The documented carry-over is eligible account spend toward the Platinum Complimentary Guest Access threshold. Authorized users—called Additional Card Members by American Express—may receive selected travel benefits, yet eligibility depends on the card and program. Lounge visits also require the right documents, and guest fees or complimentary-guest rules apply.
Can you use an American Express Travel Consultant after upgrading to Platinum?
For U.S. Consumer Platinum, U.S. Business Platinum and U.S. Corporate Platinum accounts, American Express says eligible Card Members are automatically enrolled in Platinum Member Airfares. You can search on AmexTravel.com or in the Amex Travel App, or book through an American Express Travel Consultant by calling the number on the back of your card and selecting or saying Travel when prompted.

That access is tied to the eligible Platinum product, not to how long you have held it. If you upgraded from another American Express card, the new Platinum account is the account whose current terms control travel benefits. A phone consultant can handle questions about flight booking and changes, hotels, cars, cruises, vacation rentals, travel alerts, documents, refunds and payment issues. Trips already booked online can generally be viewed or canceled through My Trips.

American Express explains that a Platinum Member Airfare might not display when the requested airline does not serve the route or when qualifying seats are unavailable. That is an inventory or routing limitation, not proof that your card is ineligible. Ask the consultant to check alternate flights, dates or airports before concluding that the benefit is missing.

What happens to spending when you upgrade?
The Platinum benefits terms contain a specific transition rule: when a Card Member upgrades or downgrades from a different American Express card to a Platinum Account, eligible purchases made on that Card Account count toward the purchase requirement for Complimentary Guest Access on the new Platinum Account.
This rule matters if you are trying to reach the current U.S. threshold of $75,000 in eligible calendar-year purchases. Eligible purchases made by Additional Card Members on the Platinum Account also contribute. Once the threshold is reached, the published policy provides up to two complimentary guests per Centurion Lounge visit. American Express says processing is typically completed within a week but can take as long as 12 weeks.
The carry-over language is narrow. It establishes treatment of eligible purchases for the Complimentary Guest Access requirement; it does not promise that an upgrade preserves every credit, status, airfare feature, hotel privilege or fee from the former card. Review the live benefits dashboard and the terms attached to your exact Platinum account before relying on any legacy benefit.
How long does the complimentary guest qualification last?
Under the current published policy, access after reaching the threshold lasts for the remainder of the calendar year in which you qualify, the following calendar year, and through January 31 of the next year. The qualification clock is based on eligible calendar-year purchases, so a purchase made near year-end can affect which attainment year it enters. The dashboard is the practical place to confirm whether American Express has credited the spend and activated the guest benefit.
Who is an authorized user on an American Express account?
American Express calls an authorized user an Additional Card Member: another person who uses a card on the account. The Basic Card Member remains responsible for all charges made on both the basic and additional cards, including charges the additional user makes.

American Express lists several eligibility conditions for an Additional Card Member. The person must be over age 13, must not have had an American Express account that defaulted, and cannot be the same individual as the Basic Card Member or another Additional Card Member on that account. Issuance of a card does not transfer liability away from the Basic Card Member.
What account information can an Additional Card Member see?
Access to account information is limited. An Additional Card Member can see the account’s total balance and that person’s own purchases. The Basic Card Member can view charges made on each Additional Card. This distinction is useful when an additional user is arranging travel but the primary cardholder is monitoring spending, statements or qualification progress.
Do Additional Card Members receive Amex Travel benefits?
There is no single answer for every program. American Express states that an Additional Card Member may receive some benefits, but the exact package depends on the specific card and program. Treat the additional card as a separate eligibility question rather than assuming it inherits everything on the basic account.

For a program such as Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection, do not infer eligibility merely from the words authorized user or Additional Card Member. Use the exact program language and confirm who must be the traveling cardholder at check-in.
Can an authorized user book Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection?
Hotel-program bookings have stricter conditions than simply possessing an additional card. Amex Travel’s U.S. booking terms require an eligible hotel booking to be made and paid for with an eligible card—or another American Express Card—in the eligible Card Member’s name. The eligible Card Member must also be traveling on the itinerary.

That means a booking can fail the benefit requirements if the eligible cardholder is not traveling, if the reservation is in another person’s name, or if the payment card and program do not match the terms. The person who checks in may need to be the eligible traveler and cardholder, so resolve the name requirement before paying a nonrefundable rate.

The same Amex Travel terms specifically identify Additional Card Members as eligible for Select Homes + Retreats on eligible Platinum and Centurion accounts. They also exclude companion cards and certain other additional-card types. This example demonstrates why a blanket statement that every authorized user receives every hotel benefit is inaccurate.
For Fine Hotels + Resorts, The Hotel Collection or another named program, check the live terms attached to the exact account and reservation channel. Ask the consultant to confirm three items: the eligible card product, whose name must appear as the booking cardholder, and who must be present as the traveler at check-in.
What do you need to enter a Centurion Lounge?
The current U.S. Travel Benefits FAQ lists three items for Platinum entry:
- A valid Platinum Card.
- A physical government-issued identification document.
- A confirmed same-day boarding pass showing a seat or zone assignment.
Have all three ready at the lounge. A reservation, an account screenshot or a boarding pass for a different day does not replace the published entry requirements.

How much do Centurion Lounge guests cost?
Under the published U.S. Consumer and Business Platinum policy checked on October 16, 2026, the charge is $50 for each guest age 18 or older and $30 for each child age 2 through 17. Children under age 2 are complimentary. These are current published amounts, not a promise that every lounge will use the same policy indefinitely; lounge-specific rules and American Express policy can change.
When are two guests complimentary?
After the account reaches $75,000 in eligible calendar-year purchases, the policy provides up to two complimentary guests per visit. The benefit can cover two guests together or fewer guests on separate visits, but it does not eliminate the requirement that the Platinum Card Member satisfy the lounge’s entry documents. The complimentary status applies for the remainder of the attainment year, the following year and through January 31 of the next year.
If the dashboard does not yet show the benefit, allow for the stated processing window: usually about one week, potentially up to 12 weeks. Until activation is visible, budget for the applicable guest charge.

The U.S. Travel FAQ describes consultant support for:
- Flight searches, Platinum Member Airfares, reservations and changes.
- Hotels, cars, cruises and vacation rentals.
- Travel alerts and document questions.
- Refund and payment questions.
- Reviewing or canceling trips through the My Trips area when online servicing is available.
A consultant cannot create airline seats or hotel inventory that is unavailable. If a requested result does not appear, ask about alternate dates, routes, carriers or properties and have the consultant explain any fare or cancellation restriction before you authorize a change.

Basic Card Member, Additional Card Member or guest: which role applies?

Use the role that matches the transaction. Adding someone as an Additional Card Member is not the same as bringing that person as a lounge guest, and neither status guarantees a hotel-program benefit without the required booking and traveler conditions.
Checklist before you book or visit
- Identify the exact card. Confirm whether it is U.S. Consumer Platinum, Business Platinum, Corporate Platinum or another product.
- Check the live benefits dashboard. Look for airfare eligibility, hotel-program terms, guest qualification progress and any activation date.
- Match names. For hotel benefits, make sure the eligible Card Member’s name is used for payment and booking and that the same eligible person is traveling.
- Choose the channel. Search AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App, or call the number on the back of the card and say Travel for consultant assistance.
- Prepare lounge documents. Bring the physical Platinum Card, physical government ID and a same-day boarding pass with a seat or zone assignment.
- Calculate guest costs. If the $75,000 threshold is not active, plan for $50 per adult guest, $30 per child age 2–17 and no charge for children under 2 under the published policy.
- Recheck volatile terms. Confirm fees, availability and program conditions immediately before travel because American Express can revise them.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The consultant says no airfare is available
Ask whether the issue is route coverage or seat inventory. Try different dates, nearby airports or another eligible carrier. The absence of a displayed fare alone does not establish that the Platinum account lacks the benefit.
Old-card spending is missing from the guest tracker
Verify that the account movement was an upgrade or downgrade into a Platinum Account and that the purchases were eligible. Processing can take up to 12 weeks. If the period has passed, contact the number on the card with the account transition date and transaction records.

Check the program’s specific additional-card language, the card type, the booking name, the payment card and whether that person is traveling. Some additional-card types are excluded even when another Additional Card Member is eligible.
A lounge agent will not admit a companion
Separate the cardholder’s entry from the companion’s status. Confirm that the Platinum Card Member has the required card, ID and same-day boarding pass, then ask which guest fee or complimentary-guest rule applies. Policies can differ by lounge and may change, so the current lounge determination controls.
Bottom line for upgrades, authorized users and guests
An eligible U.S. Platinum account can use American Express Travel Consultants by phone, and an upgrade does not erase eligible prior-account purchases when calculating the Platinum Complimentary Guest Access threshold. Beyond that documented spend rule, every airfare, hotel and lounge question turns on the exact card, program, traveler name, documents and current terms. Check those conditions before booking or arriving at the airport.
