Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company’s October 2025 corporate layoffs were driven mainly by an organizational and cultural reset—not by an immediate push to replace workers with artificial intelligence.
That explanation needs some qualification. Amazon eliminated approximately 14,000 corporate roles in October, while also acknowledging that generative AI is changing how the company operates and could reduce its corporate workforce over the next several years. The distinction matters for employees, job seekers and investors trying to understand whether the cuts were a one-time restructuring or an early sign of a broader shift in white-collar work.
What Andy Jassy said about the layoffs
During Amazon’s third-quarter earnings call on October 30, 2025, Jassy addressed the corporate job cuts announced two days earlier. His explanation was direct:
“The announcement that we made a few days ago was not really financially driven, and it’s not even really AI-driven, not right now at least. It’s culture.”

Jassy said Amazon wanted to reduce organizational layers, cut bureaucracy and give employees more ownership. The intended result, he said, was a faster, more agile company that operated more like a “world’s largest startup.”
That is Amazon management’s stated rationale, not an independently established finding that culture was the sole cause. The company’s October 28 employee update described an overall reduction of approximately 14,000 corporate roles, with some departments shrinking while Amazon continued hiring in other areas.
What “culture” means in this context
Here, “culture” does not mean a workplace-perks program or a change to Amazon’s public values. It refers to how work is organized and how decisions are made.
Amazon said the restructuring was intended to:
- Remove layers of management and approval;
- Reduce bureaucracy and duplicated work;
- Increase individual and team ownership;
- Speed up decision-making; and
- Make the organization leaner while preserving investment in strategic areas.
In practical terms, a culture-driven restructuring can eliminate management positions, consolidate teams, change reporting lines and remove projects considered low-priority. It can affect employees even when a company is profitable and not imposing a broad hiring freeze.

That is different from saying that Amazon’s financial position was irrelevant. Cost, productivity and the ability to deploy capital are normally part of any large restructuring decision. Jassy’s narrower point was that the October announcement was not primarily a response to an immediate financial crisis or an AI project that had already replaced those specific employees.
Why AI is still part of the story
It would be inaccurate to conclude that AI had nothing to do with Amazon’s workforce plans.

In a June 17, 2025 memo, Jassy wrote that the rollout of generative AI and AI agents would likely reduce Amazon’s total corporate workforce over the following few years. Amazon’s October announcement also called generative AI the most transformative technology since the internet and said the company needed to become leaner and faster as the technology developed.
The clearest way to reconcile the statements is to separate the immediate explanation for the October cuts from the longer-term effect Amazon expects AI to have on corporate employment:
| Question | What the available statements indicate |
|---|---|
| Did Jassy say AI directly caused the October layoffs? | No. He said the cuts were not “really AI-driven, not right now at least.” |
| Does Amazon expect AI to reduce jobs eventually? | Yes. Jassy’s June memo said AI and AI agents were expected to reduce the corporate workforce over the next few years. |
| Did Amazon connect the restructuring to AI? | Yes. The October announcement said AI made a leaner, faster organization more important. |
| Was this a cut to Amazon’s entire workforce? | No. The announcement focused on corporate roles, not the company’s roughly 1.56 million total employees. |
So the defensible summary is not “Amazon fired 14,000 people because of culture instead of AI.” It is that Jassy described the October reduction as an immediate organizational and cultural decision, while Amazon separately expects AI to reshape and potentially shrink corporate employment over time.
How large were the cuts?
The October reduction affected approximately 14,000 corporate roles. That figure should not be confused with 14,000 jobs across Amazon’s warehouses, delivery network and other frontline operations.
At the time, reports estimated that Amazon had roughly 350,000 corporate employees inside a total workforce of approximately 1.56 million. The October cuts therefore represented a significant reduction in the corporate workforce, but not a similar percentage of all Amazon jobs.
Amazon later announced another approximately 16,000 corporate-role reduction on January 28, 2026. The company said some teams had completed their changes in October while others finalized their organizational plans later. Taken together, Amazon’s two official announcements described approximately 30,000 corporate roles affected across the two rounds.

Those announcements should be treated as separate events. The 30,000 figure is not a claim that all 30,000 roles disappeared in October.
What this means for Amazon employees and job seekers
For current and prospective employees, the announcements point to a selective labor market rather than a company-wide shutdown of hiring.
Amazon said it would continue hiring and investing in strategic areas even as other teams reduced headcount. That generally favors roles tied to areas such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, advertising and other priority businesses, although no team is automatically protected from future reorganizations.
Employees should not interpret “not AI-driven” as a guarantee that their role is safe from automation. A job can be affected indirectly when AI allows a smaller team to perform the same work, reduces the need for coordination or changes which skills management values. The relevant risk may arrive through a reorganization rather than a job posting that explicitly says “AI replacement.”
For workers evaluating an offer or planning a career move, useful questions include:
- Is the role in a revenue-producing or strategically expanding business?
- Does the position own measurable outcomes, or mainly coordinate approvals between teams?
- Will the work require judgment, customer knowledge or technical expertise that automation does not easily replicate?
- What severance, equity-vesting and benefits terms apply if the role is eliminated?
- How often has the team changed structure in the past two years?
These questions cannot predict an individual outcome, but they are more useful than relying on the label “AI job” or “non-AI job.”

What this means for investors
For investors, the layoffs signal management’s focus on productivity, speed and operating discipline. A leaner corporate structure could reduce overhead and improve execution if Amazon removes duplication without damaging innovation or customer service.
There are also risks. Repeated reorganizations can reduce morale, weaken institutional knowledge and make it harder to retain experienced employees. If the company cuts too deeply in areas that support products or customers, the short-term savings may create longer-term costs.

- Changes in operating expenses and corporate headcount;
- Productivity and revenue growth in Amazon’s major businesses;
- Whether Amazon continues hiring in strategic areas;
- Evidence that AI investment is producing measurable savings or new revenue; and
- Whether customer service, product development or execution deteriorates after the restructurings.
Jassy’s comments also suggest that Amazon sees AI as both a long-term productivity tool and a reason to redesign the organization. The company may not describe every job reduction as an AI layoff, even when AI changes the amount or type of work required.

Amazon’s January 2026 announcement addressed that concern. Beth Galetti said that announcing broad reductions every few months was “not our plan,” while adding that teams would continue evaluating ownership, speed and the capacity to invent.
That statement does not guarantee that there will be no further layoffs. It means Amazon presented the October and January changes as part of a broader restructuring process, not as a commitment to regular, recurring mass cuts.

The practical takeaway is to distinguish between three facts:
- Amazon announced approximately 14,000 corporate-role reductions in October 2025.
- Jassy said the immediate rationale was culture and organizational structure, not an AI-driven reduction “right now.”
- Amazon nevertheless expects AI to reduce some corporate employment over the coming years and has linked the technology to the need for a leaner organization.
FAQ
Did Amazon lay off 14,000 employees because of AI?
Not according to Andy Jassy’s explanation of the October 2025 cuts. He said the reduction was not primarily financially driven or AI-driven at that time and described it as a cultural and organizational reset. Amazon has separately said AI is expected to reduce its corporate workforce over the next several years.
Were the 14,000 Amazon layoffs company-wide?
No. The October announcement referred to approximately 14,000 corporate roles. It did not represent a 14,000-person reduction across Amazon’s entire warehouse, delivery and corporate workforce.
How many Amazon corporate roles were affected in total?
Amazon announced approximately 14,000 corporate-role reductions in October 2025 and approximately 16,000 more in January 2026. Together, the official figures total approximately 30,000 roles across two separate announcements.

Amazon characterized the restructuring as selective rather than a company-wide hiring freeze. It said some teams would shrink while the company continued hiring and investing in strategic areas.
The Bottom Line
Jassy’s “culture, not AI” explanation applies to the stated immediate reason for Amazon’s October 2025 corporate cuts—not to Amazon’s broader workforce outlook. The company wanted fewer layers, less bureaucracy and more ownership, but it has also warned that generative AI and AI agents could reduce corporate employment over the next few years. For workers and investors, the important distinction is between the cause Amazon assigned to this restructuring and the longer-term changes AI may bring.
