Short answer: AGNC Investment’s monthly dividend is a distribution set by its board, not a contractual coupon. The latest records show a declared $0.12 per common share each month from January 2025 through October 2026, but that history does not guarantee the next payment. Sustainability depends on mortgage-portfolio income after financing and hedge costs, changes in tangible book value, leverage, prepayments, liquidity and AGNC’s ability to maintain its REIT status.
AGNC is a mortgage real estate investment trust (mREIT), so the dividend has to be evaluated as one part of a leveraged mortgage-bond strategy. A useful assessment asks whether the company is preserving economic value while paying shareholders—not simply whether the last monthly payment stayed unchanged.

What AGNC’s monthly dividend actually represents
AGNC Investment Corp. primarily owns Agency residential mortgage-backed securities (MBS). These securities represent interests in pools of home loans. Guarantees from Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac or Ginnie Mae substantially address principal-and-interest credit losses when borrowers fail to pay. They do not stop the market price of an MBS from changing, and they do not remove interest-rate, prepayment, extension or funding risk.
AGNC finances much of its portfolio with repurchase agreements and uses derivatives and other positions—including interest-rate swaps and short Treasury positions—to hedge portions of its exposure. The spread between what the mortgage assets earn and what financing and hedges cost is central to the company’s earnings power. Leverage magnifies both favorable and unfavorable changes in that spread and in asset prices.

That structure makes the monthly dividend an output of portfolio management. It is not the same as interest on a bank deposit, a bond coupon that is contractually fixed, or a guaranteed return of capital. The board can change, suspend or otherwise adjust the common distribution.
The latest AGNC dividend and operating figures
The following figures are dated so that the payment record is not confused with a current promise. The latest operating release in the available record covers the quarter ended June 30, 2026; the dividend-history record extends through an October 2026 declaration.
| Measure | Reported figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Common dividend | $0.12 per share per month, January 2025–October 2026 | Declared distributions listed in AGNC’s dividend history; not a guaranteed future amount |
| October 2026 schedule | October 7 declaration; October 30 ex-dividend and record dates; November 10 payment | Dates for that declared distribution, subject to verification before relying on them |
| Investment portfolio | $97.2 billion as of June 30, 2026 | Size of the mortgage and related investment portfolio reported for Q2 2026 |
| Tangible net book value | $8.58 per common share as of June 30, 2026 | Company-reported tangible equity value per share; it moves with market values and hedges |
| Net spread and dollar roll income | $0.40 per common share for Q2 2026 | A non-GAAP measure; it is not automatically GAAP earnings, taxable income or cash available for dividends |
| Tangible net book value at-risk leverage | 7.4x at June 30, 2026 | Company-defined leverage using specified debt, TBA and unsettled positions divided by adjusted equity |
| Q2 economic return on tangible common equity | 6.7% | AGNC’s measure combining $0.36 of dividends and a $0.20 increase in tangible book value per share |
The $0.12 amount is a dividend per share, not a dividend yield. Yield changes whenever AGNC’s share price changes, even if the declared payment remains $0.12. No current share price is supplied here, so a precise yield cannot be calculated from these figures alone.

Why AGNC pays monthly
An mREIT receives principal and interest cash flows from mortgage assets at various times during the month. Paying monthly allows AGNC to distribute cash more frequently than a quarterly schedule and can appeal to investors seeking regular income. The frequency itself does not make the payment safer. A board could choose a different schedule or amount if earnings, financial condition, liquidity or regulatory requirements changed.
AGNC’s 2025 Form 10-K says the company intends to make monthly common distributions but has not established a minimum common dividend. It states that distributions are made at the board’s discretion and can be affected by earnings, financial condition, REIT qualification and other factors. A long run of equal payments therefore demonstrates only what the board has declared so far.

How the mortgage strategy produces—or erodes—dividend capacity
Asset yield versus financing and hedge costs
Mortgage securities generate interest income, but AGNC funds them largely through short-term repo borrowing. The economic spread narrows when repo rates rise, when hedge costs increase or when mortgage assets earn less than expected. A narrow spread leaves less room to support a distribution after operating expenses and other adjustments.
Interest-rate swaps and short Treasury positions can offset some rate exposure. A hedge is not free and is not perfect: its value can rise or fall differently from the MBS portfolio, and hedge costs can reduce income. The company’s reported spread-income measure should therefore be read alongside financing costs, hedge results and the change in tangible book value.
Prepayment and extension behavior
When homeowners refinance or sell, mortgage principal can return earlier than expected. Faster prepayments can accelerate the amortization of premiums paid for MBS and force AGNC to reinvest at less attractive yields. Slower prepayments keep loans outstanding longer, extending the duration of assets and potentially increasing sensitivity to rising rates. These are mechanics, not a forecast of the next quarter, but they directly affect future income and valuation.
Market value and tangible book value
Even with Agency credit guarantees, MBS prices move as interest rates, mortgage spreads, volatility and liquidity change. Gains or losses on assets and hedges flow into the company’s economic value. Tangible net book value of $8.58 per common share at June 30, 2026 is a point-in-time measure, not a floor under the stock price or a promise that the next quarter will be higher.
What 7.4x leverage means for a dividend investor
AGNC reported 7.4x tangible net book value at-risk leverage at June 30, 2026. The ratio is company-defined: it incorporates investment repo, other debt, net to-be-announced (TBA) and forward-settling securities, and unsettled securities, divided by equity adjusted to exclude goodwill. U.S. Treasury repo is excluded from that calculation.
Rank #3
This definition matters because another mREIT could calculate leverage differently. At roughly seven dollars of specified exposures for each dollar of adjusted tangible equity, relatively small percentage changes in MBS prices, funding costs or hedges can have a much larger effect on equity per share. Leverage can enhance income when spreads cooperate, but it can also accelerate book-value losses and pressure financing or risk limits when markets move against the portfolio.

There is no single company-reported number that proves coverage for common shareholders. AGNC reported $0.40 per common share of Q2 2026 net spread and dollar roll income, while declaring $0.36 per share of dividends in that quarter. Those figures are useful context, but the $0.40 measure is non-GAAP and should not be treated as GAAP net income, taxable income or distributable cash without a defined reconciliation.
A responsible review also considers realized and unrealized gains or losses, financing and hedge costs, expenses, preferred claims if applicable, asset sales, liquidity and the trend in tangible book value. A one-quarter comparison can be misleading if prepayments, rate moves or settlement timing temporarily change results. The available records do not establish what AGNC will pay in a future month.
Why total return is more informative than the dividend alone
AGNC reported a 6.7% economic return on tangible common equity for Q2 2026. Chief Financial Officer Bernice Bell described that result as consisting of $0.36 of dividends per common share and a $0.20 increase in tangible net book value per common share. This company-defined measure illustrates why a dividend-only scorecard is incomplete: an investor can receive cash while book value falls, or receive the same cash while book value rises.
For an investor, total economic return combines distributions with the change in per-share book value. Share-price return can differ further because the stock may trade above or below tangible book value. A high indicated yield cannot compensate indefinitely for shrinking book value or rising leverage.

How to assess whether a future cut is becoming more likely
No indicator predicts a board decision by itself. Use a consistent checklist after each quarterly report and dividend declaration.
- Dividend policy: Read the latest filing for any change to the statement that there is no minimum common dividend and that the board controls distributions.
- Spread income: Track net spread and dollar roll income, but keep its non-GAAP definition separate from GAAP earnings and taxable income.
- Tangible book value: Compare the latest per-share figure with prior quarters. A sustained decline can reduce the equity cushion supporting leverage.
- Leverage: Note both the level and the company’s calculation. Rising leverage can amplify returns and losses.
- Funding: Examine repo costs, maturity structure and liquidity. A portfolio can own valuable assets and still face pressure if short-term financing becomes expensive or unavailable.
- Hedges: Review whether swaps and Treasury positions offset the portfolio’s rate exposure and what those hedges cost.
- Prepayments and asset yields: Faster or slower prepayments can change premium amortization, duration and reinvestment income.
- Economic return: Include both declared dividends and the change in tangible book value rather than ranking quarters by cash payment alone.
Key risks that remain despite Agency guarantees
Interest-rate risk
Changes in short- and long-term rates can move MBS prices, hedge values and funding costs in different directions. A hedge can reduce sensitivity without eliminating it.
Spread and liquidity risk
Mortgage spreads can widen even when Treasury rates are stable. Wider spreads reduce asset values, and stressed markets can make transactions more costly or difficult.
Prepayment and extension risk
Borrower refinancing and turnover alter the timing of principal cash flows. Those changes affect premium amortization, asset duration and the yield available when principal is reinvested.
Leverage and repo risk
Borrowing magnifies portfolio exposure. Repo lenders can change haircuts, collateral requirements or pricing, forcing an mREIT to reduce positions at unfavorable times.

Distribution-policy risk
The board is not committed to a minimum common payment. A reduction can occur even after a period of stable declarations if earnings, financial condition, liquidity or REIT requirements change.
Practical answers to common AGNC dividend questions
What is AGNC’s dividend per share?
The dividend-history record lists $0.12 per common share each month from January 2025 through October 2026. That is the declared amount in those records, not a commitment beyond the listed declarations.
Does AGNC’s Agency portfolio make the dividend safe?
No. Agency guarantees substantially reduce borrower credit-loss exposure, but they do not remove interest-rate, mortgage-spread, prepayment, extension, leverage, liquidity or financing risk.

Can the $0.40 Q2 spread-income figure be used as dividend coverage?
Not without qualification. It is a non-GAAP measure and is not automatically equivalent to GAAP earnings, taxable income or cash distributable to common holders. It must be read with book-value changes, financing, hedges, expenses and the company’s policy.
What should I check before buying for income?
Confirm the latest declared amount and dates, then review the newest quarterly figures for tangible book value, leverage, spread income, funding costs, hedges, liquidity and total economic return. Treat the board’s discretion and the absence of a minimum dividend as central facts, not footnotes.
