How the reward rates actually work
Blue Business Plus: 2X points, then 1X
Blue Business Plus earns 2 Membership Rewards points for each dollar of eligible purchases up to the first $50,000 in a calendar year. Once that threshold is reached, additional eligible purchases earn 1 point per dollar. The cap applies to the card’s regular eligible-purchase category; the issuer says eligible purchases on AmexTravel.com or in the Amex Travel App earn 2X and do not count toward the $50,000 limit. The current terms are described on the Blue Business Plus page.
“2X” means two points, not two cents. A points balance has no single guaranteed cash value because the result depends on the redemption you select. Comparing 2X directly with 2% cash back without assigning a valuation method to the points can produce a misleading answer.

Illustrative annual-spend outcomes
The following examples apply the published rates to eligible purchases and exclude any special Plus travel purchases that receive 2X outside the cap. They show the units each card produces; they do not claim that points equal the same dollar amount as cash back.
| Eligible purchases in the calendar year | Blue Business Plus | Blue Business Cash |
|---|---|---|
| $25,000 | 50,000 Membership Rewards points | $500 statement credit |
| $50,000 | 100,000 Membership Rewards points | $1,000 statement credit |
| $80,000 | 130,000 Membership Rewards points: 100,000 on the first $50,000 plus 30,000 at 1X | $1,300 statement credit: $1,000 on the first $50,000 plus $300 at 1% |
| $120,000 | 170,000 Membership Rewards points: 100,000 plus 70,000 at 1X | $1,700 statement credit: $1,000 plus $700 at 1% |
If your business spends well above $50,000, the value of the decision increasingly depends on what you can realistically do with points after the first-year threshold, not simply on the 2X label.
What you can do with Blue Business Plus points
Use points for eligible travel
American Express describes Pay with Points for eligible travel purchases. This can be useful when your business already books qualifying travel and prefers to offset that expense with points rather than receive a general statement credit. Availability and the number of points required depend on the eligible transaction and the issuer’s current program terms.

The Plus product page also lists statement-credit and gift-card redemptions. These options are simpler than travel transfers, but their value may differ from the value available through other redemption methods. Review the redemption terms at the time you use points instead of assuming every option has the same rate.

Transfer to participating airline and hotel programs
Transfers can give an experienced rewards user more flexibility, because points can move to participating airline and hotel programs. A transfer is not the same as cash: partner availability, transfer ratios and program rules determine the practical value. Only transfer when you have a specific redemption in mind and have confirmed the current partner terms.
How Blue Business Cash fits a simpler workflow
Cash back is credited automatically to the statement. That means the reward does not require selecting travel, monitoring transfer partners or deciding when to redeem. The credit reduces the card balance, while your accounting system can continue to record the underlying purchase in the normal way.
This structure is especially easy to budget around when your business wants a predictable offset against operating expenses. It also avoids the need to estimate a points value. The trade-off is that you give up the Plus card’s menu of travel, gift-card and transfer options.
Annual fees, interest and foreign transactions
Both cards are presented as no-annual-fee products
American Express lists both cards at a $0 annual fee on its no-annual-fee business-card comparison. A $0 annual fee does not mean borrowing is free: interest, late charges and other account fees can still apply under the agreement.

Blue Business Plus agreement terms available in 2026
The currently retrieved Blue Business Plus cardmember agreement is dated March 31, 2026. Its search-result extract lists a variable purchase APR of Prime Rate plus 9.99% to Prime Rate plus 19.99%, and a foreign transaction fee of 2.7% after conversion to U.S. dollars. Those figures are tied to that agreement date and should be confirmed in the live Blue Business Plus agreement and current Rates & Fees disclosure before applying.
Do not assume Cash terms match Plus
A comparable current Blue Business Cash agreement is not established in the cited materials. Check the Cash application’s live Rates & Fees table for its purchase APR, foreign transaction fee, penalty terms and any other charges. Do not copy the Plus figures onto the Cash card.
Paying interest can overwhelm rewards
The published earning rates apply to purchases, not to interest charges. Carrying a balance at a variable APR can cost substantially more than the rewards generated by that spending. If you expect to revolve a balance, compare the current APR and repayment cost before treating either card as a rewards choice.

Tools highlighted for Blue Business Cash
The Cash product information highlights employee cards, alerts and summary reports. Alerts can help you monitor employee-card activity, while reports provide a way to review spending by period. The issuer can change feature availability or labels, so check the live product page when setting up the account.
Neither set of tools makes one card universally better. Choose the workflow that matches how your business approves, tracks and reconciles employee purchases.
Application and credit considerations
The product pages say the application process may let an applicant learn whether they are approved without an impact to personal credit. That is not an unconditional “no credit impact” promise. The pages also state that business credit may be affected when applying and personal credit may be affected if an approved applicant accepts the card. Read the current application disclosures for the exact sequence that applies to you.
Approval, credit line, pricing and any promotional offer are determined under the issuer’s current underwriting and application terms. The cited pages do not establish a universal welcome offer or introductory APR for both cards, so do not rely on an advertised bonus or rate unless it appears in the live application you are completing.
Which card is better for different business situations?
Choose Blue Business Plus when flexibility matters
- You already use, or are willing to learn, Membership Rewards redemptions.
- Your business can use eligible travel bookings and may benefit from the separate 2X treatment for AmexTravel.com or Amex Travel App purchases.
- You value the option to transfer points to participating airline or hotel programs rather than receive only a statement credit.
- You can track points and are comfortable checking redemption values before using them.
Choose Blue Business Cash when predictability matters
- You want an automatic statement credit with no redemption decisions.
- Your bookkeeping process is easier when rewards are recorded as a straightforward account credit.
- You do not expect to use travel transfers or other points-specific options.
- You prefer to avoid assigning a value to points when comparing rewards.
Consider your spending pattern, not just your average month
Estimate eligible purchases for the entire calendar year, including seasonal inventory, tax payments that qualify, equipment and contractor expenses. The first $50,000 receives the higher rate on each card; spending beyond it earns at half the headline rate in its respective currency. If your spending is close to the threshold, identify when you are likely to cross it because the timing can affect your planning even though the annual cap itself does not change.
A practical selection process
- List expected eligible purchases. Build a calendar-year estimate rather than using one unusually high or low month.
- Separate ordinary purchases from Plus travel purchases. If you expect eligible AmexTravel.com or Amex Travel App spending, note that the issuer says it earns 2X without using the $50,000 cap.
- Choose your reward currency first. Select points only if you have a realistic redemption plan; select cash if an automatic statement credit is the outcome you want.
- Model both tiers. Apply 2X versus 1X for Plus and 2% versus 1% for Cash to the portion below and above $50,000.
- Review current costs. Open the live Rates & Fees and cardmember-agreement disclosures for the card you are considering, including APR and foreign transaction charges.
- Check operational features. Compare the employee-card controls, alerts, reporting and accounting connections against your actual bookkeeping workflow.
- Read the application disclosures. Confirm how the issuer describes personal and business credit inquiries before submitting an application.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating 2X as 2%. Points and cash are different currencies. A points value must be based on a specific redemption, not an automatic one-cent assumption.
- Ignoring the $50,000 breakpoint. A business spending $100,000 does not earn the headline rate on all $100,000; the second tier applies after the first $50,000.
- Assuming all Plus travel earns uncapped 2X. The issuer’s exception is for eligible purchases on AmexTravel.com or in the Amex Travel App. Confirm that a particular transaction qualifies.
- Assuming no annual fee means no cost. Interest and account fees can exceed rewards if balances are carried.
- Copying Plus rates onto Cash. Verify the Cash card’s own Rates & Fees disclosure; the cited materials do not establish identical APR or foreign-transaction terms.
- Calling the application risk-free for personal credit. The issuer describes a possible approval check without personal-credit impact, but also states that business credit may be affected and personal credit may be affected after acceptance.
- Choosing points without a redemption plan. If your team will never use travel, transfers, gift cards or other Plus options, the automatic Cash credit may be more practical.
Bottom line
Blue Business Plus is the conditional choice for a business that values flexible Membership Rewards points, understands the $50,000 annual breakpoint and will actively use the available redemption options. Blue Business Cash is the conditional choice for a business that wants a simple, automatic statement credit and does not need points flexibility. Because the cards earn different currencies, neither is universally the better earner; your eligible spending, redemption behavior, operating workflow and current issuer terms determine the better fit.
