Amazon has not made one single nuclear-power purchase. It has assembled a portfolio that combines power from an existing Pennsylvania reactor, a $500 million investment in advanced-reactor company X-energy, and plans for new small modular reactors in Washington. The strategy is designed to secure reliable electricity for expanding cloud and artificial-intelligence infrastructure while supporting Amazon’s carbon-reduction goals.
The distinction matters: some of the announced capacity is tied to an operating plant, while other figures are long-term targets that still depend on licensing, financing, construction, fuel supplies, and grid approvals.

Amazon’s overview of its nuclear strategy describes the Talen relationship, X-energy investment, and Energy Northwest plans together, but they are separate arrangements with different counterparties, technologies, and timelines. Amazon’s account of the strategy is therefore best read as a portfolio plan rather than evidence of one completed nuclear project.

In March 2024, Amazon Web Services reached an initial agreement with Talen Energy for electricity associated with the Susquehanna nuclear facility in Pennsylvania. Talen owns and operates the plant, and AWS also agreed to develop a data-center campus next to it. Public reporting put the original arrangement at roughly 960 megawatts.

This does not mean Amazon bought Susquehanna or receives all of the plant’s roughly 2.5 gigawatts of output. The public materials describe a defined power relationship involving part of the facility’s generation.
In June 2025, Talen announced an expanded power-purchase agreement under which it would supply carbon-free electricity from Susquehanna to AWS data centers. The arrangement covers the adjacent Amazon campus and could also serve other Pennsylvania sites, according to Talen’s announcement.
Descriptions of the arrangement have used terms such as “behind the meter” or colocated data-center power. Those labels should not be taken to mean that the project operates outside the electricity system. The exact interconnection, transmission, reliability, and cost-allocation rules remain important. A later federal regulatory decision rejecting a proposed expansion of the arrangement’s interconnection rights demonstrated that physical proximity to a nuclear plant does not automatically override grid rules. A Congressional hearing document summarizes that regulatory complication.
Why an existing plant matters
An operating reactor can provide electricity sooner than a new reactor because it already has a license, operating workforce, generating equipment, and established fuel and maintenance processes. A long-term corporate power contract can also provide revenue that helps support continued plant operation.

But a contract with an existing plant may preserve or redirect generation rather than add new electricity to the grid. The climate and grid impact depends on what power would otherwise have been produced, which customers are displaced, how the contract is settled, and whether additional generation or transmission is built.
The new-reactor bet: X-energy and Energy Northwest
On October 16, 2024, Amazon announced that its Climate Pledge Fund was the lead investor in a $500 million financing round for X-energy. The company is developing the Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled reactor and TRISO-X fuel.
Amazon connected that investment to plans with Energy Northwest to deploy four Xe-100 reactors in Washington. The initial project is generally described as approximately 320 MW, or four modules in the 80-MW-class range. Amazon has also said the broader program could eventually provide more than 5 GW of new nuclear capacity in the United States by 2039. That figure is a development target—not power that is already financed, licensed, under construction, or operating.
The project must still address regulatory approvals, environmental review, financing, construction schedules, supply-chain capacity, grid interconnection, and fuel availability. X-energy, Amazon, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and Doosan Enerbility announced a later partnership in August 2025 intended to accelerate deployment of Xe-100 reactors and TRISO-X fuel for U.S. data-center demand. X-energy’s announcement should be treated as a supply-chain and deployment partnership, not as proof that the planned reactors are operating.

Why technology companies want nuclear power
AI is increasing demand for firm electricity
AI training and inference require large clusters of servers operating at high power densities. Data-center developers are consequently seeking substantial, dependable electricity supplies at a time when transmission projects, generation additions, and grid interconnections can take years.
Forecasts differ widely. One U.S. government document reproducing EIA analysis cited scenarios in which U.S. data centers could account for roughly 12% of national electricity consumption by 2028. That is a scenario-based estimate, not a settled forecast; results vary with assumptions about AI adoption, efficiency, workload location, power density, and data-center design. The Department of Energy document provides the relevant context.
Nuclear provides around-the-clock generation
Nuclear plants can produce large volumes of electricity continuously, with low operational carbon emissions and relatively limited land use. That profile complements wind and solar, whose output varies with weather and time of day. Amazon describes nuclear as reliable and carbon-free for purposes of its corporate electricity strategy, but “carbon-free” in this context generally refers to electricity generation—not every emission associated with uranium mining, construction, fuel fabrication, decommissioning, waste management, or the wider supply chain.

Long-term contracts offer planning certainty
A long-term power-purchase agreement can give a data-center operator clearer visibility into electricity supply and pricing than reliance solely on short-term wholesale markets. For utilities and plant owners, a large customer can provide predictable revenue. That does not guarantee low prices for households or businesses: the outcome depends on contract terms, wholesale-market effects, transmission costs, subsidies, and how regulators allocate system expenses.

Clean-energy accounting is not the same as hourly physical supply
Technology companies have made extensive renewable-energy procurement commitments, but annual matching can differ from consuming clean electricity in every hour. Nuclear generation can help cover periods when renewable output is low. Still, a nuclear contract alone does not make an entire company—or every workload hosted on its cloud platform—carbon-free. The result depends on the contract structure, grid accounting, timing, and whether the agreement adds generation or reallocates existing supply.

Google’s Kairos agreement targets up to 500 MW from advanced reactors, with the first reactor planned for the end of the decade under the original announcement timetable. Google later announced a collaboration with Elementl Power to accelerate advanced-nuclear site development and retained an option for commercial power from completed projects; that is separate from the Kairos announcement. Google’s Elementl announcement provides those details.
Microsoft’s arrangement with Constellation centers on bringing the former Three Mile Island Unit 1 reactor back into service and purchasing its output. Meta’s 20-year agreement with Constellation is intended to support continued operation of the Clinton plant and secure 1,121 MW of nuclear power beginning in 2027. Meta has also said it is evaluating further nuclear development, including potential projects totaling 1 to 4 GW.
The questions that will determine whether the deals matter
Will announced capacity become delivered electricity?
Existing plants have a shorter path to delivery, although they still face refueling, maintenance, reliability, and regulatory issues. Advanced reactors face first-of-a-kind construction, licensing, financing, and manufacturing risks. A target for 2030, 2035, or 2039 is a schedule objective, not a guarantee.

Who carries construction and cost risk?
New reactors may require substantial upfront capital and could depend on government incentives, cost sharing, tax policy, or an anchor customer. If costs rise or schedules slip, the allocation of risk among Amazon, utilities, reactor developers, investors, and electricity customers will be central.
Does the arrangement add clean power?
The key additionality question is whether a deal builds new generation, preserves a plant that might otherwise close, or redirects existing output to a corporate buyer. Contractual clean-energy claims and physical grid effects are related but not identical.
How will other electricity customers be affected?
Large data centers can bring investment and jobs, but they can also increase local demand for generation, transmission, water, and grid upgrades. Regulators must decide how reliability obligations and infrastructure costs are shared, and whether colocated facilities receive treatment that disadvantages households or smaller businesses.

Some advanced-reactor designs require specialized fuels, including high-assay low-enriched uranium. Even a technically successful reactor program can face delays if fuel fabrication and upstream supply do not expand alongside reactor manufacturing.
What this means for households and investors
These announcements are not direct consumer energy products, and they do not automatically reduce an individual electricity bill. Their broader effects will depend on how much new generation is built, how grid upgrades are paid for, how power contracts affect wholesale markets, and whether additional demand pushes utilities toward new fossil-fuel generation while nuclear projects are delayed.
For investors, the headline capacity figures should not be treated as completed assets or guaranteed revenue. The relevant distinctions are between an operating plant, a contracted output stream, an investment in a developer, a proposed project, and a long-term program ceiling. Each carries a different mix of regulatory, construction, fuel, market, and execution risk.
Bottom line
Amazon is pursuing nuclear power on two timelines: existing nuclear generation for AWS in the near term, and investments and partnerships intended to create new reactor capacity for future AI-driven demand. Google, Microsoft, and Meta are making related moves, but their strategies differ. Across the industry, the large numbers combine operating plants, future contracts, proposed reactors, investments, and development targets. The practical test is not the size of an announcement; it is whether the project ultimately delivers additional, affordable, reliable, and genuinely low-carbon electricity.
