AGG ETF Today: Why the Yield Looks Attractive—and How Losses Can Still Happen

AGG can look appealing because its income is materially higher than during the ultra-low-rate era, but it is not a cash substitute or a guaranteed-value bond holding. As of October 9, 2026, the fund’s 30-day SEC yield was 5.11%, while its effective duration was 5.69 years. That combination means investors are being paid meaningful income to accept continuing exposure to interest-rate, mortgage, credit and liquidity risk. AGG can therefore deliver attractive income and still lose principal when market yields rise, credit spreads widen or investors sell during a broad risk-off move.

What AGG is—and what it is not

AGG is the iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF, traded on NYSE Arca. Its objective is to track the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, a broad benchmark for the U.S. investment-grade bond market. The index included 13,972 issues on February 28, 2026, according to the fund’s June 29, 2026 summary prospectus. Eligible securities include U.S. Treasury and government-related bonds, corporate bonds, mortgage-backed securities (MBS), commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) and asset-backed securities (ABS). The index is market-capitalization-weighted and rebalanced on the last business day of each month.

AGG uses representative sampling rather than owning every index security. Its return can therefore differ from the index because of sampling, fees, trading costs, cash balances and portfolio-management effects. The fund does not promise that your investment will retain a particular dollar value. BlackRock’s product materials state that principal fluctuates and that an investor may receive more or less than the original investment when selling.

Most holdings are investment grade, but that label does not remove market risk. Investment-grade bonds can fall when Treasury yields rise, when corporate spreads widen, when mortgage prepayments change expected cash flows or when liquidity deteriorates.

Read the June 29, 2026 summary prospectus for the fund’s formal objective, principal risks and operating details.

Why AGG’s yield looks attractive

Several yield statistics appear on the fund page, and they answer different questions. The 30-day SEC yield is a standardized recent-income measure; the trailing yield reflects distributions paid over the prior 12 months; and yield to maturity estimates the return from current prices and scheduled cash flows if bonds are held to maturity, subject to assumptions and changes in the portfolio.

Measure Reported value Date and meaning
30-day SEC yield 5.11% October 9, 2026; standardized recent-income measure, not a guaranteed return
12-month trailing yield 4.19% October 9, 2026; distributions paid over the prior year
Average yield to maturity 5.49% October 9, 2026; portfolio estimate based on current holdings and assumptions
Effective duration 5.69 years October 9, 2026; measure of sensitivity to yield changes, not a loss limit
Option-adjusted spread 29.60 basis points October 9, 2026; spread measure adjusted for embedded options
Net asset value $94.58 October 12, 2026 closing NAV

The 5.11% SEC yield is a point-in-time figure. It can change as bonds mature, distributions change, market prices move and the portfolio is rebalanced. It should not be treated as a promised annual payout or as compensation that automatically offsets a price decline.

How AGG can fall while it pays income

Rising market yields reduce existing bond prices

AGG owns many fixed-rate securities. When newly issued bonds offer higher yields, older bonds generally must trade at lower prices to provide a competitive return. BlackRock’s July 2026 product brief states: “Typically, when interest rates rise, there is a corresponding decline in bond values.” The prospectus also warns that rate changes can be sudden and unpredictable.

AGG’s 5.69-year effective duration indicates meaningful rate sensitivity. A duration estimate can help you understand direction and approximate sensitivity, but it is not a precise forecast of the fund’s realized return. Convexity, cash flows, yield-curve changes, mortgage prepayments, credit spreads and portfolio turnover all affect the result. Longer-maturity securities generally fluctuate more when rates move, and AGG owns securities across a broad maturity range.

Mortgage-backed securities add prepayment and spread risk

MBS pass-through securities represented 22.74% of the portfolio on October 9, 2026. Homeowners may refinance when rates fall and remain in their loans when rates rise. Those changing prepayment patterns alter the timing of the cash flows AGG receives. MBS prices can also be affected by mortgage-market liquidity and changes in the spread investors demand over comparable Treasuries.

Corporate and structured bonds can lose value

Corporate securities and structured bonds introduce risks beyond Treasury yields. If investors become less confident in corporate borrowers, credit spreads can widen and prices can fall even when Treasury rates are unchanged. A downgrade, concern about a borrower’s finances or a reduction in market liquidity can push values lower. The portfolio had 14.22% in industrial corporate bonds, 8.00% in financial institutions, 2.49% in utilities, 1.39% in CMBS and 0.43% in ABS on October 9, 2026.

The fund does not move to cash during a sell-off

AGG is designed to track its broad index, not to make tactical exits. Its summary prospectus says the fund does not seek temporary defensive positions when markets decline or appear overvalued. During a drawdown, the portfolio can therefore remain exposed to the same rate, credit and mortgage forces causing the decline.

What AGG owns

Sector Portfolio weight (October 9, 2026) Risk implication
U.S. Treasury 46.80% Primarily interest-rate and liquidity risk; Treasury status does not prevent price volatility before maturity
MBS pass-through 22.74% Rate, prepayment, spread and mortgage-market liquidity risk
Industrial corporate 14.22% Corporate credit-spread and downgrade risk in addition to rate risk
Financial institutions 8.00% Issuer-specific financial-sector and spread risk
Utility 2.49% Corporate credit and rate sensitivity
CMBS 1.39% Commercial-property cash-flow and liquidity risk
ABS 0.43% Consumer-credit, structure and liquidity risk

The ratings breakdown on the same date was 2.21% AAA, 73.52% AA, 11.89% A and 11.54% BBB. Ratings and holdings can change. The BBB allocation is still investment grade, but it generally has more spread and downgrade sensitivity than higher-rated government securities.

What the recent performance shows

AGG has experienced both substantial losses and recoveries. The following calendar-year figures are NAV total returns with distributions reinvested and expenses deducted, as reported in the fund fact sheet:

Year NAV total return
2021 -1.67%
2022 -13.06%
2023 5.58%
2024 1.37%
2025 7.19%
2026 year to date -2.84% through September 30, 2026

The 2022 decline demonstrates that a broad investment-grade bond ETF can suffer a double-digit annual loss when yields rise rapidly. The subsequent positive years do not establish a forecast for 2026 or later. The AGG fact sheet and the fund product page both caution that historical performance is not predictive.

When AGG may fit—and when it may not

It may fit an income or diversification role

  • You want one fund spanning Treasuries, government-related debt, mortgages, corporate bonds and other investment-grade sectors.
  • You can tolerate interim price declines in exchange for current income and broad bond-market exposure.
  • Your holding period is long enough that reinvested income and eventual bond maturities matter more than this month’s NAV.
  • You understand that the 5.69-year duration creates material sensitivity to rate moves.

It may be a poor fit for capital that must hold a stable dollar value

  • You need a guaranteed balance, a fixed maturity date or a cash-equivalent vehicle.
  • You may have to sell during a rate spike, credit event or liquidity stress.
  • You are seeking a tactical fund that exits bonds when markets appear expensive; AGG’s mandate does not provide that defense.
  • Your objective is to minimize duration or credit exposure rather than own the broad U.S. investment-grade market.

Whether AGG is a good buy depends on the role you need it to play, not on the yield alone. A higher yield can be compensation for accepting more price volatility, not evidence that the fund must rise.

A practical checklist before buying

  1. Define the job. Decide whether the position is for income, portfolio diversification or capital preservation. Do not use a broad bond ETF as a cash substitute without accepting NAV risk.
  2. Check current data. Review the latest SEC yield, trailing yield, yield to maturity, duration, NAV and year-to-date return. Record each figure’s date because these measures change daily or monthly.
  3. Stress-test rates. Ask whether a further rise in market yields would force you to sell. Duration provides a sensitivity indicator, but it is not an exact loss calculation.
  4. Inspect the mix. Review Treasury, MBS, corporate, CMBS and ABS weights and the current ratings distribution. Confirm that mortgage and corporate exposure match your risk tolerance.
  5. Compare alternatives on consistent axes. For another bond product, compare duration, credit quality, maturity range, yield measure and date, expense ratio, broad-index versus active management, and intended role.
  6. Check trading and account costs. The stated operating expense ratio is not the only possible cost. Brokerage charges and intermediary fees may apply, and turnover can create transaction costs and taxable-account consequences.
  7. Choose an allocation you can hold. A position sized so that a temporary drawdown will not force a sale is more consistent with AGG’s risk profile than a purchase made solely to chase the current yield.

Costs, turnover and tracking details

The June 2026 summary prospectus reports a total annual operating expense ratio of 0.03%. That ratio covers the fund’s stated operating expenses; it does not necessarily include brokerage charges or intermediary fees paid by an investor outside the fund. The prospectus also reports 62% portfolio turnover for the most recent fiscal year. Turnover can generate transaction costs and may affect the timing and character of taxable distributions in a taxable account, although the tax result for any individual investor depends on personal circumstances.

Because AGG tracks a market-capitalization-weighted index using representative sampling, it is not an actively managed interest-rate call. The index is updated monthly, while the fund’s market price trades throughout the day and can differ from NAV. Investors should distinguish the price paid on an exchange from the end-of-day NAV used in performance reporting.

Three conditional downside scenarios

Scenario Likely pressure on AGG What to monitor
Market yields rise Existing fixed-rate bonds reprice lower; duration amplifies sensitivity Treasury yields, yield-curve moves and inflation or monetary-policy expectations
Credit spreads widen Corporate, CMBS and ABS prices can fall even without a large Treasury move Corporate-spread indexes, downgrades, issuer stress and market liquidity
Broad risk-off or liquidity shock Investors may sell across sectors; the index-tracking fund remains invested rather than moving defensively to cash Bid-ask spreads, trading volume, mortgage-market conditions and fund premium or discount to NAV

These are conditional mechanisms, not a prediction that losses will occur. The available official materials establish how AGG can behave, but they do not forecast future interest rates, spreads, inflation or the fund’s next price.

Bottom line for a prospective buyer

AGG’s 5.11% 30-day SEC yield, measured on October 9, 2026, is meaningful income by recent standards. The same fund had a 5.69-year effective duration, substantial MBS and corporate exposure, and a history that includes a 13.06% NAV loss in 2022. It can therefore be attractive for an investor who wants broad investment-grade bond exposure and can hold through price volatility, but it is not a guaranteed-income product or a principal-preservation vehicle. Buy only when the fund’s duration, sector mix and potential drawdowns fit the job you assigned to it.
