and effective date.
- You know which purchases are excluded and that coding can affect automatic recognition.
Key takeaways
An existing Amex Platinum airline selection can be replaced once each January through the online Benefits or enrollment page, or by calling the number on the back of the card. Only the Basic Card Member or an Authorized Account Manager can make the change. Choose based on the incidental fees you genuinely expect, verify the current qualifying list, and treat the benefit as one shared $200-per-calendar-year account allowance. After switching, use the selected airline for eligible incidental charges, allow up to eight weeks for a credit, and escalate a missing credit by phone once that period has elapsed.
