Adobe vs. Salesforce: Which Software Stock Fits Your Portfolio?

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

Neither stock is a universal winner. Adobe is the more direct way to own creative, document and digital-experience software; Salesforce is the more direct way to own customer-relationship management and wider enterprise workflows. The better portfolio fit depends on which businesses you want exposure to, how you assess recurring growth and AI monetization, and what valuation you are willing to pay on the same date. The available annual results do not establish that either stock is cheaper or will outperform the other.

Adobe and Salesforce are different software exposures

Both companies sell subscription-led software, but they sit in different parts of the technology stack. That distinction matters more than their shared software label when you are deciding how a stock fits an existing portfolio.

Adobe: creative, document and digital-experience workflows

Adobe Inc. (Nasdaq: ADBE) reports three businesses: Digital Media, Digital Experience, and Publishing and Advertising. Its named products include Creative Cloud, Acrobat, GenStudio, Adobe Experience Platform and Firefly.

Adobe says its fiscal 2025 subscription growth for Creative & Marketing Professionals was driven by Creative Cloud Pro and flagship applications, GenStudio, and Adobe Experience Platform and related applications. Growth for Business Professionals & Consumers was driven by Acrobat. Those statements describe Adobe’s reported product drivers and management positioning; they do not independently prove customer adoption, pricing power or durable competitive advantage.

Firefly is Adobe’s generative-AI product family, offered in subscription tiers. Adobe says its Firefly models are trained on data to which it has rights to use. That may be relevant to customers concerned about content provenance and intellectual-property exposure, but the product description alone does not establish how much paid usage or profit Firefly generates.

Salesforce: CRM and a broader enterprise platform

Salesforce, Inc. (NYSE: CRM) describes a unified enterprise platform spanning sales, service, marketing, commerce, collaboration, data management, integration, analytics and IT service. In its fiscal 2026 filing, subscription and support revenue represented approximately 95% of total revenue, making recurring contracts central to the business model.

Salesforce introduced Agentforce as an AI-agent layer and describes the Agentforce 360 Platform as combining its applications, data and related capabilities. The strategic proposition is broader than a single CRM application: Salesforce wants customers to use one platform for customer-facing work, data and automation. Whether that strategy produces incremental paid seats, consumption or higher retention requires operating evidence beyond a product launch.

Financial snapshot: useful figures, different fiscal calendars

The latest annual figures supplied for comparison are not synchronized. Adobe’s fiscal year ended November 28, 2025; Salesforce’s fiscal year ended January 31, 2026. The figures below are company-reported, in U.S. dollars, and should not be treated as a same-period scorecard.

Measure Adobe fiscal 2025 Salesforce fiscal 2026 How to read it
Total revenue $23.77 billion, up 11% year over year $41.5 billion, up 10% year over year Reported growth for each company’s own fiscal year; periods are offset.
Key segment or mix detail Digital Media: $17.65 billion, up 11%; Digital Experience: $5.86 billion, up 9% Subscription and support: approximately 95% of total revenue Adobe provides segment growth; Salesforce’s figure shows the recurring nature of revenue.
GAAP operating income $8.71 billion $8.3 billion Both are company-reported GAAP operating figures for their respective fiscal years.
Operating margin Approximately 36.7%, calculated from Adobe’s reported GAAP operating income and revenue Approximately 20%, as reported by Salesforce Adobe’s percentage is a calculation; Salesforce’s is the company’s stated approximate margin.
Operating cash flow $10.03 billion $15.0 billion, up 15% Company-reported operating cash flow; fiscal periods are not matched.
Acquisition contribution No comparable acquisition contribution is stated in the supplied annual figures Informatica contributed approximately $0.4 billion of fiscal 2026 revenue Salesforce’s reported growth includes a partial-period contribution from Informatica.

Salesforce is the larger company by reported revenue and operating cash flow in these periods, but scale is not the same as expected shareholder return. Adobe’s calculated GAAP operating margin is higher on these figures, while Salesforce generated more absolute operating cash flow. A fair margin comparison should use the same accounting basis and matched periods when newer filings are available.

How to compare growth quality rather than headline growth

Adobe’s growth is concentrated in two large operating areas

Adobe’s $23.77 billion of fiscal 2025 revenue grew 11%. Digital Media supplied $17.65 billion and also grew 11%, while Digital Experience supplied $5.86 billion and grew 9%. Digital Media therefore remains the largest disclosed engine, with Digital Experience adding a separate enterprise-software exposure.

For an investor, the questions are whether Creative Cloud, Acrobat and newer products can keep expanding their addressable use cases, and whether growth comes from more customers, higher-priced tiers, additional applications or greater usage. Adobe’s reported drivers—Creative Cloud Pro, flagship apps, GenStudio, Adobe Experience Platform and Acrobat—identify where management says growth came from, but the annual figures do not quantify each driver’s paid adoption, retention or incremental margin.

Salesforce combines recurring subscriptions with an acquisition effect

Salesforce reported $41.5 billion of fiscal 2026 revenue, up 10%, and said subscription and support revenue represented approximately 95% of the total. That recurring mix can make revenue more visible than a license-heavy model, although renewals, seat counts, pricing, usage and customer budgets still determine future growth.

Salesforce completed its acquisition of Informatica in November 2025 for approximately $9.6 billion. Informatica contributed approximately $0.4 billion of Salesforce fiscal 2026 revenue. That contribution is material when interpreting the reported 10% growth rate: some of the period’s revenue came from a newly acquired business, and future results will need to show organic growth, cross-selling and integration benefits separately from the acquisition’s consolidation.

Questions that reveal whether growth is durable

  • What portion of growth is organic, and what portion comes from acquisitions, foreign-exchange translation or price increases?
  • Are customers buying additional products, or merely renewing existing contracts?
  • Is remaining performance obligation or another backlog measure rising because of genuine demand or because contract duration changed?
  • Do new AI features increase paid adoption and retention, or mainly defend existing revenue?
  • Are growth investments producing incremental operating profit and cash flow?

Salesforce Chair and CEO Marc Benioff said in the company’s February 26, 2025 FY2025 earnings release: “We had an incredible quarter and year, with strong performance across all our key metrics, including the highest cash flow in our company’s history and more than $60 billion in RPO.” This is management’s characterization of FY2025 results, not an independent forecast or verification of future performance.

Profitability and cash generation

Adobe’s reported GAAP profile

Adobe reported $8.71 billion of GAAP operating income and $10.03 billion of operating cash flow for fiscal 2025. Dividing the reported operating income by revenue produces an operating margin of approximately 36.7%; dividing operating cash flow by revenue produces an operating-cash-flow margin of approximately 42.2%. These percentages are simple calculations from Adobe’s reported figures, not separately reported non-GAAP measures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The combination suggests substantial conversion of subscription revenue into operating cash in that fiscal year. It does not by itself show how much cash will be available after capital expenditures, employee-stock compensation, acquisitions, buybacks or other financing decisions. Those items should be reviewed in the full annual filing before using cash flow in a valuation model.

Salesforce’s reported GAAP profile

Salesforce reported $8.3 billion of operating income, an approximately 20% operating margin and $15.0 billion of operating cash flow, up 15%, for fiscal 2026. Operating cash flow divided by revenue is approximately 36.1% using those reported figures. Salesforce’s larger revenue base produces more absolute operating cash flow than Adobe’s in the periods shown, while the stated operating margin is lower.

Salesforce also reported $1.017 billion of net gains on strategic investments in fiscal 2026. That is an income item associated with an investment portfolio, not recurring operating performance. An investor comparing profitability should keep such gains separate from operating income and avoid treating them as a repeatable source of cash earnings.

Keep GAAP and non-GAAP analysis separate

Software companies often highlight adjusted earnings, adjusted margins or free cash flow alongside GAAP results. Those measures can help explain compensation, restructuring, amortization or acquisition effects, but they are not interchangeable with GAAP operating income. Use each company’s reconciliation, apply the same definition to both companies and label any calculation clearly. A comparison that uses Adobe GAAP for one company and Salesforce-adjusted figures for the other can create a false advantage.

What the AI evidence does—and does not—show

Adobe’s Firefly and Salesforce’s Agentforce represent different AI approaches. Firefly is integrated into creative and content workflows; Agentforce is positioned as an agent layer across CRM, data and enterprise applications. Both are commercially launched capabilities, not merely research projects.

However, a launch, a product name or a management claim is not proof of monetization. To test whether AI is becoming an investment thesis, look for several measurable signals over time:

  • Incremental revenue or annual recurring revenue specifically attributable to AI features.
  • Paid conversion, usage, seat expansion or consumption growth among existing customers.
  • Renewal rates and net expansion for customers using AI compared with those that do not.
  • Gross-margin and operating-margin effects after model, computing and support costs.
  • Evidence that AI increases total contract value rather than displacing an existing paid feature.
  • Customer concentration, data-rights compliance, security incidents and litigation exposure.

The supplied annual results do not provide a comparable paid-adoption series, AI-specific revenue figure, retention comparison or margin bridge for either company. Until those disclosures appear, AI should be treated as a potential growth and competitive factor, not as established earnings power.

Risks that can change the investment case

Adobe-specific risks

  • Competition and product substitution: Creative, document and marketing software markets can change quickly as competing tools and new workflows emerge.
  • AI development and use: AI can create new demand but can also reduce the value of existing tools, raise infrastructure costs or produce quality and safety issues.
  • Intellectual property: Copyright, training-data and content-ownership claims could create litigation, product restrictions or higher compliance costs.
  • Privacy and security: Adobe’s cloud products process customer content and business data, making breaches or regulatory failures financially and reputationally significant.
  • Macroeconomic sensitivity: Customers may delay creative, marketing or document purchases when budgets tighten.
  • Subscription timing: Revenue recognition and contract timing can affect reported quarters even when customer commitments span longer periods.

Adobe also warns that its forward-looking statements depend on assumptions and may differ materially from actual results. Treat forecasts, targets and product expectations as uncertain rather than guaranteed outcomes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Salesforce-specific risks

  • Execution across a broad platform: Integrating sales, service, marketing, data, analytics and AI products can increase complexity and implementation risk.
  • Acquisition integration: Informatica’s approximately $9.6 billion purchase price creates expectations for retention, cross-selling and cost discipline. Integration problems could reduce the strategic or financial return.
  • Investment and restructuring decisions: Salesforce discusses investments to support growth, restructuring and expense control; these can change margins and spending patterns.
  • Foreign exchange: International revenue and expenses expose reported results to currency movements.
  • Strategic-investment volatility: The $1.017 billion fiscal 2026 net gain on strategic investments demonstrates why investment-portfolio results should not be extrapolated as operating earnings.
  • Security, privacy and regulation: A platform holding customer, employee and operational data faces material consequences from outages, breaches or regulatory changes.

Salesforce likewise cautions that forward-looking statements are uncertain. Its recurring subscription mix improves revenue visibility, but it does not eliminate competitive, execution or macroeconomic risk.

Valuation: why the available evidence cannot name a cheaper stock

The annual operating figures establish business performance, not current valuation. No same-date share prices, market capitalizations, enterprise values, analyst estimates or valuation multiples are established here. It is therefore not supportable to call Adobe or Salesforce cheap, expensive or the better value.

Build a same-date comparison

  1. Set the as-of date. Record each closing share price on the same date and state the date prominently. Do not combine a current price for one company with an older price for the other.
  2. Calculate equity value. Multiply price by the appropriate diluted share count, using the latest filing and noting any material buybacks or issuance.
  3. Calculate enterprise value. Add debt and other debt-like obligations, then subtract cash and short-term investments according to a consistent definition.
  4. Choose matched earnings measures. Compare trailing-twelve-month GAAP earnings, operating cash flow and free cash flow, or use consensus forward estimates for both companies. Do not mix trailing figures for one stock with forward figures for the other.
  5. Show multiple definitions. Relevant measures may include price-to-earnings, enterprise-value-to-revenue, enterprise-value-to-operating-cash-flow and free-cash-flow yield. Explain whether each denominator is GAAP, adjusted or an estimate.
  6. Normalize unusual items. Keep Salesforce’s strategic-investment gain and Informatica’s partial-period revenue visible rather than silently treating either as ordinary, recurring performance.
  7. Test scenarios. Model slower growth, lower margins, higher AI costs, foreign-exchange changes and acquisition underperformance. A stock that looks inexpensive only under an optimistic case is not equivalent to one that remains reasonable under conservative assumptions.

Valuation should be tied to the investor’s holding period. A long-term investor may emphasize recurring revenue durability and reinvestment returns; a nearer-term investor may care more about the next several quarters’ bookings, margins and guidance. Neither approach can be completed without current market data.

Which stock may fit different portfolio objectives?

Choose Adobe exposure when your thesis is creative and document software

Adobe is the more direct fit if you want concentrated exposure to creative professionals, digital documents and digital-experience workflows. Its fiscal 2025 results show $23.77 billion of revenue, 11% growth, $8.71 billion of GAAP operating income and $10.03 billion of operating cash flow. The trade-off is concentration in markets where AI can both strengthen the product suite and challenge established workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Salesforce exposure when your thesis is CRM and enterprise workflow consolidation

Salesforce is the more direct fit if you want a broad enterprise platform centered on customer relationships, data and workflow automation. Its fiscal 2026 results show $41.5 billion of revenue, 10% growth, approximately 20% operating margin and $15.0 billion of operating cash flow. The trade-off is greater platform and acquisition complexity, including the need to demonstrate that Informatica and Agentforce improve organic growth and customer economics.

Use position size to express uncertainty

If you cannot determine whether AI will expand or compress software economics, or whether a valuation already discounts expected growth, position sizing can matter more than forcing a binary choice. A smaller allocation, staged purchases and a written review date can limit the damage from being wrong. That is a portfolio-construction decision, not evidence that one company is intrinsically safer.

A practical decision checklist

  • Identify whether you want creative/document exposure or CRM/enterprise-workflow exposure.
  • Compare the latest synchronized organic-growth rates, not only reported growth.
  • Separate subscription renewals and expansion from acquisition-generated revenue.
  • Use GAAP profitability and operating cash flow consistently, with non-GAAP reconciliations shown separately.
  • Look for paid AI adoption, retention and margin evidence rather than product announcements alone.
  • Review intellectual-property, privacy, security, regulatory, currency and macroeconomic risks.
  • Collect same-date price, market-capitalization and enterprise-value data before making a valuation claim.
  • Run conservative cases for slower growth, higher AI costs and acquisition underperformance.
  • Match the position to your time horizon, diversification needs and tolerance for software-sector volatility.

Bottom line for a portfolio decision

Adobe and Salesforce can both be reasonable software holdings, but they express different theses. Adobe emphasizes creative, document and digital-experience workflows; Salesforce emphasizes CRM, data and enterprise operations. Adobe’s fiscal 2025 and Salesforce’s fiscal 2026 results show strong cash generation at different scales, yet the periods are not synchronized and Salesforce’s figures include Informatica’s partial contribution. AI products are established offerings, but durable monetization remains unproven by the disclosed comparable metrics. Make the final choice only after updating same-date valuation data and deciding which business exposure and risk profile your portfolio actually needs.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
