Alternatives to a Tech-Heavy Portfolio: Equal-Weight, Value, and International ETFs

If a few U.S. technology and mega-cap stocks dominate your portfolio, three ETF approaches address different problems: an equal-weight S&P 500 fund reduces the influence of the largest companies, a large-cap value fund adds a factor and sector tilt, and an international fund adds stocks outside the United States. They are not interchangeable and none guarantees smaller losses.

The right choice depends on whether your priority is concentration, investment style, or geography. Before buying, compare each fund’s index rules, rebalance schedule, expenses, trading spread, tax consequences, and overlap with what you already own.

Start with the problem you want to solve

A portfolio can look diversified because it owns hundreds of companies while still being driven by a small group of very large technology and technology-adjacent businesses. The three ETFs discussed here change that exposure in distinct ways.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Reduce concentration: Equal-weight U.S. exposure keeps the S&P 500 universe but gives each constituent the same starting weight.
  • Add a value tilt: A large-cap value ETF emphasizes companies classified as value stocks, producing a different sector mix and factor exposure.
  • Add international exposure: An ex-U.S. ETF owns developed and emerging-market companies, changing the portfolio’s geographic and currency exposure.

Those objectives can overlap, but they are not substitutes. Equal weighting does not add foreign stocks. Value investing does not automatically reduce country risk. International diversification can still include a meaningful technology allocation and can fall at the same time as U.S. stocks.

The figures are snapshots, not permanent allocations. Holdings, sector weights and index composition change as markets move and providers rebalance.

RSP: equal weight changes concentration, not geography

How the index works

RSP uses the same S&P 500 constituents as the capitalization-weighted index. At each quarterly rebalance, every company is assigned a fixed 0.2% weight. A company that has grown unusually large therefore receives a smaller weight than it would in a conventional S&P 500 fund, while smaller constituents receive more.

The approach changes the distribution of weight inside the U.S. large-cap universe; it does not change the universe itself. You still own U.S. companies selected for the S&P 500, not a separate collection of small-cap or foreign stocks.

Why sectors are not equal

Equal company weights do not produce equal sector weights. A sector with many S&P 500 constituents receives more aggregate weight than a sector with only a few. The fund’s sector exposure therefore reflects the number and market performance of companies in each sector, rather than a rule that assigns every sector the same percentage.

When RSP can help

  • Your existing S&P 500 or total-U.S. fund is dominated by a handful of mega-cap names.
  • You want to retain broad U.S. large-cap exposure while reducing the effect of the largest companies.
  • You accept that the equal-weight strategy will behave differently from the standard capitalization-weighted S&P 500.

Costs and performance behavior to expect

Quarterly rebalancing requires selling companies that have become larger relative to the other constituents and buying companies whose relative weights have fallen. That creates turnover and can produce taxable distributions in a taxable account, depending on the fund’s realized gains and your jurisdiction. It can also cause RSP to underperform a capitalization-weighted S&P 500 fund during periods when the biggest companies lead the market. Equal weighting is a concentration adjustment, not a promise of higher returns or lower volatility.

VTV: a value tilt with a pronounced sector mix

What it owns

VTV tracks the Morningstar US Large Cap Value Index. Vanguard’s fact sheet dated September 30, 2026 lists 298 stocks and a 0.03% expense ratio. The selection process targets large-cap companies identified as value stocks rather than simply assigning a different weight to every S&P 500 company.

The cited sector allocation

The same fact sheet reports financials at 21.2%, industrials at 15.8%, health care at 15.6% and technology at 10.6%. Those figures explain why VTV can reduce a portfolio’s technology concentration: technology is a smaller share than in many broad, capitalization-weighted U.S. funds, while financials, industrials and health care receive larger roles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A value allocation is not a neutral substitute for the market. Its returns can be driven by interest rates, credit conditions, economic growth, commodity cycles and investor preferences for growth versus value. A company can remain classified as value while its business or sector is facing serious challenges.

When VTV can fit

  • You already have broad U.S. exposure but want a deliberate large-cap value allocation.
  • You are comfortable accepting periods in which growth stocks outperform value stocks.
  • You want a sector mix that, in the cited September 30, 2026 snapshot, places more weight in financials, industrials and health care and less in technology.

Risks specific to a value tilt

Value and growth leadership rotate. A value fund can lag for years while investors pay high prices for companies expected to grow rapidly. Conversely, value can lead when economically sensitive or financially oriented companies recover. Because VTV’s sector weights are not evenly distributed, a shock to a major sector can affect the fund even if the overall U.S. stock market is stable.

VXUS: the geographic lever

What international exposure adds

VXUS tracks the FTSE Global All Cap ex US Index. “Ex US” means the index excludes U.S. companies and includes developed and emerging markets elsewhere. It therefore adds companies whose revenues, currencies, regulators, political systems and economic cycles differ from those in the United States.

Vanguard’s product information reported technology at 17.00% as of July 31, 2026. International exposure can therefore lower a portfolio’s dependence on U.S. mega-cap technology without eliminating technology altogether.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Risks that come with the diversification

  • Currency: Returns measured in U.S. dollars change when foreign currencies rise or fall against the dollar.
  • Country and political risk: Governments can change market rules, taxes, ownership limits or capital controls.
  • Regional cycles: Interest rates, demographics, commodities and recessions do not occur on the same schedule in every region.
  • Market structure: Trading hours, accounting practices, liquidity and disclosure standards can differ by country.
  • Emerging-market volatility: Developing markets can experience sharper price moves and wider trading spreads.

International diversification can improve the balance of a portfolio over a full cycle, but it can also underperform U.S. stocks for extended periods. It is not a short-term hedge against every U.S. market decline.

Choosing among the three approaches

Choose equal weight when concentration is the central problem

RSP is the most direct response when your concern is that a few enormous U.S. companies determine too much of your result. It leaves your country exposure and broad company universe largely intact, so it is less useful if your portfolio also lacks foreign stocks.

Choose value when style and sector balance are the objectives

VTV is appropriate when you intentionally want large-cap value characteristics and accept their cycles. It can reduce technology’s share, but the resulting portfolio may be more sensitive to financials, industrials, health care and the economic conditions that influence those industries.

Choose international when your allocation is U.S.-centric

VXUS addresses a different gap: ownership of companies beyond the United States. It introduces currency and country risks in exchange for a broader opportunity set. It is the relevant lever if your main diversification concern is geography rather than the size of individual U.S. holdings.

Use more than one only when each has a defined job

Combining the funds can be rational if you can state the purpose of every allocation. For example, an investor might use equal weight to alter U.S. concentration and an ex-U.S. fund to add foreign markets. Adding VTV as well creates a third, intentional factor tilt. Without a written target, the combination can become an accidental collection of overlapping U.S. stocks and unmonitored sector bets.

How to evaluate an ETF before buying

  1. Map your current exposure. List every stock and fund, then identify how much of the portfolio is in U.S. large caps, technology, the largest individual companies and non-U.S. markets. Look through fund holdings rather than relying only on fund names.
  2. Name the problem in one sentence. Use “reduce concentration,” “add a value tilt” or “add international exposure.” If none describes the objective, pause before buying.
  3. Read the index methodology. Confirm the eligible universe, weighting formula, rebalance frequency, inclusion rules and treatment of corporate actions. RSP’s 0.2% constituent weight at quarterly rebalance is materially different from market-cap weighting; VTV’s value index and VXUS’s ex-U.S. global index solve different problems.
  4. Check the dated portfolio snapshot. Record sector weights, number of holdings and geographic mix with the date attached. VTV’s cited figures are from September 30, 2026, while VXUS’s technology figure is from July 31, 2026; they should not be treated as forecasts.
  5. Compare recurring costs. Review the expense ratio, trading spread and any account-level charges available through your brokerage. The cited VTV fact sheet reports a 0.03% expense ratio; no current expense ratios for RSP or VXUS are provided here, so obtain those directly from their current fund documents.
  6. Review implementation and tax effects. ETF shares trade on an exchange through a brokerage account and can trade above or below their net asset value during the day. Consider bid-ask spreads, order type, account type, realized gains and distributions before placing an order. Tax rules depend on your jurisdiction and circumstances.
  7. Set a target and a review rule. Decide the maximum and minimum allocation you will tolerate, how often you will review it, and what event would trigger rebalancing. A written rule helps prevent buying after a run-up or abandoning an allocation after a period of underperformance.

Trading, tracking and rebalancing considerations

ETF shares are market-traded securities

You buy and sell ETF shares through a brokerage account during exchange hours. The market price can be higher or lower than the value of the underlying holdings, especially during volatile markets or when foreign markets are closed while the ETF continues trading. A limit order can specify the highest purchase price or lowest sale price you will accept, but it does not guarantee execution.

Tracking difference matters

An ETF can trail its index because of its expense ratio, transaction costs, portfolio sampling, withholding taxes, corporate actions and the timing of rebalances. Compare the fund’s stated objective with its historical tracking difference and the index methodology, rather than assuming that two funds with similar names deliver the same exposure.

Rebalance deliberately

RSP’s index itself rebalances quarterly, but that does not mean an investor should trade every quarter. Your personal rebalancing schedule should reflect your target allocation, taxes, trading costs and risk tolerance. VTV and VXUS also change as holdings, prices and index rules change, so review the actual portfolio rather than relying on an old allocation label.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling equal weight a sector-neutral strategy: equal company weights do not equalize sectors.
  • Treating value as a safety label: value stocks can be cyclical, indebted or concentrated in challenged industries.
  • Assuming international means no technology: VXUS still reported 17.00% technology as of July 31, 2026.
  • Using a fund as a guaranteed hedge: all three are equity ETFs and can lose value.
  • Comparing stale figures: sector weights and holdings need dates; a current fact sheet should replace an old snapshot.
  • Ignoring overlap: owning a broad U.S. fund, RSP and VTV may still leave you with many of the same companies.
  • Focusing only on the expense ratio: spreads, turnover, taxes, tracking and the quality of the exposure also affect results.
  • Making a country bet unintentionally: an international allocation includes different regional weights and emerging markets, not a single uniform “foreign” market.

A practical decision checklist

  • Is the dominant risk the weight of a few U.S. mega-cap companies?
  • Do you specifically want large-cap value characteristics and their sector exposures?
  • Is your portfolio missing developed and emerging markets outside the United States?
  • Can you tolerate an approach that underperforms the familiar U.S. benchmark for a long period?
  • Have you checked the latest prospectus, holdings, index methodology, expense ratio and spread?
  • Will the purchase be in a taxable account, retirement account or another structure with different tax treatment?
  • What allocation will you maintain if the chosen approach falls while another part of the market rises?

Answering those questions separates a purposeful allocation from a reaction to recent headlines. Equal weight, value and international ETFs can each reduce a particular dependence, but the trade is always a different pattern of equity risk rather than the removal of risk.
