Yes. A properly registered and configured .ai domain works for websites, HTTPS, email, APIs, redirects, CDNs and ordinary DNS services just as a .com does. The important differences are who administers each suffix, what the name signals to visitors, how public registration data is exposed, and whether a particular corporate or software policy accepts it. Choose .ai when an AI association and a usable name outweigh the familiarity of .com; choose .com when the broadest generic-web recognition is the priority.
What actually differs between .ai and .com?
Both endings are top-level domains (TLDs) in the Domain Name System. A browser does not use a special “AI protocol” for a .ai address. It asks DNS for records associated with the complete hostname, then connects to the destination those records identify. The same process applies to .com.

| Registry manager | Government of Anguilla, according to IANA’s root-zone database | Delegated as a generic TLD in IANA’s root-zone database; operation and contracted-party obligations sit within ICANN’s gTLD framework |
| Registration eligibility | Unrestricted; WIPO’s .AI page states, “Registration of ".ai" domain names is unrestricted.” | Generally open through accredited registrars, subject to the registry and ICANN rules that apply to the chosen registrar and name |
| Common brand signal | Artificial intelligence, machine learning or a technology product | Familiar, general-purpose internet business |
| DNS operation | Standard DNS delegation and records | Standard DNS delegation and records |
A registry runs the TLD itself: it publishes the zone and its rules. A registrar is the company through which you buy, renew, transfer and manage a particular registration. Those are different roles; your registrar’s interface and support do not determine whether the suffix is technically compatible with the internet.

Who owns and controls a .ai domain?
The registry is administered by Anguilla
IANA identifies the Government of Anguilla as the manager of the .ai country-code TLD. That means Anguilla’s registry policy governs the namespace. It does not mean a registrant must live in Anguilla or operate there. WIPO explicitly describes .ai registration as unrestricted.
Your registration is a right to use a name, not ownership of the suffix
When you register example.ai, you receive control of that domain for the paid registration term, subject to renewal, transfer, dispute and registry rules. You do not own the .ai TLD itself. The same distinction applies to a .com registration: the registry and ICANN policy framework remain separate from the registrant’s use of a particular name.
Disputes and label rules
The WIPO information for .ai describes ASCII label requirements and UDRP dispute procedures. Check the current registrar and registry terms before relying on a particular character, transfer or dispute assumption. A domain that looks available can still be restricted by trademark, reserved-name or dispute rules.
Can anyone register a .ai domain?
Yes, registration is unrestricted under the policy statement cited by WIPO. No Anguillan residency requirement is established by that rule. You still need to satisfy the registrar’s identity, payment and anti-abuse checks, and the name must be available and compliant with the registry’s technical rules.

- Search the exact name. Check the desired
.aiand.comlabels, then search defensible alternatives such as a product name plus a clear descriptor. - Read the renewal and transfer terms. Registration, renewal, redemption and transfer conditions can differ by registrar and can change; confirm them at checkout and save the policy.
- Enable account security. Use a unique password, multifactor authentication and registrar account-lock features where offered.
- Record the registrant and administrative contacts. Keep those details current so you can recover the domain or approve a transfer.
- Delegate DNS deliberately. Either use the registrar’s DNS service or enter the authoritative nameservers of your chosen DNS provider.
Buying a name does not automatically create a website, mailbox or API endpoint. Those services become reachable only after DNS records and the destination systems are configured.
How resolution works for .ai and .com
When someone requests app.example.ai, the resolver follows the DNS hierarchy. The root points to the .ai nameservers; those nameservers point to the domain’s authoritative nameservers; the authoritative service returns records such as A, AAAA, CNAME, MX or TXT. The process for app.example.com is the same, with the .com delegation in the hierarchy.
IANA’s root data lists authoritative nameservers for .ai and a DS record, demonstrating active delegation and DNSSEC support at the TLD level. A DS record at the parent does not sign every individual domain automatically: the domain owner must publish matching DNSSEC material through the DNS provider and registrar. AWS documentation lists .ai as supported for registration and provides DNSSEC configuration guidance.

Compatibility: what .ai can do, and what you must verify
| Use case | What is technically supported | What to check before launch |
|---|---|---|
| Website or web app | Use A, AAAA or a provider-required CNAME, then configure the host at your web platform. |
The platform’s hostname rules, DNS instructions and any domain-verification token. |
| HTTPS | Obtain a certificate for the exact domain or subdomain and configure the server or CDN to serve it. | Certificate authority validation, renewal automation and coverage of every hostname, including www and API names. |
Publish MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records and configure the mailbox provider. |
Recipient filtering, alignment of the visible From domain with SPF or DKIM, and the provider’s accepted-domain policy. | |
| API and SaaS integrations | Use ordinary DNS and HTTPS endpoints. | Partner allow-lists, callback URL validation, webhook signature settings and any hard-coded TLD restrictions. |
| CDN, redirects and hosting | Standard custom-domain onboarding works when the provider supports the hostname. | Whether the service accepts the suffix, requires a CNAME at the apex through an ALIAS-like feature, or imposes certificate limits. |
| DNSSEC | .ai has parent-level DS support, and DNS providers can guide signing. |
Registrar support for DS changes, key-rollover procedures and a tested recovery plan for a misconfigured signature. |
Neither suffix guarantees acceptance by every corporate filter, email provider or software allow-list. Those are policy decisions made by the service operator. Test the exact services your project depends on rather than treating a TLD-wide assumption as a compatibility test.
Set up an HTTPS .ai site step by step
- Register the name and choose authoritative DNS. Confirm which nameservers are active; editing records at a non-authoritative provider has no effect.
- Add the host at your web host or CDN. Enter both the apex (for example,
example.ai) and any required subdomains such aswww.example.ai. - Publish the requested DNS records. Use the provider’s exact
A,AAAA,CNAMEor verificationTXTvalues. Do not add extra records from a different service. - Issue the certificate. Select the exact hostnames, complete DNS or HTTP validation, and confirm the certificate chain is installed on the endpoint that serves traffic.
- Test both HTTP and HTTPS. Check the apex,
www, every API hostname and redirects. Confirm that an unknown hostname does not receive the wrong certificate or site. - Automate renewal and monitor expiry. A certificate is valid for the name on it, not for every future subdomain. Keep renewal credentials and DNS access available.
Set up email on a .ai domain
- Add the domain in your mail provider. The provider will give you one or more
MXrecords and verification values. - Publish the
MXrecords exactly. Remove obsolete mail exchangers only after confirming that all required mailboxes have migrated. - Create SPF. Publish one SPF policy for the domain that includes every legitimate sending service. Multiple SPF records cause evaluation failures.
- Enable DKIM. Add the provider’s selector record, usually a
CNAMEor longTXTvalue, and turn signing on in the mail system. - Add DMARC gradually. Start with monitoring if you are still discovering senders, review aggregate reports, then move to a stricter enforcement policy when legitimate traffic passes alignment.
- Send and receive test messages. Inspect authentication results, envelope-from behavior and alignment. Test major recipients and any business-critical forwarding path.
A .ai ending does not bypass spam controls. Reputation, authentication, message content, sending volume and recipient policy still determine delivery.
WHOIS, RDAP and privacy differences
The .AI FAQ directs registrants to WHOIS and confirms RDAP support. RDAP is the standardized successor to WHOIS, as ICANN explains, but the public result is still shaped by registry policy, registrar implementation and privacy rules.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ICANN states that, from 2025-01-28, gTLD registries and registrars generally no longer have to provide WHOIS, with continuing exceptions for .com, .name and .post. Consequently, a .com lookup and a .ai lookup can expose different fields or use different interfaces even when both domains are active and correctly registered.

The .AI FAQ says privacy or proxy services are permitted. Whether a service is available, what it masks and what may be disclosed under law or policy depends on the registrar and the applicable rules. Treat privacy as a feature to verify during registration, not as an automatic property of the suffix.
How large is the .ai namespace?
The .AI FAQ reported 598,007 registered domains as of 2025-01-02. Earlier figures on that FAQ were 572,575 on 2024-11-27, 533,068 on 2024-10-01 and 478,696 on 2024-07-01.

Choosing between .ai and .com
Choose .ai when the name and positioning are stronger
- Your product is explicitly about artificial intelligence or machine learning, and the suffix helps a visitor understand it immediately.
- The exact .com is unavailable, confusingly similar to another organization or materially harder to communicate.
- Your customers, partners and internal systems have been tested and accept the hostname.
- You can budget for the registrar’s current renewal price and maintain the domain for the life of the product.
Choose .com when universal familiarity is the safer signal
- The business is broad, consumer-facing or likely to expand beyond AI.
- Customers routinely type addresses from memory, or offline advertising must work with minimal explanation.
- Enterprise procurement, legacy software or strict allow-lists make policy testing difficult.
- You want the generic-web association rather than a technology-specific cue.
Consider holding both
If the budget and naming situation allow, register the primary name in one suffix and defensively register the other when it is available and legally appropriate. Redirect the secondary domain, keep its renewal current and publish a single canonical hostname so search engines and users do not encounter duplicate sites. Owning both does not replace checking trademark conflicts or monitoring look-alike registrations.

Migration and continuity planning
- Inventory dependencies. List websites, APIs, mobile-app endpoints, OAuth redirect URLs, webhooks, certificates, email senders, support links and printed material that contain the old hostname.
- Lower DNS TTLs before the change. Do this while the old service is healthy, allowing cached answers to expire more quickly during the cutover.
- Provision the new hostname first. Add it to every host, CDN, certificate, mail system and SaaS integration before changing public links.
- Publish and verify DNS. Check authoritative answers for
A,AAAA,CNAME,MXandTXTrecords from more than one resolver. - Run parallel tests. Confirm browser access, API authentication, webhook callbacks, outbound and inbound email, SPF/DKIM/DMARC results and certificate coverage.
- Redirect and update references. Use permanent redirects for web pages, update canonical tags and change hard-coded application URLs, documentation and customer notices.
- Keep the old domain active. Maintain it for renewals and redirects long enough to catch forgotten links, and monitor logs for requests still arriving there.
- Raise TTLs and document ownership. Once stable, restore normal TTLs and store registrar, DNS, certificate and recovery details in an access-controlled record.
Troubleshooting a .ai domain that “doesn’t work”
The browser says the domain does not exist
- Confirm the registration is active and not expired or suspended.
- Check that the domain’s delegated nameservers match the DNS provider where you edited records.
- Query the authoritative nameservers directly for the expected record, then compare results through independent recursive resolvers.
- Allow for the record’s TTL and negative caching after correcting an error.
HTTPS shows a certificate warning
- Verify that the certificate includes the exact hostname being visited, including whether it is the apex or
www. - Confirm DNS points to the endpoint where the certificate was installed, not an old host or CDN.
- Complete the certificate authority’s validation again if a DNS token was removed or changed.
Mail is rejected or lands in spam
- Check that
MXrecords point only to the active provider. - Ensure there is one valid SPF record and that every sender is authorized.
- Confirm DKIM signatures pass and that the visible From domain aligns with SPF or DKIM for DMARC.
- Review recipient-specific policies; a rejection based on a corporate allow-list is not evidence that DNS for
.aiis broken.
A SaaS integration refuses the hostname
- Read the provider’s current custom-domain and callback-URL requirements.
- Ask support whether the restriction is a temporary validation bug, a security policy or an unsupported TLD.
- Use a tested subdomain or alternate endpoint only if it preserves authentication, certificate coverage and a clear customer-facing URL.
DNSSEC causes intermittent failures
- Compare the DS record at the parent with the DNSKEY set served by the authoritative provider.
- Remove or correct stale DS data before changing nameservers, following the registrar’s key-rollover procedure.
- If you cannot maintain the chain safely, disable signing through a controlled change rather than leaving an invalid signature published.
Costs, renewals and long-term control
Registration and renewal prices, redemption fees, transfer charges, supported DNS features and privacy options vary by registrar and can change. The available evidence does not establish a reliable price comparison between .ai and .com, so check the current renewal—not only the first-year offer—before choosing a name.
For a business domain, continuity is usually more important than a small introductory difference. Set calendar reminders, enable auto-renewal with a monitored payment method, keep recovery contacts current and document who can access the registrar and DNS accounts. A domain that expires can take down web traffic, APIs, password resets and email even when the hosting systems themselves are healthy.
A practical decision checklist
- Does the suffix accurately describe the product’s purpose today and after planned expansion?
- Have you searched both exact names, close spellings and relevant trademarks?
- Is the name available at a registrar whose renewal, transfer and privacy terms you understand?
- Can your website, certificate authority, mail provider, CDN and SaaS partners accept the exact hostname?
- Have you tested corporate filters, customer login links, OAuth redirects and webhook callbacks?
- Will you publish SPF, DKIM and DMARC and monitor their results?
- Do you have a DNS, certificate and domain-expiry recovery plan?
When those checks pass, .ai is a normal, globally resolvable choice rather than a compatibility compromise. When a project values the most familiar generic address or depends on unchangeable legacy allow-lists, .com remains the lower-friction choice.
