Walmart’s Sparky can help you find products and handle some service requests, but it is not the final authority on your order. Signed-in U.S. customers can use Sparky in the Walmart app to discover products, compare options, summarize reviews, locate an order, start a return, report a broken or missing item, or correct an order quantity. Walmart also warns that AI mistakes can happen, so verify the item, seller, quantity, price, fulfillment method, and order record before relying on an answer.
Most Walmart purchases have a 90-day return window after purchase or receipt, unless an exception applies. Marketplace sellers can set different rules and handle their own customer service. Substitutions have their own process: you can accept, decline, or return one, but a delivery driver cannot take an unwanted substitution back at the door.

What Sparky is—and what it can actually do
Sparky is Walmart’s named artificial-intelligence shopping assistant. Walmart describes it as using advanced AI models to understand conversational questions, suggest relevant products, answer shopping questions, synthesize reviews, and make recommendations based on your preferences. It is accessed in the Walmart app by signed-in customers in the United States; availability, features, and responses can change as Walmart updates the service.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Sparky is also becoming a service interface rather than only a product-search tool. Daniel Danker, Walmart’s Executive Vice President for AI Acceleration, Product and Design, said on January 13, 2026 that customers use it when they cannot find an order, need to return something, receive a broken item, or realize they ordered one unit when they meant to order two. Those examples describe help that connects to your Walmart account and order history, not a general-purpose chatbot that can change any transaction without verification.
#1 Best Overall
Walmart’s own guidance is explicit: “While Sparky is designed to be as accurate as possible, mistakes can happen.” Treat an answer as a convenient starting point. The order page, the seller’s policy, and Walmart’s published return rules control what you are actually entitled to receive.
Before you place an AI-assisted Walmart order
Natural-language shopping is useful when you know the result you want but not the exact product. For example, you can ask for a low-sodium pantry item, a laptop with a particular port, or a comparison of two similar products. Before submitting the order, perform a manual check because recommendations can differ from the item you thought you selected.
- Open the exact item page. Confirm the model, size, color, count, condition, and any included accessories rather than relying on a conversational description.
- Check who sells it. The listing should identify whether Walmart or a Marketplace seller is responsible for fulfillment and service. This affects return instructions and exceptions.
- Verify quantity. Review each line in the cart. If Sparky interpreted “two” as a two-pack, or changed the number of units, correct it before checkout.
- Compare price and fees. Confirm the current item price, delivery or pickup charges, taxes, and any membership or promotion conditions shown at checkout.
- Choose fulfillment deliberately. Pickup and delivery have different substitution and handoff rules. Make sure the selected store, delivery address, time window, and fulfillment method are correct.
- Set substitution preferences. If the order allows substitutions, select your preference and review any “accept substitutes” setting before placing the order.
- Save the order record. Keep the confirmation and order number. A Walmart.com or Walmart Business order number, or a receipt for an in-store purchase, is commonly needed for service.
How to use Sparky when an order goes wrong
Start with the order record instead of asking the assistant to guess which transaction you mean. The exact labels can vary by app version, but Walmart’s documented service flow is tied to your purchase history and the order-help area.

- Open Purchase History and select the affected order.
- Open the order’s help or support options. For a wrong or missing product, choose Missing or Incorrect Items.
- Describe the item, the quantity expected, and what arrived. Include delivery details and photographs when packaging, damage, or a wrong model is relevant.
- Follow the offered resolution, such as a refund, replacement, or return. Save the confirmation number and any instructions about keeping or disposing of the item.
Walmart’s Help Center also separates paths for canceled orders, delayed orders, orders that were not received, and undeliverable orders. Choose the path that matches the event; a missing item inside a delivered order is different from an order that never arrived.

Walmart’s standard return rule: generally 90 days
Walmart’s return policy, updated October 9, 2026, generally gives customers 90 days after purchase or receipt to return an item unless an exception applies. Bring a receipt for a store purchase or provide the Walmart.com or Walmart Business order number for an online purchase. Approved refunds generally go back to the original form of payment.
The 90-day period is a general rule, not a guarantee that every product can be taken to a store. Product category, seller, condition, shipping method, and special handling can change the process. Check the item-specific return information attached to the order before sending anything back.
Walmart-sold versus Marketplace-sold items
| Question | Sold by Walmart | Sold by a Marketplace seller |
|---|---|---|
| Who is responsible for service? | Walmart’s order and support channels generally handle the transaction. | The seller is responsible for processing, shipping, returns, and customer service for its order. |
| Return window | Generally 90 days, unless a product exception applies. | The seller may publish a different return policy; check the listing and order details. |
| Where to start | Purchase History, the order-help flow, or Walmart’s Help Center. | Start from the order’s Marketplace return or contact-seller instructions; Walmart may still provide account-level support. |
| Store return eligibility | Some items can be returned through a Walmart store, subject to the policy. | Not every Marketplace item can be returned to a Walmart store. |
Marketplace rules are especially important for oversized, hazardous, collectible, luxury, or freight items. Walmart’s policy says some of these products may not be returnable to a store at all. The seller’s instructions can require a particular carrier, authorization, packaging, or destination. Do not ship a Marketplace item to a Walmart store or warehouse unless the order specifically tells you to do so.
Substitutions: pickup and delivery work differently
A substitution occurs when the ordered product is unavailable and Walmart supplies a different item. Depending on the order and fulfillment method, you may be able to accept it, decline it, or accept it and later return it. The key difference is what happens at handoff.
Rank #3
| Situation | What you can do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup substitution you do not want | Tell the store associate at pickup that you are declining the substitution so it can be removed. | Do this before leaving with the order when possible. |
| Delivery substitution you do not want | Accept the delivery only if you choose to keep it; otherwise start a return through Purchase History. | The delivery driver cannot remove the item from your order at the door. |
| Substitution you accepted but later reject | Use the normal return workflow for that order and item. | The applicable seller and item exception rules still apply. |
For pickup
Inspect substitutions while the store associate is completing the handoff. If the replacement is the wrong size, brand, flavor, or quantity, say that you do not want it. The associate can remove the declined item according to the pickup workflow, avoiding a separate return in many cases.
For delivery
Do not expect the driver to take a bad substitution back. Walmart’s substitution instructions direct you to begin a return in the app or on Walmart.com: open Purchase History, select the order, and choose the return option for the substituted item. Keep the item and packaging until the return instructions tell you otherwise. If the substitution is damaged, unsafe, or materially different, photograph it and describe the issue in the return or missing/incorrect-item form.
Missing, wrong, damaged, or extra items
Missing item from an otherwise delivered order
Open the order’s help area and select Missing or Incorrect Items. State exactly which line item is absent and whether the package appears opened or incomplete. A delivery photo can show where the order was left, but it does not prove that every item was inside the package, so identify the missing product and quantity clearly.

Wrong item or wrong quantity
Use the same help path and distinguish a wrong product from a quantity error. For example, “ordered two, received one” is a quantity correction; “ordered the 13-inch model, received the 15-inch model” is an incorrect-item report. Sparky may help initiate the request, but confirm the selected order and remedy before submitting it.
Rank #4
Broken or unsafe item
Photograph the damage, outer box, shipping label, and any safety seal. Do not use an item that could cause injury or property damage. The order-help flow may offer a replacement or refund; Marketplace sellers can provide different instructions, so follow the seller-specific process shown in the order.
Order never arrived
Use the Help Center’s separate path for an order that was not received rather than reporting a single missing line item. Check the delivery status, address, and delivery photo first, then report the non-delivery through the account tied to the order.
Refunds: destination is clear, timing may not be
For an approved return or correction, Walmart generally sends the refund to the original form of payment. The policy information summarized here does not promise one universal number of days for every card, bank account, digital wallet, or Marketplace transaction. The time shown in your return confirmation and the posting time used by your payment provider are therefore more useful than a generic estimate.
- Keep the return confirmation until the credit appears on the original payment method.
- Check whether the refund is for the item price, tax, shipping, or a partial amount; the confirmation should identify what was approved.
- If the order contains several sellers or separate shipments, expect separate return or refund records.
- If the stated refund has not appeared after the timeframe in your confirmation, contact Walmart or the Marketplace seller with the order and return numbers, then ask your card issuer or bank to trace the pending credit.
When Sparky’s answer conflicts with the policy
Use this escalation sequence when the assistant says an item is returnable but the order page says otherwise, or when a promised refund does not match the policy.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Capture screenshots of Sparky’s answer, the item page, the seller name, the order status, and the relevant return-policy text.
- Check whether the item is Walmart-sold or Marketplace-sold and whether an exception category applies.
- Reopen the order through Purchase History and use the specific missing, incorrect, return, or non-delivery path rather than a general chat question.
- Contact Walmart Help Center support, or the Marketplace seller where the order directs you, and provide the screenshots and order number.
- Do not discard an item, packaging, or shipping label until support confirms that no return is required or gives disposal instructions.
AI self-service is useful for speed and navigation; human support is the appropriate escalation when a policy exception, seller dispute, damaged merchandise, or account-specific correction is involved.
Can you shop Walmart through ChatGPT?
On October 14, 2025, Walmart and OpenAI announced a partnership for shopping through ChatGPT using an Instant Checkout experience. The announcement describes a future integration, not proof that every customer can currently browse Walmart’s full catalog or complete every purchase inside ChatGPT. Availability, supported products, account requirements, payment flow, and geographic access must be confirmed in the product interface when offered.
The announcement also reported Walmart’s internal results and company scale: AI applications were cutting customer-care resolution times by up to 40%, and AI-enhanced product catalogs reduced fashion-production timelines by up to 18 weeks. Walmart described approximately 270 million weekly customers and members, more than 10,750 stores, fiscal-year-2025 revenue of $681 billion, and approximately 2.1 million associates. Those figures explain the scale of the partnership; they do not change the return rules for an individual order.
