You can do rigorous investment research and portfolio analysis without making a generative-AI chatbot the primary engine. A durable process combines primary documents such as SEC filings, structured financial-data platforms, portfolio risk and attribution systems, and reproducible analysis in Python or R.
Each option solves a different problem. Filings provide auditability, data platforms provide breadth and normalization, portfolio systems provide exposure and risk reporting, and code provides transparent calculations you can test and rerun. The strongest setup uses them together rather than searching for one universal replacement.

What to use instead of generative AI
The right alternative depends on the decision you are making. Security selection needs reliable company facts, definitions, estimates and comparable-company data. Fund due diligence needs holdings, performance, fees, benchmark context and manager information. Portfolio oversight needs exposures, attribution, liquidity, stress tests and repeatable reporting. No single product covers all of those needs equally well.
A practical non-generative workflow has four layers:
#1 Best Overall
- Compact & Portable Design: This Small Excel, Word, PowerPoint, & Windows Cheat Sheet Mouse Pad measures 11.8" x 9.8", offering a portable mouse pad. Its compact size fits in bags or laptop cases, suitable for professionals, students, or travelers.
- Multi-Software Shortcut Guide: Featuring essential shortcut keys for Excel, Word, PowerPoint, & Windows, this small mouse pad provides a quick reference for frequently used shortcuts, offering a reference designed to support workflow efficiency
- Smooth & Precise Surface: The finely-textured surface ensures precise mouse control, allowing for smooth and accurate movement during work or gaming sessions.
- Durable & Non-Slip Design: This Multi-Software Shortcut Mouse Pad features stitched edges to reduce fraying. The non-slip rubber base helps keep it securely in place, and the water-resistant fabric allows for easier maintenance.
- Clear Print Quality: Displays high-resolution printing intended to remain legible through regular use and cleaning
- Primary sources: SEC filings and fund disclosures for definitions, accounting policies, risks and footnotes.
- Structured data: A research platform that standardizes company, market, estimate, ownership or holdings data for screening and comparison.
- Portfolio analytics: A system that measures performance, factor exposures, attribution, liquidity and scenarios across positions.
- Reproducible code: Python or R scripts that document calculations, preserve assumptions and allow independent validation.
Generative AI can still be used as a convenience layer for summarization or navigation, but it should not be treated as the source of record for a number, definition or investment conclusion.
How the main alternatives differ
| Alternative | Primary strength | Best fit | Main limitation to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEC EDGAR and other primary documents | Direct, auditable disclosures and footnotes | Investors who need to verify claims and accounting definitions | Manual extraction, inconsistent company language and calculations you must maintain |
| Morningstar Direct | Managed-investment due diligence, performance reporting and presentation workflows | Fund selectors, wealth managers, consultants and asset-management teams | Universe coverage, holdings depth, screening flexibility and data freshness vary by entitlement |
| S&P Capital IQ Pro | Standardized corporate, financial and market data | Equity research, screening, comparable companies and cross-company analysis | Source lineage, estimate coverage, private-company data and export/API access require verification |
| Bloomberg PORT | Multi-asset portfolio risk, attribution and reporting | Institutional or professional teams monitoring portfolios | Model transparency, data entitlements, integration effort and licensing |
| Bloomberg BQuant | Python environment for custom analytics using Bloomberg and external data | Analysts building factors, event studies, screens and diagnostics | Requires code maintenance, data controls, testing and appropriate permissions |
| Python or R with public or licensed data | Customization, transparency and reproducibility | Investors willing to build and maintain their own research stack | Data acquisition, cleaning, corporate actions, security identifiers and operational support |
Current comparable prices were not published in the cited materials. Treat licensing, user-seat limits, implementation charges and data entitlements as items to confirm directly with each provider rather than as fixed market prices.
Start with primary-source research
What filings add
SEC EDGAR gives you the underlying 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, proxy and fund disclosures. These documents show how a company defines revenue, adjusted earnings, segments, debt, liquidity and non-GAAP measures. They also contain risk factors, legal proceedings, related-party transactions, share-count details and footnotes that can disappear when a third-party database compresses information into a field.

For a fund, the relevant filings and reports can include registration documents, shareholder reports, holdings disclosures and regulatory statements. Read them to confirm the fund’s objective, benchmark, derivatives use, concentration limits, expenses, turnover and liquidity language.
A filing-based research procedure
- Define the decision. Write down whether you are evaluating a stock, a bond issuer, a fund, an allocation or a risk change. The decision determines which documents and periods matter.
- Collect point-in-time documents. Record the filing date, reporting period, amendment status and any restatement. Do not silently replace an older value with a later restated number when testing what was knowable at the time.
- Build a definition sheet. For every key metric, note the exact filing label, units, period, currency, accounting basis and whether the figure is reported or adjusted.
- Extract supporting detail. Tie headline figures to tables and footnotes. Check segment eliminations, discontinued operations, stock compensation, acquisition effects and changes in accounting policy.
- Reconcile vendor data. If a platform’s value differs from the filing, retain both values, investigate the definition and document which one your model uses.
- Preserve an audit trail. Store the document identifier, page or section reference, extraction date and transformation applied to each research input.
Where primary documents are not enough
Filings are authoritative for what the issuer disclosed, not a complete market-data system. They do not by themselves provide clean historical prices, a consistent estimate history, standardized identifiers, complete peer universes or portfolio-level factor exposures. That is where structured data and code add value.

S&P Capital IQ Pro for structured corporate analysis
S&P Global positions Capital IQ Pro as an aggregation of corporate, financial and market data for investment and strategic analysis. Its buy-side materials describe standardized data for quantitative models and machine-learning pipelines, together with credit and textual-data products.
This type of platform is useful for screening public companies, building comparable-company sets, tracing financial histories and combining fundamentals with market or ownership fields. Test the source lineage for each field, estimate and ownership coverage, private-company depth, export or API rights and how identifiers map into your portfolio system. A normalized field is efficient, but it still needs a definition and a source you can explain.
When a structured platform is justified
Add a commercial data platform when manual collection or a spreadsheet can no longer maintain the required universe, history, normalization or reporting cadence. The value is usually operational: less time cleaning identifiers and more consistency across analysts. It is not a substitute for reading the source document or challenging a model assumption.

- Which positions, sectors, countries, currencies or factors drove performance?
- How much active risk is the portfolio taking relative to its benchmark?
- What happens under a rate, spread, equity, currency or commodity shock?
- Where are liquidity constraints or concentration limits likely to bind?
- Can the same report be generated on a schedule with permissions and an audit trail?
Bloomberg says its risk and attribution models are created and continually refined by a team of globally recognized experts for multi-asset institutional analysis. That statement describes the provider’s positioning; you still need to understand the model, inputs, treatment of derivatives and handling of missing or stale prices.
Questions to ask before adopting a portfolio system
- Which instruments, benchmarks, currencies and asset classes are covered?
- Are factor definitions and risk-model versions visible to users?
- How are cash, derivatives, look-through holdings and illiquid assets treated?
- Can you reproduce a historical report using the data and model available on that date?
- What permissions, retention rules and integrations are available for orders, compliance and client reporting?
- How are data corrections, corporate actions and restatements communicated?
Use Python or R for transparent quantitative research
What code can replace generative reasoning
Python and R let you express an investment rule as executable, reviewable logic. You can calculate returns, exposures, valuation ratios, factor scores, event-study results, drawdowns, turnover, transaction-cost assumptions and scenario outcomes without asking a model to invent a narrative.
Bloomberg identifies BQuant as a Python-based environment for building, testing and deploying custom analytics with Bloomberg and external data. That supports a workflow in which the analyst owns the calculation and preserves the code. Python and R can also work with public or separately licensed datasets outside Bloomberg.
Core components of a reproducible project
- Data dictionary: Define every field, unit, currency, frequency, identifier and missing-value treatment.
- Point-in-time controls: Use only information available on each test date. Store announcement, filing and vendor-ingestion timestamps where relevant.
- Versioned inputs and code: Keep immutable data snapshots or hashes, record code versions and log parameter changes.
- Corporate-action handling: Specify how splits, dividends, mergers, delistings, ticker changes and restatements enter the series.
- Validation tests: Check ranges, duplicate records, look-ahead leakage, survivorship bias, benchmark alignment and reconciliation to an independent source.
- Out-of-sample evaluation: Separate research, validation and evaluation periods. Report turnover, costs, capacity and drawdowns, not only returns.
- Human review: Inspect unusual observations and read the underlying filing before converting a statistical result into an investment decision.
Methods that predate generative AI
Morningstar’s 2026 review notes that factor models, natural-language processing applied to earnings filings, alternative-data processing and machine-learning signal generation have been part of quantitative investing for more than two decades. These methods do not require a generative model to write an investment thesis. They require explicit datasets, documented transformations, a defined target and validation against data the model did not see.
The International Monetary Fund’s 2025 technical note describes Python as open source and widely preferred for alternative and unstructured data analysis, including corporate disclosures and social-media sentiment. The same note warns that common datasets and methods can increase the risk of correlated strategies and herding. A reproducible process improves accountability; it does not eliminate crowded-trade risk.

Step 1: Specify the decision and horizon
State the instrument, benchmark, holding period, decision date, constraints and success measure. “Research this company” is too broad to test. “Decide whether the company can fund maturities over the next three years” identifies the documents, ratios and scenarios required.

Step 2: Establish the source hierarchy
Use the issuer or regulator for definitions and disclosures, a structured provider for breadth and normalization, and your own code for calculations. Record which source wins when two values disagree.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStep 3: Screen before deep reading
Apply transparent filters for size, liquidity, geography, sector, valuation, leverage, quality or mandate eligibility. Save the exact universe and filter date so another analyst can reproduce the candidate list.
Step 4: Read and annotate primary documents
For each candidate, capture the business model, revenue drivers, risks, capital allocation, debt schedule, dilution, accounting judgments and management discussion. Link each material conclusion to a section of the document in your internal notes.
Step 5: Calculate independent metrics
Recompute the ratios or factor scores that drive the decision. Compare your result with the platform’s field, investigate differences and avoid mixing fiscal periods or currencies.
Step 6: Analyze portfolio consequences
Map the candidate into current holdings. Measure marginal exposure, factor overlap, concentration, liquidity, tracking error and scenario impact. A statistically attractive security can still be unsuitable if it duplicates an existing risk.
Step 7: Challenge the thesis
Write disconfirming evidence, key sensitivities, invalidation conditions and the data that would change your view. Run bear, base and stress cases with explicit assumptions rather than a single point estimate.

How the stack changes by use case
Individual stock research
Start with filings and a structured company-data platform for history, peers and estimates. Use Python or R to calculate valuation, quality, momentum or event-study measures. Add portfolio analytics only when the decision depends on interactions with existing holdings.
Fund selection and due diligence
Prioritize a managed-investment platform such as Morningstar Direct for universe comparison, performance reporting and presentation workflows. Verify the fund’s own disclosures, benchmark, holdings date, expenses, derivatives and liquidity terms. Use code to test persistence, drawdowns, overlap and scenario behavior rather than accepting a rating as a complete thesis.
Recommended Free Tools
Institutional portfolio monitoring
A portfolio system such as Bloomberg PORT becomes more valuable when multiple asset classes, accounts, benchmarks, reporting schedules and control functions must be coordinated. Pair its outputs with source-level checks and a documented risk-model policy.
Custom factor or alternative-data research
Use BQuant, Python or R when the edge depends on a factor definition, text transformation, event window or data source that standard screens cannot express. Budget for data cleaning, identifier mapping, tests, monitoring and periodic model review.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Failure mode | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Using a normalized field without checking its definition | Platforms make unlike accounting treatments look comparable | Read the field methodology and reconcile a sample to filings |
| Look-ahead or survivorship bias | Historical tests use today’s universe or revised data | Apply point-in-time membership, timestamps and immutable snapshots |
| Treating a risk score as a thesis | A single number hides assumptions and exposures | Inspect factor contributions, scenarios, source data and limitations |
| Ignoring liquidity and implementation | Research focuses on expected return only | Model spreads, market impact, turnover, capacity and exit conditions |
| Overfitting custom signals | Many variations are tested until one looks successful | Predefine hypotheses, hold out data and report all meaningful tests |
| Herding around shared data | Many investors use the same datasets and methodologies | Track crowding, seek independent evidence and diversify research inputs |
| Uncontrolled spreadsheet logic | Manual edits and undocumented formulas accumulate | Move repeatable calculations into tested code with version history |
Costs, licensing and implementation
Free primary documents have low direct cost but require analyst time and technical maintenance. Commercial platforms can reduce cleaning and reporting work, yet total cost depends on users, modules, asset classes, API rights, data entitlements, implementation and support. None of the cited materials provides a current comparable price schedule, so obtain a written quote for your exact scope.
Before sharing data or automating a decision, review redistribution rights, account permissions, audit trails, retention rules and whether external data may be combined with vendor data. A technically elegant model can still violate a license or fail an internal-control review.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choosing the smallest adequate stack
For a self-directed investor, SEC filings plus a carefully documented spreadsheet or Python notebook may be enough for a limited watchlist. Add a structured platform when peer screening, historical normalization or fund comparisons consume more time than the investment decision. Add a portfolio analytics system when exposures, attribution, stress testing or recurring reports span many positions and accounts. Add BQuant or a comparable coding environment when custom analytics justify the ongoing engineering and governance work.
The goal is not to remove judgment. It is to place judgment where it can be inspected: in source selection, definitions, assumptions, model design, validation and portfolio decisions. That separation makes the process more auditable than relying on generated prose and more adaptable than accepting a vendor’s default score as the answer.
