They differ in ownership, payoff, expiry, leverage, liquidity, fees, taxes and investor protections. Shares suit open-ended investing, options suit experienced users who need a defined expiry or hedge, and copy trading delegates decisions to another investor. Leveraged CFDs, spread bets and binary options can look similar but carry additional risks and may be unavailable or restricted where you live.
What you are replacing: an event contract
Prediction-market products are commonly called event contracts. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) says they have existed in regulated U.S. markets for more than two decades. They are derivatives whose value depends on a specified future event or outcome. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) describes event contracts as products with a binary financial outcome tied to a yes-or-no event.

A contract might settle at a preset amount if a stated condition occurs and at zero if it does not. Its market price is often interpreted as the crowd’s implied probability. The CFTC describes this as “Transparent Market-Driven Prices: A contract’s price reflects traders’ perceived probability of the event.” That price is not a guarantee, and it can move as information, liquidity and trading interest change.
Read the contract’s settlement rules, event definition, deadline, source of official data and dispute process before trading. Use an exchange or intermediary’s official website, as the CFTC advises, and confirm that the service is authorized in your jurisdiction. An event contract normally gives you no shares, dividends or continuing claim on the company.

How the main alternatives compare
| Feature | Shares or ETFs | Listed equity options | Copy trading or managed exposure | Event contracts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Shares provide ownership; ETFs provide diversified, indirect ownership of holdings | No direct ownership | Depends on the positions the manager or copied account holds | No ongoing ownership |
| Payoff | Market price change plus dividends when declared | Nonlinear payoff linked to a strike price; the premium can be lost | Depends on the strategy and execution | Usually a fixed yes/no settlement |
| Time horizon | Open-ended | Fixed expiry | Set by the strategy or your instructions | Defined event date or settlement condition |
| Leverage | Usually unlevered unless you borrow or use margin | Embedded leverage and premium risk | May involve leverage in copied positions | Your contract stake is generally at risk |
| Main risks | Business, valuation and broad market risk | Time decay, volatility, assignment and liquidity | Manager, execution, strategy and leverage risk | Binary loss, rule interpretation and platform or regulatory risk |
| Best fit | Long-term ownership or diversified exposure | A defined-risk directional or hedging view for experienced users | Delegated execution or following a strategy | Short-horizon event speculation |
1. Shares or ETFs: the ownership-based alternative
Buying individual shares
Buying a company’s common stock gives you an ownership interest. Your result comes from the share price, any dividend the company declares and the company’s longer-term ability to generate cash. You can keep the position indefinitely rather than waiting for a single event date.
This is the most direct choice when your thesis is “this business will become more valuable over several years,” rather than “one announcement will meet a narrowly defined condition.” A disappointing quarter can reduce the price, but a strong product cycle, improving margins or sustained cash generation can benefit the position after the original event has passed.
Using an ETF instead of one company
An exchange-traded fund (ETF) can spread exposure across a sector, index or theme. The diversification reduces the effect of one company’s earnings miss, lawsuit or management problem, although it also dilutes the impact if your chosen company substantially outperforms the rest of the holdings. Check the fund’s objective, holdings, concentration, expense ratio, trading spread and rebalancing method.

How to take a share or ETF position
- Define the thesis and horizon. Write down what you expect to improve, the time frame and what evidence would invalidate the idea.
- Check the instrument. Confirm the ticker, exchange, share class, currency, dividend policy and whether an ETF is accumulating or distributing where that distinction applies.
- Choose an order type. A market order prioritizes execution but not price; a limit order sets a maximum purchase price but may not fill.
- Size the position. Keep a single-company holding small enough that an adverse result will not derail your overall plan.
- Review periodically. Reassess the business facts and valuation, not every intraday price movement.
Shares and ETFs do not guarantee a return. A company can fail, an apparently cheap stock can become cheaper, and a diversified fund can fall during a market-wide decline. Borrowing to buy shares adds margin-call risk and changes the otherwise unlevered profile.

2. Listed equity options: a time-limited, more complex view
What calls and puts do
A listed call gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy shares at a specified strike price before or at an expiry, depending on the contract style. A put gives the buyer the right to sell at the strike. The buyer pays a premium; that premium can fall to zero even if the company remains sound.
Options can express a directional view with less upfront cash than purchasing the underlying share exposure represented by the contract. That apparent efficiency is leverage, not a free discount: a relatively small move in the stock, a volatility change or the passage of time can produce a large percentage change in the option.
Option terms to understand before trading
| Term | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying | The stock or ETF whose price drives the contract | Corporate actions and trading halts can affect the option |
| Strike | The contractual buy or sell price | Determines whether the option has intrinsic value |
| Expiry | The final date or time for the stated rights | After expiry, an unexercised option generally has no remaining time value |
| Premium | The price paid by the buyer and received by the seller | The buyer can lose the entire premium |
| Assignment or exercise | How the contract is converted into a share transaction | A short option can create an obligation and require cash or shares |
| Implied volatility | The volatility level embedded in the market price | A volatility drop can hurt an option even when the stock moves your way |
| Liquidity | How readily you can trade near the displayed price | Wide bid-ask spreads increase entry and exit costs |
A simple earnings example
Suppose a stock trades at $50 before earnings. A call with a $52 strike and a $1.20 premium gives the buyer a bullish, expiry-limited position. Ignoring contract multipliers, fees and early exercise, the stock must rise sufficiently above $53.20 at expiry to cover the premium. If it finishes below $52, the call can expire worthless and the buyer loses the premium. The exact break-even and settlement mechanics depend on the listed contract and its multiplier.
A put can be used when you expect a decline or as insurance for shares you already own. Selling options is a different risk profile: the premium received is limited, while the obligation created by assignment can be substantial. Do not sell uncovered options until you understand margin rules, assignment and worst-case loss.

A safer learning workflow
- Use an approved, regulated brokerage account. Brokers normally assess your experience and assign an options permission level.
- Read the standardized contract information. Confirm exercise style, multiplier, settlement method, expiry and assignment rules.
- Start with defined-risk positions. A purchased call, put or debit spread limits the initial premium at risk, although that premium can still be lost in full.
- Model several outcomes. Calculate results for a price rise, a flat price, a decline, a volatility change and different exit dates.
- Check the spread and open interest. A quoted price is not the same as a guaranteed fill for your order size.
- Set an exit and loss rule before the announcement. Earnings releases can create gaps that bypass your intended price.
Investor education from CIBC notes that options may support portfolio risk management or income strategies. That does not mean an option is interchangeable with an event contract: an option’s value changes continuously, can be sold before expiry and may create delivery or assignment obligations.
3. Copy trading and managed exposure
What copy trading means
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) defines copy trading as automatically copying another investor’s trades. You are expressing a view indirectly: the important decision is whose process and risk controls you follow, rather than which company position you select yourself.
Depending on how the service is structured, copy trading may be treated as portfolio or investment management. The label used by an app does not determine the legal status. Verify the operator’s authorization with your local regulator and identify which entity holds your cash and assets.
Due-diligence checklist
- Authorization: confirm the firm and the specific service appear on the relevant regulator’s register.
- Client-asset protection: read where assets are custodied, what segregation applies and what compensation scheme, if any, is available.
- Execution: find out whether trades are copied at market, proportionally, with a delay or subject to minimum size.
- Leverage: check whether the model account uses margin, CFDs or other leveraged instruments.
- Costs: identify management, performance, spread, financing, withdrawal and inactivity charges.
- Drawdown: review the largest historical decline, stop-copy controls and what happens when the manager changes strategy.
- Conflicts: determine whether rankings, payments or incentives affect which strategies are displayed.
- Exit: understand how to stop copying and whether closing positions creates tax or settlement consequences.
Past performance is not a reliable forecast. A copied account can trade at a different price from the displayed historical record, and a manager may change instruments or risk faster than you can react. Treat copy trading as delegated execution, not as a guarantee that another person can predict earnings.

Products requiring extra caution
CFDs and financial spread betting
Contracts for difference (CFDs) and financial spread bets provide price exposure without owning the shares. They can use leverage, so a small move against you can consume your margin quickly; financing charges and forced liquidation can add to the loss. Availability, consumer protections and tax treatment vary by country. If a provider cannot clearly explain its authorization, margin policy, negative-balance protection and total costs, do not deposit funds.
Binary options
Binary options offer an all-or-nothing outcome and can resemble an event contract. ASIC’s Moneysmart service reports that an Australian Securities and Investments Commission review found about 75% of retail clients lost money trading binary options; the page does not state the review year. Its warning page reports that 74–77% of active retail binary-option investors lost money, also without stating a year in the retrieved material. These figures are specific to the cited Australian reviews and should not be generalized to every country or product.
Binary-option websites may operate across borders or outside local supervision. Check the regulator’s warning list and licensing register, avoid unsolicited offers and never assume that a polished interface means client funds are protected.

Fantasy-stock and pre-IPO claims
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has warned about fantasy-stock websites that promise real returns and described enforcement involving contracts tied to pre-IPO company liquidity events. A claim that a product is “just a game” or “not an investment” does not remove the need to investigate its legal structure, custody arrangements and regulator.

ESMA has reminded firms that existing product-intervention obligations for binary options can apply as prediction markets grow. Regulatory treatment is product- and jurisdiction-specific, so read the local rules rather than relying on a platform’s marketing description.
Choosing the right alternative
| Your objective | Usually the most coherent starting point | Question to answer first |
|---|---|---|
| Participate in a company’s long-term growth | Shares | Can I tolerate business and valuation risk for an open-ended period? |
| Reduce single-company risk while keeping sector exposure | A diversified ETF | How concentrated are the fund’s holdings and what does it cost? |
| Express a view through a known date with limited initial loss | A purchased option or defined-risk spread | Can I lose the entire premium, and do I understand time decay? |
| Follow a researched process without selecting each trade | Authorized copy trading or managed portfolio | Who controls the money, and what is the maximum drawdown? |
| Speculate on one narrowly defined outcome | An event contract, only where authorized and understood | Are the settlement rules, data source and dispute process clear? |
Compare every candidate on six practical dimensions: ownership, payoff shape, expiry, leverage, liquidity and total cost. Then add taxes and investor protection. A product with a small advertised entry amount can still be expensive if spreads, financing, management charges or unfavorable tax treatment are significant.
Pre-trade checklist
- State the company view in one sentence and identify the evidence that would prove it wrong.
- Choose an instrument whose time horizon matches the thesis; do not use a one-day contract for a multi-year belief.
- Confirm the provider’s legal entity, authorization, custody arrangement and complaint route.
- Write down the maximum cash loss, including premium, margin and possible assignment.
- Check bid-ask spreads, trading hours, market depth and what happens during a halt or major announcement.
- Record all commissions, platform fees, financing, fund expenses and withdrawal charges.
- Understand the tax rules that apply to your country, account type and instrument before trading.
- Use only money you can afford to lose and avoid borrowing until you understand liquidation risk.
Bottom line
For most people who want an investment rather than a one-time wager, shares or a diversified ETF are the clearest alternatives to an event contract. Listed options can provide a precise, expiry-based view but demand knowledge of premium loss, time decay, volatility and assignment. Copy trading can reduce the burden of selecting trades, while adding manager, execution and regulatory risks. Leveraged CFDs, spread bets and binary options are not simpler substitutes; they can magnify losses and may lack protection. Match the product to your objective, verify authorization and understand the complete payoff before committing money.
